Finder, Exposé, Spaces etc- massive problem!

After coming home from school I discovered that my MacBook has decided not to automatically launch finder upon start up (having to click it in the dock), and exposé and spaces do not work (using the keys at the top of the keyboard and ctrl + +arrow key+ for spaces). One other thing I've noticed is that it does not automatically launch start up items.
After repairing the disk permissions and verifying the disk I restarted my system and found that I'm still having the problem, I'm not sure what else to try and don't want anything to go horribly wrong, I've never had any 'real' problem like this with my Mac before and it's quite upsetting.

Never mind I just fixed the problem by searching around the community and finding this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4024312
Anyway it was as simple as holding down the application in the dock and just selecting "Options -> Assign to -> None (rather than All Desktops).

I know many have this issue but i can't find a solution to the problem. i get message saying insuffisiant disk space in the volume iPhoto library and i have plenty of space available. i have the new macbook pro with retina display. i have never seen this message before and i have 2 other macbooks and have had many other also. i am assuming this is a problem with the new macbook retina. does anyone know the exact fix to this issue? i have seen many sugestions to try to fix this issue but none have solved the issue for anyone that i can find in the Apple Support Community. thank for looking into this in advance.
******A true apple fan********

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

• IPod Classic having massive problems (Not able to connect, Music gone, Etc)

First of all I bought my iPod classic little over 6-7 months ago.
1.About three months in my iPod started to erase my music... So I reset it, didn't work, and restored it to the factory setting.
Now Starting 3 weeks ago, it started to have this massive problems, The musics disappeared even though I disconnected it. So I restored it..AGAIN, but it still does it with new musics.
2. Now it will not even connect itself to the computer anymore. I've erased the iTunes, Reset the iPod, Restored it, but it will work when it feels like it (I've also tried my friends iPod...Wire...Connector.)

Hi, I have not made back up. So I will be loosing all data and apps and music. Do you know any other way to overcome and save all the music and apps in my ipod? My ipod s working fine only problem is I can sync it to itunes it says-"itunes cannot read the contents of the ipod " Go to the Summary tab in ipod preference and click Restore to restore this ipod to factory settings". It is the same error message. Is there any alternate ways to save my music photos and apps ?

• Query needed to find reclaimable space in db

10.2.0.4
Linux 4.
Hi.
On a test database I suspect there are a lot of objects that are not needed that are taking up valuable disk space. These may include tables that are backups of tables etc.
Does anyone have a tested query to seek out these objects? They will have probably been named test, or backup, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Apparently you want to find candidate junk objects to discard. This is a quite specific subset of the overall issue of finding reclaimable space. In the overall issue a lot of attention should be paid to whether temporarily supressing some free space (due to massive deletions, for example) is worthwhile. In the subset you inquire about, if you can identify the junk it is almost certainly a win to discard it. Some shops have naming standards for objects not officially sanctioned in the production schema. My favorite is the prefix JUNK_<initials>_, so that all the objects can be found quickly with the wildcard on the efficient end of the query, as in:
select owner,object_name,object_type
from dba_objects
where object_name like 'JUNK%'
order by object_name;
or
select owner,object_name,object_type
from dba_objects
where object_name like 'JUNK_MWF%'
order by object_name;Even just the naming convention makes it easy to identify candidate objects, and if you have rules about creating "JUNK" objects such as maintaining a log with expiration dates and purposes, then further inquiry is easy. Having the object's sponsor's initials at hand makes a personal interview possible if the log entries are not useful, and if an expiration date is provided you can simply use the log table as a list to control deleting discardable objects.
In your case you are dealing with catching the horses after the stalls and barn door were left open. Up to now I've written more about closing the barn door for future efforts.
For the cleanup, the similar query with the like predicate '%TEST' and other candidate name templates should suffice. Depending on how creative folks have been spelling TST and BCKUP, you may want to play with the regex functions. Just be sure to treat the generated list as a list of candidates. Depending on the length of the list you can then either generate the appropriate drop statement by type or simply type them into a file for review and execution. Sending out the list of objects to be deleted with a reasonable warning period is highly recommended, since having the ability to create unknown objects often implies sufficient rank to ignore organizational rules. Whether creating an individual object export prior to the drop will vary from site to site and by the size of the object to be dropped.
Good luck,

