Finder Crash, what now? Merge data somehow?

for the umpteenth time i have had Finder crash out while trying to move a folder (55 GB) from my desktop mac pro to my laptop macbook pro.
now i have TWO folders on each desktop of each machine and i don't want to have to /manually/ pick through this data to figure out what is where.
is there a software or method to put humpty dumpty back together again?
apologies if this is the wrong forum but i am trying other places because i have not gotten a good answer on what appears to me to be a big problem in mac OS.
i need a /practical/ fix for it.
thanks.

hey man.
permissions and file in use and all this bs is unpleasant to deal with IMHO. i have yet to figure out how there is a file in my documents folder that i shouldn't have permission to move and i have frequently found software to be closed but finder to tell me that i can't move something because it is "in use".
anyway, it happens.
the problem to figure out is what to do when it does happen and i wish there was a technical article explaining this because for the life of me i cannot figure out how this is not a MISSION CRITICAL user level problem that needs to be explained a little.
moving a folder to a destination with the Option Key held down - that results in a crash:
A) partially /copies/ data to the destination but keeps all data in the origination folder intact - or -
B) partially /moves/ the data to the destination folder and now your data is split into two locations [with the last piece of information that was moved being the file listed in Finder (or whatever and however this happens) /before/ the file listed that caused the crash]...
A?
B?
Other?
How come i never get an answer that makes sense on this one except the advice not to move and instead to COPY only and then go back and DELETE the data that was successfully copied over but for which you have no bread crumb trail to follow unless you were literally taking notes about what you were doing when you were moving data around...
argh. this is a frustrating issue.

  • Finder crashed and now I can't access to anything !

    Hi there,
So here is the thing... I was working on my Macbook Pro Retina with Yosemite. Everthing was just fine till suddently, Finder crashed... I had to force a restart and that's how my nightmare begun !
I get to launch the computer but when I'm on my desktop I see a message saying something like "The last time you opened finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening  windows...." It asks me if I want to reopen but no matter what I do... everything dissapears and I just see my desktop wallpaper...
Top finder bar isn't there... there's just a BLACK bar instead
    Dock isn't there...
Sometimes I get to see my Desktop icons but when I click anything... everything disappears.
I'm sorry I can't explain it better but I don't really know about computer technical things...
It looks like if Finder had enter in a kind of weird loop and never really gets to launch...
I've verified disk permissions and everything I could... and everything was looking just fine
I've reinstalled Yosemite and still the same problem
I don't really know what to do...
    Any thoughts ?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english !

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • How can I find out what type of data is being sent over one of the phones on my plan?

I have a few phones under a shared family plan.
I wanted to know what type of data is being sent over them, wether this is VOIP, Streaming Audio or Video.

I think the only way you can find out is if you look at the device itself.

  • Panic crashes, what now?

I keep getting panic crashes and from the log it looks like it's being caused my the graphics card. But I don't know what to do to fix it. Can it be fixed through the software? Like reinstalling graphics drivers? Mac is much different than Windows, so I don't quite understand how drivers work on Macs. The computer is an Intel iMac (white, not the newer silver).

It would be nice if there was some way to get this problem fixed through software, rather than have to bring it to an Apple repair facility to replace the graphics card. But if replacing the graphics card is the only way to fix it, then I guess that's what I'll have to do.
But I figured I'd come here and ask if anyone knew a fix before I spent big money to get it repaired (no longer under warranty).
From all my searching I keep finding ways to find the causes of kernel panic crashes, but not what to do once I figure that it's the video card causing them.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Sorry for the huge wall of text too...

    Hi,
First thing to do is back up your files/images/video/audio if you haven't already done so.
You could try an Archive and Install using your restore disk(s) to see if that would help.
    To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
*Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select “Archive and Install,” and then select “Preserve Users and Network Settings.”* If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select “Erase and Install.” You can’t recover erased data.
    Click Continue.
Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you’d like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).
If you purchased a standalone version of Mac OS X, these installation instructions are in a booklet PDF file located on the Mac OS X Install Disc.
If you need to reinstall the version of Mac OS X that was on your computer when you purchased it, or if you need to restore all the software on your computer, including Apple, bundled third-party applications, and printer drivers, review the instructions in the manual that came with your computer.

