Finder disappears.... ???

There's a glitch in my Finder???
I was watching a DVD, using DVD Player - I got bored, so I stopped the DVD, quit the Application, ejected the disc by dragging the icon to the eject thing in the Dock -
then I had the Finder window open with the applications list, so I was going to hit Cmd-W to close that window when I accidentally hit Cmd-Q and all of a sudden, the Menu bar all across the top and the whole Desktop disappear, and I am unable to Cmd-Opt-Esc to relaunch it to bring it back!
The Mouse works, so I moved it around to find that it is able to show me the Dock, and when I click on an application from that Dock, the application works! But when I quit that app, the Menu for the app gets stuck and I am still unable to get any Finder menu across the top, nor the Desktop stuff.
This is not the first time this has happened. It's happened to me several times.
Funny thing is, while I am in the application that is able to launch through the Dock (without all the Desktop and Finder items) - I am able to access the Apple menu and am able to Restart the whole computer.
When I come back, all is normal.
Lately I have noticed that the machine has been extremely hot only after about 30 minutes - it feels much hotter than before.
Any ideas as to why it's doing this weird thing?
Thanks...

Cmd-Q does nothing for me with a Finder window open or the Finder selected and Finder menu bar.

  • FINDER disappears after trying to set file sharing.  What to do??

‘Finder’ dies when I try to use the GET INFO approach and set a folder to be shared. Finder seems to disappear as soon as I place a check mark in the sharing box. It does not even appear in the FORCE QUIT screen. The computer then is in a state of suspended animation, so I shut off the power. This is a repeatable failure mode.
    I used Disk Utility to ‘Repair Permissions” a few times and received some arcane messages when this process was complete … warnings that the following SUID files had been modified and will not be repaired;
    - System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad
    - usr/bin/setregion
    - System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner
    - System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper
I don’t know what to make of these messages. This stuff may not even be associated with this problem ...
Anyone have any suggestions about how to proceed ??
    DICK

Today I found another way to crash Finder while trying to set file sharing. Yesterday morning I made Finder disappear, putting my computer in suspended animation, by using the following process; Right click on a folder, GET INFO.>GENERAL>SHARED FOLDER. This caused a crash. I posted a query about this but have received no reply.
This afternoon I tried another approach; SYSTEM PREFERENCES>SHARING>FILE SHARING, then I dragged a folder into the Shared Folders window and dropped it. The folder did not appear in the window. Finder disappeared and my computer was frozen, as before.
So now two approaches lead to the same result; crashed Finder and no shared folder. I’m open to any suggestion about how to cure this problem.

  • Finder Disappears When Plugging in iPod

I have an 80GB iPod Classic and everytime I plug into a computer (i've tried a few) it causes the finder to disappear. It still mounts in iTunes and I can add and delete songs but I can't access any of the files I have saved on it. I've tried disk utility and it says that everythings fine, but when i try to create an image of the disk it crashes. I've also tried other backup utilites and I can view the files on it through them but can restore because the finder is not viewable. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this (without having to restore)?

I have some files on there I'd like to get off. I can see them using disk recovery software, but because the finder disappears i can't save them

Hi cb-anc!  Thank you for replying to my question.  The Library application has disappeared, not the library folder.  I went into the application a couple of days ago to trash some plist files and now the application has disappeared. I haven't upgraded to Lion but am still on now Leopard.

  • FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in external drive

    Hello, All:
FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in an external memory card from my Nikon camera. This also happens regardless of which USB port I plug it in to. It didn't happen when I installed Leopard two weeks ago, but happens all the time now.
Interestingly, the desktop icons (hard drives and files) DO show up when I open any software program and try to open up a file. The hard drives and files show up in the Open File windows.
    Thank you,
    Jon

THANK YOU! I've been having the same problem, and the solution you linked to worked perfectly for me. Somehow, my computer's sharing name had been deleted. Once I put that back in the file sharing preference I was able to reconnect my external drive without all Hades breaking loose.
This problem came on the heels of an aborted attempt to use a new Time Capsule (not ready for prime time) which I had to drive 50 miles to take back and replace with a new WD My Book -and I was afraid I was going to have to repeat the trip to take it back as well.

  • Photo folders in Finder disappeared

My photo folders in Finder from 6/07 to present disappeared after a crash and a rebuild. The library reverted to the last time I crashed and rebuilt which was in May. I've tried finding .jpgs over 30kb using Finder,I tried the File Salvage program, nothing. Just boom gone. iPhoto doesn't see them, presumably cuz they aren't there. I'm using iPhoto 5.04. Oh yeah, I did Disk First Aid from the boot disk as well. Any ideas? Could my database before the (most recent) crash be in the Mac bowels somewhere since apparently my rebuilt db from 5/07 was?

  • Finder disappeared, all folders on desktop disappeared

I have had problems with turning my iMac off. Now all folders on the desktop disappeared, and Finder tells me that it can' t open.
Anyone have a clue what to do?

Now, boot normally and see if the problem continues. If so, boot into safe mode, create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the issue persists.

