Finder/Desktop freeze after iphoto export  revisited

Hi
I have the same problem as josefgoetsz had earlier this month. I ended up with 688 jpg thumbnails on the desktop and the finder window is frozen open on top of them. Nothing can be moved on the desktop or in the finder window, as there's an eternally rolling beachball. Josef posted his solution to this problem, which was to move all the objects on the desktop to the trash (see post June 7) . But I didn't get how he was able to move the items, as initially he said that he couldn't move the jpgs. Below is josefgoetsz final post in answer to Brie Fly.
{The install CD did not boot! I resolved the problem by another way. My harddisc was quite full. So I moved around 30 MB video clips from iMovie into the trash, then I emptied the trash. After that I moved all objects from the desktop (it took several hours) to the trash. After that my Mac was as fast as ever.
From the trash I moved all objects into folders. That was it
If the Finder can't resolve itself after about 15-20
minutes (400 desktop icons is a lot, but if things
aren't under control by then...), I would be tempted
to boot from an OS install CD and use the Disk
Utility in its Utilities menu to run a hard disk
repair. }
I tried to use install CD but couldn't.I would be grateful for any further ideas.

This is just getting further and further away from being an iPhoto problem. If someone doesn't come along soon, you might consider reposting your problem of a massively cluttered desktop to the Mac OS (Panther) area of the discussion forum. They can appropriately direct you how to boot your machine from an install disk, or maybe come up with a better idea.

  • White Border Added to File Thumbnails (in Finder) after iPhoto Export??

I recently upgraded to Leopard and iLife '08.
I love having a white border on my photos, but since iPhoto doesn't have the ability to attach a border when exporting, I often add one using Photoshop.
--> First, I export photos to a folder on my desktop
--> Then, I run a batch processing Action in Photoshop to add the borders (via canvas size, if you care)
--> Finally, I add the resulting (bordered) photos to a separate iPhoto library, which I use exclusively to keep bordered versions of my "best of the best" photos.
My question is this. I just dragged a bunch of (non-bordered) photos out of iPhoto to the aforementioned folder on my desktop. When I did this, I noticed that each of the FINDER thumbnails (i.e. not the iPhoto thumbs) now has a white border around it. Opening the file reveals that this white border ONLY applies to the thumbnail (i.e. the actual files look identical to the photos in iPhoto).
    1) Why is this?
    2) I also noticed that the white border (again, in FINDER thumbs) wasn't applied to the 2 photos I previously edited in Photoshop (as opposed to all others, for which I used iPhoto). Why is this?
    Thanks...

    1) Why is this?
This seems like a new feature introduced with the Finder in 10.5
    2) I also noticed that the white border (again, in FINDER thumbs) wasn't applied to the 2 photos I previously edited in Photoshop (as opposed to all others, for which I used iPhoto). Why is this?
I can confirm this. Again, a Finder issue. My guess is that it depends on which app creates the thumbnail.
Really, these are questions for Finder people, rather than iPhoto people.

  • Windows 8.1 desktop Freezes after boot for about 20 seconds

only the desktop freezes, it refuses to accept clicks on anything then all of the sudden it works fine.
if I opened an application (like tmp.txt ) I get as many as I clicked on during the freeze period.
the task bar works during this freeze period, just the desktop is frozen. I can' bring up the task manager during this time.
this is the only error in the event log. I've tried looking at links for this but NOTHING helps. I don't know what that LiveComm.exe product is but I can't get rid of it and I can't stop it from causing issues.
The program LiveComm.exe version 17.5.9600.20498 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

    Hi,
Regarding current information we can't say that it related to this exe file.
We need to use Clean boot mode and Safe mode to test the results:
Please first restart the Windows in Clean boot and see if the issue still persists after reboot:

If the issue doesn’t appear, you can determine which one can be the cause by using dichotomy in MSconfig. Checking on half of Non-Microsoft service and restart, determining which half of the services cause the issue and repeating to check half of the problematic
    half services.
If the issue still persists in Clean boot mode, please test in Safe mode.
Let me know the results in Safe mode.
If we cannot identify this issue in Clean boot and safe mode, please help to collect the boot trace and let's see what cause this issue:

