Finder crashing in AFP share

Hello,
We're having some really strange issues at work with an AFP share.
Setup:
Mac OS X 10.4.7 clients (including a G5, MacBook Pro, iMac G4)
Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 sharing files via AFP
How to replicate:
User's login to the AFP share, navigate to a certain folder, and then finder "locks" (spinning beachball). All attempts to relaunch finder fail. The only things that fixes finder is restarting the machine. This does not fix getting to the folder.
Every directory in this part of the AFP share have the same permissions. I have not tried to navigate to the directory on the server because we would have to get everyone to log off and stop working.
Thanks for help in advance,
Rob
  Mac OS X (10.4.7)

All of the users are connecting via ethernet. We typically have about 10-15 users connected to a Mac OS X server with unlimited clients. Everyone in the office connects to this machine, but this happens even when we do not
Initially we were having trouble with a folder that had photoshop files (.psd), but now we're having trouble with the folder up from that (which is basically a project folder that then has several folders beneath it).
I copied the files that one of our employees needed in Windows to another folder (created in Windows) above the directory we are having trouble with. She was able to access the folder and the files. Windows connections are through SMB (and all the windows machines that we have are able to navigate to these folders).
For the clients, unforunately, force quit doesn't seem to handle finder correctly.

  • Spotlight/Searching does not work for afp shares in Lion

    Hi
I cannot search for files in Finder on my afp shares. The server and client are both running Lion 10.7. Anything I am missing? Should this work or not? I'm so used to Spotlight I would really hate it if this isn't supported for afp shares.
    Thanks NEI

  • Mac, Indesign CS5 crashes when saving to an AFP share.

    Hey all,
I know that it isn't best practices to save to a share, but my users do it. We have never had that problem with CS3 or CS4.. as a matter of fact, not even all of my users have this problem.
I have one designer that crashes whenever saving to an AFP share on OS 10.5 server. It just kills InDesign. Spinning beach ball of death shows up and then claims that the network resource can't be found.. then poof.. bye bye indesign. I told her to copy the files locally, work on them, save them, then copy back to the server. But after 5 years of working off the share drive she still forgets. We are running production and she is begging me for an answer.
    Thanks.

I will double check her version when I get to work tomorrow. My Mac users are really good about staying up on patches.
I will let you know if I need further assistance.. thanks!

  • Lightroom 5.3 import crashes while trying accessing a AFP share

    Hello,
I am using Lightroom 5.3 on the latest OS X Mavericks 10.9.2. For unknown reasons I can´t access photos which are located on my freenas server on a AFP share. Lightroom got stucked when I opened the folder with the remote images. I deleted this folder and tried to reimport it, but the import window also gets stuck when I try to access the remote location. I can open the freenas shares, but when I select a specific folder inside this share, the colorful ball apears and spins forever... I would say that the server is not the problem, as I can access the shared folders with the finder without any issues. I also tried a new catalog, but I get the same issues. I also deleted the preferences, without any result.
Does somebody have an idea how to investigate the issue or does somebody experience a similiar behavior? I am not sure if it came with the latest Mavericks update, because I just set up the server and never used it before.
    Thanks for your help!

I've found solution by myself so I'll present it here. Maybe
    someone will need it.
The problem of such behaviour was that Flex plugin always (at
least on my pc) wants to ustart eclipse using its own JRE from here
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Flex Builder 3 Plug-in\jre (default dir).
This environment is Java 5. When you go to
    eclipse>window>preferences>Java>Installed JREs and you
delete default Flex JRE, add new to point to for example C:\Program
Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04 eclipse still uses JRE from C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Flex Builder 3 Plug-in\jre. Do not know why
Flex/eclipse does that but if you simply overwrite C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Flex Builder 3 Plug-in\jre files with newer JRE from
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04 all works perfectly.
    Hope it helps somebody ;-)

