Finder creating unwanted shortcuts

Whenever I try to move a file from Finder to Desktop, it creates a shortcut for it, even though I just need to move the document.  I have tried going through the preferences, but nothing's working.  I would like to know how I can prevent Finder from always creating a shortcut for something that I try to move.

From where are you moving? By default, it now creates an Alias when you try to drag out of the Applications folder.
Other than that, I don't know when it would create an alias. If you don't have write permissions on the source folder, you will only be able to copy the file.
You can alter the Move/Copy behavior by holding down cmd when you drop. Cmd+option makes an Alias.

How do I put a Shortcut Icon on my Desktop linking to a certain Webpage, like I could do with I.E./Google? Where do I find "Create Shortcut' ???

    Hey, Dynamite !
Thanks so much for that ... what a 'dynamite' solution. It's so easy. I don't know how you people know all of these things ! But one last thing if you can help me - I've just switched over to Mozilla/Firefox from I.E., and now I cannot open my Hotmail from Mozilla/Firefox. I log in, it goes to my 'Inbox' page, but when I click on an Email letter to open it, nothing happens. I can't even go into 'Drafts' or 'Delete' or anything.

  • Creating a shortcut of an application on the desktop

    Hi,
I've just purchased an ibook G4 running on Mac OS X (10.4.8) from apple and wanted to know how can I create application shortcuts on my desktop? Since I'm familar with Windows and Unix, I'm finding a mac a bit of a mission!
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to discussions apple freak,
You can do what Gnarlodious suggested, and it will work perfectly fine, But you should try out the dock. At default it is located at bottom of the screen (though it can be moved to either side), you can put applications there, folders, and basically anything that it will let you drag onto it. You do not need to create a short cut, or alias (basically the same thing). To place something on your dock simply drag it's icon, and let it drop on the dock. You can also set the dock to hide when your mouse is not over it, and to magnify when you mouse is over it. This is also where documents that are minimized are stored until you open them again. You may already know all (or some) of this, but if you haven't yet tried working with the dock I suggest you try it.

  • Creating a Shortcut on a Mac Desktop

Hi everyone. I'm sure this has a very simple answer, but me being a newbie to using a
Mac computer, I need some help.  I've set up a server for my home network with a
    Static IP of 192.168.2.10 .
It was simple to create shortcuts for my computer and my sister's, because I've used
Microsoft since it was DOS, and my sister's is Windows XP.  I simply created a shortcut
and then typed in the network address, it being "\\192.168.2.10\Music" in Windows.
But my mom has a Mac, and I need to create an alias (I think it's called) that would lead
to the server from it.  I've searched all through the internet, and all I can find is something
    to the effect of this:
    1. Launch your Finder and look for the program that you want to create the alias for.
    2. Highlight this file and select "Make Alias".
    3. Drag the Alias to the desktop.
My problem is that there is not an icon displayed that links to the server.
Is there some kind of Properties box where I can manually enter the network path?

    Hi,
First off, putting stuff (links/aliases, files, folders) on a Mac Desktop is not good practice, because it leads to some extra work on the CPU, since the Desktop is a folder like others, OS X will index all its content every time your Mom starts her Mac.
This said, the best way to make an alias easy to use is to place it in the Dock via drag-n-drop, not on the Desktop. If placed in the Dock, your alias will always be within reach. All you have to do is locate the server folder you want to share in the Finder, and drag it to rightmost part of the Dock, where there are already some folders such as Applications, Documents, Downloads, etc...
Alternately, you can also create a new Shared item in the left pane of your main Finder window. In the Finder preferences, you can also choose to show all connected servers on the Desktop, which can come in handy too.
You may have to restart the Finder (or reboot the Mac, or just log out and back in) for the latter to take effect.
Oh, I almost forgot: you can also copy and paste the folder in question in the Desktop folder (left pane in the Finder main window), and it'll appear on the Desktop itself.

  • I like to manually create lists when I take notes, so is there a way to create a shortcut/hot key for different symbols in the Pages inspector?

