Finder files/drives rearrange themselves on restart

Hi all-
how do I keep this from happening? I'd like to keep my finder files and drives in the same place when I restart but they keep rearranging on restart.
thanks, Lisa

If you mean the icons that you'd like to see down the right-hand side of your computer's Desktop, the first thing you should do is to assure that no other files are crowding those, either from below or from the left. Try leaving plenty of space and see if it helps. BTW, you should be able to test any progress by logging out and back in again, rather than requiring a complete restart.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link

You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.

  • WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization?

WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files and/or documents in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization? Even after I numbered the documents/folders to keep them in my preferred order, it will still displace them occasionally. This is becoming increasingly frustrating!
Is this a "Pages" issue or "FInder"? The vast majority of documents I use are in Pages, but there are also Numbers, PDFs, jpegs and a few other applications involved. This never happened before I upgraded to Mountain Lion; in Tiger, the documents (mostly Appleworks) and files stayed where I wanted them to be.
I am visually oriented, and prefer to arrange items in a folder in an order that makes them easier for me to access, which is often NOT alphabetical.
Can anyone suggest a solution? Please??
    Thank you.
    Sara

    nbar,
    Thank you for your reply.
However, I do not understand what you mean by "user account." I am the only user, and can find no options for "user" or "guest." The parental controls have always been off, as there are no other people who have access to my computer.
    Frank,
    Thank you for your reply.
All my documents, files and folders are in icon view, Arranged By: none in both view and view options. This arbitrary rearranging does not happen all the time, only when I make a substantial change to one of the documents in the file or folder. I'm not sure what you mean by "column heading."
    MichaelLAX,
    Thank you for your reply.
I know, to my sorrow, that Appleworks does not work with Mountain Lion. I spent at least three months converting approximately 2,000 Appleworks documents to Pages, Numbers, Bento (for databases) and Touchdraw (for drawings). So this is not the problem; but as I said, I did not have this rearranging problem with Appleworks - the icons stayed where I wanted them to be. I still miss the ease and reliability of Appleworks, darn it!
    Frank,
Thank you for your second reply.
I do have the Sort By: in view options as well as in view set to "none."   The finder still insists on rearranging, but only when I have made a substantial change to a document in that file or folder.
    Any futher thoughts?
    xdab,
    Thank you for your reply.
"Are you are using icon view, but for some reason the finder moves files around? is that the problem?"
YES!! This is exactly the problem.
"If this operation is successful then erase the original and rename the new one to the name originally chosen by the user."
This seems like a lot of trouble, especially as I often work on several documents at the same time.
"By the way, the finder has a "clean up by" menu that rearranges icons in one of the standard orders, there are shortcuts that produce the same effect, for example <option><cmd>1 sorts them by name. Is it possible that this shortcut was typed by mistake without you noticing?"
I do know about this "clean up by" option, and avoid it like the plague! So I doubt this is the issue, and I infrequently use keyboard shortcuts like this anyway.
Thanks all who replied. None of the suggestions seem to work, however. Any others out there?

    Sara

  • Finder file size on external drive

When I do Finder->File->Get Info, I get total size of contents of current folder in the window.
But when I do the same thing on an external drive, I do not.
Is there a way to make that info show up?
    Thanks.

I went to the Iphoto Library file in Finder, selected it, then moved the file to my external hard disk drive, which has a 500GB capacity.  So, even though I called this "backing up" maybe it was "copying" - but I do not understand the difference.
A backup is a copy on a different device - so copying to an external device is a backup - UNTIL you start using that copy as your library - then it is the library and you have no backup  --  and note that if you do not have a backup you are 100% guarenteed to lose all of yoru photos sooner or later - computers, software and people fail and when they do a current backup is the only thing that will save your photos and other files
Finally, I re-opened Iphoto, and when it asked me to select a Library, I chose the library file that I had copied onto my external hard drive.  All of my photos then re-loaded into Iphoto, and I have been looking and them and selecting some for deletion.
So when you did this you started using the iPhoto library in the EHD and everything you do is reflected there
I believe I understand what you've said - that changes I make (whether deleting, renaming, cropping, etc.) to photos in this file are being made directly onto the external hard disk drive.
    Yes
So, to be absolutely specific, when I delete a photo in Iphoto to the TRASH CAN and then EMPTY the trash can, this photo is now and forever GONE from the external hard disk drive.
    Maybe
To delete from iPhoto when using a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state)  drag a photo from an event to the iPhoto trash (or select it and press delete) and then empty the iPhoto trash and with iPhoto '11 under Lion empty the system trash - then the photo is gone forever from the external hard drive
And edits I make to photos are SAVED to the external hard disk drive.  IS THAT CORRECT?
    Yes