  • Multiple finder crashes on brand new MBP

I just purchased the 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro two three ago and have had a ton of finder crashes and restarts. It's not been anything worse than annoying, but it's still very disconcerting to have the desktop disappear for a few seconds. At least it always comes back.
I can not reproduce the crashes reliably. However, they do seem to happen almost exclusively when I'm navigating through a network drive. The mounted drive doesn't have to be from the same machine, either. It can be from my Windows desktop (CIFS mount), my OpenBSD server (Samba/CIFS mount), or my Airport Extreme with my 750 GB Seagate FreeAgent Pro drive attached to it's USB port (formatted on this Mac).
The crashes don't seem to occur when finder is in the background; only when I'm actively using it.
I've also had a few other applications crash, but nothing nearly as much as finder (11 finder crash logs so far...)
Anyone have any experiences like this?
I've not yet run Apple's diagnostics, but will be doing so tonight.

Well, I got the Apple store to swap out the MacBook Pro due to a scratch on the display's case. The store Genius didn't know why the finder was crashing. He didn't find anything in his internal support system, either. I also spoke to an enterprise support tech, who just happened to be there for another reason, and he wasn't sure either. Both techs did say that the build of OS X for the new MacBook/MacBook Pro is different than their normal one. I assume this is due to the new hardware and new driver requirements.
They looked at the crash logs I have and weren't able to determine the cause. We all agreed that the hardware wasn't likely the cause, but couldn't be 100% certain.
Well, after the swap, I've already had one finder crash, and as such expect many more over time. I figure this is an OS bug and Apple will eventually fix it. My past experience with OS X (pre 10.5) shows that this feature should be stable.
The store Geniuses suggested I keep sending the crash reports to Apple, as I have been. So, I'm closing this issue and will just deal with the finder crashes for now. At least none of the crashes has actually brought down OS X.

If you used Migration Assistant and do not have the PC data on an external disk you can merge the two accounts by copying the data to through Shared folder.

  • What does the Merge Data Stream processor do when there are multiple input streams to it from the same reader?

    Hi,
I have a process with a reader of master data that outputs 5 records that feeds simultaneously into 3 different lookup and return processors.
Each lookup and return processor brings some data back from a detail table. There can be multiple details so I follow each lookup processor with a split records from array processor. Hence I end up with 3 'streams' of data. Stream 1 has 8 records, stream 2 has 5 records and stream 3 has 6 records.
I join all these streams to a Merge Data Streams processor.
I end up with 9 records so although the help for the Merge Data Streams processor says 'Merge Data Streams does not perform any transformation, matching, or merging of records' there is clearly some merging going on.
What is the behaviour of the merge data streams processor in this scenario?
I have added attributes and flags into each of the streams. How many records should I see and what values should the added attributes/flags have (some records show attributes/flags from all 3 streams whereas others show just those attributes/flags from one stream).
I have developed a test case simply to understand what the processor is doing but it's not obvious and furthermore it's probably unwise to develop EDQ processes where the processor behaviour is not documented and guaranteed to remain consistent. What I am trying to achieve is to bring all of a person's (the master data) various details (assignments, employers, etc.) together so we can check the data (some rules require data from multiple details).
    Thanks, Nik

Cheers Mike - and for the explanation of the terms.
I think I understand now how it's supposed to work.
What I'm finding however is that when I set a flag to Y at the beginning of a path (that includes a lookup and return and then split records from array processor) that flag is showing no (i.e. an empty) value in SOME of the records shown in the subsequent MDS processor (it's fine the very last split processor before we get to the MDS but then again there are fewer records in that split processor than the MDS).
In my case there are obviously more records in the MDS processor than there were in the original reader (because the lookup and returns are configured to have unlimited maximum matches). As mentioned, the different paths return different numbers of  records before being combined in the MDS. Say a reader has 5 records and path 1 returns 8 records in total including a path-specific flag (flag1, set to Y) but path 2 (that again adds its own path-specific flag (flag2, set to Y) returns just 5 records (since nothing was added from the lookups) are you saying that flag2 would show as 'Y' for all 8 records shown in the MDS?
Hopefully you would be able to see what I mean if you try to create a process like the one I've described (or I can upload a package).
Re. the purpose of the separate paths approach it is simply to allow the visualisation ('showing the working' as Neil puts it) of the different checks being carried out by the process.
This is considered one of the benefits of the tool over writing SQL queries (with outer joins, query criteria, etc.).
Also, as mentioned I was following an example that Neil put together for us to ensure that we are doing things in a 'proper' and supported way.
If we put all the lookups, etc. for all the checks into one datastream then it no longer becomes so understandable and the value of joining processors in a process over simply writing SQL becomes questionable; arguably the EDQ process in fact becomes less easy to understand than simply writing SQL.
Also, to go down this route I will need to revise the (what was previously substantially working until I revised it) processes that I have already developed.
    Thanks, Nik