  • Finder acting weird on AFP shares

    Hi everyone,
I am using an OS X 10.8.5 Server with mostly 10.6.8 Clients. The clients usually open, save, copy to and from AFP shares provided by the server. Sometimes it happens that a client gets thrown out of a folder it is currently viewing on the AFP share. Once this behaviour starts it is near impossible to navigate down on the folder hierarchy since you get teleported back 1 to 3 levels. The number of levels depends on how fast you managed to drill down before you get thrown back. So an example would be:
The client views folder A on /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1
You start to navigate to a folder residing inside Folder1. If you now wait for a few seconds Finder will throw you out and back to Folder1. If you mangage to drill a few levels down really fast you might make it to /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1/data/more/here. But then you immediately are teleported back to /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1.
From this point it won’t ever work again until you unmount and remount the share. Sometimes even a reboot of the client is neccessary. It happens with ~10 clients so it is not just one isolated client acting weird. On the Server side I did not notice anything wrong or weird happening. There are no backups, syncs or other tasks running on the server while this occurs. It seems to happen more often when you are using list view (cmd+2), but I have already seen it with column view, too.
I’ve read about similar problems with SMB, but I am really stumped at where to look next. I already ruled out that it’s just with 1 client Mac. Deleting .DS_Store files did not help (not that I counted on that one).
Another weird thing in addition to that is that sometimes the Finder shows folders twice or even more often. These are exactly named the same. Sometimes they disappear when you want to click on one of them.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks
    Björn

Oh great! I had hoped it would go away. I suspect AFP to be the culprit. Since 10.9 defaults to the new SMB2 it might help to explicitly connect via SMB instead.
I am not sure since it’s been a while, but I believe the problem was happening less often if you disable both preview options using cmd+j in the Finder. Might be worth a try…

  • Finder Crash when accessing SMB share

iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo.
When opening a particular share on an SMB server, the Finder crashes and relaunches. Does not happen on other shares on the same server. Happens for all users on this Mac. Does not happen on other Macs.
Have tried deleting finder.plist and windowserver.plist, and cleaning caches with Onyx and Cocktail.
Note: also crashes on some DMGs.

  • Finder Crashing 10810

    Hello all,
Recently i purchased a Synology DS209 network drive and installed two 2TB western digital drives in a raid 1 configuration. Ever since i set this up on the local network and created smb/afp shares my finder would crash and i'd be unable to reopen it so i'd have to restart. I've searched the forums and seems like there is no solution or update to this problem. Seems that if i have one share open and the macbook goes to sleep, finder will crash when i start up the computer. Even out of no where i try to load finder and it just crashes spits out the error and all my desktop items disappear.
I've tried to remove com.apple.finder.plist and restarted but this hasn't fixed anything.
I havent had any issues with finder till i've setup this network drive.
The application Finder.app can't be opened.
    -10810
Is there a solution to this that i haven't stumbled across?

I did the same thing to submit a ticket to Synology, but like you said, this seems to be a OSX issue and the way the OS handles "improper" iscsi or share disconnects after the computer sleeps or the DISKS on the NAS sleep. It may just be that OSX doesn't allow enough time for the disks to spin up after they sleep and just crashes because it cant "find the disks" in the allotted time. I have 8 shares that automatically mount on startup so going through disconnecting all of them would be an unnecessary pain, and should be fixed by apple. I've also gotten in the habit of just closing the screen on my laptop after i'm done with it (putting it sleep) and that will need some retraining on my part, till apple fixes this bug. I thought i was alone on this but seems like the frustrated have yet to surface.

  • Copy from AFP share to AFP share (via VPN-Connection) - stupid?

    Hi there
We set up an OS X server in a remote facility and are connecting to it over a VPN connection (Netgear Firewall).
Everything works fine, there's only one annoying issue: if I want to copy a file from a mounted AFP share (share1) to another mounted AFP share (share2) - both of them residing on the same server - it seems to me that the files are being copied first to my local client and then back to the server again - instead of being copied directly from and to the server...
Is there anything I can do about this issue or am I wrong? Is this a so called "feature" of the Finder itself?
Thanks for any suggestions and regards
    Roman

Thanks for your thoughts about higher vs. lower latency networking - I totally agree. It might be a quite uncommon setup; as the server is being "housed" in a datacenter with quite tough restrictions: not only do they charge us for the power consumption, but also for the traffic being generated - which is 250 GB a month. They're providing an uplink with 10mbps (guaranteed), burstable to 100mbits.
Anyway, we're interested in keeping traffic low - hard to do if we cannot let end users do "common" tasks like moving files from one folder to another (of course, its a sharepoint - but they don't care).
What I'm looking for? Well, I think it will take hours to find out which part of the setup (AFP implementation of the server, AFP on the local machines, either of them on a particular version, the Finder in general...) actually might be responsible for this behavior. And maybe there's a "solution" (if you agree that this is actually a problem" buried somewhere

  • User Passwords Rejected on AFP share mounts?