Not really a Pages user, but I am trying to make the switch from Word if I can figure out a few ways to customize Pages. I don't want to create a new paragraph style because I rearrange my lists a lot. I think there is a way to automatically create a custom list style, but I like to make lists manually because I frequently change things around. I would like to be able to manually add symbols. I know that Option + 8 will give me a bullet, but I would also like to use different symbols I found in inspector, like a black square and a black triangle. Anyone know if this is possible?

If what you're looking for is a more flexible way of quickly just including any symbol of your preference when you're taking notes (without establishing a more structured list like picas suggestion) there are a number of ways to use keyboard shortcuts to get a variety of symbols. Here is a link that you can use to hopefully find what you're looking for:

You can also try http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343 to find other keyboard shortcuts.

  • Create a shortcut in Java

I need to make a shortcut for a MS-DOS program(bat file) and put it on the desktop. How to do it in Java? Is it possible?

I take it this is to be used on the Windows platform.
One solution is to use the shortcut.exe from the Windows Resource Kit - it is fairly easy to find the tool using http://www.google.com/. This utility enables you to create a lnk-file for the desktop.
Next you make a batch file like this - my own install.bat only works on Win NT / 2K (but this you can refine for Win 9x):
    @Echo off
    shortcut -f -s -t MyProg.exe -d . -n "My Program" -i myicon.ico -l
if exist "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" copy "My Program.lnk" "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop"The batch file creates a shortcut and copies it to the desktop on a Windows NT / 2K machine.
Finally you start up the batch file from within you java program:
    // For Win NT / 2K use:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /C install.bat");
    // For Win 9x use:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("command /C install.bat");Hope this helps you.

  • Wont create a shortcut on desktop.

After running my app the second time, it does NOT ask me if I want to create a shortcut, but I want it to. How do I make it do this? I tried adding <offline-allowed/> to the information block, but to no avail.
    please help.

    I'm Windows with 1.4.0_01 (Webstart 1.0.1)
I left a Webstart icon on the desktop, and clicking on that gets me the Manager. The program is C:\Program Files\Java Web Start\javaws.exe that starts. You might find it and start it directly and see what you get.
I'm guessing that you're starting an application, not the manager.

  • CS4-How to create a shortcut for media browser icon clean up function?

    Hi again.
I recently upgraded my system, now running CS4 suite in Window 7 - 64bits. This to be able to manage AVCHD files within premiere.
I'm just starting to work with it and I'm missing the ability to create a shortcut for this function I had in PP2 cs2. I did go to the recommended reading before posing my question. There the most appropriate area I could find was about Bins Behaviours, at least I thought it was, and there was nothing in it.
I have gone to Edit / keyboard  customization then each of the 3 choices, application, panels and tools. but could not see "Clean Up"
I hope someone has an answer for me as I like to use this panel as a story board and use this function often and thank those who will try to help me.
(I'm pleased that my avchd files are now coming nicely on the timeline!)_

Is this what you are looking for?

  • Creating manual shortcuts

We have the good fortune of working in a locked down desktop
environment, so we will be distributing the shortcut and icon for
our Web Start application to all user machines on a scheduled
internal "Bus". My questions are, for those that have created or
pre-distributed shortcuts to their Web Start apps before:
    1) Do you explicitly reference the javaws executable is in your
    shortcut properties, as in:
%ProgramFiles%\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\javaws\javaws.exe URLor do you simply list the URL, and leave it up to your browser to
figure out what application to launch it with?
    2) I was thinking of generating the contents of my JNLP file using a
Servlet. If I were to do that, does the URL that I use in my
shortcut have to end in .jnlp if I only reference a URL (and not the
    javaws executable) in the shortcut?
    Thanks,
    Mike

The best way to use create the shortcut on windows is to point to the javaws.exe in the windows directory.
(on my XP this is in "C:\Windows\system32\javaws.exe") , or beter yet just use "javaws.exe" and let system find it in the path.
That way if the version of javaws is updated, it will still point to the newest one.
Secondly, if you just point to a jnlp file, the default browser may be launched, so it's beter to point the shortcut to "javaws http://www.mycompany.com/myapp.jnlp"
Third, using second form you could point to servlet or jsp with args:
    "javaws.exe http://www.mycompany.com/myapp.jsp?session=none user=none"

Go to Finder - Preferences - General and check the boxes of everything you want to be shown on your Desktop.
The Desktop itself is a Folder that is on the 'Macintosh HD' and therefor you cannot drag the Macintosh HD icon onto the desktop.

