Finder fails to open
Okay, I'll just start by saying I done something very silly and underestimated the effects this would have on my computer.
I tried to hide Finder from the application switcher (⌘ + tab) but this didn't work so well. I edited the 'Info.plist' file for finder.app and I tried restoring, removing the lines etc and this just is not working. Each time I boot my mac even under different users I am greeted by 'Finder quit unexpectedly' and no matter what I select (out of 'Ignore' 'Report' or 'Reopen') it keeps bringing itself to the front of all windows.
This is the guide that I followed: http://blog.joshdzielak.com/blog/2012/02/12/remove-finder-from-the-app-switcher- in-mac-osx/
Should I re-install Mac OS Lion? If so, is there a way for me to keep personal files and applications?
Should I visit my Apple store and hope a genius can fix this?
Can any of you help me? If so, how?
Advising people to not hack their systems is bad advice, not much exciting would happen in my opinion. I didn't have any backups (have never taken one) and lost my install disk.
I restored the system using archive and install from the recovery partition on my laptop. This evidently replaced the file and after updating my system using Software Update I was back up and running.

Finder failed to open and now it askes me to restart as soon as I turn it on.
At first My finder would not open, and it kept asking me if I wanted to report the problem. when I restarted it the same thing happend over and over again. then It just started to have problems just logging in it would freeze after I typed in the password. And now It just turns on telling me to restart. when I do It askes again... what is there I can possibly do now to fix this?
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. -
Finder fails to open when starting up macbook pro due to low disk space (possibly)
Dear forum,
I have a Macbook Pro (13") running snow leopard and have a partitioned hard drive (half OS X and half Windows 7). This morning I was using the Mac side and was running low on disk space (very low) so I was moving desktop files into folders to free up some space. I restarted the computer to see what the free space was but the computer stopped/froze at the desktop image (no folders or dock appeared. I restarted the computer many times but the finder never opens and all I see is the desktop wallpaper. I donnected usb drives and put in dvds but the finder never appears so I cn do nothing but shut down and start up.
I ran Disk Utility but it found no problems with the disk. I do not have a backup of the important file forlders on my drive and due to low disk space I am worried to reinstall and archive the OS since there may not be enough disk space to archive (only about 220 mb free on the apple side when I am in windows using bootcamp).
Does anyone know what happeded to my machine? Is there such low disk space that finder had an issue? I have started on such low memory before.
What does Archive actually do when reinstalling OS X? Does it make a copy of the HD files and folders or does it simply reinstall the operating system piece by piece while protecting the files and folders that I wish to save?
Thanks for all your help and sorry for the length of the writing (I wanted you to understand all before replying).Solved
By chance I got itunes to pop up (running hands over keys blindly) and with it the apple menu icon so I had access to my recently used items and so I could delete images from iphoto and thus bring the free disk space up above zero and then the dock/folders and finder came back....I have just backed up my important files......feeling better now
Any advice on how to more quickly handle this type of issue next time?
Thanks. -

Hi there,
Listing my issues below,
Since yesterday,
1. I couldn't open my Finder (the color ball is always rotating)
2. I witness slightly excess heating than usual on the top left corner of the laptop
3. My desktop files are all missing
4. I couldn't access any file even when I use Spotlight (it won't respond to open any file selected)
5. Safari and other browsers work
6. I have Parallel Desktop with Windows and I can access files which are available in Windows
I sincerely appreciate your contribution to sort this problem at the earliest.
Many thanks,
Kart.Dear Mr. Linc,
1. I don't have backup of my files
2. I couldn't see or open finder to see all my documents to copy and backup them

