Finder doesn't offer burn DVD at maximum speed

I have a fairly recent PowerMac G5 with a DVD writer that can use DVD+RW discs up to 8x. I spent a fortune on some difficult to find 8x DVD+RW discs, and then had the disappointment that Finder only offers 1 speed: 3x. What's going on? I seem to recall that Backup didn't give me a choice of speed at all (and I had foolishly assumed it had automatically used maximum speed).
By the way, I'm using the only 8x DVD+RW discs that seem to be available in the UK - Ricoh Ultra Speed.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, the Apple Store (UK) doesn't sell DVD+RW discs at all, and searching everywhere in the UK the Ricoh are the only brand of 8x RW discs available at the moment. It's a standard DVD writer, that according to Pioneers specifications supports 8x DVD+RW. I wonder why Apple hasn't updated Finder to support it.
I also cannot understand why, having bought my mac about 8 months ago, these DVD discs aren't generally available. For me, halving the burn time, is valuable. When backing up to several DVD's it's currently far too time consuming.

  • Finder always crashing when burning DVD-RWs

Hi. Whenever I try burning DVD-RWs, Finder is always extremely unreliable, usually crashing about 3 times per burn attempt. It might be because I am also using Finder to copy other large amounts of files while the DVD-RW is burning. But, it makes the whole burning process very hard because each time it crashes, I need to erase the disk again.
From what I remember, I have also had similar problems with CD-RWs, but not DVD-Rs and CD-Rs, but I am not totally sure because I do not use those formats very often.
Anyone else getting this problem? And, does anyone know if there is a way to solve this?
    -Eric

    Here's an update:
It seems that Finder is just being unstable with Burn folders in general. Almost every time that I try doing something in my burn folders (like, copying something into it, deleting something from it, or anything else normal like that), Finder stops responding. I have relaunched Finder about 10 times just for this one burn folder that I'm working on right now.
So, has anyone else experienced this?

  • I need help finding a program to burn dvds on my ibook

i have a hp dvd1040 external DVD burner, my ibook g4 reads it, and i can burn cd's,and watch dvds with it, but the program it came with to burn dvd's is only for windows, I'm looking for a free program that i can download but cant seem to find any, any suggestions? thanks!

Not sure about the capabilities of the HP external drive in question,
but with a variety of drives known to be supported in Mac OS X
for certain tasks, there are some freeware and shareware utilities.
One that may be helpful, if not in that case, in the general arena,
is this open-source Burn 1.721u freeware. It can do quite a bit:
    http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/
It may be, the better type of external DVD recording device would
be a FireWire one; as they are generally better suited with Macs.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

A Google search on this error code turns up a lot of
topics. Some point to the media as the culprit,
others point to Tiger, some to the drive itself.
Fuji isn't a bad brand of media, but it's not

Generally, an older burner can use 16X media, but
would obviously only be able to burn at the maximum
speed of the drive. It's possible that your drive
doesn't recognize the media code on the disc and
refuses to burn. Sometimes a firmware update to the

  • DVD burn doesn't offer correct speed

I have an iMac iSight (PowerMac12,1 PowerPC G5) with Matshita DVD-R UJ-846 SuperDrive. Mac OS X 10.4.8. According to the Tech Spec this iMac writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed.
If I use DVD-R media, and try to write using a burn folder, Finder says the maximum speed is 2x. Toast Titanium 5.2.3 also says the maximum burn speed is 2x, it correctly reports the disk size as 4.something GB, and offers Simulation mode burn.
If I use DVD+R media, and try to write using a burn folder, Finder says the maximum speed is 8x. Toast Titanium 5.2.3 also says the maximum burn speed is 8x, it incorrectly reports the disk size as 8 GB, and does not offers Simulation mode burn.
What on earth is going on?
I appreciate that Toast is not an Apple product, but I expect Toast is only reporting what Apple tells it, and similar faults appear in the Finder response.
Does burning from Finder verify the disk, because at the end of the process, there in no window visible saying that verification was successful?
(Note this does not seem to be related to the fault on SuperDrives relating to High-Speed media (Apple article 86130), because my drive is not a Pioneer drive).
    iMac iSight G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Note the phrase "up to". The maximum burning speed may be less than that specified on the disk blank, especially if the discs are faster than those available when the drive was manufactured. The drive make, model, and firmware version of the drive, and the brand of disc, may limit the speed to a lower value than that specified for the drive or the disc. For example, the first Quicksilver superdrive would burn 2X DVDs at 2X, but would only burn 4X DVDs (which didn't exist when the drive was made) at 1X. Try different brands of discs. I have good luck with Verbatim DVD-R. The newer Pioneer drives seem to be able to burn discs at their rated speed.
I don't know why Toast would report the wrong disc size. When using Finder's burn folders, you can click the small round button at the lower-right to see the disc size and space used. Does it show the correct size for the DVD+R discs? Are you sure they are not DVD+R DL discs, which are larger?
The Finder does verify discs it burns. If you look at the progress bar, you will see it change from "Writing" to "Verifying". If there is a verify error, it will eject the disc, rather than mount it, when finished. It will also display an error window. If the verify is successful, it will mount the disc, but not display a window. Disk Utility gives you a choice of what to do when the burn is complete, and always displays a window indicating success or failure.