  • Files rearrange themselves

How can I stop individual files in my folders from rearranging themselve for no reason?

Open the Folder and then select Show View Options, in that menu set Arrange by and Sort by to the way you want to see them then close the panel.

  • Find files by drive or folder?

    Hi,
I have used PSE7 on XP for a while and now I have a new Windows 7 box which I am trying out PSE8 on.
My setup is that all my catalogs and media is on a separate hard drive (D:) so I have just moved the disk and am using that catalog. However since then I have realised that a few hundred (out of ~12000) pictures never got moved to the media disk and are left dotted round in various places on the old C: drive. So I want to go through on the XP box and find any files that are not on the media drive and move them to it before transferring it back to the new computer.
So, essentially my problem boils down this. How can I find files by folder or path name? I have found several different ways of searching by filename but this seems to be confined to the actual name of the file and not include the path. I have several candidate directories I want to check, and essentially anything in the catalog that is on drive C: (or in one of several candidate folders) needs to be moved but I cannot for the life of me find any way of doing this. There are many essentially useless things you can search for but I cannot believe that one of the most useful methods is really missing. I have tried on PSE8 and PSE7 with the same result.
I would be very grateful if someone could point me at how to crack this, it has already taken up several hours of searching.
    Regards
    Philip Coombes

In PEv.8, at top right, Display>folder location.
I just installed PEv.8 a few days ago, and now want to populate the organizer with the picture files which are in folders on the C drive. When I go to the folder view, point to C drive, the folders don't show up for me. I am using WINDOWS 7.

  • Spotlight not finding files on my Hard Drive - permissions issue?

I found that Spotlight in Mountain Lion was often not finding files when searching for words within the file (searching file names seemed to be OK).
I found various threads suggesting that it may be a problem with File Permissions. I use Dropbox and was concerned it may have messed up permissions after a relinking a while ago.
I tried to reset permissions from within Dropbox (under Settings, as suggested by some), but no help.
Finally I found this EXCELLENT TIP to reset permissions from within the Repair Utility (in Mountain Lion), Not the Disk Utility, which I had not been aware of:https://discussions.apple.com/message/20421138#20421138
It took a little while and then Spotlight re-indexed all my files. SO FAR it seems to be working well.
    THANK YOU!!

    Might try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Finder file info again stopped showing

    iMac 7,1; Mac OSX 10.6.8
My user preferences have become modified/corrupted at least twice recently, and I'm wondering what is the cause.
Back on 5 March 2015 I posted that finder had stopped showing file info Finder stopped showing file info, and when I followed the advice given by a responder (to back up, locate Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, remove to desktop, then restart) the problem was resolved. A couple of days ago, however, some com.apple.stuff was in my trash inside a Recovered Files folder. I emptied trash, thinking that the preferences would regenerate themselves. But yesterday I detected that Finder again was not showing file info, and this time, the fix didn't work. I ended up using Time Machine to restore the entire Preferences folder in my Library to a few days back. Restarted the machine. Then ran repair permissions. Restarted again. For now, Finder does show file info as it ought. But why does this happen? The iMac has been running very slowly also. Disk capacity is 61.84GB available out of 319.73GB, so shouldn't be a memory issue. Help?

