Finder changes Icon List without asking

Strange behaviour on my new SL mac.
If I change the Icon List in a folder to, say, Cover Flow, the finder (sometimes?) changes other (all?) folders to Cover Flow. And vice versa etc.
Obviously I don't want that.
Is this something I can switch off, or a bug?
Thanks
Tom
PS Another thing that came in with OS9 I think. When you duplicate a file (Apple D) it makes a copy then leaves the cursor in the original label. In the old days it left the cursor in the COPY file - which meant you could change the name without having to reselect. Much better. Is there any way to go back to the old system? (It's been annoying me for years).

If I change the Icon List in a folder to, say, Cover Flow, the finder (sometimes?)
changes other (all?) folders to Cover Flow.
I see the same thing in Snow Leopard, and after some earlier experimenting my own take on this is as follows. I'm not sure it is all correct:
My understanding is that despite the wording, the View Option setting for "Use as Defaults" was not intended to be interpreted as "Other folders (or even just 'all new folders') will now open in the same view as this one." Rather "Use as Defaults" means "IF a future folder is displayed in the same view as this one, THEN that view will have the same internal parameters as this window does."
For example, if the current folder window is in List view and you use View Options to change the Text Size from 12 to 14 and then click "Use as Defaults", then IF a future folder is opened in List view, THEN it will also display with Text size 14. If the current folder window is in Icon View and you change the icon size from 64x64 to 108x108 and click "Use as Defaults" then IF a future folder is opened in icon view, THEN it will also display 108x108 icons.
But clicking "Use as Defaults" doesn't affect WHETHER a future folder will open in a particular view when double-clicked. *The global default for that is simply the last view that was used for a prior folder*, with the exception of particular folders which had been individually set to "always open in xxx view".
So for example, I just created and opened a new folder on my Desktop, set it to List view, used command-J and altered its parameters somewhat, clicked "Use as Defaults, and closed the folder window. I then created a second new folder, and it opened in List view, as expected. I then set this second folder window to Icon view, and closed it without doing anything else. *I then re-opened the first folder, and it opened in Icon view*, without regard to the "Default" that had been previously set while it was in List view. I then created a 3rd new folder, and it also opened in Icon view, again the "last view used for the prior folder" not the "Use as Defaults" that had earlier been set for the first folder's List view.
The View Option wording "Always open in xxx view" is also somewhat ambiguous - it actually means "always open THIS folder" in xxx view, not "always open ALL folders " in xxx view. Checking this box will not in itself affect the behavior of any other folder, whether or not that folder has been previously opened. The global default for opening another folder will continue to be the view that was used for the prior folder, and this default can be again be individually overridden for a particular folder by checking that folder's box for "Always open in xxx view."

  • GREP 'find/change' by list script: find a text string containing different para styles

    Hi
    I'm don't write scripts but do 'enjoy' copying, pasting and changing existing code/txt files.
    I have built a GREP find/change .txt that performs a large number of text edits/changes.
    But I'm left with an issue where I have paragraphs of text (styled earlier in the .txt file) that I'm unable to identify using GREP the usual way. I need to identify text in a particular paragraph style, followed by text in another paragraph style.
    Is it possible with GREP to create a search string to find: text styled with one paragraph style, ending with a paragraph return, and to include in that selection the following paragraph/s styled with another paragraph style?

    What do you mean by I would mark "changing" in "copying, pasting and changing"?
    Hi Steve,
    I mean I can see a way by modifying some existing code with "find...change" job
    1. set criteria to findGrep
    2. store findGrep() in an array
    3. check each found object if next paragraph matches some new criteria
    4. run changeGrep() if true

  • [win][js][cs4]find/change paragraph styles without losing local overrides

    Hi guys i need a little help here.
    I created a javascript which will find and replace doc file paragraph styles with indesign paragraph styles. everything works fine but the problem is that when it applies the paragraph styles it loses all local overrides. i tried:
    changetext(false);
    but its not working is there some kind of conditional parameter that i can put in the changetext() function so that it wont clear local overrides?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Kasyan. You're always there to save my day. Thank you very much...
    I slightly modify the script to go through all my paragraph styles that need to be replaced coz there are hundreds of them. Im not sure though if this is the best or is there any faster way to do this:
    replace("T1", "Text", "T1");
    replace("T", "Text", "T");
    replace("1", "Heads", "1");
    replace("2", "Heads", "2");
    function replace(input, folder, output) {
        var foundItem;
        var doc = app.activeDocument;
        app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.NOTHING;
        app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = ".+";
        app.findGrepPreferences.appliedParagraphStyle = input;
        var foundItems = doc.findGrep();
        for (var i = 0; i < foundItems.length; i++) {
            foundItem = foundItems[i];
            foundItem.applyParagraphStyle(doc.paragraphStyleGroups.item(folder).paragraphStyles.item( output), false);
        app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.NOTHING;

