Finder freeze, kernel_task 100%, CONSTANT!

Hi folks,  I am really in a quandry since the latest Security update, I've been having nothing but troubles on my MacPro. It seems to be happening when I have 2 finder tasks going simultaneously, like if I am downloading a file and click into Activity Monitor, or stop a file update in mid stream, or when there seems to be some connection to the internet for a software update/check/download.
Here are the various symptoms and what I've done so far:
the finder will just lock and I cannot use the escape to force quit applications. I will try to force quit from the dock using a right click but then the dock also freezes.  The finder windows become unresponsive and I just get the cycling beach ball.  Sometimes on boot, I am seeing in activity monitor, the kernal_task go into over 100% of CPU and the system stops loading all the startup items (Suitcase, etc.) and seems to stall in mid startup.
I then have to force reboot using the power button because even though the mouse will move the beach ball, nothing becomes selectable and no programs can be quit or open.
What I've done:
permissions repair, disk utility repair of HD from CD boot, deep prefs repair (Onyx), reinstalled 10.6.8 with combo updater,  safe boot (still happens), finally reinstalled 10.6.0 from the install disk, but it stalled again when trying to update to 10.6.8 with the combo updater.  I have ALSO repaired PRAM
I have deleted colormunki, removed start up items, removed CleanmyMac, and other deep system programs.
Upon reinstall of the system software, my keyboard stopped being responsive, and text would not type. I replaced the keyboard with my OEM mac board, and it also experienced the USB failure (intermittent, now working).    I have seen the stall even when booting into the admin account.
I am concerned my user ID account is damaged beyond repair somehow OR that there is a systemic failure in the hardware somewhere I can't discover. Smart Disk shows no problems. I recently also checked RAM and everything with TechTool Pro and nothing has shown a hardware problem. The only problem I've encountered is with volume bit directory which I've repaired a few times. I think it keeps happening because of the finder freezes. Also did surface scan and no problems noted.
I've never seen this problem before in 25 years of mac use. This one is really troubling.  One thing I notice is that when the Finder goes into the freeze, it stops making calls to the harddrive because there is no sound. Nothing is happening.
Any help is deeply appreciated. I'm stumped and frustrated.

Okay, update. I did the AHT and there were not reported problems. I did the long extended test. It appears to be software related, but not sure which / what is causing the problem. What happens is that the mouse is moveable and I can quite any program that is not finder related but not programs like Safari, Firefox, Launcher, Activity Monitor or the Finder. IOW, I cannot Force Quit because the Force Quit dialog box will not appear. The finder is inaccessible as is the Dock.
I am running Parallels 7, and I read that it may be a cause of some problems, but I don't always have it loaded. Today I did.  I also note that Firefox is usually one of the programs that first starts backfiring. It APPEARS that the internet connection in my cable modem first stops functioning and that is the sign that things are starting to go bad. So it may have something to do with network actions. I often wonder if Flash may have something to do with it, but the pages that failed did not necessarily have Flash on them, and both Safari and Firefox both stopped functioning at the same time...
These are the last Console messages from the freeze before I had to force reboot:

10/10/11 1:52:18 PM          KernelEventAgent[70]          tid 00000000 received event(s) VQ_DEAD (32)
Also I note that after this stall happens, I reboot and run fsck -fy and it usually clears out some orphaned files, which I attribute to the fact that programs have stalled in mid stream and cannot complete their current tasks when I force reboot.

  • 10.9.2 Finder Freezes when resizing and changing directories

I just updated to 10.9.2 to find that when the Finder is open, and I resize the Finder, for instance to stack two windows side by side ... the Finder freezes when I simply drag the corner of the window around.
Similar thing happens when I click on a different folder.
Seems pretty odd given that I have a recent system with an SSD, and I didn't have the problem before.

Also, if I scroll the lower right edge around in a circle, the bottom part of the Finder window locks up.

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?

    Thanks Alex Leonardo

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Finder freeze while copying over network

i have two mac on a network at home, both are now with 10.4.11 - but ever since i updated to this system version i am having a problem with the laptop. whenever i copy a file over the network from the desktop to the laptop, the laptop's finder freezes for the duration of the transfer - i can't open other apps, can't access anything else. the status bar of the copy doesn't change. if another app is open before the copy starts, it works fine. mouse works fine.
i can't figure out why this is happening... any clues?

