Finder crashes with Finder

I still have problems with Finder, Saving Word docs in Finder, searching in Finder. Sometimes it doesn't show any external flash drives when properly plugged in. When it goes, I have to force quit Safari or Chrome (so that the open tabs will be remembered, and I have to pray that whatever work I had in Word will be recovered.  Sometimes the iMac 27 won't even shut down, so I have to power it down and restart.  This is getting really old.  Who else has had this problem?
When will there be a fix?

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Optional: Put any data you want to test in the Shared folder. Data in the Shared folder can be accessed by another User. When you "Switch Users", you can access the files in the shared folder. After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies).
Your Hard Drive/Users/Shared
*Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log back into your main User.
Any POP mail you download into the Identity in the test User will not be available unless you set to "leave on server"  in Account > Advanced settings/Server.
CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
Open Word. It won’t be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open.
Drag any data from Shared folder for testing to the new User.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.
Let us know what you find in a new User.

  • Yosemite finder crashes with previewig .txt and other files

    Hello,
under Yosemite  the Finder crashes with previewig .txt and other files.
Is this just my problem? Help please.
    Thank you very much.
    Regards.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Finder crashes with "open as" on audio and video files

My system was restored by Time Machine some time ago.
Since than my Finder crashes whenever i use the "open as" menu on movie or audio files.
I do a ctrl-click and choose "open as" nothing happens like a freeze and than the Finder crashes and starts new. Sometimes the Finder doesn't even appear again, so that i have to use the power button of my MBP to switch it off.
Other file types like jpg, pdf, ... work just fine.
I'm using a MBP, Intel Core Duo 2Ghz with 2 Gb Ram under 10.6.4.
I repaired permissions and even rebuild the launch services but it didn't help.

    Hello s:
The only thing I can think of to try is to trash a preference file (com.apple.finder.plist) and restart.
If that does not help, I would reinstall OS X 10.6 (over your existing system and then run software update.

  • Previewing Pictures in  Finder crashes my Finder

I've been having some problems lately with Finder suddenly crashing whenever I try to preview images/video in column view. Every time I try, it just crashes finder, and I need to relaunch it. This is also carrying on to safari, for instance when I am trying to upload files to my website (the browse file option to find the files is in column view). When I try to do that, it ends up crashing Safari the same way it crashes the Finder. I hope I can fix this problem soon, as I have not been able to upload anything on my site since then.

The information that you have obtained - particularly that a new user account works okay - certainly points to something in your account being the problem. I am not really sure if there is an easy way to make the settings of your account to be the same as those of the new account. Also, the more I think about this, the less it sounds like a typical preference problem. Usually if there is a bad preference, an app will crash immediately when someone tries to launch it. That is not what you are reporting.
Besides preferences, some items specific to your account could be startup or login items and cache files. I suggest trying some troubleshooting steps to see if the problem could be with some of these.
To test for problems in startup items and login items, I suggest that you try to boot in Safe Mode, which will disable these items. Instructions for that are here: Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode. If your account works okay then, a little more troubleshooting will be needed to find the problem item.
If the Safe Boot does not improve the situation, it would be worth eliminating the possibility of a corrupted cache file somewhere. This can be done by cleaning your user caches. Techniques for this are discussed at
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. See the discussion regarding cache cleaning.
If none of that works, it would be worth looking for a crash log from Finder. To find that, start the Console app from the Utilities menu. Using the logs icon at the top left, navigate to ~/Library/logs > CrashReporter and then look for something like Finder.crash.log. If such a log exists, it might be pretty big. Rather than posting it here, perhaps you could email it to me and I would look at it to see if I could make any sense out of it.
I wish that I could give you a quick fix for your problem, but the cause is not obvious, so the only approach I know is to keep trying various troubleshooting steps to help isolate the problem.
    Hope this helps,
    Rich

If my IPhone is stolen how do I find it with my find a phone activated?

On another iOS device, you can use the Find My iPhone app and your iCloud login and password.  Or, on a computer, you can use a web browser and log in to your iCloud account and use the app there to try to locate it.
Note that to be trackable, it must be powered on, and it must have an active data connection (wifi or cellular - either one but it needs to be connected to the internet).
If anyone tries to restore it, with iOS 7, they will be locked out without your iCloud login appleID and password.