User Passwords Rejected on AFP share mounts?
(OK, my last post got buried, and perhaps too long), try again. Very brief
    Issue:
After so many days, a User's AFP share password is rejected? What gives.
If you reset it, several days later, same thing, rejected.

    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Using Tiger Server, I have found that enabling ACLs, or Access Control Lists on the volume, and then specifying users and/or groups into the specific ACLs for the share point has been very helpful. Also note that 10.4.10 server seems to work better than 10.4.11, so if you haven't upgraded, don't go beyond 10.4.10. .11 seems to have some permissions issues and other problems.
I assume you are connecting to the server via AFS (i.e. Go > Connect to Server > ip address) and not SMB? SMB sometimes is more problematic about ownership. But either way, Mac or PC clients, it seems ACLs are the way to go.
Crazy as it seems, on my server, even if the owner is, say, admin, and the group with r/w permissions is, say, Prepress, it helps to specifically add the Prepress group to the ACL for that share. Then be sure to propagate the permissions down (unless you don't want to, for some reason). To do this, click the little gear icon and propagate all the permissions -- owner, group, acl, etc. down. This will take a bit of time depending on how much stuff you have. I also find that a server reboot can be helpful.
[[ All this said, 10.5.1 seems to do some crazy things, and I hope 10.5.2 addresses them. I have one machine (not user ID) that always creates a folder on a share with no permissions for anyone. Only from that Mac; the same login on another works just fine. Go figure]]

  • Importing from camera with iMovie onto computer with home on AFP share ...

I am trying to import a movie from a Sony Handycam into iMovie '08. iMovie can see the camera. The problem is that I cannot choose where to save the movie. I am only offered the choice of one of the two disks in my machine but am not given a chance to choose the actual folder location. Furthermore, the only choices are not write accessible to me.
I am guessing that iMovie doesn't want to import to my home/Movies because it is on an AFP share but why can't I choose the /Users/Shared folder (or any other location)?
Does the user that imports video into iMovie have to be an admin user?
The dialog that opens when I choose to import says "Save To:" but is not a proper (usual) file selection dialog. I only get two choices and they are internal disks not folders.
I know that Apple loves to work from the premise that they know best how I should do what I want to do but in this case I am actually totally prevented from doing what I want to do. I could actually log in as the admin user, import the movie (I'm assuming that would work) and then copy the files to my account. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Is there a way to specify the path for the import dialog?
(I am sitting on a gigabit ethernet network with a recent XServe and XServe RAID serving my home. I find it hard to believe that this couldn't handle a simple video import. It's not even HD.)

I am only offered the choice of one of the two disks in my machine but am not given a chance to choose the actual folder location. Furthermore, the only choices are not write accessible to me.
Other than the start-up drive user's account "Movies" folder, iMovie '08 only allows access to the "root" level of non-start-up drives which are the only areas it scans for "iMovie Events" folders during initialization. In addition, in order to access non-start-up drives, they must be formatted as "Mac Extended OS" drives.
I am guessing that iMovie doesn't want to import to my home/Movies because it is on an AFP share but why can't I choose the /Users/Shared folder (or any other location)?
    See above.

    No.

Finder level file operations performed external to iMovie '08 tend to corrupt pointers/reference paths unless they emulate what iMovie itself does in which case the initialization scan may be able to fix some problems.

Not familiar with such use so I don't know if this would automatically limit your access to root level storage area.

  • Save as dialog not showing files on a AFP share in CS2

I have a user who is not able to see any files or folders on an AFP share (SFM on Windows 2003) when attempting to Save As. The files are visible in the finder, terminal, it is not a permissions issue, and I have trashed permissions. Any ideas? Are there hidden files on the share that need to be trashed?