Hi,
I am getting the following error in Crystal reports:
Failed to open a rowset
Details: HY000: [DataDirect][ODBC Oracle Driver][Oracle]ORA-06550: line 1, column 8:
PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'RUN-REPORT'
ORA-06550: line 1, column 8:
PL/SQL: Statement ignored
This is happens anytime I want to edit something in a report: I have tried to reinstalled crystal and the oracle client, but it did not work. Also checked the ODBC settings. Someelse tried to run the reports on their crystal and they did not come across any problem. We both run the same version of Crystal reports.
Can you please help as it is preventing me from doing anything in Crystal?
thanksDeepa,
I've run into the same deadlock error. It usually happens to me when I'm running reports that are particularly intensive in terms of server memory and / or processing, such as correlated sub-queries or looping statements involving big tables. It will also happen when there is heavy usage from the from end application, by front line users.
I'm no DBA, but I get the impression that SQL Server is smart enough prioritize requests. Basically, it deadlocked the report request in order to keep other processes up and running.
My solution... Wait for "off peak" times to run these types of reports. Also I publish my reports to CR Server and schedule them to run at night.
Hope that helps,
Jason
PS If you do find a way to avoid this error without compromising front end application performance please post it. I hate, it makes me nuts too. -
Access Denied - Failed to Open Document
I've done a few hours of searching for a solution to my problem with no specific answer helping me.
I recently upgraded 63 various reports from Crystal Reports version 8.5 to Crystal Reports 2011 (using a Windows 7 box). I realigned all of the report fields, and ensured all the variables within the report worked as they did before. Basically all 63 worked like old. I deployed these reports to a Windows 2012 R2 server which has Crystal Reports 2011 installed (as well as Crystal Report Runtime for .Net Framework) and 4 out of 63 no longer work. When I try to open them with Crystal Reports 2011 it gives me an error 'Access Denied [line break] Failed to Open Document' In the Event Viewer for Windows it gives me the following details as to what happened.
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: crw32.exe
Application Version: 14.0.4.738
Application Timestamp: 4fd6ccca
Fault Module Name: crw32.exe

Here are the things I've done to try and troubleshoot/resolve it:
Re-upgrade the original CR 8.5 Report to 2011 and migrate it to server. (Didn't work)
Migrate the original CR 8.5 Report to Windows 2012 Server and try to upgrade it there (Same error on 8.5 report)
Repair/Reinstall Crystal Reports 2011 on Windows 2012 Server via Windows Control Panel->Uninstall Program tool (Didn't Work)
Repair/Reinstall Crystal Reports Runtime for .Net Framework on Windows 2012 Server via Windows Control Panel->Uninstall Program tool (Didn't Work)
Add three System Environment Variables to enable Crystal Reports Error Logging through CRLogger.dll (LOGGING_DIR = C:\CRLOGGING; LOGGING_ENABLED_ASSERT = 1; LOGGING_ENABLED_RUNTIME = 30)
Now..the error logging gives me error numbers, and which line of which .cpp file is encountering a problem, but that really doesn't help me because I don't have access to Crystal Reports Source Code. (Pasted below for those who are really curious).
I've seen Ludek or other SAP staff shut down discussions with some line about 'Report Development is not a ...' but I feel that this isn't related to how the report was developed and instead something in the application not jiving well with something else.
Any help or suggestions would be incredibly well received and appreciated.

1Hi Thomas,
Statistically speaking, 4 out of 63 reports isn't bad for a migration. So something in these 4 reports is different from the others. I've had this happen if there are images or an object inserted into the report and the update doesn't know how to handle that object.
The best way to try and find the problem is by process of elimination. Open the reports again in 8.5 and remove a couple of things at a time. Save it then open in 2011 and see if it fails or not. Continue doing that until the report actually opens. The problem could be anything from a formula or printer settings to attachments.
Good luck,

Crystal Server 2011 "Failed to open the connection" with 32 & 64 bit drivers are loaded
Brand new installation of Crystal Reports Server 2011 with CR Developer 2011 as well. Downloaded new Postgres and MySQL drivers for both the 32 and 64 bit ODBC definitions. Created a new report on the server to eliminate any migration driver incompatibility issues. Reports run fine in Developer but give the same "Failed to open the connection."
and still problems running the reports If I Save Data with the reports, I can click View to see the data, but they will not refresh.
All the articles I'm finding online seem to point to the issue with needing 32 & 64 bit drivers, but I've loaded both and built my ODBC connections with the 32 drivers in the SysWOW64 folder.
Logged in as Administrator. Any thoughts out there? Are there some new security measures?
Thanks in advance ...Yes, Designer and CRS are on the same machine.
Good catch with the 5.1 driver. I loaded up the mysql-connector-odbc-5.1.13-win32 driver and used that. It alone failed when I made the ODBC connection with it. I see on the CRS 2011 Feature Pack 3 .pdf file that it says "Only 64-bit database connector middleware is supported" ... I downloaded the other mysql-connector-odbc-5.1.13-winx64 64bit file, but teh .msi and .zip versions failed on the load. Do I need that if it says that or should the first one be enough?
I've been trying to use a normal User DSN, no? Apparently I don't have access as a machine Administrator to do it as I get "You are logged on with non-Administrative privileges. System DSNs could not be created or modified." Having our server guys get that straightened out and we'll see. Had not heard of that actually but will give it a go.
You say I should create the DSN entries in the 64 bit version of the ODBC Data Source Administrator ... located in the system32 folder, not the SysWOW64 folder, where the 32 bit drivers are found, yes? Isn't that the "wrong" location to use I've been reading? Or are System DSNs different from a User DSN?
BIG thanks for the replies. I owe you beers!!!!! -

