Finder don't show files

When you open a program, for example email, indesign and etc, when I go to look for a file to attach by email or by opening indesign simply it does not show the file, after some time he appears out of nowhere. when I go for mac HD and open the User folder and I click the desktop or document, or where the file is it shows.
Someone has had the same problem or know how to solve?

  • How to make Finder NOT to show files from a specific folder in "All My Files"?

    Hello!
    Can someone please advice how to make finder NOT to show files from a specific folder in "All My Files"? See the attach - I recently installed Civilization 5 from Steam and now I have a lot of unneeded files (*.log and *.ini) shown in  All My Files colder in Finder.
    I don't want to see them. Any advise?

    Using "All my Files" was very handy before all this rubbish popped up. =(

  • Finder window not showing files

    Every time I try to attach or upload a file (in gmail, photobucket, etc.) my finder window will show the folders on the left sidebar and just a blank grey box where the files are supposed to be. I've tried in Google chrome and Safari, rebooted both and restarted my computer but the same thing is still happening. Any suggestions would be super helpful, thanks!

    Finder is slow to update changes. Be patient or continue to close & reopen the window. Alternatively, relaunch the Finder: OPTION-click & hold the Finder's Dock icon and select Relaunch.

  • Finder refuses to show file-specific iconHello Folks

    Hello Folks,
    I'm having a little problem with certain types of files:
    The problem is that the corresponding icons from the application used for reading that files are not being displayed when assigning an application to that file.
    For example: when I do touch xyz.sql in the Terminal.app a white icon is displayed in the Finder, since no application is assigned to the filetype sql in the Launch Services Database.
    Now let's say I want to open that file with jEdit, so I right click it > 'Get Info' > and set 'Open with' to jEdit.
    Then the file opens with jEdit but the white icon remains!
    Which is weird because when I take a look at the Info.plist file within jEdit.app I find the following:
    <dict>
    <key>CFBundleTypeExtensions</key>
    <array>
    <string>*</string>
    </array>
    <key>CFBundleTypeOSTypes</key>
    <array>
    <string>TEXT</string>
    <string>**</string>
    </array>
    <key>CFBundleTypeIconFile</key>
    <string>file.icns</string>
    </dict>
    That tells me that files with any extension and of any Type can be opened and then get the corresponding icon assigned.
    Now, when I change the type of the file to TEXT (using SetFile -t TEXT file.sql) the specific Icon appears!
    Am I missing something here? I rebuilt the Launch Services Database and tried to remove the CFBundleTypeOSTypes and/or CFBundleTypeExtensions from the Info.plist (and I restarted the Finder after these actions).
    Is there a specific way of telling Finder just to use the filename-extension?
    Oh, and by the way, changing the type to 'AAAA' does not have an affect either, so it seems to me the '**' from CFBundleTypeOSTypes is being completely ignored.
    Thank you for any advice!

    I managed to get the icons displayed! Even though it's a dirty hack .
    That's what I did:
    (Since I like TextWrangler fine and it has the same shortcomings as jEdit, e.g. not displaying a symbol when I assign it to a sql file, I'll explain it on TextWrangler)
    0. open Terminal.app and go to /Applications/TextWrangler/Contents/
    1. do a vim Info.plist
    2. add the folowing dict as a child of "<key>CFBundleDocumentTypes</key>":
    <dict>
    <key>CFBundleTypeExtensions</key>
    <array>
    <string>sql</string>
    </array>
    <key>CFBundleTypeIconFile</key>
    <string>TextWranglerTextDoc.icns</string>
    <key>CFBundleTypeName</key>
    <string>SQL file</string>
    <key>CFBundleTypeOSTypes</key>
    <array>
    <string>**</string>
    </array>
    <key>CFBundleTypeRole</key>
    <string>Editor</string>
    </dict>
    3. rebuild the Launch Services Database (OS X Tiger): /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frame
    works/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user
    4. restart the Finder: killall Finder
    Done. For what reason ever the Finder won't accept a "*" instead of sql as stated here: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPRuntimeConfig/Artic les/PListKeys.html
    If you want other suffixes than sql being recognized by TextWrangler just add more <string>xyz</string> to CFBundleTypeExtensions or create new dicts.
    However this remains a complicated act just for changing some icons .
    Hope it helps somebody.

  • Finder stalling, not showing files

    I have been having trouble with Finder and file dialog boxes ever since I installed Mavericks last month. When I select Desktop, Documents or the like in finder or a file dialog box, the system stalls, as though it's searching some ancient & slow drive. I'm on a MBP retina with a 768GB SSD. When I was using Mtn Lion, that thing always snapped files up instantly.
    I tried deleting Finder preferences and such but no luck. Eventually my files show up, but it's almost like the system SBOD for quite some time. Does anyone have a fix for this yet? I've read of other with the same issue and no one has a clear solution. This is dissapointing considering we're on the 10.9.1 revision.
    Thanks!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
    Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
    in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Finder doesn't show file saved in certain folder

    Something very strange is happening to my mac.
    In my Documents folder there is a folder named "CV". Whenever I try to save files to this destination (CV), these files won't show (at least immediately --- let's say in the next minutes) in the folder. BUT if I search for them in the finder, here they are! I can find them, open them...
    If I save the same files to another location (the Documents folder, the Desktop), they are immediately saved to the specified destination.
    Can anyone explain what is happening?