  • Finder crash with remote disk

Browsing my Time Capsule backup over a very slow (2 MBit) Internet connection,
remotely through "Back to my Mac" causes finder to hang, crash and sometimes restart.

The problem seems fixed now, at least I hope so.
If the live CD did not booted this isn't because of the hard drive but of my NVIDIA Optimus config, adding “acpi=off” as kernel parameter fixed that.
In the live CD I was able to open the LUKS volume, activate the LVM VG and mount the LV without any errors or visible problems (such as lags).
Then I launched a “e2fsck -c -c” on the root LV (after unmouting it, of course); it reported 9 errors (9/0/0). I answered “yes” to all questions of e2fsck.
I had the idea to regenerate the initramfs with mkinitcpio as I remembered I have canceled the last mkinitcpio during the process, maybe it generated a corrupted ramfs?
After rebooting, everything worked normally. But I'm afraid I only have a reprieve, I will still clone my disk while it is still readable.

  • Finder Crashing with 10.5.2 - Help!

    Hi everyone,
    I have a DP 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 w/1.25GB RAM
I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5.1 this afternoon using the retail copy of Leopard.
I restarted and everything worked fine.
I did my taxes. Refund is not what I would like it to be but that's a separate issue.
I went to System Preferences > Software Update
It downloaded 10.5.2, the latest Quicktime, and a couple other things.
    It installed itself and restarted.
When it did come around, that's when I started having problems.
I can see my desktop image but nothing on my desktop.
No file icons or the hard drive icon.
My finder title bar only shows the time machine/Bluetooth/Volume/Clock on the right - but it does not have its white stripe nor do it have the Apple/File/Edit/etc menus
If I drag the mouse to the bottom of the screen, my dock does show up.
I can access my apps that I've saved there, but selecting the Finder icon does nothing.
I returned to System Preferences > Software Update > & checked again.
This time it told me I needed a Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 which I downloaded and installed.
Its now restarted again and the problem persists.
Still no desktop icons, still no Finder bar, still nothing when I click on the Finder icon in the Dock.
If I go to System Preferences > Software Update > Installed Updates > Open As Log File > Console Messages, then I get the following which repeats ever 10seconds or so:
    3/2/08 6:31:14 PM com.apple.launchd[95] ([0x0-0x53053].com.apple.finder[241]) Exited abnormally: Bus error
    What do I do now?
    Roll back to 10.5.1?
    Help!
    Thanks....

  • Finder crashes with OS 10.6.8. With or without any apps running finder will hang repeatedly causing the iMac to hang also. I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 recently and finder was OK for 1 week. How do I submit a crash log?

Folllowing an upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8  (Snow Leopard) Finder frequently hangs, causing any open apps and the iMac to hang. This will occur whether or not any 3rd party apps or Safari are open. About 50% of the time trying to empty the trash will cause a finder hang. There are no error messages to let me know what code such a hang may be. Repeated attempts to force quit the iMac always fail, so I have to hard crash using the power button. Multiple attempts are required to successfully restart via the login screen. I do not know whether any other apps, such as Safari or screen saver may be involved. I think a crash log would help, however I am not sure whether I should look in: useres/library/logs/DaiagnosticReports or : users/library/logs/CrashReporter, and whether I should attempt to open the latest in either in Console or Text edit and then post here. Also, is this the appropriate site to post a log in the hope that Apple may look at it? I have read through threads on Apple finder, and am stunned to find that after all these OS-X versions finder is still buggy and inferior to MS Explorer and Apple appears to be in denial. Maybe their efforts are in devices such as iPhones and iPads? Ths issue never occured in OS 10.5.8.

