Finder fails to list shared drives by clicking sidebar

I have a strange problem that is persistent and although not always repeatable, happens very often, and by that I mean several times a day. The problem was also there with Leopard, and I'd hoped Snow Leopard and it's subsequent updates might fix things, but they didn't, so I'm posting here.
I have a Mac mini running as a kind of server / appliance. It's running standard Snow Leopard, but sharing a collection of 6 Firewire 800 2TB MyBook Studio II drives with the other Macs in my home.
The problem that I'm having is when I click the Mac mini icon in the Shared section of the finder sidebar, around 50% of the time, I get a spinning wait icon, and after a fairly long period of time, an error message saying that I can't connect to the Mac mini.
If I do CMD+K and type afp://'Mac mini IP address' it works fine, connecting in seconds, and asking me which share I'd like to connect to. Usually after I've connected in this way, I can go back to the Shared part of the side bar, click Mac mini and it will connect and show me all the shares fine. This isn't always the case, but usually.
The Firewire drives that I'm using do have their own power saving function which will power down the drives if there's no activity for approximately 10 minutes. They will power on in about 20 seconds when needed, and this clearly isn't the problem, because the CMD+K option works fine and lists the drives without turning them on. Obviously if I try to connect to one of them, I'll have to wait for the drives to spin up, but everything connects and works fine.
Because the CMD+K option works so well, I have a feeling that this might be to do with DNS. I am using an Airport Extreme 802.11n single channel for my router, so I'd be surprised if this was the case, I'm all Apple here.
Does anyone know how I might fix this problem, or even some things that I can do to try?

Hi, How can I get Finder to only search the drive selected in Sidebar?
I've been given a CD with lots of pictures on it, organised into 20 folders with further sub-folders. I KNOW there is a movie in there that I need to put in my presentation.
I select the CD drive in sidebar and type .MOV into the search widget. Finder then returns all the .mov files on the HD.
I just want to quickly scan through the .MOVs on the CD. Is there a way to do this?

After you enter your search term and the search results window is open you will find a tab bar in the window. Click on the CD tab which will then present the results for the CD instead of your hard drive.
Spotlight defaults to the startup volume until you click on the tab for the desired drive, folder, etc. It's aggravating, and it's been reported to engineering. So far the behavior has not been "fixed." Maybe in a future release of OS X.

Phantom Shared Drive

I installed Leopard on my 12" Powerbook and love it. I do have one problem. When I open the Finder, it shows 2 Shared Drives available. One of them is my iMac, the other one I have no idea what it is. The PB connects to it as guest but I can't do anything with it. When I Get Info, the drive shows the Windows Blue Screen of death icon. I can't eject this drive and it always shows up.
The drive is not available on my iMac which is on the same network. My network has WPA2 security and MAC address filtering so its fairly secure therefore I doubt there is a neighbors computer connected to the network. If there were, I assume it would show on my iMac too.
Any ideas?

My mistake. In com.apple.sidebarlists.plist there is a list of every volume that has ever been attached to the computer, but not of servers themselves.
FWIW, I don't know if this volume list is ever purged: on my system, it contained about 105 items, including (I think) every dmg I mounted as a volume since installing the OS, volumes on external drives that have since been reformatted, & volumes on remote servers that had been attached as shared volumes. Using Apple's Property List Editor, I deleted the entire array from the plist & it has since been recreated, but contains only the volumes I have attached since that time.
However, I did this after observing that the old computer name persisted only briefly in "Shared" after changing it, so I don't think that had any effect on my results.
AFAIK, mDNSResponder should produce the results I saw since the computer should use its current name with Bonjour services. When I perform the dump described in the man page for mDNSResponder (sudo killall -INFO mDNSResponder), there is certainly no trace of the old computer name(s) in the system log.
It would be interesting to know if there is for Javier Monllor (or for anyone else with the same problem).

Finder does not show flash drive but it is mounted.

After reformatting a drive to FAT it was automounted to the /Volumes directory. I checked and it is there with all of the content there. Disk Utility also is telling me that it was mounted. The weird part is that the Finder does not have the drive in its sidebar. What else is weird is that other drives come up in the sidebar. Reformatting the same device and changing the volumes name will make it come up.
How can I make it show up in the finder?
Is it possible that I somehow blacklisted volumes with that name?