• Solaris 10 with Adaptec 7902 with 36G or 73G, not correctly find disk space

I'm trying to install Solaris 10 x86 on an server on TYAN platform k8sr. Its got an Adaptec 7902 SCSI controller, without RAID.
It used 36G drive - Solaris interface thinks there is only a 9G drive in the system!
I change drive on 72G drive - Solaris thinks there is only a 18G drive!!!! After update, so on!!!!
Solaris 10 Express find full space drive, but not boot from this drive, Solaris 9 find full space drive, but not load to this drive. I'm test this drive on Windows, and FreeBSD - it's good
Please, help me,
Thanks

• How to skip the spaces, ' etc when passing the parameter to srw.run_report?

Hi, I have got problem with passing parameter to srw.run_report. It seems it doesn't take the special symbols such as space, ', etc.. the statement is like:
srw.run_report('report=test1 p_name='| |:p_title);
if :p_title is "JOE", there is no problem to pass it, but if the :p_title is "JOE LI", then the value of the parameter can be passed to p_name.
Does any one know how to skip those special symbols in the string when passing it to srw.run_report. Thank you very much.
Joe

Hi,
Try this :
srw.run_report('report=test1 p_name='| |
chr(34)| |:p_title| |chr(34)
);

• Massive problem with iMac i5

Today I bought a new i5 iMac with 8Gig of ram. I had massive problems with the instillation of Lion. I spoke with Apple for nearly 1.5 hours. I finally got it working and now it has crashed 9 times in 30 minutes. Why?? Please Help. I am going to take it back to the shop tomorrow.

Thanks fro your quick reply.
I get the slow darkened screen that moves down the until it says that I have to hold down the poer button for a forced restart.
I tried opening all the really big memory hogs ll at once, eg Final cut pro, apature, imove HD etc, and that was no problem. It seem sto be completly random.

• Massive Problem With Itunes

I haven't been able to use my ipod or itunes for months and I cant figure out why. Everytime I try to open itunes I get this message
"The folder 'itunes' cannot be found or created, and is required"
I have tried reinstalling itunes and creating the folder and nothing seems to work. About a month ago I lost everything which was on my 30 gig ipod and since then I cant get itunes to work on my computer. The only thing I can think of is that I moved the folder to another drive and now I can't find it anywhere and I don't know what to do to fix this massive problem.
Plz help me out if you can...

folks getting that complication where "My Music" doesn't appear as an option in TweakUI have had some success using the alternate technique from this Nigel Carpenter post:

My iPhone 4 reboots while using apps like
Skype, Where's My water, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds Space etc...
I already tried reformatting my phone.. Erased all content and settings.. And still the same..
BTW my phone runs on latest iOS 5.1

Restore as a New phone. Do not restore your backup. Add your apps back. If the problem still exists you have a hardware problem. If this fixes it you have a corrupt backup.
This assumes your phone is not jailbroken. If it is all bets are off.

• System Preferences Exposé & Spaces Quit Unexpectedly

All other preferences work as normal. (System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces) just shows "Loading Exposé and Spaces..." and nothing comes up. If I select it again I get a Problem Report for System Preferences. This menu function was accessed within the last week and was functioning as normal. As far as this problem goes, I have repaired the disk permissions, cleared the caches at "~/Library/Caches" and the preferences at "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist". This removal of the plist hasn't reset the spaces or exposé to default -- they remain as were configured earlier this week.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
May or may not be related to the issue : (although I feel that this may have nothing to do with it)
This week had to take it to the Apple Store for a trackpad height adjust. There also was a diagnostic (looked like some kind of os9 window) and they probably reset the pram. Upon booting at home I had noticed that my settings for my home network were gone, and had to reconfigure. Also a couple of 3rd party programs needed a reinstall.