  • I have an iPhone 4S that is a replacement of a defective 4s and it shows over 3Gb of data backed up in the cloud from my old 4s. How can I find out what is in this backup? It is preventing me from backing up my new 4s to the cloud due to the amt of data.

I have an iPhone 4S that is a replacement of a defective 4s. When I activated the newer phone, I believe I transferred over everything except pictures (had multiple failures trying to backup and restore). Now the phone shows over 3Gb of data backed up in the cloud from my old 4s. How can I find out what is in this backup? It is preventing me from backing up my new 4s to the cloud due to the amt of data. It may be duplicated info that I don't need or I may want to archive the backup or parts of it like pictures.

You can not access the backup directly.
Did you restore your replacement from this backup?
If so then you already have everything in the backup on your device.
If not, you can wipe the device and restore from this backup:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
What is it you are worried about losing that isn't already on your current device?

  • Indesign CC 9.2 crashes upon opening the data merge panel

I have a document that's in a book (of multiple files) with cross references to other documents in the book. I also have almost all the content in an inCopy assignment in order to manage multiple versions/layouts with the same content. All cross references are unlinked from inCopy as the page numbers vary from book to book.
That said, while other documents in the book work fine, this one is having issues. Whenever I try to view the data merge panel it crashes. I had a similar problem with other files where if I try to select a data merge source it would crash. I fixed the problem by saving a copy, deleting all pages from the document, selecting the data merge source (which now works with no content on the pages), then copy/pasting the content back onto the pages. Not sure why this works but it did.
The problem is that I tried the same solution on this document and now, and it worked until I tried click on the data merge panel after following those steps, inDesign crashes. If I open the data merge panel, THEN open the document, it crashes as well.
I am going to attempt to redo this with the data merge panel open while I copy/paste content back in and see if I can narrow down the problematic content if that's the issue.

I actually tried this already, it still crashes and the error is reproducible on four different computers here: 1 Mac and 3 Windows machines. I didn't even restore my old preferences, I just did the reset and it still has the issue. Note it's not crashing when I use data merge, simply when I try to view the panel.
The only thing that differentiates this document from the other ones I've had issues with that I got my work-around to fix is that the cross-references point to other documents (where the other ones I've managed to fix have cross-references within the same document).
For the sake of my sanity I may just convert the (2) cross-references to text if they are in fact the issue.

  • How can I find out what is eating up my data?

This is my second month with Verizon and with my old service plan we only use to use 5GB per month.  Now we are over 7GB.  How can I find out what I am using that is eating up my data?  I still do same things I did 3 months ago.

I Assume you may have more than one, new device.  You can check in each devices settings, under cellular/mobile data to see which applications are using the most data.
YOu can then change many of the applications to use wifi only by turning cellular data off.
email and social media apps have settings within the apps to restrict cellular use, like not showing video of images.
restrict application from running in the background by closing apps before leaving home wifi or letting your phone "sleep" at home, while not connected to power.  (To save battery your phone switches off wifi, reverting to cellular, not a desirable feature, but it is supposed to save battery)
** to close apps, double click home button and swipe up to close app.  Leaving YouTube, Games, Maps, Social media apps open in the background can use mobile data.
clear the "outbox" in email.  Cases of massive data use have occurred when an email continues to fail and sits in the out box of the Mail app.
IN General, a newer phone does use more data for the same functions as older phones.
FFor more help with your iPhone, please visit Apple support, community forums or a Genius Bar.  I find them very helpful.
if you do go in to Genius Bar, back up your device.  In some cases, replacing or a complete restor are the only solutions.