  • Finder crash when opening any Folder

I am a very experienced mac user and this one has me stumped. Im posting here to see if anyone else has this problem.
Finder crashes when opening a folder on the desktop
Finder crashes when using any option from the Go menu (or key combo) except Airdrop.
Once Finder window is open on Airdrop any navigation to home folder or any other folder using side bar causes Finder to crash.
Using Go To Folder causes crash, even on hidden folder like /var
Finder is OK when opening files on desktop
All other apps can browse file system and open/save OK
Google Drive is not present on system (this used to be an issue a long time a go that caused similar symptoms in other threads)
Drop Box is installed. But issue occurs even when dropbox is not running
Using spotlight to open applications still works normally.
Clicking the Finder icon in the Dock results in a non-functional blank window entitled "Window", all tool buttons are disabled.
Repeatedly opening the same folder over and over results in the message "The last time you open Finder, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself" Two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen". Both buttons have no effect except to dismiss the dialog.
    Steps Taken to fix:
Booted into recovery mode and performed repair disk and Permissions - Finder Still Crashes
Removed finder preference files using terminal
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Recent changes to system:
iTunes 11.4 Installed with normal Software Update.
    Possible Cause of Problem
Found app in iTunes that has File Sharing enabled and has a shared folder. Curious as to what was in the folder i dragged it to my desktop and double clicked. Im not sure if iTunes would have had enough time to copy the contents of the folder before i tried to open the folder. Finder crashed. This was the first time it happened.
iPhone app in iTunes that I picked in was "Ubersense".

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • User can't access afp shares

About once every other day one of my users losses the ability to log onto afp shares on the server.
In the Server App under Users his "Allow user to log in" tick box has become unticked.  If I tick that and save, everything is fine for a day or so then it becomes unticked on its own again.  As usual with computers in generally becomes unticked at a crucial point when everyone is busy !!
Any help would be appreciated.  I can see nothing unusual in the logs and I have tried reseting his password.

I just went from 10.8.5 to 10.9.2 and have this same problem. I first noticed in DNS 127.0.0.1 was removed during install and not put back. From there I got everyhting working except afp.
    Error message is:
    Kerberos fail: gss_acquire_cred major status_value <458752>  minor status_value <0>
major error <1>:  No credentials were supplied, or the credentials were unavailable or inaccessible.
minor error <1>: unknown mech-code 0 for mech unknown

OSStatus CreateKerberosPrincipals(CFStringRef, CFStringRef, const char *, CFMutableDictionaryRef, Boolean): unable to find admin record: -1

Any solutions out there? This is pretty critical for TM backups around the office.

  • AFP shares not showing in Sidebar

I am having problems getting afp shares to show in the Shared section of the Sidebar. The Sidebar is showing two of the SMB shares but nothing else. All of the AFP shares show on the other two Leopard computers. I have tried the following:
    1. Turned Bonjour computers on and off in Finder Preferences.
    2. Use DiscWarrior to clean the disc and have repaired permissions several times.
    3. Tried deleting the com.apple.network.identification.pist file.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks for any help.
    Peter

I have this problem from time to time. To get them to show, in the Finder I go to Go > Connect to Server > then click on Browse. The will not show them in the left sidebar, but will show under the Network. I know it does not solve the problem. I'd like to know a fix as well.

  • Folders Not Showing in Server Admin AFP Share Point?

    Hello all,
My problem is I can make a folder in Server Admin under AFP Share Point, But the Folder wont actually be made on the HD.
Under Server Admin AFP Share Point it will tell me that it doesn't exist?
So I thought I'll go to that point on the HD and make the folder then set the permissions to it... nope I can make the folder I can see it in finder and in terminal, But not in Server Admin AFP Share Point.
I have never seen this before any help is greatly welcomed.

    Hi Kristoffer,
I have seen an attribute for folder object which could control SharePoint folder hide or show in webdav explorer view, you can use PowerShell to output the problematic folder property, see if it the case, then use the PowerShell code to set it's property
with blank value to make it show in explorer view,
Use the PowerShell to get the folder object and then check the property value with this code line $folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]
#folder can be site, library level and folder level
    $folder = (Get-SPWeb http://sp).Folders["shared documents"].SubFolders["folder1"]
    #hide folder
    $folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]="00000016"
    #show folder
    ####$folder.Properties["vti_winfileattribs"]=""
    $folder.Update()