Ya, I'd say it's likely something in your preferences folder. What you could try is quitting all your apps, moving all of the plist files to a new folder and testing it. If this fixes it then put those plists back 5 or 10 at a time until you've determined which file is casuing the problem.
This suggestion sounds in the right direction. I will probably have to do that soon but I am a bit confused about "all of the plist files." Would I do this to the entire ~/Library/Preferences?
I also used Pacifist to extract and install Expose.prefPane and I noticed something different for Expose.prefPane. The Sharing & Permission under Get Info show: username(Me) /Read & Write, staff / Read only, and everyone / Read only. The other .prefPane files show: system / Read & Write, wheel / Read only, everyone / Read only. This may or may not be at fault, but I am wondering if you or anyone else's /System/Library/PreferencePanes shows this to be standard.

• I'm exhausted of trying to find a solution to a problem created by Apple. I have moved to iCloud, following your instructions and now I can not use my mobileme e-mail address. How can I contact directly with Apple, not just an automatic reply phone number

I'm exhausted of trying to find a solution to a problem created by Apple. I have moved to icloud following all your instructions and now I can not use my mobile me e-mail address. I can not activate icloud because when I put my e-mail address it answers that somebody is already using my address. I have my old e-mails, but I can not receive any e-mail or send them.
I have contacted Apple Technical Support in Spain and I was sent an e-mail saying that I have to call a phone number and when I call it is always an answering machine who answers that says that I have to pay 50€ for a consultation or wait for 10 minutes. When I have made the consultation it was never mentioned that I have to pay 50€ for a phone consultation. If I don't want to wait I have to pay for the Apple Tecnical Support which cost 250 €, this was not mentioned in the technical support page.
Can somebody let me know how can I contact Apple in another way in order to talk with a human being or chat directly? I was very happy just using my mobileme e-mails, I didn't need any clouds and I was force by Apple to registered if I want to continue using my mobileme e-mail address.

Sandra,

• The upgrade to Firefox 4 is causing massive problems with my computer. How do I uninstall it and go back to using the previous version?

Firefox 4 is absolutely awful - it is causing massive problems with my computer. How do I uninstall Firefox 4 and go back to the previous version of Firefox?

According to the instructions given on the Norton Community forum under "Other Norton Products/Comcast-Customers - Norton Toolbar Problem in Firefox 10", I have done everything necessary. And I do have a Norton toolbar (Safe Web and Identity Safe) when I open Firefox 10. As was mentioned in the previous posts here, you need to run manual LiveUpdate then reboot until you have version 5.2.0.13. Then reboot and run manual LiveUpdate again and reboot once more. One thing that I noticed is that Norton never told me that it had updated the patch for Firefox 10, so I didn't know. I guess if you have the toolbar when you run Firefox 10, then you have done it all.

• I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto try to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files. Big problem. What to do?

I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto ties to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files. Big problem. What to do?

Simple:
File -> Export to get your photos out of the iPhoto Library. In the Export dialogue you can set the kind to Original and you'll get back exactly what you put in.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Once exported, you can then trash the iPhoto Library - just drag it from the Pictures Folder to the trash and empty it.
After that, if you're entirely neurotic about it, just put the iPhoto app in the trash and empty it.

• When I click onto the firefox webbrowser, I get the message "firefox has stopped working, windows will close the application to find a solution to the problem " This has been going on for several days, I've had to go back IE to access web pages

When I click onto the firefox webbrowser, I get the message "firefox has stopped working, windows will close the application to find a solution to the problem."

I had this exact same problem. I found this fix and it worked for me.
Step 1:
Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support and copy the filen named QTMovieWin.dll.
Step 2:
Browse and past that file into C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes.
Hope this helps you. I wish I could remember where I saw this originally so I could thank them.
Good Luck.