  • Finder crashes with External Drive on Sleep Mode

I purchased my new iMac 21,5" less than a week ago, and I haven't had a problem with it except for one that it's been bugging me a lot.
I have a LaCie 1TB Quadra d2 external drive that I use to store footage (since it's HD, the filesize won't fit in my 500TB internal hard drive), but I noticed that sometimes when LaCie external drive enters in Sleep Mode, the Finder freezes and the only two ways around this, is to force reboot, because the Finder won't answer and won't open again, or unplugging the external drive without ejecting him first, which it's not safe for me to do, because I'm afraid of hurting the device, and the files in it are pretty important.
This happens almost everytime, especially after a long time on sleep mode. I usually leave Final Cut Pro transferring files all night (since it takes a long time) so I kinda need the sleep mode, but when I wake up, Finder and Final Cut Pro won't answer.
I updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on day one. Is there a way to fix this? Is it normal? I read somewhere that some users were having trouble with external drives on Sleep Mode, but I can't seem to find any further information about this problem.
    Thanks!

I've got a MacBook Pro 13.3" that's a little over a month old, with a LaCie 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0, #301542U and I'm suffering the same problems and a few others with it. I've got a partition on it set up as my Time Machine backup drive. I've turned off the Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible in the Energy Saver preferences but I'm still having the sleep problem with it. According to the LaCie Manual:
By default, your drive will enter Eco Mode after 30 minutes of inactivity in order to conserve energy. To exit Eco Mode, simply access data on the drive and the disk will automatically restart. You can manage this feature using LaCie Desktop Manager. Click the Eco tab.
The LaCie Desktop Manager (in my case) only takes me to the Energy Saver Preferences in OS X to adjust the time there. Turning off Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible doesn't seem to make any difference, the drive still goes to sleep after 30 minutes. However, after 15 minutes the drive seems to wake back up, but then during the next 15 minutes goes comatose (no power light). Sometimes it will go through multiples of these sleep wake cycles without going into a coma, but eventually it does go into a coma. This happens in between hourly Time Machine backups.
After locking up Finder, Disk Utility and Time Machine multiple times trying to access the drive in this state I figured out that I could cycle the power switch to regain use of it (with a Finder warning of course) but this will only lead to file corruption eventually and I shouldn't have to resort to this. I've also dismounted it, expecting it to turn off and instead it goes into an extended spin down cycle (rapidly flashing light) and never turns off (or goes to sleep or what ever it's supposed to do) and once again requires turning the power switch off.
This is just too unpredictible and unrelable for me and as soon as I get the opportunity to do a 7 pass erase I'll be returning to the place of purchase. Based on the reviews of other external hard drives a drive from another company doesn't look to be much better of a prospect so I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

  • I can open audio files but can't find them with Finder or Spotlight.

    Hello!
I wanted to delete a few songs and found that by searching in Finder or Spotlight they couldn't be found.
I can open the files in Finder by opening iTunes, ctrl clicking the song and selecting 'view in Finder'. If I then 'get info' on the file it gives a folder, 'iTunes music' that I can't find. Is it possible the folder is there but hidden or that 'get info' is giving the wrong address?
I've recently moved my data (only) onto a new computer using Migration Assistant. On my old computer I'd find the songs by searching in Finder with no problems.
Here's an example incase I've not been clear:
I ctrl click on 'the boy who killed time' and select 'open in finder'.
It opens in finder and i again ctrl click on it and select 'get info'.
Get info gives me the following address for the file: Macintosh HD ▸ epoche ▸ Music ▸ iTunes ▸ iTunes Music ▸ vincent vincent and the villains ▸ are you ready for the country.
If I look for the song by clicking through the folders in finder (opening 'epoche' then 'Music' then 'iTunes') I can't find the folder 'iTune Music' in the 'iTunes' folder.
    Any ideas?  Rachel

My answer in the older thread is still valid
Maybe the "iTunes Music" folder is hidden.
Please open Terminal and issue the following command
    ls -ladO /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music
you should get a line similar to this
    drwxrwxrwx  13 yourusername  staff  hidden 442 12 Mar 21:49 /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
Numbers, date and time may differ.
If you see hidden then the folder is hidden. To unhide "iTunes Music", in Terminal issue the following command
    chflags nohidden /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music

  • My iPhone is dead and when I try to find it with Find My iPhone, it says it is offline. How can I track and find my lost phone?

I lost my iPhone and cannot find a way to track it. My phone is dead and I used Find My iPhone later than 24 hours after I lost it so it will not tell me if it is located in my house or not. Is there any way to track my iPhone or make it okay a noise if it is dead and offline?

