Finder closes after ejecting external flash

Has anyone else experienced this?
Often (but not always), when I eject external flash drives, the finder window automatically closes.
I then re-open a finder window and see that the eject worked fine. Its just that the finder auto-closes some times when ejecting flash drives.
I have other external media (hard drives) that when ejected, the finder never auto-closes. It only seems to happen with external flash drives.
Any ideas?
I'm running SL 10.6.2.
Thanks
-Mike

Wow, its funny that I never made this connection before.
Yup, I just tried it and the finder does NOT close if the finder is viewing some other folder or drive when ejecting media, but ALWAYS closes if viewing the external media and ejecting that media. Makes sense. Interesting :^D
Thanks!

  • USB port gone after ejecting external HDD

    All software uptodate.
I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.
    Any ideas?

After some time I connected external HDD to "dead" port again. And got power. But still no devices recognized on this port. For example: iPad does not charge, not recognized.

  • Finder closes after having deleted files or folders

    OSX 10.8.2
    Finder 10.8.1
A Finder window closes after having deleted eg all files in a subfolder or after having deleted a subfolder. It's only since a couple of weeks that Finder shows this behavior... This behavior is very odd and causes me to open each time again a finder window when doing clean up ...
    Any clue?

I usually find thing sort of thing happens when you have mobile home directories set up but then log into those accounts as network user accounts.
Another thing I would check is that file/folder permissions match between the mobile home account and the server version of the account… both should be owned and writable by the account holder. If a user can't write and overwrite files across the board things will also constantly get kicked back as you describe.
My guess is that you didn't set the accounts up correctly in the first place by cutting corners by copying/duplicating between them.

  • Finder crashes when ejecting external drive

Hi have had my Macbook Pro (i5 early 2011) a month now and its crashed about 8-9 times, mostly it happens when trying to eject my external hard drive, the drive won't eject, so I tried a relaunch on finder, then finder disappears completely although everything else continues to work, I can access the Dock and utilities, Finder doesn't show up in Activity monitor. I have no choice but to do a hard restart. I thought it was the external drive as I had it partioned to MS-DOS and exfat but I just did a format and now its HFS with an exfat partition. Anyone any ideas? is it my Macbook, Lion or the drive you think?

I have the same issue by the sounds of it.
I am on clean install number three and all goes well, updates, move pics and music from external and reinstall all applications from fresh but when I complete a backup of the machine t an external drive, Finder seems to crash at random poionts or when thte backups try to eject the drive. I am at the end of my teather!

  • Excessive disk I/O after ejecting external storage device (USB, firewire)

    Hi all,
I've noticed a problem in my macbook pro that every times after I ejected a storage device, say SanDisk through a USB 2.0 card reader, I found about 20G+ bytes were wrote on the start disk. The excessive disk I/O brought the performance to its knees, and I can only recover it by reboot the computer. It looks like the data written on the disk were gone after reboot. Is there a way I can trace what has been written?
    Thanks

    Jovahn,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, external USB drives are not well supported on PPC Macs such as the eMac (later Intel CPU Macs do have better support for USB external USB drives, including booting). Regrettably, if the USB drive manufacturer doesn't have decent Mac drivers available, I don't know of a real fix, short of selling the USB drive and picking up a Firewire one. Or, pick up a Firewire enclosure, which is fairly cheap, and put the actual hard drive from the external USB enclosure in the Firewire enclosure --- PT: HD drive replacement tips should provide some good pointers.

  • Finder can't eject USB Flash drives, User Specific

I am unable to unmount any file drive that is attached to my computer using Finder for my main user profile.  (USB, SDHC, Hard drives, flash cards, flash drives, etc)  I don't get any error messages at all (nor does anything show up in the Console log).  If I hit command+e, click the eject button, or drag the drive to the trash, nothing happens at all.
I can use the "sudo umount f /Volumes/etc" command in terminal, and can eject using Disk Utility.  No matter what I do, I can't get it to work in Finder.  I've tried restarting the computer, finder, spotlight but to no avail.  I have fixed permissions, reinstalled Lion, deleted and reinstalled my User account, but none of these things has fixed my issue.
I am at my wit's end, and would really like to avoid trashing this user and starting fresh.

Are you running 3rd party software like an anti-virus or cleaning program? If so, try stopping them and try again. Also see:

  • Cannot find Close After Call in Labview 7.0

When I open VI's through a menu I cannot close them through my exit button. Also if I manually close it the menu is stuck on ON on that button and will only reload that VI

    Brian,
I am not real sure I understand your question however I will take a shot at answering it.
Are you looking for the VI setting that closes the front panel after it finishes running? If so it is under VI Properties>>Window Appearance>>Customize. Here you can select show front panel when called and close afterwards if originally closed. With this you will be able to open the VI and then when the SubVI is finished it will close its front panel and then the main VI will continue running.
I imagine that the reason the button is stuck ON is that the SubVI is still running, so that the main VI has not reset the button.

  • Finder closes everytime I eject a flash drive

    Hi,
I like to leave Finder open on my desktop. Every time I eject a flash drive Finder is closing. I cannot find anything to change in Finder preferences to stop this. Any ideas appreciated.

Is the Finder window displaying the contents of the flash drive? If so, ejecting it will close the window.

  • How do I eject the flash drive from an Officejet 8610 after scanning a file into it.

I used the front panel controls of my Officejet 8610 to scan an image into a flash drive plugged into the front panel of the 8610.
The 8610 recognized the presence of the drive just fine, and placed the scanned image on it as desired.
But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to do a controlled ejection of the flash drive.  (I finally did a controlled power-down of the 8610 and removed the drive after the 8610 turned itself off.)
How do you do eject a flash drive from the front panel USB port?

