Finder Files/Folder arrangements: Help Needed!

Hi,
I'm relatively new to Mac and I would like to know how you can set Finder to automatically view all files / folders in order of name? without having to change the view of each individual folder
Any help would be appreciated!

I think I can answer your question. I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and encountered a similar problem. I think I've found a solution.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I noticed that when I used "Icon View" in Finder (which is how I've always used Finder), the icons were completely scrambled and were dispersed randomly all over the window, like a deck of cards strewn on the floor. Some icons were even overlapping other icons. The solution I finally found was to open a finder window, then navigate to any folder in my user account, then right click in a blank area inside the window, then select "Show View Options" from the dropdown menu. This brings up a small preferences pane. Then go to the "Arrange By" dropdown menu in the pane. Then select "Name" from that menu. Then click on the "Use as Defaults" button at the bottom of the pane. Then close the pane. That seemed to work for finder windows. For the Desktop, I got the same results by right-clicking on an empty space on the Desktop and following the same procedure, except that you won't need to click the "Use as Defaults" button at the bottom of the preferences pane for the Desktop, because there is no such button. These simple steps seemed to do the trick. If you have multiple user accounts on your Mac, you may need to repeat these steps for each user account.
Incidentally, I should mention that before I discovered this solution I called AppleCare support and they told me the only thing I could do was to navigate to each individual folder on my Mac and right-click inside the Finder window for that folder and select "Arrange by Name". The guy who was helping me talked to someone above him in the AppleCare hierarchy who said exactly the same thing. Both of these people said that there was no way to universally change the Finder settings for icon arrangement. They said I had to do it folder-by-folder, for all the thousands of folders on my Mac. I was ready to revert to Leopard, but decided to experiment for a few minutes to see whether I could find a solution. That's how I came up with the solution outlined above.

  • Can't find Playlists folder to help me stream with Subsonic.

    HI there. 
    I’m runnun iTunes 11 on OS 10.8.4.
    I’ve used iTunes constantly for many years and do tons of library organization, have made hundreds of playlists, have a massive library with relatively few problems (in recent years at least) and use home sharing to stream to Apple TV, controlled with iPhone and iPad. 
    I want to use Subsonic for long distance streaming, and setting it up to find the music files was no problem, they are on an external drive, the the rest should be on my main drive.   But I’ll be dang - diddley - anged if i can find the folder containing my playlists.
    Subsonic’s default suggested path is /Users/Shared/Playlists.   (Shouldn’t it say iTunes in there somewhere?)  My Users/Shared folder has folders for other app’s like Adobe, but nothing for iTunes or Playlists.
    Under my own Username there is Music, and iTunes within that, but here’s where it gets weird and messy. The only folder with a promising name within, iTunes Playlists, contains only about a dozen xml files of specific playlists I exported to use with a label maker, and co-responding folder called Playlist Acoustica Labels, with a handful of similarly named files.
    Searching in Finder, the only folders with Playlists in the name are within the location: Username/Music/beaTunes/   Besides a few that were obviously custom named by me within BeaTunes,  there is one called iTunes Library (biglong#insidebrackets), and another simply called Playlists.   This final folder has a copy of what looks something like my libraries playlists, but from 2 years ago, when I last even tried to really use BeaTunes; the playlist .m3u8 files are all dated as last modified in 2011, with folders and playlists I’ve since deleted, and nothing new created since then.  (The only files that are updated for this morning are de-highlted .DS_Store files, whatever the heck those are.)   
    By the way, the reason I stopped trying to use BeaTunes was it never worked for me, not once.  After taking like, seriously, hours to load my library, I had it generate a custom list based on a sample track, and it produced other tracks from the same album.  That was $40 or however much well spent.  Anyone with a  huge library ever have any luck with it?  What a waste. 
    Anyway, those are seriously the only folders I can find anywhere called Playlists.   I’ve been surfing Apple Support Pages and various forums for answers, and nothing is clearing anything up.  (Of course there is the red herring hits from people referring to the Playlist Folders *inside iTunes you create to group actual playlists,*  but nothing else than similar dead ends regarding system folders with playlist files. 
    Some of the typically mystifying Apple genius/whatever pages seem to be directing me towards a file within iTunes Media called iTunes Music Library.xml (and with Backup in the name just before .xml, and some other variations of old versions of the same.   The doc’s and some posters seem to indicate that these contain all the iTunes metadata.  I tried directing Subsonic to this file, and to the folder containing it, but nothing ever changes; Subsonic’s Home Screen always shows all my artists, but nothing under Playlists. 
    I saw something about another file called iTunes Libary.itl as a companion to .xml, and I tried that one too nothing.  The iTunes Media > iTunes file I’ve found much of this in DID, by the way, have what looked like all of the apps that I’ve bought, probably all my iPhone Voice Notes, and a group of E-music mp3’s I downloaded when my external drive hook up was not working, redirecting my library to the Main HD before I switched it back and copied all those files to the correct music location..  So the evidence say this iTunes location is running the  media on the external drive, and can’t find anything for iTunes on the external except for the music files.
    I’m just stumped.  I wish there was a way to right click a playlist name, like you can a song in iTunes, and select “Show file in Finder.”  But I tried it, right clicking does nothing.  So I’m out of ideas. 
    Oh yeah, I also have an app running that makes invisible files visible.  That didn’t help either.  Man I’m just out of ideas here.  Something so simple, but then I’ve seen Mac complicate simple things before with no warning or disregard, so I’m hoping someone knows something to help me find where these things live.  This thing has devoured my Sunday morning.