Neither Spotlight nor Finder searching SHARED drives

I have two shared drives (both accessed via a Time Capsule) on my local network (LAN). I have total access to these two drives (reading,writing,etc.).
How can I perform a search for a particular file on these drives?
When I attempt to search via Finder, I enter the name of a file I know exists on one of these drives (just to test the process out) in the Search box in Finder. I click the Shared and File Name buttons, but nothing happens, no files found, nothing, zip, nada.
I know this file exists on one of these drives.
Why don't I see any results when I attempt to perform a search on Shared drives?
(NOTE: This works if I search on "This Mac").
Ideas?

Apparently this is a bug in 10.5.6.
Several posts throughout these forums indicate that many folks are experiencing the same issue.
We can search within individual folders on a Sharepoint, but cannot perform a search of the entire sharepoint.
Strange.
Apple, are you aware of this?

Odd behavior in Finder and Shared Drives

As you can see from the screenshot below.. I am seeing some very odd behavior in Finder regarding a Shared Network Drive I have attached to another Mac.
Details:
Mac with Shared Drive attached is a 2011 iMac running 10.8.2
Mac with issue in Finder is 2011 Mac Mini running 10.8.2
When I go to the shared drive via Finder on the Mac Mini and open it, it shows multiple copies of the Shared Networked Drive. If I click on one of those copies it opens up another copy of the shared drive which also includes even more copies of the shared Drive inside.
Trying to eject the Shared HD via the Mac Mini results in the following msg...
“Sea2TB” is a partition on a disk that has 2 partitions. Do you want to eject “Sea2TB” only, or both partitions?
The problem is that HD is not partitioned.. It has only one partition called Sea2TB
Ejecting the HD from it's Host iMac... results in a normal ejection without this message about there being two partitions...
I have tried rebooting both Macs.. Removing and re-adding the share on the Host iMac... Renaming the Drive and so far this issue keeps returning.
It is the only shared Hard Drive that has this issue.. I am sharing another 4 HDs via the iMac to the Mac Mini and none of the other shares show up as multiple copies in Finder.. Only the Sea2TB share...
Any ideas anyone as to how to fix this?

Macbook Pro fails to access Windows XP shared drives

Last fall, my wife bought a Macbook - our first. We have two Windows XP systems that have file sharing turned on. One is a central file storage with an attached USB drive.
I Don't recall what I did, although I know I was following directions on networking, but my wife's Macbook with OS X 10.5.6 can see and fully access the Windows shared drives. They show up in Finder under "Shared." She is not sharing her drive with the network and that's just fine.
I purchased a Macbook Pro a week ago. I have tried all the suggested functions but I cannot see the shared drives. The Finder --> Connect to server function does not find the machines or drives.
I phone Apple support and they said they don't support file sharing off the PC. I have read dozens of articles with no results. Any help?

Assuming all nodes on the network are being assigned IP addresses then you should be able to connect by IP address. To find out what IP address your PCs are using select Run from the Start Menu, key in cmd or command. You should now be in DOS/Prompt. At the blinking cursor key in ipconfig /all followed by a return carriage. It should list the IP address the PC is using. Provided its set to Share its drive then on your mac select Connect to Server (command+k) from the Go Menu and key in smb://IPaddressofPC.
Provide a user name and password when prompted. This would be the PC's local admin account name and password.
Having said that you should be able to 'see' the PCs under the Shared section in the Sidebar anyway? You could try creating another Admin account, logging in with that to see if the behaviour changes? Ditching the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist from /Users/Home/Library/Preferences followed by a restart might help? You could also try toggling File Sharing on/off.

Cannot see external hard drive in finder even though listed in Disk utility

I have a major problem with my G5 after file vault became corrupted and I had to erase the user account with all my data after consultation with an Apple Store Genius.
I have an external Iomega external back up but the finder does not list it anymore and it does not appear on the desktop. It is seen by disk utility however and I have run disk repair which says its fine. When it is not mounted, the icon next to the hard drive name (in disk utility) is a firewire external drive, but when I do mount it it appears as the unrecognized file type icon (the icon with the piece of paper with a bent corner). It also doesn't show up when I enable hidden folders.
It does however mount on my son's iMac. All my data is on this external disk and its my only copy left.
Please can you help me or point me toward a previous thread. I have tried ejecting it and remounting the HD after turning it off but no luck.

