Finder Font Problem

Suddenly, the Finder is having trouble with its characters. The Finder headings and Menus and the file names all have an "a" or "at" sign with a box around them for the characters. One unique thing is that if you click on a file name to edit the name text, the correct text returns until you finish editing it.
THe operating system also seems to be growing unstable with programs crashing regularly.
It seems as though some font got corrupted somewhere. Is this a VIRUS? A disk problem? Anybody got an idea? Can I restore the fonts only or do I need to reload the operating system?
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi, macjack and hi again, bmewolf —
I must've fallen into a rabbit hole while editing my post. Please forgive. Here's a revised version that, luckily, supplements macjack's suggestion — which I think would be a good 1st step:
Font-related issues can cause seemingly mysterious user-account or system-wide problems.
Please take a look at Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue — which summarizes a viable approach to troubleshooting many issues like this.
I also suggest that you read Dr. Smoke's "Undoing Font Book" FAQ to familiarize yourself with details about the probable context of your situation and ways to resolve it.
Summarizing ——»»
(1) Any recent changes? Have you recently installed or removed any fonts? Do you have a particularly large collection? use 3rd-party software to manage your fonts?
(2) Font Book. Is the behavior restricted to the Finder? I'm not familiar with the specific symptoms — so I can't say for sure, but...
Have you tried using Font Book?
Font Book is a utility can often solve such misbehavior — it's located in /Applications/. As is usually wise, read through Font Book Help before proceeding. In simple terms,
  (a) Launch Font Book, then look in the column titled "Fonts." Any font/family denoted with a "•" beside it is duplicated — which may cause unexpected problems. Select one of these, then go to
Edit »» Resolve duplicates. Continue until they've all been resolved.
Check to see if this helps.
  (b) If not, you may also want to use the File »» Validate font function.
(3) Safe Mode. If that didn't help — and check carefully after a restart — please see the KnowledgeBase Articles What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? and Starting up in Safe Mode. As you'll see from the former, booting into Safe Mode has some aspects that are unique in OS X 10.4.x Tiger — it will:
    • "Disable all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts
    • Move to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ "
— in addition to the other troubleshooting steps described. Using a Safe Boot may thus be a helpful troubleshooting step for you situation.
If none of the suggestions help, please post back to discuss what you've tried and observed.
HTH!
Regards,
Dean

  • Glitches in address fill-ins with nicknames; default font problem; plus other glitches in Thunderbird 31.3.0 and 31.4.0; can I roll back to an earlier version?

I am unhappy with the recent upgrade to Thunderbird 31.3.0 and now 31.4.0. My bottom line question is whether I can roll back to the previous version, which was working well for me.
The problems I have encountered include:
    1. I used to be able to enter a single letter in many cases in the address field, and the autocomplete would fill in the entry that I always use with that single letter. That function has been lost, as has auto fill-in based on the nicknames I have entered in my Address Book. I see there is another thread on this problem (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1036962), but no satisfactory answer so far. Entering a single letter now pulls up completely unrelated address entries that may not even have that letter as part of the name, address or nickname for that unrelated address. I have created new nicknames to try to adapt to this problem, but even these new nicknames no longer work with the 31.4.0 upgrade yesterday, forcing me to create yet more complex and hard-to-remember nicknames to pull up my frequent addressees. This is all very frustrating to me, as I depend on speed and ease when creating messages.
    2. Also, I used to be able to enter a single letter in the address field and then use the mouse to click on the "To:" symbol to the left of the next address line to change the next entry to "Cc:"; doing so would then cause the complete address to fill in in the "To:" address field, and make the next field ready for an entry. That no longer works. If I use that technique, the shortcut that I entered in the first field gets included along with the address (if I'm lucky enough to have the address itself selected now, given the problems I've mentioned above). I now have to press "Enter" in order to get the address in the first field to "take" correctly, and then have to click on the "To:" symbol for the next line as a separate action. Just another inconvenience with the new version.
    3. While still on the subject of addresses, personally I see no reason why the address and subject fields should now be colored blue by default rather than appearing as blank, white fields. I far prefer the old look. And I suspect that changing from the blue color to a nice, clean, white field takes time and computer resources that slow things down.
    4. The default font (Times in my case) no longer "takes" when replying to or forwarding messages. I've checked Tools/Options/Composition, and Times is still shown as my default font. However, when I start to type (in a reply with the original message quoted or in a forwarded message), the result is "Variable Width". In order to get Times, I need to highlight the block of text after typing, including the lead-in to the quoted message or the header of the forwarded message, and select "Times" when "(mixed)" shows up. This is a big pain; I often forget to do so and end up having to edit the Unsent Message (which I check before sending) as New and correct the font.
    5. A minor problem: I rely on the reminder to attach a message which shows up when an "attachment-related" word is entered in the body of the message. It has been a wonderful feature of Thunderbird that has prevented me on many occasions from sending off messages without the attachments. However, in the new versions, even if I have indeed added the attachment, a pop-up comes up on sending the message saying there has been no attachment and asking if I want to add one. It's easy enough to just click "No", but it's yet one more unnecessary and distracting step that this new version is requiring of the user.
I'm really sad to see these various changes/glitches. I love Thunderbird and it bothers me deeply to find myself mired in so many new problems that slow down my work. I would be grateful for any suggestions and advice, and, particularly, for any information as whether I can roll back to the version prior to 31.3.0 that was working well for me.

