Finder doesn't open folder set in preferences

It used to be that opening Finder would place me at the folder of my choice, as set in Finder > Preferences > New Finder window opens:
But as of maybe 6 or so weeks ago, on both my iMac 24 and MacBook Pro 15 (both running 10.5.8) Finder always opens only at Macintosh HD root - no matter what I set in Preferences.
Is this a known error that has crept in? Is there a workaround? It is frustrating having to drill down every time I open Finder.

Works here. Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. Since the issue's across two machines, I suspect some 3rd-party conflict or corruption.

  • Finder doesn't open folders/preview apps gone missing

So i was sorting through my gazillion of photos last night and decided to also delete some photo editing programs i do not use at the moment to have some more space on my 3 year old macbook for the time being, and using CleanMyMac app, i removed aperture 3 and lightroom2 and lightroom 3Beta. I dont know what happened but my preview app doesnt want to work anymore and quickview doesnt show previews as it did, ie only thumbnails of JPGs. I restarted the system only to find out that now even the folders images dont show, only the names underneath. And i cannot open them either. I tried opening iPhoto, but it said that it aborted as the image could not be found. Using Bridge i amanged to get into the folders and everything is still there safe and sound. Only my Apps are not there, image wise, but kinda are. And funny enough it affected skype - no text is showing in the msg window.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH

    Hi,
Thank you for the informative process to help. I just tried all of the above. My HD doesnt give error messages anymore and has been fixed, however the issue still persists.
When running permission repair i got a lot of messages. sorry for the long message but here is what it said. I am sharing because it means close to nothing to me.

  • Finder doesn't remember folder destinations?

Can anyone help me out with this. In most, if not all apps and even the finder when copying files, the folder doesn't remember the destination folder previously used. For example:
When I'm exporting clips using MPEG Streamclip, I'm digging down through my folder directory to the folder I need, export the clip and move on to the next one. The next time I export a clip, that folder is not remembered and I have to start at the route level again. Huge pain the A#$! This also happens when copying files from folder to folder on another drive. I don't get it!
This never happened in OSX 10.5. Is there something I'm missing or a function of the OS that was not written in 10.6?

I can't address most of your questions, but I do have a suggestion: Drag the destination folder to the "Places" section of a Finder window "sidebar". Then you'll be able to drag directly to that folder or select it in an open/close dialog.
This never happened in OSX 10.5.
If things worked so well with prior versions of OS X, there probably wouldn't have been a need for third-party utilities such as Default Folder X:

  • Finder doesn't open!

    Hello!
The problem I'm experiencing began immediately after I successfully (?) installed the Mac OS X Leopard DVD. After the necessary restart I noticed that the menu bar was blinking and when I'd try to open the finder the white dot would appear under the finder's icon only to disappear instantaneously. I tried rebooting but the problem persisted. When I launch another application the menu bar appears normal (that is, it's not blinking) and the app works flawlessly.
I thought I could circumvent the issue by updating to 10.5.4 through software update but when I pressed the 'install ... items' button all I got was the rotating beach ball.
I get the impression that the installation wasn't complete because when I opened system preferences to change the wallpaper, I couldn't find any reference to 'spaces' whatsoever. Moreover, the general appearance of system preferences is somewhat incomplete.
As you may have deduced, I'm not exactly a computer wizard! So, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could use layman terms in your comments.
    Thanx in advance!

Clearly your upgrade to leopard was not completely successful. try creating a new account and see if things work normally there. If not, I recommend an [archive and install|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710?viewlocale=en_US].

  • Double click doesn't open folder

when i double click on folder....the message appears as 'This file doesn't have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel
'...but double clicking opens all other files normally.....what is the problem?

Check this link: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html I think the problem is with the "Directory" file assoc. Remember to back up your durectory before you make any vmchanges and read the instructiona before

  • No icons for items on my desktop and finder doesn't open

I'm not sure what I've done, but for some reason I cannot access my hard drive or my finder (among other things). Spotlight will locate items but I can't open those items from spotlight. I recently installed CleanApp and deleted a number of files that seemed appropriate. I ran Disk Utility to repair disk permissions and mostly it said that there were various permissions that were wrong and it would not repair them. I am running Leopard 10.5.1. Also, I cannot access my external hard drive on my desktop though I can see that it is attached when I search a location through an application>open program. HELP!

It sounds like you have deleted some files that are required for the desktop to show up properly. I'm not sure exactly what will need replacing; maybe someone else here can tell you that.
My solution would be to reinstall 10.5.1; you will want to back up any important files have installed on the Mac that you won't be able to reinstall. Hopefully you can do this via your external drive, or possibly copy them to blank CDs or DVDs if possible.
One way to check on this, and/or back up any files you need would be to try and startup your Mac from the system software disks that came with it, or your Leopard disks, if they are different.

  • Clicking on enclosing folder's icon in the title bar doesn't open Finder

I create PDF booklet from Mellel document using PDF service. Preview application opens newly created PDF document. I Command+click on its icon in the document window's title bar, move cursor one level lower and click on the encompassing folder's ("temp") icon. I expect new Finder's window to open and show me PDF document selected. However, Finder doesn't open. Disk permissions repaired. One week old clean Leopard installation. When I click on the icon in the TextEdit window's title bar and do the same, encompassing Finder's folder opens in a new window. Word also opens Finder window. ONly Preview doesn't work. It used to work at least one month ago. Where the problem could be?

Please post the solution so it will help others, and mark this topic as "solved" so it is easier to track the status when browsing the forum.

Alright, I figured it out. I found the Preferences.plist in the ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder. I deleted it and restarted my macbook. Now Safari works!