Weblogic 10.3.5 Install Failing on Windows 2008 R2 64bit Shared Drive

I am attempting to install Weblogic 10.3.5 on a Windows 2008 R2 64bit machine.
This will be part of a scaled out OBIEE environment.
As per Oracle's instructions (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/bi.1111/e10539/c4_installing.htm#BIEIG2028) I am attempting to install the Middleware Home Directory to a shared drive (DFS).
When I get past the "Choose Product Installation Directories" I get a "Insufficient Disk Space" error saying there's 0 MB available on my shared drive, which is clearly not the case.
I have verified that I have full access to the shared directory.
I have also tried with several other non-DFS directories.
Tried with java version 1.6.0_24 Oracle JRockit build R28.1.3-11-141760-1.6.0)24-20110301-1430-windows-x86_64
Tried with java version 1.6.0)24 64-bit server (no JRockit)
All with the same results.
I've seen some people post about getting the same error in Mac installs where the solution was to specify -d64 on the commandline, but this is not in the windows 1.6 JDK. I tried -server, but got the same results.
I've also seen some people post about getting the same error in Unix installs where the solution is to point to a different version of df which is used to check space on the file system.
I have yet to find a solution in Windows 2008 64bit that applies to me.
Any ideas?

External HD not showing up in Shared Drive in Finder

I upgraded my Early-2011 MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Everything is fine except my Western Data external HD is no longer displayed under Shared Drives in Finder, nor is it found in Disk Utility. However, when I plug the HD directly into my MBP via USB, everything is fine: It appears in Shared Drive and is found Disk Utility. I'm really stumped because prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion, I made sure my drivers and firmware was up to date on my external HD as well as my Belkin N+ router. Just for a point of reference, I think it's a Mountain Lion issue because I have a white MacBook running Snow Leopard and it has no problems with the external HD. That's why I am holding off on upgrading it until I find out how to resolve this issue with my HD. I appreciate any input!

Same problem here: Mac Pro that has a large external drive attached to it that I use as the Time Machine drive for our other Macs. All 2 Macs have been upgraded to ML. Everything worked fine back to thru all OS X versions, all the way back to Leopard. Only way I can get the sharing to work is to turn off sharing on the Mac Pro and then turn it back on. It stays available for a day or two and then no longer is accessible from the other Macs Finder or Time Machines. However iTunes home sharing and Apple TV can still get to the files on the Mac Pro.

I am trying to print a list of all my music. For example, main folder is BEATLES. Subfolders are Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, etc...
and I want to view and print all the subfolders. This is a recovery project after my hard drive failed. I know this is truly a "finder" question and will double post there.

Hmmmm, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I have a nvidia geforce gtx 670mx. The nvidia website does link me to the 340xx driver for that card, but downgrading to that version still has the same issue. I suspect the issue is in Xorg, since it seems to load the module, but then decides it doesn't have a driver to run for some reason.

Shared drives no longer network accessible on iMac running Mountain Lion.

Hey all,
I've been searching the community on and off for weeks and have not been able to come to a solution. I have an external hard drive connected to a 2007 iMac running Mountain Lion that has successfully been shared on my network for over two years starting with Snow Leopard. Just recently I noticed the shared drives were no longer showing up on my networked Macs (running anything from Leopard to Mountain Lion). What's odd is the shared drives will connect and show up for the first 5 minutes or so after the iMac is restarted, but will go offline soon after. The iMac shows up in the side bar, but I get the dreaded "Connection Failed" message in Finder when I click "Connect As" after the shared drives first go away. Screen sharing works fine all the time when accessing the iMac. I've tried everything on the iMac from disabling the firewall completely to renaming it on the network to disabling SMB on all shared partitions. Anyone have any suggestions?

What version of OS X are you installing on the external drive? Is the drive partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled?