  • Lightroom 2.7 freezes after 7 exports

    Hi folks,
I know, everyone is into LR3 - but as I am working with XP for various reasons, I have opted for the 2.7 version for the time being.
I have looked for a solution on the forum and the internet but did not find any up to now.
    So, here it goes:
    This is my computer
I have a HD of 500 GB that is still rather empty as I work with external harddisks that still have loads of space too.
With Photoshop CS2 I can work up to 10 - 12 hrs before I get hints that maybe I'd better reboot to empty the memory.
LR is a wonderful tool and I am happy with it.But...
The first bug of not wanting to save jpg has been solved with JF Metadata Wragler till I can upgrade my CS2.
But it has another one. I can export up to 7 photos I have been working on and then LR freezes when I want to export again. Closing down LR helps a few times but then it won't even be closed down any more - or if it does, it won't start up again and I have to reboot. At that moment all else, Photoshop included, still keeps on working happily...
I wondered if the Wrangler was doing it, disabled and removed it, downloaded a new version > no change. I worked a while with an eye on the Task Manager's performance tab but nothing out of the ordinary as far as I can see. It does peak for a fraction of a second during export but then goes nicely down to normal values. It makes no difference if there are many catalogues or only a few in LR. I am using a setting in the Wrangler that after saving the photo sends it to Photoshop which does save me time - but I tried without it and that makes no difference either. It is always 7 exports and then no more...
Any idea what is causing this and what else I can do?
If it weren't so lovely to work with LR, I'd just throw it out... but I don't really want to miss it any more :-)
    Thanks and grts
    Nil

Well that wasn't the solution either - I removed LR completely (the second
time), also the things it leaves behind in the Win Explorer after the
uninstall, checked in the registry, rebooted and reinstalled selecting the
setup32.exe file manually. Now I get 1 picture further. Instead of the 7th
photo each time, it is the 8th that freezes the export and LR... This is
getting kind of spooky... I'm still trying to see the fun side of it but
    well...
    Any more ideas?

    Hi Dorin,
    >
I do hope you can answer a short question for me.
    >
When you install LR and it automatically uses setup64.exe, does that mean
it is thinking that you are running a 64 bits version of Windows? Because
then I may have found the answer to my problem - I hope. This counting to 6
business is getting rather irritating at the rate I take photos

  • Desktop Freeze after LEopard install

After installing Leopard my OS will not start normally. First start will almost always freeze when the desktop arrives on screen. The top finder menu shows but no desktop icons. The curser will sometimes turn to the color wheel but nothing happens. I can even click on item on the dashboard and hear the hard drive work but nothing on the screen. I do a hard reboot with the power and the second time it will start normally. If i do it again a day later it will do the same until the second restart.
Any thoughts, anyone with the same issue, what could it be, very dissapointing!!

Hey Boom-Stick, yeah, I got the same problems, almost. Only my PBG4 won't show the desktop at all, everything else is running though, like photoshop or any other app. I'm fighting my way through this, but I didn't find the right solution yet. One that helped a bit was the following:
    go here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1223396&tstart=0
and follow the steps. Create a new Admin, then all of the sudden the desktop/finder works perfectly. Only when you go back to the old username, it won't work again, that's the part I haven't figured out yet... right now I'm repairing my permissions, hoping this will help. But I dunno yet.

  • HP Pavilion P7-1225 Desktop Freezes After Startup. Frustrated!