    Dear Brian:
    Create a Play List in iTunes.
    Control-Click and open "Export" in the highlighted Playlist in iTunes.
    With "Export" opened:
    1. Click on "Format" and choose "M3U";
    2. In "Save As" name your "WhatEverNamePlaylist.m3u"; and
    3. In "Where" tell the program where to send your "WhatEverNamePlaylist.m3u".
    You are done creating the Playlist.m3u in iTunes.
    Open "Subsonic Web Page".
    Left hand column open "Import playlist".
    In "Import playlist" click "Choose File" and open the "WhatEverNamePlaylist.m3u"; you created in iTunes.
    The "WhatEverNamePlaylist.m3u" should now occupy the space between "Choose File" and "OK".
    Click "OK".
    The file should now be in the "Playlist" on the left.

    To search in a case sensitive manner, if you're using an Oracle database I know you can set a variable in config.cfg -- DatabasePreserveCase. This may also work for other databases, but I am not sure.
    The available fields to filter on are all the metadata fields, whether they be UCM metadata fields or custom metadata fields.
    The query is doing a database query so you need to use the name of the column name in the database -- custom variables start with x and ucm variables start with d.
    I'm not an expert on UCM, but have been working on an implementation. I didn't really find a comprehensive guide for CIS, just used the examples from the sample code, the javadocs, some forum posts, and trial and error.

  • Workflow approval of a bunch of documents at folder level : help needed

    As part of the PoC work , I require to create a workflow around some 300+ documents (which are in a single folder and checked in to the ocntent server )
    and once a single document is reviewd and Approved , I need to approve all the Documents in that folder automatically / using criteria workflow

    The most obvious problem is your use of:
    set itemPath to file path of addedItems
    By definition, addedItems is a list of items dropped into the folder. Sure, the user might have only dropped one item, but all that means is you have a list containing one item.
    As a result, you can't get 'file path' of a list (not that 'file path' is a valid property, anyway, but the same applies.
    Instead you should look for something more along the lines of (untested):
    on adding folder items to thisFolder after receiving addedItems
      -- iterate through the added items
      repeat with eachItem in addedItems
        set filePath to eachItem as text -- this coerces the file to a text string of its path
        set {oldDelims, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, ":"}
        -- now build the new path:
        set newPath to ("Other Disk" & text items 2 through -1 of (text items of filePath)) as text
        tell application "Finder"
          duplicate eachItem to (newPath as alias)
        end tell
        set my text item delimiters to oldDelims
      end repeat
    end adding folder items to
    You may have problems, though, if the target disk doesn't have the same directory structure, so some error checking is probably in order.