Thank you for your post on the hp.com forums regarding safely ejecting your USB flash drive. In our printers, to remove your USB flash drive, all you need to do is - remove the flash drive. There is really no other method needed. You will not harm the flash drive, printer or files.
    Hope this helps.

  • After ejecting a disk plugged into the USB port using Finder, I am now getting "The disk was not properly ejected" message.  This didn't used to happen.  How can this be corrected?

After ejecting a disk plugged into the USB port using Finder, I am now getting "The disk was not properly ejected" message.  This didn't used to happen.  How can this be corrected?

When you right (control) click on the disk and click eject "disk name", do you pull it immeadiatly or wait a few seconds for it to unmount? Try waiting and see if you get the same message. If you do, when the disk is connected go to applications/utilities/disk utility, after opening DU, select the volume in question from the left side bar and try a permissions repair, you may also run verify disk and see if it comes up with any errors (they will be in red)

  • Adobe Flash-Process closes after starting

So my problem is that I can not even run Adobe Flash.
I downloaded the trialversion and I installed it too but after running the Flash.exe it closes immediately without any error message.
    I'm using WinXp SP3.
    What could be the problem?

It's pretty hard to say, except to put some  generic ideas out there. It's more of a software install * computer problem versus a "using Flash" issue, of course, but when one runs into problems like this, make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements to run Flash. Also, uninstall the program and re-install it. That might not do it, but it's worth a shot.
Adobe trials don't prevent us from opening the program once expired (they still show a few screens and tell us as much), so this isn't because of that.
Also, for what it's worth, it might be interesting to install some other Adobe CS5 program trial, just to see if you have different results.

  • My macbook slows down after using external HDD

When I use an external drive via usb, my computer really slows down giving me no choice except reboot.
I watched memory usage with activity monitor. Free memory decreases  by time and inactive memory increases with the same amount and others  don't change much. If I continue using -esp. reading-, free memory comes  below to 100MB and then increases a bit -I think it starts paging  =other applications' memories= to system disk-, then continues to  decrease. Closing the application -that use the external- do not relese  memory from inactive to free but ejecting the external does. After  unplugging and trying to use the other applications, I face very  sluggish performance so that rebooting becomes a better-fast choice.  Both NTFS and FAT partitions produce the same result and I don't have  any other partition.
If I try to re-read the same file after the external drive stops  spinning (sleeps), it does not start spinning but trying to read another  file makes it start spining. This makes me think about some -overdone-  caching problem, but don't know what causes it and how to turn it off  (Tuxero's caching is already disabled in the preferences, although I  think it is only for writing only).
I made some research and found nothing specific; they tell to  reinstall the os or format the drive -to HFS+ -. What is causing this?
Note: All of my drives are in Spotlight's exclusion (privacy) list and using another usb slot did not change a thing.

  • Tiger "quits" when eject ext flash drive???? Addressless addressbook

    Folks:
Issues continue to crop up with Tiger, unlike those seen in Panther. A week back was finishing up working on a document which I saved to ext flash drive--closed the writing app, moved doc into flash drive, then ejected Flash drive by control/click and then maybe closed another app or turned off airport wireless &&& then got black window saying "You need to restart your computer." Then after restarted got an error window that said something like -- "You had to re-start your computer because OSX quit in the middle of what you were doing." OHHHH, the computer crashed!!!!??? I have ejected the Flash drive many times without this problem. Console crashreporter log showed single line entry for the time period that it happened--Thu Jun 21 17:41:44 2007 crashdump[94]: crashdump invoked as panicdump.
Is this what 4.10 is supposed to fix???
2). Needed my Addressbook to get email address of friend--opened the "ALL" part and there was only 15 or so addresses instead of what should have been 147 or so. Went to one of the smaller groups folders and all of the addresses were there??? How can there be more addresses in sub-category folder than in the total "All" folder?? Flipped back to the "All" folder after that just seconds later and lo and behold--all addresses were there??? This actually never went on with Panther frankly were stuff disappeared and the reappears seconds later--Is this an example of the SMART folder??? Will 4.10 fix this issue??
    eep

    Folks:
Looking for some thoughts or ideas on why the entire system would "quit"--perhaps due to ejecting a flash drive? That seems more serious than an addressless addressbook, although when needing an address, one might hope to find it in Addressbook, right? In Panther applications would "quit" just because it felt like it--but not the whole system. Is this "normal" now, routine?

  • Ejecting external discs doesnt work properly, no spin down of disc. why?

ejecting my external discs doesnt work properly anymore in 10.6, no spin down of disc happens, the finder unmounts the disc(s) and then the disc spins on and on. thats weird, because, in 10.5 i ejected discs and then they went spinning down the drive, as it has to be.
when i unplug the disc, which is unmounted from desktop, and still spinning, it makes a terrible noise in the disc. like a high pitched short tone.
any idea whats going wrong here?
    thanks!

you probably mean "causing the fail to spindown"
you maybe mean software like techtoolpro5 or drive genius3?
yes i disabled these helper apps on the discs, but first i used it (like monitoring
all discs if they are nearly full, or working s.m.a.r.t and so on. yes its useful,
but obviously it causes problems. i must mention, that i tested my 4 external drives again,
and i found out that i can eject all discs, like said before, but only 2 of the discs are spinning down, after ejecting, BUT only when i use the button "eject" in harddisctoolkit, they dont spin down, when ejecting from desktop (apple+E), and the other 2 of the 4 drives refuse to spin down, after ejecting, even with pressing eject in harddisctoolkit....
i can also state, that these 2 discs, which refuse to spin down, are FW800/400 discs and connected via FW800. and the 2 discs which spin down succesfully are UBS2 discs, if thats worth mentioning...