  • I was attempting to burn a dvd from iMovie but after several attempts could not. Contacted tech support and they say lion iMovie doesn't support burning movies. What a rip (excuse the pun). What do I do now?

Imovie in os10 lion doesn't allow you to burn dvds. How do I do it then?

iMovie has never been able to burn DVDs.
    It's iDVD that burns DVDs.
Currently the only place to get iDVD is if you buy a boxed version of iLife 09 which you can still find at places like Amazon.
There are also alternatives to iDVD.  You can read about some of them here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2010/10/28/after-ilife-11-alternatives-to-idvd-and-iweb/
Depending on your movies size, it may also be possible to create a QuckTime version of it and burn that to a data DVD that others can play back on their comptuers.

  • Slow DVD burning - how to reach maximum speed?

I've been trying to burn DVDs at the maximum speed that seems to be supported by my new MBP (8x).
However, the burn speeds seem to fluctuate around 4x-7x.
It seems that my system is fast enough to support 8x, and I'm burning large files that aren't fragmented (so no chance of the hard drive being the bottleneck imo).
Any ideas what may be slowing things down and for any workarounds?
    Thanks!

I doubt it has to do with the media - I'm using quality Verbatim 16x certified DVD+R media.
Also, I'm not doing anything at the same time when it is maxing at 4-7x, but on the other hand when I am doing many things in parallel to burning (playing an mp3, decompressing a large zip, doing massive downloads, all at the same time), this maximum speed doesn't seem to be adversely affected.
Again, seems like the MBP is handling this 7x burn speed with complete leisure, so why not 8x?

I really appreciate the fast sent solution about my failure to burn DVDs with Lion, but I am 89 years old and think I know something about computers, but don't have a clue about ZAPPing PRAM nor RESET SMC.  I also can't find any evidence of a preserved earlier OS (Snow Leopard).  I also don't know how to partition further my drive after all this time…(I used to have Parallels partitioned) but as I said I cannot find any where on the HD SN.  Is it possible that it doesn't exist anymore?  Not too technical, please, unless that is the only possible answer to this whole delemna..

I have a Power Mac G4 with OX 10.4.11.  I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I've gotten two different sets of messages.  One states that
the disc is not readable and an error code: 0x8002006D.  The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025.
What is going on?  I need to burn discs immediately for a conference next week.

"The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025."
The error (0x80020025) refers to an unsupported drive (not disk).  I've read about relaunching the Finder to correct the problem.  Choose "Force Quit" from the Apple Menu and then choose "Finder." Click "Relaunch" and see if the drive still produces the error.  If there's no change, I'd be tempted to replace the drive.

  • Finder thinks a burned DVD is blank

After I've created and burned a DVD with iDVDand then try to play it on my computer is does not play. The computer thinks it's blank and asks what to do. If I select "Open in Finder" it mounts and is titled "Untitled DVD". This may have started after the upgrade to 10.6.3.1.1.
These DVDs will play on other DVD players such my G4, a Dell and my TV DVD player.
    Thanks for the help.

After futher checks, it appears as if my DVD drive is half broken. It can burn DVD/CDs. It can read and play commercial DVDs. It can read and play commercial Audio Disks. It can read and play a MP3 disk.
What it can not do is:
Play a burned DVD. It will not startup from a Mac OS 10.5/10.6 Install disk.
To see if the 10.5.3 upgrade caused the problem I tried to install 10.5 on a spare HD. It would read the disk and allow me to start the install, it would read the various install packages and write them to the targeted HD but when it came time to restart and install, it would restart from my main HD and not from the DVD. If I set the startup drive to the DVD it would default to the main drive.
I don't understand this!! It's like being a little bit Pregnant.
    Thanks