Edit Reply
I am receiving a similar error.
Failed to open the connection.
Details: 08004:OracleODBCOraORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified Database Vendor Code: 12154
I've seen all sorts of discussion on the intertubes about possible fixes however, none stated are practical or they do not address my error specifically. I've exhausted resources on the net as well as those available to me.
I'm currently running SAP Crystal Reports 2011 on WIN7 64bit and using Oracle in OraClient 10g_home1.
Please let me know what insight you have. I cannot roll back to previous versions of Windows nor less encryption.
Thank you for your time.

CR2008:Failed to open the connection. Failed to open the connection. Report
Hi,
I've just upgraded from Crystal XI R2 to Crystal 2008. All my reports open happily in Crystal 2008. I have also deployed the Crystal 2008 runtime to a Windows 2003 SP2 R2 server running ASP.NET 1 and ASP.NET 2. Before the Crystal 2008 runtime was installed on top of the already present Crystal XI R2 Runtime I could view RPT files via the .NET report viewer (version XI). Now that Crystal 2008 runtime is installed I receive an error message when I try to view the reports, again, via the .NET report viewer (version 12), although no code has changed apart from all references changed from XI to 2008.
Code is:
CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument oReportDocument = new CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument();
oReportDocument.Load(sReportFilename);
Tables oTables = oReportDocument.Database.Tables;
foreach (CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.Table oTable in oTables)
TableLogOnInfo crTableLogOnInfo = oTable.LogOnInfo;
crTableLogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo.IntegratedSecurity = true;
crTableLogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo.DatabaseName = "DB" ;
crTableLogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo.ServerName = "server" ;
oTable.ApplyLogOnInfo(crTableLogOnInfo);
CrystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = oReportDocument;
this.DataBind();
Error message is: 'Failed to open the connection. Failed to open the connection'.
Any help would be great.
Regards
TonyYou are correct in that there are no database connectivity changes in CR 2008.
If you do not have SP0 for CR 2008, download it from here:
https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100007528552008E/cr2008_sp0.zip
If that does not help, I'd like to check if the correct dlls are loading when using CR 2008. To do that, download the modules utility from here:
https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006252802008E/modules.zip
Then do the following:
1) unzip the download
2) Run the app with the CR 2008 references
3) get the error. leave the error on the screen
4) Start modules
5) Go to the File menu, select New List -> Memory Modules
6) Expand "By process"
7) Find the app exe (or the .NET dev env)
8) Click on that
9) Go to the View menu and select Details
10) Look to see if there are any dlls loading form the CR XI r2 directory (c:\Program files\Business Objects\Common\3.5\bin)

Failed to open the connection error using Business View OLE DB
I have a Crystal Report built on a Business View with the db being accessed by an OLE driver. Everything works fine using Crystal Designer, but when I try to access it through BOE I get the "Failed to open the connection" error. I have the ole drivers installed on the server.
We are on BOE 12.1.0.
The db is IBM as400.
Suggestions??Ok so I spent the day trying to find the differences between the working and the non-working application. I began by adding code one piece at a time to the working application. The goal was to try and get it to break on the deployment server. I found the lines of code that is causing the break on the deployment server. Here it is:
private void setReportParameters()
try
crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(0, reportUserName.Value);
crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(1, reportArea.Value);
crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(2, reportCDR.SelectedValue);
crystalReportDocument.SetParameterValue(3, reportStatus.Value);
catch (Exception ex)
throw ex;
This sub-routine is called from my button click code and is used to set the parameters for the report. Once I added this to the working application it broke also. My goal here is to send the parameters to the report from a form the user is filling out. Please keep in mind this code works in Visual Studio 2005 and my local IIS server running on my development machine. It breaks on the target deployment server
The code broke on reports with sub-reports as well as report with no sub-reports. As soon as it was added and deployed the application through the "Failed to open the connection" error.