Thank you, Zenos. I tried rolling back to v31.2.0, since I had not encountered problems prior to December. However, that didn't help. So I followed your valuable suggestion to revert to v24.6; that seems to have done the trick.
I would like to mark this problem as "Solved" -- the rollback seems to have worked. However, since my original post was a complex mix of things, before I do that, should I post the individual problem sets that I had noted (address fields/nicknames problems -- numbers 1-3; default font problem -- number 4; attachment reminder problem -- number 5) as separate issues which have not been solved?
Do you know if these various issues are being worked on? I'm glad to have the temporary fix of rolling back to an earlier version, but I'd like to get back on the current update schedule at some point if and when these problems have been corrected.
    Thank you again!

  • How do I fix a FINDER crash problem in 10.6.8

I recently, in the last 10 days, started having a FINDER crash problem with my iMac 24" (iMac9,1) Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz computer.
I have 4 GB of ram installed, no external hard disks installed.
It seems to crash when I have five or more applications open, but it is not consistant.
When it freezes or crashes, I get the spinning ball. I open the Force Quit Window with comand, option, escape and it show Finder not responding.
I click on Finder and tell it to relaunch. It does nothing. At that point I cannot even go to the APPLE icon on the dock and do a shutdown or restart.
From that point on, I have to press and hold the START button to shut the computer down.
I have checked the hard disk integrity with Disk Utility after starting on the Snow Leopard 1.6 install disk. everything shows good.
I have repaired permissions using the same application. I then restart the computer and log back in.
I have used Onyx for Snow Leopard version 2.3.1 to do some maintenance routines.
I have checked the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive and it passes.
I have verified that the Daily, Weekly, Monthly routines have been run. They have.

  • Has anyone experienced text going missing after using Change All in the Find Font dialogue box?

I manage an artwork production studio and two members of staff have separately reported that when using the Change All command to substitute fonts in InDesign's Find Font dialogue box, some text disappears from their documents. All affected text is originally set in the same font, and most of the conversion is fine but a few instances of text are actually removed (not reflowed). In the latest reported case, only four or five instances of text were 'deleted' across two pages of a 20pp document.
I've found a link that refers to the same issue but it's unresolved (http://www.listsearch.com/InDesign/Thread/index.lasso?20041#last)
I haven't been able to replicate this behaviour but would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced it and if so, under what circumstances it can occur, and what work-rounds or fixes are available.
Applies to InDesign CS3 and CS4, have not tested with CS5 because we haven't upgraded yet.

