Finder can't eject USB Flash drives, User Specific

I am unable to unmount any file drive that is attached to my computer using Finder for my main user profile.  (USB, SDHC, Hard drives, flash cards, flash drives, etc)  I don't get any error messages at all (nor does anything show up in the Console log).  If I hit command+e, click the eject button, or drag the drive to the trash, nothing happens at all.
I can use the "sudo umount f /Volumes/etc" command in terminal, and can eject using Disk Utility.  No matter what I do, I can't get it to work in Finder.  I've tried restarting the computer, finder, spotlight but to no avail.  I have fixed permissions, reinstalled Lion, deleted and reinstalled my User account, but none of these things has fixed my issue.
I am at my wit's end, and would really like to avoid trashing this user and starting fresh.
'Lil help?

  • Can't access usb flash drive while running a Linux OS

    Hello,
I'm a student taking a UNIX class at a local university.  I downloaded required Linux software for my class, called Knoppix version 4.0.2, on my Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5895.  The program runs fine but I cannot save the script I create to my usb flash drive.  The flash drive is a 4Gb Sandisk.  The light comes on the flash drive when plugged in but no icon is displayed on my desktop and the Knoppix OS won't recognize the flash drive.
I've discussed this problem with my Instructor and he can't identify what's causing the problem.  I've ran the Knoppix software on a friend's computer and it runs and recognizes my flash drive fine.  So the disk is good.  I've searched on the Internet and have had no luck discovering a solution.  I'm thinking now the problem could be with my processor, AMD Turion 64 X2.  But, I've been reading online, other computer users with an AMD Turion 64 X2 are having no trouble running Knoppix OS.  Below are the Knoppix system requirements and what is loaded on my computer.
    Knoppix system requirements:
    Intel processor (i486 or later)
32 MB of RAM for text mode, 64 MB for graphics mode
    Bootable CD-ROM drive
    Standard SVGA compatible graphics card
    Serial or PS/2 standard mouse
    My system:
    Toshiba Satellite L305-S5895
    Model: PSLC0U-01S01F
Processor: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00 GHz
    3.00 GB RAM
    32-bit operating system
Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2
Please give advice on what you think could be my problem.
    Thank you,
    Bradley

Try to manually mount it via Terminal.
Open Terminal and runs this command.
    >sudo /sbin/fdisk/ -l
That should list the available disks. They will be sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, ect. Usually the USB will be sdb if you don't have a second hard drive.
    Now run this command.
    >sudo mount /dev/sd*
Replace * with what the USB is.
    That should mount your USB

  • Can't print & can't see USB flash drives plugged in from Windows partition

My uncle has installed Windows XP professional through Bootcamp on his new MacBook w/ Snow Leopard. He gets to it through Parallels. Everything works perfectly, except he can't print to the same printer that the Mac prints to, and also, when in Windows, the os won't recognize USB flash drives that are plugged into the MacBook either. He has the latest Windows printer drivers installed for the printer he is trying to print to and still won't work. He needs both of these up and running immediately. I convinced him to get a Mac. Apple fam...HELP!!!
    Thanks.

    Hi,
since Parallels is not an Apple product it would be ebtter to ask such questions in the Parallels support forum.

  • Can't boot from a USB flash drive

I believe this ability was lost after updating to BIOS 80.52 following HP's "strong recommendation".No warning was given that this update would remove this ability and see that "Due to security changes, after this BIOS update is installed, previous versions cannot be reinstalled."
I have tried disabling Secure Boot and enabling Legacy Boot, and tried re-applying BIOS defaults.
Is there a particular combination of BIOS settings that I haven't been able to find?As the warranty on my computer expired in July 2014, the HP Customer Support Contact page won't even accept my request for assistance - despite the "strongly recommended" BIOS update being made available *after* this date. I require the ability to boot from USB flash drives ... how can this now be achieved?
Is there an HP BIOS for a more recent HP product with the JasmineR motherboard (or an AMI or other BIOS) available and how could I install it?
Boot a BIOS flashing program from CD or DVD and somehow bypass the HP BIOS's block on updates? Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I don't have another PC handy but will try to find one. The USB flash drive definitely does NOT appear in the boot menu - even as an HDD or CD/DVD as I have seen mentioned elsewhere as a possibility - and all USB devices are enabled in the BIOS settings and USB HDD and USB Floppy/CD are above rEFInd and all other entries in the boot order. I should also have mentioned that I've tried a (Lexar) USB flash drive prepared approximately a year ago with GParted Live which *has* previously booted the machine, and also different models of flash drives (Toshiba, Transcend) and different methods of preparing them such as burning bootable ISO images with Win32DiskImager, Universal USB Installer and Rufus, and manually creating and formatting a bootable FAT32 partition with diskpart (as per https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200124.aspx) and copying in System Rescue CD/GParted/Clonezilla files, ensuring there is an /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.efi file. In diskpart, the "attributes disk" command shows that the USB drives are not marked as bootable and "help attributes disk" says READONLY is currently the only disk flag that may be changed. (Don't know if this means anything as the GParted disk isn't "bootable" but did boot) Did the BIOS update disable enumerating USB devices until later in the Windows 8.1 boot process?

  • In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro

In start disc mode can I use a external USB flash drive on MAC Book Pro?

To do what? Yes you can connect a USB flash drive to the system and if it has the Recovery HD files on it you can boot from it. If it has the OS X install files on it you can boot from it. If it is large enough to contain a Time Machine backup on it you can restore your system from it.
So what do you want to do with the USB thumb drive?

