Finder freeze in Column View

Since recent updates, Finder freezes with the spinning beach ball when selecting items in column view. It can takes a few minutes each time before I can progress.
I checked for answer here, but found nothing.
I have repaired disc errors, restarted, relaunched Finder, repaired permissions etc - but the problem is still there.
Any ideas or solutions?

If you haven't worked this out yet, sounds like you're having the same exact issue I was, solved here:

  • Finder freezes in Column View when connected to 10.8 Server

This is an unusual problem I can't seem to nail down. When browsing files in column view on an Apple server the Finder will sometimes freeze and lockup with a beachball. I can't relaunch the fnder. Restarting is the only fix. It doen't happen everytime I'm in column view but it only happens when I'm browsing files on our network shares in column view. Two other users in the office with the same OS don't experience this issue. It's only happening to my Mac. Reveiwing the console logs from these instences doesn't show any consistent entries except  coreaudiod[156]: Disabled automatic stack shots because audio IO is active  I've understood this to be an issue with iTunes so don't think it's related to this problem.
Here's what I've done to date without any success in ending this issue.
    Deleted the finder prefs
Connected to the server with WiFi rather than ethernet
Created a new user account and worked in that account
    Reinstalled the operating system
    2012 27" iMac running 10.8.5
2013 Mac Mini server running 10.8.5
Gigabit network through Apple Extreme Basestation
Below are the 4 sections of the All Messages console logs from times of the freeze. Each entry leads with the exact time I noticed the freeze.
If anyone could share similar experiences with this behavior or share their interpretation of the logs I would be very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Freeze during column view in finder and open file box?

Whenever I open a file and the open file dialog box is in column view it freezes when I click on the file and the view shifts to reveal the icon and info. It happens a lot in finder too, but not as often. It usually doesn't start happening for a few minutes after I reboot.
I'm pretty sure quicktime is associated with that icon/image preview. I just formatted my hard drive hoping that would help but it doesn't. I have to force quit applications alot if I forget to get out of column view...someone please help!
I don't remember this happening before I installed macromedia studio 8, but I'm not sure. I have to use those programs.

  • Making finder open in column view?

I really like the OS X Finder's "Column View". Unfortunately, Finder windows always seem to open in icon view, even though I've checked the "Open New Windows in Column View" option in Finder preferences. Any idea why this option might not be working (on a brand-new installation with the latest software update installed)?

Hi, Mike, this below is from the Helpviewer: Click screen bring up finder go to Help on Menu Bar , Helpviewer> Click Index "Mac Help Index" click 'f" all about Finder.
"To always use column view when you open a Finder window, choose Finder > Preferences and click General. Select "Open new windows in column view."
If you choose icon or list view, the Finder saves your view settings. The next time you open the window you will see the same view settings you chose previously.
You can also customize the items that appear in the toolbar of Finder windows, or you can change the overall look of windows."
    Hope this helps.

  • Finder crashes in Column View mode

    Hello all-
I'm having a problem with my Mac that is getting very, very annoying and I'm hoping somebody can help me out...
As I navigate from File to file in Column view mode, the Finder will often stop responding (relaunch becomes option in Dock) and I'll see the spinning beach ball for over a minute before Finder becomes available again.
It appears like it is having problems generating the file info for the preview window. I've even turned off the Preview option in the last column, but to no effect. I refuse to believe that my machine is so incapable of simply showing me my files. This happens regardless of the number of applications and windows I have open.
Can anybody suggest anything? I recently did a full reinstall of Tiger and the service updates. Hard to think that something would be wrong with the OS already.
Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.
    -Chip