That might be your problem - the report is expecting to find the odbc conector it has been assigned and can't so it fails. Not knowing the version you're using, I suggest you defined an odbc driver on the development machine the same as the one on the server (or vice versa depending on which is less distruptive). Make sure your report is using that connection and republish it. It should work fine.
Just in case you're not sure how, in XI you change the odbc connection by right-clicking on the 'Database fields' section within Field Explorer, Create new connection and then re-assign each table in the top window to the new odbc connection in the bottom window. -
Failed to open the connection - database vendor code 17
I'm upgrading a VB.net Windows Forms application from 1.1 to 4.0. In the reporting form, the list of reports you can choose are pulled from a folder where the .rpt files reside. Once the user chooses a report and executes it, vb code populates the current database connection information and displays the report in the report viewer control.
The following things are true:
- Version 1.1 works on my systems and my customers systems
- The code has not been changed, except that it now targets .Net 4.0 instead of 1.1
- The exact same .rpt files are being used
- Version 4.0 connects to the same database my customer is using, and I can run the reports just fine from here.
- Version 4.0 is able to connect to the database just fine from my customers systems (using the same connection information provided to the report)
- My customer installed this: http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_redist_install_32bit_13_0_2.zip
The only problem is that my customer encounters this error when trying to run any report from his systems:
Failed to open the connection.
Details: Database Vendor Code: 17
Failed to open the connection.
Orders.BOL.TaskDetail {393C9017-0ED1-4E1E-8824-E222F4B9D14C}.rpt
Details: Database Vendor Code: 17
I read all of the articles I could find, and they either don't describe this exact situation, or there is insufficient information for troubleshooting this issue. Are there steps that I've missed to make Crystal Reports for VS2010 work on my customer's systems?
Your help is appreciated,
MarkHi Mark,
More information required -
- Does this happen with all reports or few?
- What is the connection type used for the report to connect to the database (OLEDB,ODBC etc)
- Are you changing the database at runtime?
few things you could check
- Check if the database is accaessible from the client machine with proper permissions / rights.
- If its an ODBC connection check if the DSN with same name is created on the client machine.
- Check the driver / provided used by the report to connect to the DB, verify that the same is installed on the client machine. (SQL NAtive client, SQL Server etc)
Also take a look at below articles discussing the simillar issue.

Failed to open the connection. Details: [Database Vendor Code: 53 ]
I'm upgrading one of our applications from Visual Studio 2005 to 2010. In the process I'm also switching our reports to run using Stored Procedures instead of Tables/Views. Everything runs fine on development machines after all the migration work. On the server however, it does not work. And I am getting the error message ""
Server is Windows 2003 Server 32 bit. And yes, I have installed the latest runtimes version 13.0.2000.0 on the server. There have been no other changes on the server other than to switch the target framework on the website in question from .net 2 to .net 4, and then to modify the web.config file to remove references to the older Crystal Reports and replace with references to the newer version.
I've seen many other threads on this "failed to open the connection" errors but none of them are my problem except there is one post that remains unanswered where someone had the same Database Vendor Code 53. I don't know what that error means, spent a considerable amount of time researching that before asking this question.
Lastly, it appears that this error only happens when the report is pulling data from a Stored Procedure rather than Tables/Views. If I re-copy the previous reports, they still work.
The ODBC drivers haven't changed, nor should they. They are fully up to date on that server machine.
I can't think of anything else that would be indicative of anything other than this is a bug. Here is the error text as it shows up in the event log:

Database Vendor Code 53 is an error code that the CR engine simply passes straight from the database it's self. E.g.; look at your database error code and you should be able to find a verbose description of the error.
As a test, what happens if you add the report to your project and run it in the CR design part of the .NET IDE?
- A quick google search of Error 53 (for MS SQL - an assumption) comes up with a number of good hits. E.g.;