  • Beware: Preview deletes changed/unsaved file without asking

    Since this happened to me twice now and I lost an hour of work, I'd like too share with you my bad experience with Preview.app
    A nice feature of Preview is the ability to add annotations to any pdf-file. If you add an annotation (e.g. a comment or some text-highlighting) and the file is then "marked" as changed and unsaved (by the black dot within the red dot in the top-left conner of the corresponding window). If you now hit CMD+Backspace (for example if you want to delete a annotation which you added by accident by clicking somewhere in the pdf-file while the note-tool was still activated) the WHOLE pdf-file will be deleted (i.e. moved to the bin) and all the changes are gone (if not saved before hitting cmd+Backspace)! Sure, the pdf is in the bin and can easily be restored but all the unsafed annotations are for ever lost.
    Although it might not be a bug of preview but it is a very counterintuitive behavior which can destroy (and in my case has destroyed) a significant amount of working time.

    I wouldn't say that the name "Delete" implies that the whole file is deleted, normally it just deletes the text your are working on, for example in "Mail.app" cmd+del just deletes the previous text and not the whole email
    Actually, in general, it does. I just tried it in Mail and it deleted the entire highlighted email with the exception of having an active message composer window open and then, you are correct, it will only delete the previous typing.
    I would assume that Preview is not presenting the "do you want to save..." window possibly because you are not adding/changing a document you created, but rather adding a note to a document that was created as or changed into a .pdf - in other words, it will not react like a word processing document because it isn't a word processing document.

  • FCPX changes my transition without asking

    This seems to be another one of what must be a "breed" of bugs that are caused by restarting FCPX.
    I made a video to make explanation easy.
    http://youtu.be/c6jrbHKfb5Q
    Basically I have a transition that I'm perfectly happy with.
    It fades to black and then fades the next clip in from black. It works. It looks good.
    I restart FCPX and whoosh, it's gone.
    It's actually been modified into some hybrid transition (that fails to fade the 2nd clip in from black) - see video.
    What's most unusual about it, is that it creates what looks like a "nested transition" (yeah, I don't know what this is either, but it's there).
    I can't actually edit the "nested" transition, but you can see it (see video)

    Actually, I'd like to make a question out of this post and simply ask: "How can I get out of this situation?" - see image.
    I'm in the Precision Editor here and the most confusing thing to start with is that you see 2 transitions when I selected only 1 before pressing Ctrl-E.
    I'd just be happy being able to remove the "bottom" transition so I can get on with it.
    When I hover over the lower transition, it doesn't act like when I hover over the top (main) transition.
    I can't select it or move it. The mouse pointer acts the same as if it wasn't there - hand pointer, that just moves the clip.
    Which makes me think it's a bug and I'm pretty screwed, in that I have no way of modifying the transition at the bottom, since I can't see it until I get to this screen, and here I can't modify it.

  • Why does FireFox change layout/settings during upgrades without asking ?

    Just upgraded to Firefox 18 (windows 7 desktop). Why does Firefox change layouts/settings without asking the user if he wants it or not???
    I am getting sick of those changes. I want to have at the google main page the options (as before) to search in all languages, or pages from a certain language or pages in a certain language (of course depening of the google address; f.i. at google.de for german languages, google.fr for french languages etc).
    In the latest Firefox 17 it was working as I wanted and described before: when I visited www.google.de/firefox of www.google.fr/firefox. Now those 3 options (under the search bar) are gone and I do not want to operate by clicking on the advanced search button. Those things should be visible under the search bar again.
    Also my STARTPAGE was GONE/DELETED after the update !!! Grrrrr.... Updating is OK but mozilla should not change user configured items !!!!!!!
    The above described problem has nothing to do with the google website.