When I click systems preferences, the folder doesn't open.  How to I again access systems preferences?

    Are you an administrative user?
Are you using any tools which impact System cache? If you are, stop.  They are NOT maintenance tools despite their description. They should only be used to troubleshoot cache issues.  They can create their own cache issues if you aren't careful, and I only recommend using them on systems that are already backed up.  If you were using such a tool and found out how to remove it from its developer, including any supporting documents, and don't have a backup, still backup your data at least twice, as you may be able to import the data back once erase and installing the system.  Let us know where you stand.  If you aren't using such a tool, still backup your data at least twice, as there are other things that can corrupt or disable System Preference launching, but we can't tell safely unless your data files are backed up at least twice in two separate locations.

  • Why when I drag a file to a folder it doesn't open up so I can put it in a subfolder anymore?

Before my macbook was able to allow me to transfer files to other folders easily.
My view options on the folders are columns.
I was able to drag a file to a folder, and the folder opens on the next column so show it's contents and
I can open as much subfolders until I find the folder I want my files in.
Now when i drag a file, the folder just stays idle and doesn't open. So now its more time consuming mostly transferring alot of files.

In Finder - Preferences : Is 'Spring-loaded folders and windows' checked on, and set to a short delay ?.

  • Opening an RTF in the FInder doesn't start TextEdit

On the Mac Pro (see sig. for specs.), if I highlight an RTF or TXT file in the Finder and select 'Open' (or double-click the file), the file's folder window moves to the background (as expected), the animated zoom rectangles happen (as expected) but TextEdit doesn't open.
If I Control-click the file and select 'Open-with...', it shows TextEdit as the default and, if I select it here, it opens the file.
Once TextEdit is running, 'Open' (and double-click) in the Finder work as they should. But they won't start TextEdit if it's not already running (even though it looks like an application is starting up).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve = : ^ )

    2 suggestions.
1.Quit TextEdit Now, have you tried deleting /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist Then test.
    2. Clear your LaunchServices caches...
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Software Update doesn't open a Finder window

I am helping a friend new to the Mac OS learn to use the "download only" option in Software Update. On my Mac, when the download completes, a new Finder window opens and shows the complete path to the update pkg(s). I have my Finder window preference set for column view.
I recommended that my friend use the "download only" option on 4 recent updates.
On her Mac, the downloads arrived, but a Finder window never opened. As a result, she was in a panic because she had no idea where the downloads went.
It has now been verified that they are indeed in /Library/Packages. But she had no way of knowing to look there.
I am trying to win this new user over to the Mac, and told her how Software Update would simply show her where it put the pkg files, but it truly doesn't happen on her machine.
It is the late 2006 Core 2 Duo iMac, 2.0 GHz (Intel), running 10.4.11, with almost all subsequent updates.
She is a "new user" in the sense that a) she is 78 years old and b) her previous PC ran Windows 95. She has had a very rough 2 years to date with Tiger - I receive a "HELP!" e-mail or phone call every 2-3 days. She looks for Mac Help in Mail, looks for Address Book Help in iPhoto, etc.
Excuse the digression. Any ideas why Software Update refuses to show where the downloads are? Any possible fixes? I know this is a small problem, but it's a significant one for my friend.
    Thanks

I'm aware of that approach. I personally think its handy to have the update installers all at hand before I do any updates. If an update goes badly, sometimes it can be a good idea to verify the hard drive, repair permissions, and reapply it, at least that's what I've seen recommended many times for problematic updates.
I'm trying to avoid a philosophical discussion, though, of how to do OS X updates (standalone dmg files vs. Software Update, repairing permissions, or not, safe boot, or not etc. etc.) I've seen long, long discussions. I've never used Software Update to do an update on my machine, but that's only my preference. I could be branded a complete Luddite for this.
I was just hoping that someone out there had a quick fix for the "busted" automatic Finder window - that's all I seek. If not, it's not a serious problem, and I'll move on. Just irritating to see it work 100% perfectly on one Mac and not at all on the other.
    Thank you for your input.

  • Finder crash when opening any Folder

I am a very experienced mac user and this one has me stumped. Im posting here to see if anyone else has this problem.
Finder crashes when opening a folder on the desktop
Finder crashes when using any option from the Go menu (or key combo) except Airdrop.
Once Finder window is open on Airdrop any navigation to home folder or any other folder using side bar causes Finder to crash.
Using Go To Folder causes crash, even on hidden folder like /var
Finder is OK when opening files on desktop
All other apps can browse file system and open/save OK
Google Drive is not present on system (this used to be an issue a long time a go that caused similar symptoms in other threads)
Drop Box is installed. But issue occurs even when dropbox is not running
Using spotlight to open applications still works normally.
Clicking the Finder icon in the Dock results in a non-functional blank window entitled "Window", all tool buttons are disabled.
Repeatedly opening the same folder over and over results in the message "The last time you open Finder, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself" Two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen". Both buttons have no effect except to dismiss the dialog.
    Steps Taken to fix:
Booted into recovery mode and performed repair disk and Permissions - Finder Still Crashes
Removed finder preference files using terminal
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Recent changes to system:
iTunes 11.4 Installed with normal Software Update.
    Possible Cause of Problem
Found app in iTunes that has File Sharing enabled and has a shared folder. Curious as to what was in the folder i dragged it to my desktop and double clicked. Im not sure if iTunes would have had enough time to copy the contents of the folder before i tried to open the folder. Finder crashed. This was the first time it happened.
iPhone app in iTunes that I picked in was "Ubersense".

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