Thank you, seventy one, for your reply. Here you go:

  • Xfce desktop items rearrange themselves between reboots

Hello, I am a new Arch Linux user and this is my first thread. Please pardon any possible mistakes I made on this post.
Almost every time Xfce starts the desktop icons are rearranged. After searching the wiki, I found this:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xf … themselves
So after deleting the said files, I restarted Xfce. The problem was not gone.
Then I noticed that it was more complicated: I think it's not the desktop item positions that are changing, but the desktop's margins.
Not all icons are rearranged; only those on the right and the bottom sides of the desktop, the last collumns and rows.
In /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1350x728.rc these files' positions change back to row=0 col=0 and cannot be placed back to their original location.
The next time I restart Xfce the inaccesible spaces on the desktop are ok once again, and I place the items there. Then the problem repeats itself.
Is there any configuration file I should have manually edited?
I'm using Xfce, xfwm with compositing enabled, and no conky or any other desktop decorations.
    inxi -G output:
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GF106 [GeForce GTS 450]
Display Server: X.Org 1.15.1 driver: nvidia
    Resolution: [email protected]
    GLX Renderer: GeForce GTS 450/PCIe/SSE2
    GLX Version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 304.121
EDIT: This might be actually caused by removing USB flash drives while the computer is shut down. The mentioned file is not changed, ergo a mess is caused when it's read on startup. I can't confirm this, though.
EDIT #2: No, it happened again, and I had not removed any usb flash drives.

Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.

  • Can't find home drive after reinstallation of O.S.X

    Dear friends,
I have one ibook G4 and a Macbook Pro. Two days ago, the ibook G4 failed to start up, I tried in safe mode then pass through. Then I run Onyx-automation followed by restart, after that neither my desktop nor the sidebar of the finder window show the home drive icons,( I partitioned the internal hard disk into two drives). But when I run Disk utility and found both are there correctly, including the files and capacity, usage etc. it tested both drives "appears OK". Yesterday, I tried to reinstall O.S.X Tiger 10.4 without removing previous system via a firewire to my Macbook Pro which installed with Leopard( the disc drive of my ibookG4 corrupted last year).
finally, the hard drives are still invisible, I did tick the display options for hard disks from the preference panel of Finder. To the worse, the same problem happened to my Macbook Pro after I restarted it.
It seems a simply software issue, physically the hard disks are ok through the disk verify and permission verify.
    Headache! Please advise ASAP.
    thank you,

what happens when you enter commandshiftc in finder? that should show all the drives. if it doesn't, maybe the drive has acquired the hidden flag. run the following command in terminal
    sudo chflags 0 /
you'll have to enter your admin password which you won't see as you type it. that's normal. see if the drive shows up.

these permissions look fine. sorry, i don't know what the problem is or why the drive would not show in finder. does it happen on all accounts? make a new one and check from there.

    hi, V.K.
after running the two commands, suddenly, The Macintosh HD icon showed up at both desktop and sidebar in finder, but the other drive (I partition into two parts) still not showing. Then I open Onyx and tick the "unhidden those hidden files", I found that drive. So I conclude it was hidden by sth. But I don't know how to unhidden it, the icon always in grey.
    Can you please instruct again.
    thank you.

aha, so it was a hidden flag after all. then run
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
you may need to restart after that to make the second drive show up.

sorry, I haven't dealt with Tiger in such a long time I don't remember if it respects chflags. ask on Tiger forums.

I don't have a source attribute for this (maybe I wrote it myself!):
There are visibility toggling instructions at [this web site|http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html] using Terminal or Applescript.
If you don't like Applescript or Terminal there is an application called [JuhOS X|http://www.saunalahti.fi/~juhruo/juhosx> that lets you toggle visibility on individual items. It does not have the most intuitive interface but your drive should appear on the first page. Check it really is invisible, then click on the drive and toggle visibility. Effects will not take place until you restart your finder, so the easiest thing to do then will be to restart your computer.

  • Spotlight and finder cannot find files as of a certain date. What can be the problem and how to solve?

Spotlight and search field in Outlook on MacBoon cannot find files as of a certain date. What can be the problem and how to solve?