  • PSE 7 confusion about folder location, help needed

    Here's some background: I'm using PhotoShop Elements 7 on Win XP.  I have an external firewire hard drive I use for overflow/backups.  Originally, this showed up as a K: drive on my system.
    I added a RAID controller and two more drives to stripe as a single drive for temp space rendering movies.  This ended up as a K: drive and the external moved to L:  However, when I did this there were some pictures from my catalog that I had on the external drive.  I have used File > reconnect missing files to handle the moves, but PSE is still confused (very).
    PSE has started to mix up the RAID (K:) and external (L:) content.  If I move a set of pictures (e.g. a folder of them) onto the external drive (L:) via drag and drop in the folder location view, the folder will show up empty on the L: heirarchy, but will show up as a gray folder icon in the K: RAID drive hierarchy.  If I open up windows explorer, the RAID drive will appear empty.  In other cases (I'm not sure when/how yet), pictures physically end up on the RAID drive itself instead of the external.  I have uninstalled both the external drive and the RAID drive and reinstalled them both, but they are still getting confused in the folder view by PSE.  I've also tried moving content outside of PSE and just reconnecting missing files, but it still wants to put things under the K: RAID drive instead of the external L:.
    I've searched everywhere I can think of for a description of what gray folder icons in the folder location view means and can find none.  I'm not sure how to convince PSE that there's nothing on the RAID K: drive and it shouldn't try to connect the two.  Any suggestions?

    Thank you!  I ran psedbtool and the output shows the catalog has the wrong drive letter for the L: drive.
    Is there a way to make PSE forget about the K: and L: drives that it is so confused about so that it can relearn of their existence?  If I use the drive letter reassignment to fix PSE, it will break other apps that are now dependent on the current drive letter assignments.  I've tried removing all files from the L: drive, but it's still remembered as part of the catalog.

  • File folder arrangement

    Is there a way that I can customize the files arrangement in a folder by Kind and then by Alphabet ?

    I may be misunderstanding the question, but that is how "Sort by Kind" works in "list" and "icon" view - "Kind" is used as the primary sort criterion, and items are sorted by "name" within each "kind" grouping.
    Use "Finder" > "View" > "Show View Options" (⌘J) and make sure the "Show columns" > "Kind" ("list view") or the "Keep arranged by" > "Kind" ("icon view" and the "Desktop") options are selected. In list view, once the "kind" column is visible, click on the "Kind" column heading to sort by that criterion.
    Unfortunately, "column" view only allows sorting by "name".

    Hi, I have an .MPG file that I am trying to open in Gamebreaker software. I just can't get it to work. I can open it in VLC but I need to add a timeline stopwatch to the video so need to use gamebreaker or some other application that has a timeline facility within it.

  • Change in file/folder arrangement of data disks?

    I periodically burn data DVDs of new additions to my iTunes library as a backup. I make a playlist of the music, then sort by album and burn as data disks.
    Previously, the DVD was arranged like this:
    01 First Album Name
    ..01 First Song Name
    ..02 Second Song Name etc
    02 Second Album Name
    ..01 First Song Name
    ..02 Second Song Name etc
    50 Fiftieth Album Name
    ..01 First Song Name
    ..02 Second Song Name etc
    Today I upgraded to iTunes 7.5 (from 7.4.2) and burn a disk and get:
    01 First Song Name (part of First Album)
    02 Second Song Name (part of First Album)
    03 First Song Name (part of Second Album)
    04 Second Song Name (part of Second Album)
    304 First Song Name (part of Fiftieth Album)
    305 Second Song Name (part of Fiftieth Album)
    Just a big list of files with no folder organization or album names. This makes a mess of the text files I keep for reference and the disks themselves IMO.

    Ooh! This is an even crazier bug than I initially thought.
    I tried putting in the pattern manually like so:
                <xs:pattern value="(0|1|2|3|4|5|6|7|8|9|10|11|12)"/>
    What I discovered is that it's not the transition from single digits to double digits that's confusing DW, it's the fact that when it evaluates 11, it has already evaluated 1. For example, if I change this to:
                <xs:pattern value="(0|10|11|12)"/>
    Then all my 10s, 11s, and 12s pass through just fine.
    However, if I tweak that to:
                <xs:pattern value="(0|1|10|11|12)"/>
    Now, my 10s and 11s and 12s trigger errors.
    For some reason, having the 0 in there does not trigger an error on the 10s in that first example.
    Bizarre, eh?