  • Creating desktop shortcuts

I want to create a shortcut on my desktop that takes me to the Documents folder. Is there any way for me to do this?

    Alias, path statements and ...
    1 - Alias
Make an alias of the documents folder (right click on it > choose make an alias > drag the alias to where you want it to go
    2 - path statements #1
If you have opted to view path statements in Finder (they appear at foot of the window) these can be hovered over > clicked on
    3 - path statements #2
At the top of a Finder window there may be an icon associated with the folder that is being displayed > click on it to see a vertical listing of path objects > these can be clicked on
    4 - Spotlight
Start Spotlight (mouse click or Cmd + Spacebar) type doc
It might take a while for Spotlight to recognise that it is Documents folder that should be first hit
5 - open any folder > Documents folder should appear in window in left-hand column
    6 - (any more...)?

And what is wrong with using a remote connection?
Ideally I would like to implement it in an API tool that would create Oracle Databases for an API with specific prescriptions once give DBName and Password .
Thus I think for an API tool to create remote shell connection maybe is an anti-pattern from Software Architecture
e.g. I already red from Microsoft Doc that PSEXEC is sometime blocked from antiviruses
But it was just a question, I may not do it, as informed, that companies having Oracle DB, usually have an Oracle DBA, and an Oracle DBA some times may not let anyone touch the Databases on the Server. Also Oracle DB Server might be on different Operating Systems while the API tool will always be Windows
The method you use will necessarily be somewhat dependent on the OS of the server.  If Windows, what's wrong with using Windows Remote Desktop?  If *nix, as explained in your several other threads swirling around this question, use a putty session to connect ... then, if needed for a GUI utility like dbca, runInstaller, etc, just set up an x-server on your local machine and enable x-11 port forwarding in your putty session.
You really are trying to make all of this much more difficult than it need be.
Hmm... so in Windows a remote seems the only solution, except the one RichardHarisson proposed if you already have a Database set up. For Unix I can promote the port forwarding method you recomended. Thank you.
Sorry I just finished my University and make my 1st internship on the Oracle DB Layer of Applications in Western Europe.
    P.S.
There is no such a need but I would find it a personal good exercise in understanind these connections-administration issues under different OS to try create an API tool that creates DB on other PC of different OS once you chosen the OS of the Server.
+ I promess not to follow it with a flood of threads agains : P I already became better in finding what I need through docs, lol

  • Create Windows Shortcuts

With ZfD 7 I was able to add Windows application shortcuts in the the Application Object. I've been searching on how to do this with ZCM bundles and so far I'm stumped. I don't see any actions related to creating a shortcut, nor can I find any reference to shortcuts in the documentation.
I've also tried uploading a shortcut file to the server, but the ZCC simple follows the path within the shortcut, attempting to upload the files the shortcut targets instead.
Has anyone figured out a way to do this? Am I missing something obvious?

Well, We all have those moments.
One of my favorites was the time I spend close to an hour trying to get a PC
to recognize an external USB HDD.
After Giving UP, I asked my boss.
It took him about 3.2 Seconds..............You have it plugged into the
    wrong computer........Doh!!!
(In my defense, there were 4 stacked on top of each other, but
    still..............)

  • Office 2013 - Creating desktop shortcuts using OCT

I need to create desktop shortcuts using the Office Customization Tool. But how does one do this when they have both 32 and 64 bit machines in the environment? The "Start In" path below is obviously going to be different when dealing with
    32 and 64 bit OS machines (c:\program files vs c:\program files(x86))
I'm following these directions but they look to be specific to a 64 bit machine: http://mystang69.blogspot.com/2013/08/office-customisation-tool-2013-adding.html

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179097.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396#Configure_shortcuts
    Start in
Enter a path to specify the default starting folder for the application. If you leave this box blank, the default folder is set to the folder where the destination file resides. If the path is not valid on a user's
computer, the user sees an error message when the user tries to use the shortcut.
Do you need to set a start in location?