    Reinstall on both.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
Restore your iPhone to reinstall iOS. Be sure to do this while connected to your computer and iTunes.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings.

  • My Finder / User preferences never saved after Restart. Help!

After a "successful" back-up from Time Machine (thanks, Time Machine), my files seem to all be here, but my Finder and basic Application preferences have never been the same since.
My MacBook Pro 17" hard drive crashed. I had an authorized Apple repair replace it with a new drive. I restored my set-up via Time Machine as instructed and was happy to see I was (mostly) back in good shape.
What HASN'T been the same since - when I RESTART:
    - Whenever I shut down/restart, my desktop will always revert back to the last "mode" pre-crash. For example, one same folder is always open, as it happened to be the folder opened during the crash. Now, no matter what I seem to have opened on my desktop before I shut down, that other "old" folder always greets me after a restart.
    - Many applications I notice do not "remember" the last settings changed/used, always reverting to the "pre-crash" setting. Notable examples:
    - iChat settings (buddy icon, status, etc.) must ALWAYS be manually adjusted when I open iChat now.
    - iTunes and iPhoto are a big drag to open, because I must always "find" my libraries. They have long been moved to an external drive, but these iApps always ask me to locate them or create new ones. Even if I attempt to change my preferences.
    - Dock: the settings/icons revert back to the "pre-crash" version, and since I have updated many Apps, several icons show the Question Mark symbol, as some old Apps are long gone.
I tried Disk Utility, repairing permissions. It recognized many inconsistencies and problems,
but the repairs never seem to "stick."
Again, this happens each time I restart/reboot.
So if I only put my MacBook to sleep mode, it does fine when it wakes up,
and remembers desktop settings, iChat settings, etc.
Therefore, I only rarely shut down now, to avoid my Groundhog's Day syndrome.
This is annoying. Help Me. Someone. Please.

Apparently the previous preferences were copied over by TM.
First it would probably be a good idea to start up from the install disk and run Disk Utilities’ Repair Disk. If you don’t know how to do that, reply back for specific directions.
Because it appears to be preference files that cause the problem, you can begin removing them from the Preferences folder. These .plist files can be moved to the Desktop and the system will recreate new ones in the Preferences folder. If removing the .plist file doesn’t help, the one on the desktop can be moved back into the Preferences folder to replace the newly created one.
Locate the Preference folder by this path:
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
(where “yourusername” is the short name of your computer, like hawaii - the folder looks like a house/home)
Often users confuse the above path with Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences. That is not the one needed. The correct one is the Preference folder in the Users home folder.
The same folder appearing after restarting is related to the Finder, so move the file named com.apple.finder.plist to the Desktop and restart. If that helps preventing the same folder appearing, you will need to reset all your Finder preferences. If not, you can return the old .plist file from the Desktop back to the Preferences folder and will need to look for another solution.
Each of the above has its own .plist file(s) in the above named Preferences folder.
It’s probably best to quit the applications before removing the preferences. Try moving the main .plist files, i.e., com.apple.iChat.plist to the desktop and restart iChat. If it doesn’t help, remove the other .plist files related to iChat. They will be replaced by the system. Some newly created .plist files don’t function until after a restart (like the Finder one described above). I don’t think iChat, iTunes, etc., require a restart, but it couldn’t hurt. If this helped with iChat, do the same procedure for iTunes, Dock, and any others giving you problems.
If these do not help, you may need to consider an Archive & Install.
I tried Disk Utility, repairing permissions. It recognized many inconsistencies and problems,
but the repairs never seem to "stick."
As long as the permissions inconsistencies include “Permissions differ,” SUID or ACL warnings, you can probably safely ignore them. But there is a .plist file for DiskUtility as well, which you may want to replace by moving it to the Desktop and restarting. If at the end of Repair Permissions it says “Permission Repair Complete,” it’s probably okay.
Help Me. Someone. Please.
Here’s hoping for an UNGroundhog’s Day.