    Hi,
My family's HP Pavilion P7-1225 desktop computer freezes a few moments after startup, most times. However, it will occasionally work just fine for hours and then suddenly lock up. Over the weekend a sort of clicking sound was heard followed immediately by the freeze. Restarted a few times, heard noise, got lock up. We're not hearing the noise now but it's still freezing up.
We have yet to talk to HP Support about it, but no other professional has been able to solve it (and we have had many try). Please help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Leo

    Hi Leo,
Many things could be causing your issue.  Intermittent freezes can be very difficult to solve.  Since so many professionals have already tried to solve your issue then it's probably time to contact HP Support.  As such, I am not going to suggest what has probably already been suggested and/or tested.
I don't know if you are using an UPS but transient changes in line voltage (too low or even too high) will often times cause a failover and clicking noises (relay closing and opening) with some UPSs will be heard.  I hear clicks from my UPS at times even though the lights don't flicker.  A poor or faulty UPS could cause issues like you are experiencing.  You might also having an electrican check the circuits in your house.  You might want to isolate your PC equipment off circuits that might have high current start up devices that might cause local voltage surges.

  • Batch Change "Date Modified" to match Exif Data After iPhoto Export

Among several other posts about similar situations, I have found none that directly and simply resolve this issue.
My wife imported a bunch of photos into iPhoto directly, but I wanted them in a folder on the hard drive.
I pulled them out of iPhoto into a folder, then deleted the ones in iPhoto so that I could sort them and reimport.
I then realized that the photos all now showed the date they were imported into iPhoto as their created/modified dates, which makes it impossible to easily sort them by the date of the pictures.
I checked the Exif data, and it has preserved the correct creation date event though checking "info" on the pictures shows create date the same as modified the same as iPhoto import.
Is there an easy way to batch change an entire folder of pictures to change the Created/Modified dates to match the Created date from the Exif data?
The only other similar posts had answers that reccomend a piece of software that does not seem to actually do this, and one that suggests some sort of confusing script that I don't really understand.
Please help - I have a bunch of family photos that I really need to fix.

shootShifter helps to redate and rename complete folders of images based on the EXIF data or Finder dates.
    So it will do batches.
I also believe that exporting the Original (File -> Export: Kind Original) will make all of this unnecessary.
I don't like having them only in iPhoto so I organize the originals into folders by choronological event then import them so I have copies outside the iPhoto library to put elsewhere.
You understand that you're using twice the disk space there, right? And that it's quite unnecessary. All iPhoto does is to put them in folders too. Have you looked inside the iPhoto Library ever?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed. Your photos are in the Masters folder.
Standard warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

  • Computer Freezes After iPhoto Album Mosaic Screen Saver

After using the Mosaic screen saver, my Mac will freeze, therefore resulting in me having to perform a hard shutdown, and reboot my Mac. When my Mac turns back on and I log in, Crash Reporter reports that AdobeResourceSychronizer crashed. The log is found with in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ This occurs approximately once every 3-5 days. The only Adobe software I should have installed is:

    Flash
    Shockwave
I switched my screen saver about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I switched it to Spectrum today. Should this solve the issue, or should I check for Adobe junk installed on my computer, or both?

  • Finder sometimes freezes after graphics-intensive programs

I've just updated to 10.4.8 from 10.4.7 and found a new behaviour:
Sometimes, after running graphics-intensive programs (which I was running under 10.4.7 before), I'm seeing that Finder stops responding to the mouse clicks or keyboard. In fact, the mouse cursor moves, but can't click or drag anything.
For example: I've seen this happen after running LiveQuartz and CoreImage Funhouse in succession. This has happened with the same user or after running gfx programs as one user and switching to a different users.
The only solution is forcing a shutdown by holding the power key.
    I have tried:
    1/ Cleaning caches
    2/ Rebuilding kext caches
3/ All normal maintenance tasks (periodic command)
4/ Redoing all of the dynamic linking, etc.
    5/ Running as different users.
    6/ Resetting the PRAM.
    No luck.
I have seen an issue like this with ATI graphics when the GL Shader portion of the ATI drivers, but have never seen it on a Mac. It feels like a gfx driver stability issue. No messages in console or system logs that would give any clues.
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
    Cheers,

Forgive me for not knowing already, but does that list include repairing disk permossions? My computer, after installation, did this and many worse things before repairing permission.s Also when repairing permissions it seems to not repair all of them unless you boot off of your install disk.
^^You probably already know that. Doesn't hurt to find out though

