Finder doesn't launch properly

My finder doesn't launch properly and does not respond each time I start up my mac. I can't seem to click on anything. I'm still able to open applications like iTunes but my computer will just keep bonging after i've done so. The problem will resolve after I relaunch my finder. Although this may seem like a small matter, the problem keeps coming back as and when I'm using the computer. This started only after updating the system to 10.5.8, when my screen only showed a grey screen post-installaion. I had to off the mac maunally by holding on the power button. I've updated the system to 10.6, but that wouldn't solve the problem.
Utility check is fine.
Will someone please help me? This is the first mac that i have, and i've just converted from windows, having given up hope on it.

I'm leaning towards backing up your data, erase the disk, and reinstall SL. There appears to be a system-wide problem that has hung around from your previous system. Trying to hunt down the problem will likely take longer than doing the erase and install and re-importing your data.

  • Finder Doesn't Launch on Start Up

My MacBookPro has recently had problems with the power adapter and battery. Since this morning (25 November), the Finder does not launch at start up. That is, the desktop appears after a slightly longer than usual start-up time, but nothing appears on my desktop--neither the Hard Drive, nor any of my other files on the desktop--and the tool bar at that should appear at the top of the screen doesn't. The dock will appear at the bottom of the screen, but none of the programs will launch.
My battery is as old as my computer, about four months shy of three years. In the past month, the metal inside the power cord running from the block of the adapter to the computer seems to have burned apart where the cord enters the block (the insulation has not, however, burned away). Since I won't have the money to replace this until next month, I've used electrical tape to keep the cord close to the block. The battery's life has deteriorated, according to CoconutBattery, to about %80 of its original capacity. Also, in the past week I've noticed an electrical buzz when the AC was plugged in, and I was running my computer, but the batter would not charge (it would only charge when the computer was shut down, though the buzz continued).
Are the problems with my power and malfunctioning finder related? Is it more important to replace the power adapter than the battery, or must both be replaced at the same time? Is there anyway to get the Finder to work again without doing reinstalling OS Leopard? Could my computer need a new internal hard drive (I was able to run disk utility from the OS System disk, and it recognized the usual amount of space used and available on the hard drive)? I will be in Jerusalem, Israel until June 2009. Should it be necessary, will I be able to receive face-to-face support here?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Finder doesn't work properly after waking up from sleep?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Lion installed on it. It travels back and forth from home to work with me, and at work I plug it in to an Apple Display. When I leave work, I put the laptop to sleep and take it home. At home, when it wakes up from sleep, the finder does not work properly. Often, I cannot see any finder windows, and mission control does not show my various desktops, and only shows open applications. I have already tried throwing away the com.apple.finder.plist file, and it did not help.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

Yes, change your display / colour profile to a different (or the default) profile. Has worked for myself, and many others on other forums.
    Hope that helps...

    Hi SnoLeopard!
I suggest that you first run Repair Disk & Repair Permissions.Instructions below
Also, you can manually run the Cron Tasks, also known as Maintenance Scripts, from Terminal. Instructions posted below.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger, on the Menubar at the top of the screen.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
    CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Make sure you enter the commands exactly as posted.

  • Submit By Email Doesn't Launch Outlook 2010 as Default Mail Client, though Outlook is properly set a

A form designed in LiveCycle Designer with a Submit By Email button, doesn't launch Outlook 2010 (Standard Edition) when clicked, although Outlook is properly configured as Default Mail Client.  Checked with Microsoft and followed all proper steps yet the button doesn't invoke Outlook onClick.  However, Outlook is launched if a link or html button, set to the mailto syntax is clicked.  Is this a PDF form issue for LiveCycle or is there something I am missing?  Please any ideas?

I have this problem on Win7 64bit, but it seems to work fine with XP and Vista. Not sure about Win7 32bit.
I've also seen the problem in the past with programs like Thunderbird set to be the default email client (on XP).
I've never been able to figure out if it's an Adobe or Microsoft problem. Adobe uses the MAPI settings to find the email client.

  • InDesign not launch properly

I have been using Indesign CS6 on my government computer at work for over a year.  Yesterday I tried to launch it and it will not launch properly.  It basically becomes unresponsive and doesn't fully launch.  Or it completely launches but won't open any files.  At first I tried a computer restart, which didn't help.  Then the administrator reloaded the entire CS6 suite on the computer after uninstalling it.  It still will not launch.  I did some research online and tried to find the temp folder to clear it out, but the instructions for finding it for Windows 7 didn't correspond to the folders on my computer.
At this point I have no idea what's going on and would really like to be able to resolve this problem.  I use Indesign for a lot of stuff at work and this is slowing me down.
Thanks for any help or advice you can give me to fix this problem.

  • My palm m105's touch screen doesn't work properly after a sync.