    OK, let me give you 5+10 points and mark this problem solved!
    Thanks! I think that maybe it'sreally like you said - that some apps maybe prompted and today I noticed that the Finder doesn't, and got confused...

  • Finder doesn't show file delete warning message

    I think that some time ago when I deleted any file or folder in the Finder, it showed me warning message... Now when I select file and press Command+Backspace (Delete), file goes immediately to the Trash without any warning message. Is this correct or there had to be some warning? I looked in Finder's preferences, but couldn't find any check-box for that... If there should be a warning message, how can I restore it?
    Thanks in advance!

  • The finder will not show files on my hard drive but will show files on my usb drives

    when I click on my Main iMac hard drive the window doesn't open but when I click on my one of my USB drives the widow opens and I can see the files.Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Win

    Might try this...
    Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Don't show file automatically

    I'm a developer and I have this function that grabs data and I export it to a pdf file and then I either email it to someone or send it through as a fax.
      Right now, since we installed the latest Adobe Pro, every time I do this, the file pops up in Adobe and I have to close it out.  I sometimes have over 50 entries of data that I need to make files for to send out automatically.  This gets quite cumbersome and takes a really long time because if I'm working on something, the pdf file will pop up in front in Adobe and then I need to stop what I'm doing and close the Adobe file, only to have another one open (the next entry in line) in another minute.
    I was wondering if there is a setting somewhere in Adobe that doesn't have files like this open automatically? I just want to export the file to a pdf and then send it out.  I don't need or want to view the pdf file at all.

    These functions were actually created before I was here, so this is what we're using (with Telerik Reporting):
    Public Shared Sub ExportReport_PDF(ByVal Report As Telerik.Reporting.Report, ByVal Path As String)
            Dim reportBytes As Byte() = ExportReport_PDF_Bytes(Report)
            Dim FS As New IO.FileStream(Path, FileMode.Create)
            FS.Write(reportBytes, 0, reportBytes.Length)
            FS.Close()
        End Sub
      Public Shared Function ExportReport_PDF_Bytes(ByVal Report As Telerik.Reporting.Report) As Byte()
            Dim rp As New Telerik.Reporting.Processing.ReportProcessor
            Dim X As New Telerik.Reporting.Processing.ReportProcessor
            Dim Z As Telerik.Reporting.Processing.RenderingResult = X.RenderReport("PDF", Report, Nothing)
            Return Z.DocumentBytes
        End Function

  • Finder doesn't show files that Terminal shows

    Running 10.4.4. I have a zip file that expands into a folder containing many subfolders. Finder tells me that the majority of these folders are empty despite the zip file being several MB in size. Opening some, but not all, of the folders forces Finder to tell me what's really there but this doesn't work for all of the folders. I can go into Terminal and see the contents of every folder. What's going on here? This has never happened before. Repairing permissions didn't fix it. It's also happening with other folders not related to the zip file.

    Here's an update. The zip file in question contains the latest version of a suite of Java applets that I've been using for some time. The developer just sent me the previous version and the latest version, but the latter was compressed with a different compression tool; he didn't say which one. I moved the two zip files onto my iBook G3 running OS X 10.3.8 and they both unzipped correctly. However, under 10.4.4 only the one compressed with the different compression tool unzipped correctly. This suggests a bug in 10.4.x does it not?

    As happened on Snow Leopard and some updated fixed it, now i have the same problem in Lion. I did a clean instalation. Anyone else have the same problem?

    Yeah, Christiantf is right, I think I was encountering the same issue.
    I solved it installing Itunes 10.5.1(42), even if I'm not using Itunes at all.
    Albumarts will now appear in every folder from the finder.

  • Finder stopped showing file info

    Running OSX 10.6.8 on iMac. Recently noticed that Finder has stopped showing file info and thumbnails when I click on files in list view with columns. Repairing privileges and restarting has not resolved the problem. I'm able to see file info when I hit command-I, but otherwise, simply clicking on the file name no longer shows the mini preview that's so convenient. How to restore this function in Finder?

    Long shot probably.
    Do a backup.
    Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
    Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
    If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Xquartz finder not showing files

    Hello there,
    I have a problem, as soon as I install xquartz, Finder has troubles showing files in SOME folders.
    With terminal, all files are there and the permissions also look ok!
    As soon as I remove xquartz, it seems to work fine again, but I need it as I want to play around with SPINE.
    As it is a problem with finder, not with xquartz I wanted to ask around for help here.
    I tried the following:
    - kill and relaunch Finder
    - disk utility > repair permissions
    - moved com.apple.finder.plist
    Thanks for any advice, greatly appreciated!

  • The preview and cover flow don't show thumbnails of the quicktime videos. How to fix?, The preview and cover flow don't show thumbnails of the quicktime videos. How to fix?

    When I upgraded to Mavericks the cover flow or the preview pane in finder don't show a thumbnail of an uncompressed quicktime movie. I use this to search for the correct clip so it was very useful in prior versions of OS X but appears to be left off in Mavericks. If anyone knows a work around I would appreciate it since I work with thousands of video clips. To click each one seems very tedious.
    Also, when I click on an uncompressed video, quicktime "converts" the video to some different format. Why doesn't it just play the video instead of converting? Is there a way to stop this? I hate have to say - no I don't want to save this file.
    Arrgh!

    Does anyone in the community have insite into this issue (same with animation compressed QT's). Is this just the way it is moving forward (a terrible thing) or is it a bug that will be fixed in the near future. Apples silince on if this is a "feature" or a "bug" is frustrating.
    Thanks.