Joel, I am having the same problem you described. I have read of similar posts on PrintPlanet.com. Someone there thought it was a different text engine or something in CS4 which may be causing the problem.
I don't know what causes this but I believe it can be traced to a previously created file in CS3 is saved as a CS4 document.
The fonts associated with this problem for me are always Gill Sans, Palatino and some form of Helvetica. There may be others but these are the ones we notice the most.
Today I worked on an InDesign CS4 file. When I opened it I was given a missing font warning. I went to Find Font and it was different typefaces of Gill Sans that was missing. When I changed the missing font to Gill Sans Regular entire lines of text disappeared. I closed the document without saving it and reopened it. I did the same thing in replacing fonts. This time no text disappeared. Not reflowed; not white; not hidden—gone.
This is what I have been seeing for the past few months. The disappearing text is random and cannot be duplicated, though fonts may disappear in some other place. You never know where text will just disappear.
The workaround I have found is to export your file to an INX document and reopen it in CS3. You have to replace all missing text before saving it as INX, though. To my knowledge CS3 has never had this happen.
The workaround, though it works for me, is annoying. I'd like to know what to do to resolve this issue. What's the use in having CS4 if you can't trust it completely.
I use a Mac running 10.6.3. I also have running Suitcase Fusion 2.

  • CS3 Find Font/Delete Paragraph Style/Redefine Paragraph Style Causes Crash

I am running into a very frustrating issue where I cannot replace a paragraph style. The issue is that we used to use some adobe type fonts and want to move to the true type equivalent so that we don't have problems working on files between mac and pc. The problem occurs on both mac and pc on a variety of hardware (both c86 and ppc macs for example). When we open the document it identifies that the font cannot be found (example Palatino T1). When we click find font and select the regular ttf Palatino replacement and click Change All Indesign just vanishes and leaves a crash message with a ton of garbage and a read only memory error. The same happens if we change the font on some text and right click on aragraph style and click "redefine style" - there is a sudden crash.
Trying to work around this I went into our templates and tried to change it there. Opening the paragraph style and selecting the new font caused it to crash upon selecting OK. Also trying to Make a new paragraph style works, but then when deleting the old one causes a crash no matter what combination of mapping or not mapping the old paragraph style we chose (we tried every option under the dialogue and selected several different styles to map to or none at all).
This occurs on several different fonts and on several different templates. I have tried deleting the adobe font cache to no avail. Any help resolving this would be great - all our employees are going nuts over this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Peter, your latest post led me to an interesting revelation. When I change Palatino (t1) bold to Palatino Bold using Find/Change it is fine. When I change Palatino (t1) to any font using Find/Change there is a curious result! As soon as I click find first the page changes to the default template and all content is hidden. The 4 or 5 places where palatino occurs on the default template change fine, but then on the next click of FIND FIRST it crashes! So the problem is connected to "find first", not the actual change. My guess is this is an issue of with how the find/change jumps from the template to the individual page, but I'm not sure exactly what is happening.

  • Font problem in Classic

I posted this over in the Classic forum...but it's rather dead over there and I fear it may not be seen for a while...so here's the problem...
I'm running Quark 4 in Classic and having trouble with fonts. Though the fonts are on my computer, and in the OS 9 fonts folder, they won't print correctly. If I use the same printer and print from Quark on my old iMac (running OS 9) the fonts print and look fine.
I read another thread in this forum that mentioned the fonts must be OS 9 fonts (and must not have been run through suitcase or a similar managing program???). So, on the off chance that my husband or I just took OS X fonts and copied into the OS 9 folder, I copied the OS 9 fonts from the iMac (I just grabbed everything in the Frutiger family, as it was one that I had an issue with) and then dumped them into the OS 9 fonts folder on my iBook. I restarted Classic mode in order to make the fonts available to the OS and then printed again. The font still prints all pixeled-looking.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Do I need to find the original font disc and install them from the disc?
Any help would be most appreciated!!!!!

    Hi Diane,
Glad that the tip helped to "solve" the font problem!
Not sure why you are printing the file info at the bottom of the page. It does sound as if it is a print setting somewhere though. Hopefully someone has a clue for you.
Again, thanks for the "solved" star and if I can think of something else for you to try I'll post back. Let us know if you figure it out.
    good luck,

    edit:
"In lieu of an answer...I tried changing the paper size to legal and it's not on the last copy I printed."
Ooops, I misread your reply, and see that by changing the paper size it corrected the issue.

  • Font Problems with Safari

I've been trying to fix this font problem I'm haveing. I go someplace like ebay and most of the fonts are fine but some fonts are not the ones I want. And when I go to the perfences nothing happens. Then I go to the font book and I can't find the font. I tryied to reset Safari and stills the same problem.
Macbook Pro, Intel Imac, PowerMac Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and the support article linked below for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode* (by holding down the shift key at the startup chime) to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Font Problem: Zebra label print

    Hi,
I'm designing label print with Zebra Z4MPlus, I can rotate the text in 90 degree, but the problem is the printed font is so ugly and letters are twisted together, I take the font 'HELVE', it should be all right, how can I solve it?!
    Any suggestion will be appreicated!