  • Finder disappears after upgrading to Lion

    Hello,
I've had this problem since I've upgraded to Lion OS X on my Mac Mini:
When I click on Finder, no window pops up.
I can see that Finder has launched, because there is a spotlight underneath the icon.
I've tried to set the option to Assign to This Window as well as Assign to All Windows - but with random success only.
Sometimes just by virtue of random toggling of this option, the Finder pops up in one of the windows.
At other times, when I hit one of the Hot Corners to show all my Spaces, I will see Finder is open - but just for a fraction of a second, before it disappears again.
Also, the frustrating part is, when I hit the Hot Corner, to show all open applications in a particular window, Finder comes up, but when I try to click on it, it disappears again.
Can someone please guide me to the solution?

    Reinstall.
(i.e., restart, hold down 'command' and 'r', then choose recovery disk)
I just did a new install of Lion on my external disk; all went well, but when the machine finally booted up there was no Dock!
Nothing for it but to do it again.

  • "Reveal in Finder" Disappeared

About 2 weeks or so ago my "Reveal in Finder" in my right click menu disappeared, does anyone know how to get it back? I am on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 all up to date.

I used to use it in text edit and active emails in Entourage to reveal paths to files on the server.  I use the "CopyPath" program and send paths to people and they send them to me, when you right click on live text in any application really (because it is a part of Mac OSX) there is typically a reveal button that reveals the file in finder, only mine has disappeared...

  • File names in finder disappear when selected

When I select files or folders in an open window in Finder, the names disappear, but the icon still shows. Scrolling or moving the window will cause them to reappear. Also, None of the toolbox windows show information (like font name or point size) in Adobe apps until you click in and select all. Type something in, click enter, and new text disappears.
I've deleted Finder prefs, deleted font caches, repaired permissions, reinstalled LucidaGrande.dfont - no effect. Help!

Someone posted a similar problem last week that was traced to a corrupt font. See if this thread helps:

    Hi Folks:
I tried to connect my 2013 Macbook Air to a remote disk this am.  I saw the disk but not the files on the disk.  When I went back to my Macbook Air the finder was hung up.  When I restared Finder under the Force Quit menu the finder bar disappears.  I can not open a Finder window from the dock.  When I hold the buton down to cold restart i get a message" your computer is restarting"

    Thank you!

Can't Restart or Shut Down from Apple menu.
Use your power button to shut down.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

  • Browsing Time Machine back-ups in Finder, disappear....

I have a 3TB Time Machine Back-up drive connected to my iMac with 256+2TB drive.
It backs up my 256GB, 2TB drive, and a 2TB External drive with my documents, etc.
It backs up everything fine, however I notice when I browse time machine in the Finder - for instance - i select the folder with the backups, my Mac name, and a random date.
From there, I see Three Folders - one of each of my drives (256, 2TB, 2TB External). When I select the 2TB external back-up folder, sometimes it shows all the folders/documents then quickly disappears/vanishes...though its in there. Or sometimes it will show them all then only show a handful of the files in there...
Even though theyre on the back-up drive and taking up space...why are they vanishing through the Finder?
They appear to be all there when I browse with the Enter Time Machine interface. but sometimes its easier to navigate via Finder on the TM Drive...

Many of those are notorious for interfering with all sorts of things, including Time Machine.
The two recommended by our malware guru (see Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide) are free:  Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition and ClamXav.

  • Finder disappears/not working after Yosemite update

Anyone else having issues with their finder freezing, yet other apps continue to work? This started happening a lot after the Yosemite update, and never happened before! And when I go and relaunch the finder through "force quit" the folders on my desktop disappear. This would last about ten minutes before finder starts working again. And I started noticing it happens when I open Safari, could that be part of it?
Anyone have a fix? or having the same issue?
Kind of annoying considering the amount spent on a 'high end' computer....
    I have a mid-2012 macbook pro.
    Thanks!

    Run EtreCheck:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6173
    and post the results here.
    Best.

  • Finder disappears, but never shuts down

    I'll describe my problem.
Sometimes when I go to shutdown my computer, i'll click the little apple icon in the top left and then continue to shut down. However, sometimes, probably more often than not, it screws up.
Once i hit shutdown, it'll pause for a second and then say that "...failed to shutdown because the application _________ failed to quit, please force quit and then try again." It's usually stickies or word and sometimes safari that is the program that fails to quit, but after I force quit all of the open applications and try to shut down again, the finder bar will disappear, but it will never continue to shut down. Most of the time I have to just hold the power button.
Does anybody know why it does this? Thank you in advance
    SSteezy

my new macbook does this all the time, after sleeping you cannot do anything to shut it down other than holding the power button. Even if i let it boot up fresh use simple apps as soon as i close the lid it's all over it will just hang. Force quitting and relaunching makes no difference, the desktop will just clear and all i can do is go and bring up the dock and click the finder icon and that gives it back it's blue dot and brings it back to life, then try shutdown, logout or restart same thing all over.
i'm not running anything fancy it has never ever happened on my power mac (PPC)

  • Finder disappears on my iMac

Why do Finder pages disappear; how do you get them to stay available with other multiple windows open?

Mission control has select screens.  Learn how to use it through its Apple menu -> System preferences.  Certain mouse swipes affect which screens display.