  • Safari 5 Top Sites Rearranging Themselves after Quitting

    Hello, all.
The thread title sort of says it all. Since upgrading to 10.6.4 and/or Safari 5, my Top Sites will rearrange themselves every time I restart Safari. Specifically, two sites are removed from Top Sites and I have to manually add them again.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on fixing it?

    Greetings,
    Have you tried this:
Quit Safari if it's running and open System Preferences>Network>TCP/IP.
In the DNS Server window, make sure IPv6 is turned off, and enter these two DNS servers to replace the ones you currently have:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
click Apply Now and quit System Preferences.
Next, do these things in order:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites feature, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then repair permissions and restart Safari and see if the problem remains.

  • System cannot find file specified during install officejet 6500

I started my HP solution center software today to do some scanning over my wireless connection.  I received a message box indicating I needed to reinstall the original software that came with my OfficeJet 6500 wireless 709n printer.  when I started the software it recieved the message 'system cannot find file specified'.  No information was given on what file it was looking for.  I then downloaded the software from the HP site (OJ_AIO_6500_E709_Full_Win_WW_140_408.exe) and encountered the same result.  I hookup up my printer via USB and it appeared to go looking for driver updates.  After that the HP solution center software would run but would only connect to my printer if the USB was connected.  Still cannot run the printer software set.
I recently upgraded my windows 8 64-bit to window 8.1.  It worked before that.  This is not the only software that was broken by the process.  Any help on how I can re-establish my wireless connection to my Officejet 6500 would be appreciated.
I also tried the Microsoft 'Fixit' solutions but they are not available for windows 8.1 :-)...

    Hello All,
Try using the scrubber built into the CD or download.
    From original CD installation:
    1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer.
    2. Open  "Computer", and then right click on the CD drive and choose open.
    3. Open folder Util
    4. Open folder CCC
    5. Run the L3uninstall.exe (near the bottom of the list).
    6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
    7. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
    8. Restart the computer.
    9. Download and run the HP Printer Install Wizard.
    10. When it comes to the screen asking to accept the terms, don't yet. There will be a few options near the top of the Window. I need you to choose "Connection settings" or "Internet connection usage settings" (It will be something similar to what I just stated). It will give you the options to turn off automatic updates, I will need you to change all of these options to "Off" / "No".
    11. Once they're set to "Off" / "No", continue with the installation like you did before.
If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:
    1. Type %temp% in the run field
    2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
Also, make sure all of the Windows Updates have been completed.
Let me know if this works.
    Thank you,
I worked on behalf of HP.

  • Icons rearrange themselves!

    Hi,
In my applications folder, I keep it in the icon view mode, and I arrange them with all Apple programs on the left side, and all my sharewares, etc. on the right side. This has worked well for a few years . . . when all of a sudden, in Snow Leopard, every few hours, as I look in the Applications folder - OMG! they've all rearranged themselves alphabetically ??
I'll spend 10 minutes rearranging them back to how I like them - they'll stay that way for a day? or an hour, it changes, and then when I look in the Applications folder again - they did it again! Rearranged themselves!!
    Anyone know what's going on?
All maintenence things are done on my computer - latest in upgrades, etc!
    Thanks,
    Larry

But, just asking, do you know if I did your idea and deleted the main plist - would that have effected ALL my folders, which I suspect it would?
Normally when you delete a plist file associated with any application, that application will usually behave as if it's never been used that that particular user before.
There are some exceptions. For example, you can create a custom background image for each folder. Those choices are stored with the folder, not the plist file. This is why when you download applications such as Firefox and open the installer, you see a Finder folder that has a background with icon placements and background "art" (in the case of Firefox the "art" is really a diagram trying to illustrate to the user that they should drag the application icon to their "Applications" folder) even though you have never opened the folder before.
Since there's no hard rule as to what is stored in an application's "plist" file, you can never be sure what will happen when you get rid of the old plist file. This is why I generally don't just delete the file. I typically either drag to desktop or drag to trash (but don't empty trash). That way if the removal had any undesired side-effects I can always drag the original plist file back.
    Glad to hear it's fixed!