    By the way, do Firefox and IE use the same proxy settings? You can view Firefox's here:
    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > "Network" mini-tab > "Settings" button
    The default is "Use system proxy settings".

  • Deleting extra forced line breaks with Find/Change

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
    I'm importing word .doc that are text-heavy and the formatting is such that there are lots of extra forced line breaks creating a blank line between paragraphs.
    To avoid manually deleting the extra forced line breaks to eliminate the blank line of space between paragraphs, what are the best steps to doing this an easier way?
    Any advice on clear steps to do it using the find/change option?
    Thanks in advance as always..
    JRH

    Are you talking about two hard returns [Enter] in a row, or a soft and hard return [Shift + Enter] and [Enter]? A forced line break is a soft return, but most Word users would just hit the return key for an empty paragraph to get an empty line.
    In either case, you can do a simple text find change, if GREP intimidates you. Use the special characters menu to enter either two "end of paragraph" or a "forced line break" and "end of paragraph" markers into the find field and a single "end of paragraph" marker into the change field.
    This is included as part of the "Find/change by list" sample script which adds some other common cleanup functions like converting two spaces to one. The advantage to using GREP is it will find any number of consecutive paragraph end markers and convert to one in a single pass, while a text search must be run multiple times to catch the heavy handed author.

  • How to find out the list of patches applied without using inventory?

    Hi,
    I have been asked this question once.
    How will you find out the list of patches applied to Oracle Database Home without using commands like opatch lsinventory -detal etc...
    I think registry$history is a view from where we can find out the list of patches applied.
    But I think it will not include all the bug fixes,stand alone or one-off patches.It will mainly list out the CPU patches applied(correct me if I am wrong).
    Thanks,

    You're saying this is happening on a Mac??  Find My iPhone is a feature of iOS devices, not Macs.  If you are trying to change the iCloud ID on an iOS device, you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  When you do this you may find that the password for your old ID isn't accepted.  If this should happen, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, you need to temporarily recreate your old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • "Large" folder icons automatically changes to "List"

    I am using Windows 8.1 and Office 365.
    There are some folders and files in my system that I prefer "Large" icons.
    Problem:
    When ever I set the view as Large, they are automatically changed to "List" setting after I close the folder or system shutdown. Although sometimes they do not change, but the other times I have to change the settings back to "Large"
    again and again.
    Please help me find a solution.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    The icon displays correctly as I want in my PC, I suggest you rebuild the icon cache in your system, then test the issue again.
    this IconCache.db file is located at: (you need to show hidden files)
    C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Local\IconCache.db
    delete the files, reboot.
    Or rebuild in this way, kill the Explorer.exe with Taskmgr then run those commands:
    cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    attrib –h IconCache.db
    del IconCache.db
    start explorer

  • Find/change across multiple docs in book without opening all first?

    I am working on a book that contains hundreds of individual documents. I would like to be able to find/change globally across all documents, but as far as I can tell, I must first open all of the documents in the book so that the scope menu in the find/change dialog contains "All Documents" as an option. Needless to say, having to open more than a dozen or so documents causes my computer to bog down and it's practical.
    Am I missing something here? Is there a way for me to make global search/replaces across all docs in a book without opening them? If so, how?

    I'm not able to check this now, but I believe that FrameMaker can open closed book documents to perform spell checking on them. FM leaves the files open, whether or not corrections were made. I'm not sure if such opened files, in which no corrections have been made, need to be saved when closing them, but the user must close them. Files that contain cross-file cross-references are by default checked for valid cross-reference links, which requires the user to choose Save or Don't Save in order to close them, even if no corrections were made. The link-checking is considered to be a change; some folks consider this a bug, others a feature.
    I agree that it's a good feature to request for ID. A related feature request would be the ability to open next or previous ID files when paging through to the start or end of a file that's a member of a currently-opened book.

    On your computer's iTunes you should be able to edit your payment info by going into the Store > View Account menu option and logging into your account, and on your account's details page there should be a payment link.  If you are doing it on an iOS device (iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch) then try tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store (Settings > Store on iOS 5 and below) and selecting 'View Apple ID' on the popup - that should also give you a payments link on your account's page.
    Changing payment info : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918
    If you've received an email then if it's not personalised (e.g. 'dear client' or 'customer'), is in poor English, and has a 'verify now' or similar link in it's a phishing attempt to try and get your iTunes account and payment info - in which case you could forward it to Apple :
