Finder crashes & restarts on dragging files into trash or emptying trash

Today, for no reason that I can fathom, finder has started crashing and restarting whenever I drag a file into trash or empty the trash. I realise this is a variation on a theme, but nothing I do seems to affect it. It wasn't happening yesterday but just started today.
Have created a new test user and they are also affected.
I have tried the following (based on similar posts I have read):
Deleting the .plist files (com.apple.finder and the equivalent sidebars)
Repairing the disk & permissions
reinstalling the 10.4.6 update
interpreting the crash.log (not much sense to me I'm afraid)
.Trash seems fine
The problem is irritating, and as yet doesn't appear to warrant a complete clean install.
Any ideas short of this would be gratefully received.
Cheers
Rob

Should I have deleted myself as Administrator and created a new Administrator identity, instead?
Not delete your old admin account, just make a new admin account & try that one.
I read on a different thread to try an Archive and Install. Is this a good option for me?
10.5.x does an Atchive automatically by itself, in theory you won't loode anything, but without a backup, as well as a problem, there's no guarantee.
Try this if you haven't...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Boot up holding command-r keys into Lion Recovery Volume. Reinstall Lion and it will "install in place" so none of your own data or settings should be effected.

  • Finder crashing/restarting with certain files visible?

This problem has been going on for months now and I've not found anyone else with it or any suggestions that don't include "go buy 10.4 you cheapskate."
Every time I open a Finder window with an .m2v file in it the Finder restarts. Now, if I switch to "panes" view everything's OK, but that costs me time since I like to sort by date. Has anyone else run into this? I'm getting desparate.

    Hi klem,
you can fix the list view as well by disabling the "kind" column under "View" > "Show view options". Now, this will stop your Finder crashing but does not really solve your .m2v problem. In order to tackle this issue, you will have to re-associate this file type with the application that you usually employ to view these files. You do this via the Info pane when you ctrl-click on the file in question and select "Get Info". However, first you have to make sure that the info pane does not try to preview the file or you will be back in limbo-land. To do so, ctrl-click on any "safe" file (like a pdf file ) and in the info pane toggle the preview triangle so that the preview pane is closed. Now navigate to one of your troublesome m2v files, ctrl-click, select "Get Info", go to "open with" and selct your application of choice. If you select Quicktime, make sure that you have the proper plug-in installed:

I have tried reseting to factory settings by removing battery and holding down the power switch for more than 5 sec but this does nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I think with so much unwanted data on the desktop and other places the whole os will crash very soon.
    Thanks, Rick

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash

  • How can I return files in Trash, more than 1 at a time? I can place many files into Trash at a time.

I placed many unix.exe files into Trash, more than one at a time. I recently updated 'QuickTime' and the Mac version of 'SilverLight"
(name might be totally 'correct). I don't know if removing these files can impede my iMac 2008 running OS 10.6.8(updated SnowLeopard).
I know I can 'return' one file from Trash at a time. When I try to return more than one ('mouse click' and 'drag'
over 2 or more files, the'return' option isn't listed. Is there a way I can either 'return all' or return more than one file

Only one at a time. But where are they from? Did you delete system files or are these Windows files (.exe is a Windows extension?)

    Hi MOOT,
Please try to reset the Adobe folders from below locations and make sure you don't delete them as they have your preferences, keyboard shortcuts and any personal settings that you have chosen. If so, copy those settings from old folders and paste them in the newly created Adobe folders after launching the application.
Click on go menu and click on go to folders
Type ~/Library to go to user library
Then go to Application support>Adobe and rename as Adobe.old
Then in same user library folder go to Preferences and rename the Adobe folder
Then go to Documents folder and rename the Adobe folder
Then try to launch the application and open the project.

  • Finder Crashes, Restarts, Crashes, etc.

I was coping a PowerPoint file from a co-workers memory stick and Finder crashed. When I restarted, the Apple Menu Bar flashes continuously and my hard drive will not appear. I am able to login into my admin account and the systems works fine. The reason I am assuming the Finder is crashing is when I logged into my admin account and opened up the Console, the console was showing the Finder.crash.log and every time Finder flashed the menu bar in my personal account and entry was posted to the log file.

Any suggestions on how to return my personal account to proper operating condition without lossing all of my settings?
    Jim

    Hi there Jim,
I had a very similar problem. It was actually when I'd just done a security update which clashed with one of my startup apps. I'm guessing that something you have launching on startup is for some reason crashing the Finder, which is why you are getting an infinite loop, where it keeps trying to launch the offending app over and over again... Maybe M$ installed something there when you launched PowerPoint.
Can you gain access to your machine through another admin account? Or can you launch the System Prefs while this crash is happening? If so then make your way to the Users CP and remove all your login items. If this solves it you'll need to add them back in one by one.
I know there's a way of logging in as "root" but I can't remember exactly how you do it so I wouldn't try that unless someone very clever on here can tell you how.