Actually Onyx appears only "reset" the Spotlight index, it doesn't force it to reindex or anything else that I'm aware of.
I read up a bit more on Spotlight and tried to trash the index and associated files, hoping that it would reindex and all would be fine. However apon reboot it kicked back into it's old routine of cycling and eating up 99% of one of the CPUs.
I decided to finally just disable the spotlight feature completely using the DisableTigerFeatures program.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18182
Although I'm disappointed that I can't use Spotlight anymore (never used it much to begin with though) I can happy report that both my CPUs are mine again, my software and games are running snappier, my firewire hdd, iPod, and secondary SATA HDD not unmount and vertify just fine.
Sad that for months and months I basically allowed my G5 Dual Processsor to be crippled by a buggy (in my estimation) piece of software. Finally I feel like my computer is safe to work on and I'm enjoying it for the first time in quite awhile.
Thanks again Francine, had you not pointed my in the right direction I'd still be running a single processor machine that crashed all the time

  • Finder problem in column view with Pages

When saving a document the Finder view comes up BUT most of the top part of the view is up off the screen. Because I cannot access the Toolbar I cannot move it back down only resize it from the bottom which doen't move the top down. Help please !!!!

Eureka! I think I found it. The Finder window of which I speak is there because I gave Pages an instruction to Save a document. The Finder window can thus be moved by moving the Pages document being saved, by its Toolbar. The Finder window moves in sync with the Pages document.

  • Re: Finder windows in Column View

I can't seem to attach a file at Google Chrome, the Finder Window is too tall and unable to click 'Save', 'Cancel', etc. I had to pick a document/photo to exit the window.

Is anyone having this trouble too?
I noticed this delay when I first moved to Leopard. Side-by-side with a much slower machine running Tiger, the delay was extremely noticeable.
Now it is just as quick as Tiger. Sadly I don't know what has caused the delay to go away. FWIW, my initial Leopard instal was an Upgrade. I have since done an Erase & Instal: a bit drastic, and I'm not even sure this was the cause. I think the situation had improved before the 10.5.1 update.
The most plausible reason is that it occurred after the weekly maintenance script was first run on the new installation. You might like to try this, it can do no harm:
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window followed by a return:
    sudo periodic weekly
Press return and you will be prompted for your password. This is not echoed for security reasons, so you won't see anything as you type: just type it and press return.
If you haven't used 'sudo' before, you will receive a little lecture before being prompted for the password. Read it and continue. It will take a couple of minutes to complete—you'll know it is finished when your shell prompt reappears.
I would be very interested to know if this helps, because, as I said, I suffered this slowness initially. It would be good to know what made it go away.

  • Finder column view

After installing Archicad 10, I seem to have lost the ability to have the Finder window for my Macintosh HD open in column view on a regular basis. I keep setting it to column view, and have fiddled with Finder preferences, but it keeps reverting to opening in Icon view after a while (for example, after restarting).
Other folders in the Finder open in column view just fine; it's the view of my startup disk that won't behave.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Michael,
I'm not familiar with the software, so I don't know about its compatibility. However, I would have a look at Scott Radloff's User Tip.

  • Can't right-click in column view anymore within finder

I've been using macs for ages and this is something I have always done, for some reason recently I have not been able to right-click on files or folders in finder when in column view. If I switch to list to icon view, even cover flow, it works fine. I can also right-click items on desktop and several other places. This is frustrating for me because column view is my preferred method of navigating in finder and it's constantly interupting my workflow recently, not sure if its a bug or a setting but I've been driving myself crazy trying to find a solution.
Any idea what this could be?

  • How to stop finder auto slide when click subfolder in columns view

    Hi
when i use finder in the columns view and click something in the next level at right, the finder will slide right and relocate with the subfolder. how can i stop it.

You can't. It has to slide over to display the contents of the selected folder or the preview info.
As long as there is room in the window, nothing will shift.
You can always use List view if you don't want it to move.

  • Can't get folders to stay in column view... pulling hair out!!!

It doesn't matter what finder view options I set, they work for 1 or 2 times opening a finder window in column view, then goes back to the icon view. I hate icon view!!! What is the ridiculous deal with this and how can something so chump-change, penny-ante as keeping a simple folder view preference be so ridiculous as to migrate from one version of OSX to the next!?!?? At least there was an app in 10.4 that was in Utilities that you could log in as root, reset the windows the way you wanted and then log back out. Ridiculous that you had to do that kludge, but it worked... but I can't find that application anymore in Leopard... arghhh! Wow, I feel a bit better to have vented Can anyone help me fix this so I can always have Column view as the default... and possible save my sanity in the process?