  • Finder constantly freezing after update to 10.4.11

    Hello,
After a failed attempt to upgrade to Leopard, I decided to rever to Tiger. I had Tiger running pretty well on 10.4.8 and then decided to jump up to 10.4.11.
Ever since them, I get a spinning beach ball in the finder if I do just about anything - open an app, copy a file, etc. It lasts for a long time (maybe 10 mins or more) unless I relaunch the finder.
All my apps seem to run find, and in fact even while the finder is locked up I can open up as many apps as I want with no trouble.
I've tried both my users on this machine, and they both have the same issue.
    Any help?

    Hello fancy:
I think I would download and reapply the OS X 10.4.11 update.

  • Finder is freezing after installing Yosemite. Having to relaunch every other day.

After installing Yosemite, I went to finder and noticed that the text was blacked out and it was frozen ( not allowing me to go anywhere in the finder). After relaunching the finder it started working fine. But since then I am having to relaunch the finder every day or every other day. Is there a fix for this or no? Just wondering as its beginning to be an issue. Haven't had this issue before and I'm on a mid 2013 Macbook Pro Retina.

    Hi
I have a Late 2013 retina MacBook Pro, and i've the same issue than you... I don't really know from where it comes from...
Do you have a third party software to browse external device in NTFS format such an external hard drive?
I have a path to explore since i noticed this bug the first time i tried to browse my external hdd.
Here is a screenshot of the bug :
Or when i browse local ssd (where Yosemite is installed) i got a blank folder...
I got graphic glitches when entering Time Machine for exemple.
I'm using the last version of Tuxera NTFS (trial version) supporting Yosemite...
I've no problem so far with Mavericks which is working flawlessly...
My install of Yosemite is a clean install without any third party software/drivers, the problem is here with or without Tuxera NTFS installed. I did two clean install in the passt two days.
Many thanks if Apple could do something for this bug.
I did an Apple Diagnostic and there is no mistake with the hardware according to the result.

  • Can't find IPTC metadata after Aperture export into Lightroom

    Hi all,
I'm sure you've already worked through this pain, so maybe you'll have some insight for me:
I am exporting approximately 25,000 images from Aperture 2.1.4 and importing them into Lightroom 4.  I started working with my small projects of about 300 images to test.  From Aperture, I exported the Master files with the Sidecar (IPTC4.XMP) files.  [My masters are a mix of .jpgs and .NEF, and I read that the jpgs don't always carry the meta data through].  I successfully imported the master files into Lightroom and ran the "Read Metadata from File" command.  I also exported the keywords file from Aperture and imported those into Lightroom as well.
Prior to exporting, I edited one file in Aperture by entering "test caption", "test location", "test keyword", "test copyright" etc. into several of the IPTC fields.  These fields are NOT appearing in the equivalent Lightroom fields.  I checked the .XMP file (using text edit) and it does contain the correct "test values".  I am getting all of the EXIF metadata, but none of my custom values.
Is it as simple as not looking in the right place in Lightroom for my values?

    John, and Brent -
Yes, thank you, you were both right.  Here is an updated screenshot showing the image in both applications, with the metadata where I expected it.  The trick, in my case, was to follow "Method 1" in the link above, to write the IPTC data into the .jpgs.  I'll use the sidecar method for the .NEFs, probably.  Also, expanding the fields proved that the keyword was present.  I'm sure I can mess around with the Display Metadata options from Default to other things.  All well; heroes to the rescue!

  • Desktop Freezes after Install

I just finished upgrading from 10.4.1 to 10.6 (snow leopard). My computer now takes over a minute and half to boot. Then once it gets to the desktop, I can't select anything for another 3 minutes and 40 seconds. I can move the move around but I can't actually select anything in the doc or on my desktop. I've rebooted multiple times with no success.
Does anyone know what's causing this?
    Thanks,

How much available space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

Might be a good idea to check the startup disk in case it needs repairing.
    Launch Disk Utility  /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions).
If the disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