If the iPhone doesn't appear in Find My iPhone, then unless your carrier has their own tracking service there is no way to locate it. And if it's turned off, there's no way to cause it to make any sort of noise.
    Regards.

  • Finder crashes when I try to open my external USB HDD

Hello all. I have been experiencing issues with my external USB HDD (WD Passport) and my Macbook Pro (Summer 2012) for some time. It looks that the HDD shows up on the desktop when I connect it but when I try to open the My Passport icon on the desktop Finder crashes. Finder works OK generally and I can see everything (even the Passport listed) but I cannot access the Passport HDD contents.
I have tried accessing it via terminal and managed to view the Passport contents ok (ls -ltr etc)
I have tried repairing the disk but the issue remains.
I have connected Passport to a Windows 7 PC and it works OK. I have even tried repairing it on a Windows PC but it has not helped.
Ejecting, rebooting etc does not solve the issue
Every time the issue occurs I see a PM Report Crash for Finder
    11/24/13 5:46:21.004 PM ReportCrash[1374]: Saved crash report for Finder[1377] version 10.8.3 (10.8.3) to /Users/Panos/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Finder_2013-11-24-174621_Panos-MacB ook-Pro.crash
Could you please suggest any solution to this problem??

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Finder crashes every 60 seconds

    Hi there
I've been going lots of googling the past couple of days but haven't turned up a solution yet...
Finder crashes and relaunches every minute or so. "Remove the .plugin files and log out/in again" I hear you say. Done, no joy. Tried removing com.apple.Finder.plist - no joy. I had Stuffit v10 on here, but it's now been completely nuked. Still no biscuit. Console log shows this:

Machine is g4-1.5GHz powerbook, 1.25GB RAM, 100GB disk, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The error happens when the kb + mouse are switched off too. This seems to have only started happening when I installed the 2006/07 security update. I tried reinstalling that, and then reinstalling 10.4.8 over the top of that, but no cigar.
    Any ideas, anyone?

  • Unreliable mounting of Firewire disks and Finder crashing

On both my MacPro3,1 and MacBookPro5,1 running 10.6.2, mounting of Firewire disks is unreliable. Sometimes a partition being mounted does not show up in the Finder (but does appear as mounted to the df command). When that is the case, launching Disk Utility will cause the mounted partition to appear in the Finder. On mounting the disk, the system log always shows these entries:
    21/01/2010 14:32:39 diskarbitrationd[14] unable to probe /dev/disk2s1 (status code 0x0000002D).
    21/01/2010 14:32:39 diskarbitrationd[14] unable to probe /dev/disk2s2 (status code 0x0000002D).
    21/01/2010 14:32:39 diskarbitrationd[14] unable to probe /dev/disk2s3 (status code 0x0000002D).
On dismounting the disk, the system log always shows these entries:

    Hi Dr. T,
    > There is an OnDemand key in there which looks
like it may be doing something useful.
I'm afraid that I don't know anything about the contents of those files but yes, an OnDemand key sounds like it might do what you want. Although I'm still fuzzy on this point, I gather that what you want is for the device file to be created in /dev but for the volume to not be mounted. As long as the device file is created, you can use the path to the device file as an argument to the "mount" command to mount the drive at any time. I assume that one of "the relevant parameters" in the fstab is the path to the device file.
I don't know how well I understand what goes on "under the hood" here because I don't do this a lot. I was of the impression that if you eject or detach a drive, the device file is deleted from the device tree. However, if you merely unmount the drive, the device file persists and you can easily mount the drive again.
By the way, it is supposed to be possible to use fstab with only data that persists between boots. You can use drive UUIDs or labels to refer to partitions. You can use the df command to discover the appropriate device files at the moment and then "diskutil info <device>" to get the UUID.

  • Find issue with -exec

Hi, I have a strange issue (since loading the 10.8.5 seed?). When entering something like
find . -exec grep something {} \; -print
    find complaints with
find: -exec: no terminating ";" or "+"
which is strange since I ever used it this way and always worked. Even stranger, if I recall a previously issued command from the history it executes without issue. Even when changing the command line text. However, typing the very same text returns above error message. I'm very, very puzzled.

    As you insist so...