I've try to find font HELVE in zebra web site to upload in Z4MPlus printer, but I couldn't find ? how can I?

  • CS3: Find Font window on open, no missing fonts.

Is there a way to tell Illustrator not to show the Find Font window when tere are no missing fonts? It's only a whole lot frustrating and annoying.
I'm sure the fonts are activated in Suitcase Fusion (only just slightly less crappy a an option than no font manager at all). Even if they're not and are auto-activated, the problem occurs with three nearly identical files. If fonts were activated opening the first file, then the next two should be fine. If I then close the files then reopen I get the Find Font window again, so auto-activation has nothing to do with it.

My solution has always been to hit cancel and just re-open the file(s) I think Illy looks, sees missing fonts, kicks up the warning, then talks to your font manager, so that the warning will come up even though the font manager is working on it...
Is there a setting in Suitcase that keeps fonts open through a whole session (like until you quit suitcase) rather than closing them when you close the file (as it sounds like is happening for you) I haven't used suitcase since X1 or the one before that, but I seem to remember that closing the offending file and reopening it would work...
edit: on re-reading your post, is there the possibility of conflicting fonts, as in ps and tt versions of the same font? One may be activated, but it may be looking for the other.

  • How to uninstall Snow Leopard? major font problems in iWork, iLife

All iWork and iLife apps have shocking font problems... so much so that I need to uninstall Snow Leopard and wait for Apple to sort it out. Does anyone know the best way? And how is it possible that these problems are occurring with Apple's inhouse software? Other stuff seems to be working OK so far for the most part. For a bit more detail on my problems, including sample images:
    http://bit.ly/309G0o

Snow lizard cost me $27.000.00 in unusable fonts. We installed snow lizards (what I'm calling it now) and lost 934 fonts. Say 40 were bad fonts and 896 were type 1 postscript. When I explained to the tech person how big this was to the print community, he had no clue. - I'm still waiting to hear back. I have a case number but now I read from another post they knew Snow Lizard would do this. At 30.00 per font that is almost $27,000 to replace what they thought wasn't important. But in the print world of design this is huge. Every layout and ad that needs an update - which take a few minutes is a whole rework. They have no clue what business a mac computer is in or they don't see us as important.
I did find if I load those fonts or the font missing into the InDesign font folder I can get the old ad to make it to pdf. But photoshop and illustrator, I'm screwed. And if I didn't outline the type in illustrator - it's gone. I asked the tech guy if I can go back, and undo this slimy lizard and he said probably not if we do backups. We do backups every hour - this is the print business. I feel forsaken. I've been with apple for so many years.

  • New user with strange font problem

I created a user account for my girlfriend...when she brought up the safari the google homepage had a strange grafiti font for all the text. (I say strange, but it's one of my many fonts in the collection) I opened up firefox and had the same problem...this morning I realized it was doing it in mail as well. Under my account (the admin and original account) there isn't an issue, but I've looked all over and can't find a setting to fix it for her account.
It's driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    15" Titanium Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

..."I say strange, but it's one of my many fonts in the collection"...
Since it sounds like you know the name of the font, you could try to see if anything turns up with the command below, which searches through user preferences for a given string:<pre>defaults find "font name"</pre>A partial font name should be fine. Enter the command using "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app".
Also, the caches (associated with a user by the 'uid') don't appear to be cleared when an account is deleted. So if a new user is created and gets assigned a previously used 'uid', they may inherit the old cache files. For starters, try clearing out any file or folder whose name contains the user's 'uid', such as the "/Library/Caches/com.apple.IntlDataCache.###" file or the "/Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/###" folder belonging to the affected user. Then log out and back in. To determine the user's 'uid', try:<pre>id -u username</pre>

  • CS5 crashes when checking fonts (Find Font) in document from CS3

A number of files and templates imported from CS3 work fine in CS5, but I have multiple multiple files which crash everytime the find font button is pressed followed by "find first".
Some of these files are a very simple template that contains few text lines and place holders.
Has any one else experienced similar problems?