  • File Compression Questions/Help Needed

    Question, I have just completed an audio presentation project (audio book on CD) for a client (681 mgs) which I now need to have replicated 1500 times over. The problem is my outsourced replicator will only press cd's up to 650 mgs. Therefore, I need to figure out how to compress the presentation just slightly (as to not lose tone quality) to get in onto the disc. (The CD Rom will be played in the car or computer Cd players)
    I used the Soundtrack 1.2 to complete the project and also have Quicktime pro, however, I'm not sure what to do and how to change the settings to get the compression correct.

    Is it something you can simply save as an .aif file, then import it into iTunes and then compress it to mp3 at, say, 256 Kbps? That's pretty good... but if you're looking for better... perhaps an mp2? Not easy to find an mpeg1 layer 2 compression utility, but I use Sound Converter:

  • JAR file updating project config file error. Help needed!

    I got a problem when I want to use an existed jar file. There is a method called setConfig which can read and update the properties inside a property file which will be located inside the deployed jar file. But when the other project want to use this jar file. It causes the following error:
    Property 'configfile' threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: URI is not hierarchical
    The code might cause this error is like:

    I have all of e.printStackTrack( ) in my try - catch block. But i also think the blank screen appears because the class can not find my resources. Maybe it's my fault, because i create by hand a folder name "res" in project folder, then put all my resource in this folder. And in Eclipse when i try to get these resource, i wrote something like this:

  • File control question -help needed

    hi all the experts
    when using a file control, how can i change a file extension on the run after
    writing data to a file which was specified in control property? can this file
    be modified by other process when it is being written by the process that initializes
    the control, other words, is it being locked to prevent other process to access
    it while it is being created and written? thanks and looking forward to ur help.

  • Airdrop receives file on iPad but then can't find file anywhere. Help please?

    Hi,
    Any help on this would be hugely appreciated.
    Have been trying repeatedly to send a video file from an iPhone 5s to the latest iPad using Airdrop.
    Everything works: devices are recognised, file is sent all the way to the 'tick' symbol appearing on the iPad and the iPhone says the file is sent.
    BUT
    Then nothing happens, no file opens, and I can't find it in any albums (photos, videos or otherwise) on the recipient iPad.
    I haven't come across this on the forums yet so I'm hoping someone from Apple can help.

    By and large, we aren't Apple here, just other users trying to help each other. The few actual employees, who are here mostly to keep the forums working smoothly, only rarely offer help, mostly from canned help documents.
    A file transferred by AirDrop should wind up in the same app that sent it. For example, if you sent a video using the Photos app, it will wind up in the Photos app, specifically in the Camera Roll. I just verified that it works that way from my iPhone5 to my iPad Air (both on 7.0.6).
    If that's not how it is working for you, please tell us the app you are using to send the video, the iOS level on each of the two devices, and anything else you think might help somebody here assist you. (It might well not be me.)

    How to solve this issue to display the filename as uploaded.

    file download dialog.
    ~kansI understood that, but my thought was that the HTTP headers content type containing a charset of UTF-8 might help. I don't know for sure, but otherwise, I don't know how to get the browser to otherwise not assume ASCII.

  • Problem with Multi File upload example, help needed

    Just 2 things in my test:
    1) I use no accept attribute. Coldfusion is then free to upload any extenstion.
    Restricting the type to application/octet-stream may generate errors. Also, it is unnecessary, because we perform a type check anyway.
    2) I have used #ExpandPath('.')#\ in place of #ExpandPath('\')#

  • ITunes corrupt file message - urgent help needed please

    I have an iPod video 30GB, i downloded the latest iTunes & Quicktime version, and updated my iPod also to the latest update. When i connect my iPod and start downloading music from the library in iTunes, the iPod keeps on disconnecting and restarting by itself, and i get a message that the file iTunes.exe is corrupt. I tried Apple support and did all what they said by downloading the latest updates and versions, and also did the Chkdsk utility on Windows, but still it did not work, the iPod keep on restarting and i cannot download anything on it, i had it now for a week and did not use it at all because of this problem, can somebody with a technical background help me please, i use Windows XP.