Does this KBase article still apply?
Mac OS X: How to Save a Finder View (Column, Icon, or List) for a Specific Folder or Disk
It appears the Finder only keeps the desired setting if set on a newly opened window. If the folder was navigated to within the window and the setting is changed, that setting is temporary. So you need to (temporarily) set the Finder to open folders in a new window (Finder Preferences) so any window you navigate to is a new window, a "starting point". Then you can actually save that folder's setting. Note you can leave the "Show View Options" window open as you change between windows and it relates to the active window. Once all your desired folders are set, you can uncheck to open folders in new windows.
I usually navigate in column view and of course clicking through folders in column view is not the same as opening a new window so I had to create aliases of some folders to test with but this worked for me.
(hmm, further testing, they seem to keep for me even when set by navigating to it within a window.... but this might be worth a try)

  • Finder freezes (spinning beach ball) for minutes when in column view

Just in the last weeks, I get the spinning beach ball when I try to select an item in the column view. Doesnt happen with a folder, which just opens up another pane.
The beach ball continues for a couple of minutes, then it stops and the item is viewable.
This happens also when trying to open files from applications (in the column view)

First, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread.
Doing the things in his link is a good start for a monthly maintenance program.
If that does'nt help, check out his Spinning Beachball link.

  • Quicklook (column view) crashing finder when viewing photos

My Finder is freezing when I am viewing photos in the column view.  It works fine in list, cover flow, and thumbnail.  Any ideas as to why the column view quicklook might be causing it to freeze?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the easy fix first: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.

  • Finder in column view has no expander divider on the last column

I deal with a lot of graphics on my computer and I have a lot of subfolders. While in finder in column view there is no expanding divider for the last column when it is showing a graphic. When I first open a photo or graphic in finder the last column shows the graphic smaller than regular size. In SL there was a column divider to expand only that last column so I could make the graphic larger to see it better. Now in Lion there is no divider on the right side of that last column to expand the last column where the grahic is showing. In order for it to finally expand I have to drag the right side of the Finder window all the way across my display until the bottom slider bar disappears and then that last column will expand. This is frustrating having to have my Finder all across my display just to get the graphic larger.
Is there a way to get an expander divider to show up for the last column when viewing a graphic in column view? I know I can click on the "eye" icon to see it, but the column view will expand the graphic larger than 100% so I can see more details.
Thanks for any and all help.
    Connie

Yes, that is how my whole finder window expands across my display until the bottom slider bar disappears....then and only then does the last column expand. I have to have open as many as 8 columns to get to my graphic. Keeping the Finder window to a smaller size and using the bottom slide bar to navigate to the far right column is nice, but all I want is that far right column where my graphic is showing to expand so I can see it better.
Thanks but what you suggest only resizes the whole Finder window until it can expand no further, then the last column expands the graphic. But then my whole display is a huge Finder window.

  • FINDER NOT SHOWING DIMENSIONS WIDTH OR HEIGHT....IN COLUMN VIEW OR ICONVIEW

I have noticed for the last couple of weeks that my finder no longer shows the width and Height of images or anything. Dimensions has -- on all things. I have never encountered this issue before.
I hit "show item info" It looks like it moves when I check the box in thumbnail mode, but there is nothing there.
I have google'd around and have yet to find a solution.
Would be much appreciated if someone could point me in the right direction.

These files are EPS files not image files. They have a TIF or PICT preview inside the file, I believe in the resource or data fork of the file. The file extension is EPS, and I cannot change that, just type the letters. The actual extension, the 4 digit one, that is invisible is the one that is important. In the case of EPS the actual extension is EPSF or EPSI.
Just to try the fix I changed the name and it did try to make a preview, but it came up with nothing. It was blank in column view. The OS still reads it as an EPS regardless of the change in file extension.
Anyone have some answer that involves a command line, I think that is really going to be the only thing that solves this one.