I believe I have found a solution AND a possible cause of the problem of font searching causing CS5 to crash with the windows message "Indesign has stopped working".
The problem occurs when opening a CS3 file, even a very simple one and appears to be caused by CS3 listing fonts that are not actually used in the file. eg the default font.
I have found a solution that has worked so far for all my problem files...
    Solution:
Open the CS3 file in CS5
IMMEDIATELY export this file using the Indesign markup format (.IDML)
Open the IDML file and the spurious fonts have disappeared AND the file can now be edited without crashing.
    Hope that this assists others,
    Ian

  • Flash Font Problems

I'm using Flash CS4 and have wasted--over the course of the past 18 months--at least three days of work time trying, in vain, to make Flash fonts work completely consistently.
Problems: 1) Fonts don't appear after FontAgent activation (must copy to Adobe/Fonts folder), 2) Bits of styled type totally disappear on compile (haven't figured this one out and try to avoid certain faces), 3) and most recently, totally bizarre font display (looks like egg thrown against the wall), which, despite verifying the fonts, replacing them (even though they checked out fine), cleaning the font caches (with Font Finagler, nee Font Cache Cleaner), doing a million restarts and praying, are still screwed up.
One possible common thread is that these seems to be OpenType fonts. But the errors are totally inconsistent -- for example, the font with #3 above had worked fine for nearly a year before becoming hopelessly destroyed in the past five hours, and only *some* characters in #2 disappear.
I'm posting here mostly out of frustration, since previous posts on similar issues haven't yielded decent (working) solutions and Googling these problems (ad nauseam) mostly shows people using either different font managers (or none at all) or working with dynamic text. (Mine is static text.)
But perhaps someone has a definitive resource/recipe for troubleshooting and solving these font problems?
Or perhaps someone could shed some light on why Adobe uses separate font folders and caches?

OK, well! It seems that I'm **not** crazy. I just read in TidBITS today that what I saw last week was related to a bug in Mac OS X 10.6.7, which apparently fixed some font security problems, but broke something having to do with OpenType fonts. I guess I made the mistake of being on the bleeding edge.
    http://db.tidbits.com/article/12078
I stick by my general complaint, however. Adobe or some good member of the community should create a definitive resource for understanding and solving font problems in Flash. I've spent a lot of time looking for answers to my questions in Adobe help docs, in questions posted on these forums, and Googling for solutions -- and have seen many, many others expressing my same frustration of wasted time and so-so answers. Since fonts are critical to pretty much every Flash project, this should be information that is **easy** to find.

  • Fireworks 8 on OS X font problems and Solutions

    Hi All
I had a problem with my Fireworks 8 and being able to switch
fonts. The list would scroll very slowly and sooner or later crash
Fireworks. If I tried to open an PSD file with text in it I would
crash not only my Fireworks program but the entire computer as
well. For the most part I have resolved this problem and have to
give a big thumbs up for a free program called "Font Nuke". You can
Google for it and I am in no way affiliated with this program or
it's agents in any way. Just a Fireworks user desperate for a fix.
After running this program to clean my font caches and rebooting my
Fireworks now works almost perfectly including opening Photoshop
CS2 PSD files containing text. The only font problem I have not
cured by this quick fix is for some reason one font "Brush Script
MT" will not work. It also does not give a preview of this font.
The font does work in other programs including photoshop. I have
ran all the tests in "Font Book" on it and nothing seems to be
wrong with the font Brush Script MT.
My platform is OS X 10.49 on G5 MAC with 1.5 Gb ram. I hope
this might be of use to others having font problems here, but also
hoping someone might have an idea of why the one font does not work
    with Fireworks 8.
    Dave

    Tazmun,
Have you tried a search within Fireworks 8' Techdocs through
    Fireworks Support site?
If still problem, let us know. We can try and give you a tip
or suggestion to find some solution for you.
If I remember this correctly, not all of fonts are equally
installed into Font folder on your Mac. There are a couple of
Library folders on your System folder, plus users' Library folder
and sometimes inside software developer's application folders. It
varies from software developers to others. I don't recall that I
run into font problems with Fireworks or any other Adobe
applications on my Mac. let me take a look at Brush Script MT on my
    Fireworks and see what happens.