  • How do I browse & play .mp3 files from a USB flash drive using Labview 8.0?

I'm a tester & want to test USB flash drives connected to PC.
I want to browse the file system & playback the audio files, .jpeg files etc in the USB drive. I've Labview 8.0. When I searched for some examples or VIs which can detect the USB flash drive, couldn't find any. So if you could point me in the right direction, I can find a solution to my problem.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You probably won't find specific examples for this.  A USB flash drive is mounted by the OS and appears as a new memory storage device to all software on the PC, including LabVIEW.  You can certainly write a LabVIEW program to open files on the stick and play/run them but I would create a VI that wrote files to the stick and then read them back and checked them for bit-level errors.  Keep in mind that your OS might be doing parity checking under the hood which would make your test rather meaningless.
BTW, testing memory by looking at pics or listening to MP3s would be useless of course.  A human can't see or hear bit-level errors in a high bandwidth data stream.
    Using LabVIEW: 7.1.1, 8.5.1 & 2013

  • Hi how do i save files to a usb flash drive in windows 8 rt

Hi how do i save a pdf file to a usb drive i have a tablet with windows 8 RT myfiles are in Adobe

Adobe Reader Touch does not support Save or Save As yet.  But we are working on adding the support in a future release.
How did you get PDF files "in Adobe"?
If you already have the PDF files on your device, you can simply use Microsoft File Explorer on the Windows 8 desktop to copy them to your USB flash drive.
If you tap/click on the link to a PDF file in Microsoft Internet Explorer (Windows Store app, i.e. Metro version), IE will prompt you to "Open" or "Save".  After you choose the Save option, you can specify your USB flash drive as destination.

  • HT4106 Will the camera kit allow you to view images from a usb flash drive?

Will the camera kit allow you to view images from a usb flash drive?

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • USB Flash Drive & power using Hub

Interesting fact -- my iMac can accept my USB Flash Drive on the convenient keyboard hub without any problem. However, when I reboot using Boot Camp into Windows XP Pro -- It cannot! It says insufficient power & I must use one of the USB ports on the (less convenient) rear of the iMac. This isn’t a major issue for me since I mostly am using OS X & rarely use Windows & even less often need to use a USB Flash drive from Windows. However, I do need to unplug something else (the Apple Modem) on those rare occasions when I wish to plug in a USB Flash Drive  while in Windows. BTW, I use SanDIsk Micro Cruzer with the U3 software --which doesn’t work with OS X -- deleted.
I would think the power requirements would be exactly the same -- being as the hardware (computer & flash drive) is identical whether I’m running OS X or XP Pro.
    Strange.

On previous versions of Network Magic, when adding a laptop to my wireless network, an option would appear for using a USB flash drive to transfer settings and/or password to the new machine.
After a few "upgrades" to NM, the option ONLY appears after I turn my security off.  If I leave my WEP security ON, the only option that appears is to "copy" the 32-digit password & enter it on the laptop.  However, I keep getting errors.
Is there a procedure to use a USB flash drive to connect a "new" laptop to my secured wireless network?
    Thank you.
    Hi thomas,
If this is your own New Laptop to your Network, and even after you supplied the password, the problem is the Network Lock is still on. You need to disable the Network Lock. Enter the password, installed Network Magic if the Laptop is your own. You need to stop tracking your Laptop as an intruder on your other copies of Network Magic.
Then you need to reenable the Network Lock from your Wired Computer. Use your other computer to activated the copy of Network Magic installed on the laptop.

  • USB Flash Drive Eject

    Hi,
I recently bought a USB flash drive (Sandisk Cruzer Micro) and i've been having some trouble ejecting it. When i plug it in, it works fine and I can drag files to it. I wait until the progress bar is complete (and then usually a few seconds after the progress window closes). The i right click it on the desktop and click "eject." For some reason this freezes up my computer for about 30 seconds which is really annoying, and it seems to happen every time. Is there anything i can do about this? Response is appreciated

Interesting idea. I tried doing that but all it did was make the Disk disappear from the finder. I did notice that there are some hidden files that are being created (not sure if it's by the PC or the Mac) which include "trash." Not sure if that means anything. other pausible causes: using the keyboard USB port, using PPC Word and Powerpoint (can't wait till they redo those)
    Thanks for the responses btw

  • Problems ejecting my USB flash drive

I recently acquired a USB flash drive which I'm using with my Intel iMac.
frequently, when I try to eject it by dragging the disk image to the trash icon (which turns into an eject icon for this purpose), I get an error message "The disk is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again.
I cannot work out which application I need to close ... I have been through every icon on the dock and made sure everything is shut - bar Finder and Dashboard which you don't seem to be able to close??
Any advice would be much appreciated - I'd like to just be able to eject the flash drive so it can be safely removed from the USB port, without having to shut down.

When you erase the drive, you'll see several format options. Mac OS Extended (and Mac OS Extended - Journaled) are the best choices, if you're going to use the drive with Macs only. If your going to exchange files with PCs, the DOS format is best.

as a new MacBook user, when inserting my USB Flash Drive, I do not know how to access its contents. Please help. Thanks.

Open a new Finder window, Finder > File > New Finder Window, and it should appear on the left under Devices.
If you don't see it there, or to get it to show up on the Desktop: Finder > Preferences... General tab, check External disks to have it show on the Desktop,  Or Sidebar tab, check External disks under DEVICES.