I dug out my old m105, put new batteries in and start it. On first launch it auto runs the alignment tool, and after touching all the points it goes to the main screen and works fine. No problem till here.
Now, I plug it into my old computer which still has the palm software with my apps, and I run the sync operation (from the palm device sync manager, cause I lost my cradle and I'm connected via the serial cable), and it syncs fine BUT, here comes the problem, when it finishes the sync (successfully) the touch screen is all misaligned. I can't go back to the home screen or do anything useful.

It looks like sync but nothing is happening. The sync doesn't stop by itself. Is there anybody to solve this problem? In previous versions never a problem.

I have exactly the same issues with my new 80G iPOD. I have found that when connecting to my PC, the iPOD does not start iTUNES 7. This can be resolved by stopping the iPOD Service in Computer Management, connecting the iPOD and then starting it again. Then when you start iTUNES it finds the iPOD. - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Seems like a stupid long-winded way to do things, but at least you can get some stuff on to your iPOD.
As far as using Restore goes - I just get the restoring iPOD message you described, which it blatantly isn't :((

  • Finder won't launch - tried everything - HELP!!!

    Okay...
So following all of the sudden, the finder won't launch. Clicking on it on the dock doesn't work, and I can't use force quit to relaunch it (obvious, since it wasn't launched in the first place). Rebooted several times, to no avail. Further noticing, that only a few apps will open (Safari, Mail, TextEdit), but others won't, and even then, you can't interact with anything on the desktop (i.e., opening a text file with Safari). Things like iTunes or AppleWorks won't open at all, both are which essential to me.
I've tried booting up in Safe Mode. Nothing. I tried repairing the permissions. Nothing. I tried running from the Install Disc, and repairing via Disk Utility (several times). Nothing. In fact, it did note several errors, but was unable to repair the drive. Also tried archive and restore off the 10.3 Disc 1, but wouldn't let me, as it said 10.4.9 was newer and couldn't repair through the older disc.
So does anybody have any solutions on this? I upgraded to Tiger via a downloaded update, so I don't have the Tiger disc to repair through. And I certainly don't want to go through the whole debacle with a complete reinstall with a slave drive. Anything would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Well that sounds like it could work...and I really should get a backup...
    BUT!
Saving that as the final straw, would there be any cheap (e.g. free) solutions left? I'd rather wait to buy another external drive, since I'm trying to save money now, so any immediate and cheap solutions would work best.
Hmm... I upgraded to Tiger via download, so I don't have the boot CD for it. But since I already have Tiger, would it be at all possible to get a free 10.4 boot CD to help with this problem? If I explain my plight to Support, do you think they could spare one, since it's very probable 10.4 Disk Utility would work, since the only reason 10.3 couldn't was because it was too low?
If that doesn't work, I suppose the only thing left to do would be to carry through and clone to an external. But first, do you think I could get a 10.4 disc for my problem, or would that be "forbidden" for some reason?

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • I get the message "The application "Finder" cannot be launched. -600  Read

For the last couple of days my G5 was not shutting down, so had to hold in front power button, manual sleep sometimes refused to wake and applications failed to quit. and yesterday i got the following error.
I get the message "The application "Finder" cannot be launched. -600
A reboot got things working for a bit, but on opening 'TextEdit' a document that had locked up before the reboot was displayed, on trying to save the file 'TextEdit' locked up again, trying to do a 'Preview' 'Grab' of the screen worked but then locked up 'Preview'.
So i booted into 'Safe Boot' logged in, did a virus scan using ClamXav just for piece of mind.
I opened 'TextEdit' and the same document opened as before yet i still could not save it. So i rebooted.
After reboot i opened 'TextEdit' and again the previous document appeared and this time i was able to save it. And so far no apps have failed to open or quit.
My question is, i know prior to booting into 'Safe Boot' the system fixes somethings, what does it 'fix'?
I did run the ASD (not the AHT) disk and all was ok, so thought it should be a software issue, on running TechTool Pro4 i did notice 'Finder' errors which i set to fix (just opened TechTool Pro4 and it has locked up but did 'Force Quit' unlike 'TextEdit' which has just failed to even 'Force Quit')
On looking in on the 'Console Messages' i have seen as below:

    Hi there,
My question is, i know prior to booting into 'Safe Boot' the system fixes somethings, what does it 'fix'?
In Tiger/10.4.x it disables Startup/Login Items, clears Font Caches, tries to repair the HD. loads Safe Drives, disables Airport & Quartz.
In Leo/10.5 it does more, but doesn't disable Airport, which now has a Sfe Driver I presume.
I suspect From the Console post that perhaps SAfe Boot repaired the HD, but of course that doesn't take care of any corruption done while it was muxed.
Run Disk Utility & Verify the HD, it at least will tell us something.
Is it worth running AppleJack 1.5 or similar?
Assuredly, AppleJack is great & won't hurt, & will eliminate a lot of questions if not the problem.
