Finder display on desktop

How do I removed the finder display from the desktop? I click on the red circle and a smaller version moves to the dock, and the big display remains on the dsktop. I do this seven or eight times and, finally, the desktop is clear, but there are now seven little finder icons in the dock.
The display covers things on the desktop. I can't move it, since it demands to be in the center of the screen. I tried "hide finder" but it comes right back as soon as I open a file or program. Also in the display box is the Mac HD symbol and the network logo.
Help!
iBook G3 Mac OS X (10.2.x)

The "red circle"... does it look like this ?
And, are you clicking the button/dot on the far left of the group of 3?

  • Finder displaying deleted files

I'm having a problem with Finder that I haven't seen before. In the past few days, Finder lists deleted files along the left hand side of it's display, under "Desktop". When I select one of these files the message is "The alias "xxxx" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
Is there someway to force Finder to refresh it's view so that it don't display those deleted files? Thanks for any assistance.
    iMac G4 17" 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

After about half a day of the slow rate of removal of items by "Secure Empty Trash" (as reported in my O.P., above) a few minutes ago I noticed that the temporarily went back to about one item per second.
About 20 items were removed at the higher removal rate.
Then, the removal rate went back to about i item per minute.
Does that help towards solving the issue?

Application "FINDER"not responding,Desktop files disappeared & " also "Trash" not working svn after relaunching several times.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

iMac running 10.8.6 doesn't display entire desktop?  Reset display to various options and it doesn't display the entire desktop.  (asking for a friend, not my iMac)

I think you wanted to say 10.6.8. 10.8.6 does not exist.
The first thing I think is that zoom may be enabled. On Mac OS X 10.6.8, a way to disable it is to hold the Control key and scroll down with the mouse or trackpad until you can see the whole display. Another way would be to disable zoom in System Preferences > Universal Access

  • Finder not showing Desktop

Running Mavericks, checked Finder Preferences and 'Desktop' IS checked to show... but it doesn't show the desktop in the left column any longer.  Finder _usually_ shows all my drives including internal, external USB, FW, and NAS.  Prior to Mavericks I _never_ had the problems showing or accessing anything.  Opening files stored on NAS from Apps like Photoshop CS4 sometimes works sometimes doesn't... storing an open file or even a new file on the NAS from PS CS4 almost never works now.  Have to first store to a USB or internal drive, then copy to NAS, then delete file on USB or internal so as not to clog drive with hundreds of client graphics files that I use repeatedly.
Is Mavericks this buggy or am I doing something wrong?  I'm trying to keep my root HDD at least 1/3rd empty for performance sake.

Any chance the show / hide is not selected in your actual finder folder, not the preferences? I just went 'round with this for a half hour until I noticed that somehow the 'show' was clicked to 'hide' for some reason.....

Re-launching Finder sometimes works, but otherwise restart.

You mean you transferred the media, not the library...
Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location
The library location is in your /Music/ oflder.
Your media files (not yet in your new iTunes library ) is on the external drive.
I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.
Because you have not yet added anything to your library.
    Quit iTunes.
On the external, create a new folder named My iTunes library (or something).
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select My iTunes library on the external.
Go into Windows Explorer and move all the media files on the external into /My iTunes Llibrary/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.

  • Can the phone site be disabled and have phones display the desktop site while designing phone site?

Currently, I have a live desktop design website which is being updated regularly. I tried to begin a phone site design, but was interrupted with a change to the desktop site (I'm adding new sponsors to an event on a regular basis). When I uploaded to the FTP, the phone site was also pushed through, making an unfinished page pop up on the browser of my phone. My phone site is going to be quite large in regards to page number and it's not practical to disable and enable each individual page.
Can I have the phone site entirely disabled and have phones display the desktop site while in the process of designing the phone app? I will still need to update the desktop site during this design period.
    Thanks!

  • Finder displaying some location in chinese font

    Hi,
First time poster here. I have done an extensive search of the community but am struggling to find anything that specifically relates to me. Anyway, I ran the upgrade to Yosemite over the weekend and I am now getting some location in my Finder displayed in Chinese fonts. There is no pattern to what changes and upon reboot it may change what is shown in the Chinese characters. I have included a screenshot below:
Anything I can do to fix this?

Here's a funny thing - I thought that the fix of changing to one language had worked. It has, for most views.
However, when I look at the finder under 'Today', 'Yesterday' or 'Past Week', I find quite a lot of files either have their names or types in Japanese - when I look at the same file in its home directory, the language is back to English.
I've tried rebooting and re-starting Finder, but it seems a pretty hard error.

  • How to display a desktop file via a user event ?

    Hello All,

  • Open finder in different desktop sessions

How can we open finder in different desktop sessions.....
Or alternatively switch diff instances of finder like Alt+Tab in Windows

    Thanks X423424X,
Those aritcles were helpful in some way.
I can assign Finder to multiple desktop but if I access it from any desktop it opens the same instance of Finder.
Is there a way by which I can open different instance of Finder in different desktop.
My goal is to switch between different instances of Finder, quickly.

I connected my iPhone to my macbook to charge it. When I come to eject it I can't find the iphone icon in finder or on desktop?

With Macintosh Computers there is no Finder or Desktop icon for iPhone. Just unplug the iPhone. In iTunes application this is different and you can so-called eject it if you want.

  • Making Finder display 'hidden' files i.e. dot-files

Is it possible to have Finder display (hidden) dot-files? (This used to be possible via a Preference in 'Step so one wonders why the OS X people actually eliminated this extremely useful feature.) If you have to go to the Terminal and do cp and mv, it defeats the purpose of Finder. (Consider that Smith Micro's excellent faxing utility keeps all faxes inside a 'dot-folder'.) Surely there is a crypto dwrite?

'defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1' does it -- that's what I was looking for. Also, no need to mess with Script Editor or stop/start Finder: simply write the 'dwrite' on the command-line (i.e. in a Terminal window) and then, due to the lack of Update/Refresh in Finder (which was available in 'Step), click a couple of times on a folder or two in a Finder window to force a refresh. And the job's done. (And, as the respondent said, to turn it off, write the 'dwrite' again with a trailing 0.)