Same problem here, I think: Finder hangs (beachball & Not Resopnding in activity Monitor) during file copy then comes back when copy finishes. Hang starts when I click in the finder to view another directory on the remote machine. When copy is done on PowerBook via Airport, Finder hangs. 100 Mb/s ethernet stutters but does not hang up, but 10Mb/s hangs up.
Same issue on this thread in Feb: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6299419&#6299419
Some things I've tried to no avail:
    Fixed Permissions.
    New user does the same.
    Reinstall 10.4.11.
Etehrnet 100Mb/s - No freeze, but finder still jerky.
Ethernet 10Mb/s and Airport 802.11g hang.
Other mac, wireless to laptop - ok.
Used file appleairports2.kext from 10.4.9, no help.
    Deleted Finder.plist, no help.
    Re-reinstall 10.4.11
Tried airport with no security settings
    Trashed recent servers file.
When airport is faster, finder works slightly better, clearing freeze occasionally.
Activity monitor Finder not responding, sampling does not clear freeze.
I think it is interesting that Finder does better with higher data transfer rates. In fact, the problem is evident on an ethernet connection when I slow it down to 10 Mb/s, OK at 100. So it may be purely a Finder problem.
What I have not tried is going back to 10.4.9 nor a clean install of 10.4.11.
Has anyone figured this one out yet?
Thanks to UltraSoul for clear postings on this.

  • Macbook OSX 10.7.4 Finder Freezing/Crashing Unusable

My Macbook has been slowing down progressively over the last week and is now virtually impossible to use.
Takes a long time to boot and when it does the finder freezes for long periods before refeshing itself and freezing again.
I have booted in recovery mode and run the 'Repair Disk' utility which finds no problems. I have also Repaired permisions which always finds the exact same cycle of errors with every run.
I would like to do a clean reinstall but have come to a dead end with ways to get the files off the computer and back it up.
If the computer is booted it is now impossible to get eh files off.
In recovery mode when I try to create a 'New Image' it always crashes or gives me an error so I was hoping someone might have soem advice on how to proceed?
The macbook only has USB ports so I don't think I can boot it in Command-T mode and use my other computer to get access to the files.
Run out of ideas here so would appreciate any help.

I had similar problems with my  2010 MacBookPro i5, 2.4ghz after I upgraded to 10.4.7.
slow to start up, freezes, not waking up, beach ball forever......
after googling the problem I came across these 2 sites:
    http://gigaom.com/apple/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
They show you how to reset the PRAM and the SMC
I followed the instructions and now my mac is working fine.

  • Finder freeze when opening folders of my Western Digital external hard disks

I'm facing a big issue. I'm runnin' Mac Os Lion, I realized a clean install a few days ago. Everything is going fine, but every time I plug an external hard disk on my MBP, I can see the disk appearing on my desktop or in the finder, and when I open it, the finder freezes, I have to reboot manually, or wait to relaunch the finder. My disks are in HFS format, used to work great on Snow Leopard no longer than a week ago... What is weird is that my time machine (external hard disk usb) works fine... Moreover, I can see the disks in the Disk Utility, I can't click on "verify permissions" but on "verify disk" and it says that the disks are fine... Any idea ?
PS : I could have erase everything on them and reformat, but I need the files inside...
    Thanks

    Hi!
    Here's a suggestion from BDAqua:
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra number on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a number, and reboot.

  • Finder freezes when accessing an external drive

I have been using WD 3TB green drives in docks for storage for years. For the last 6 months occasionally I will access one of the drives and the finder freezes up, I will then need to restart the computer. When I try to mount my drive I get a "The disk inserted was not readable by this computer". I do not want to loose the data so I will not initialize the drive. Disk Utility will not even recognize the drive nor will Disk Warrior. In order to save the data I need to use a recovery software. I use Ontrack EasyRecovery Home, it works great but is taxing on the computer and takes a lot of time. So does anybody know why this is happening? Is it a problem with my computer or the manufacturing of the drives?
Probably a coincidence, but this has only happened to the WD green drives since they changed the packaging from green to yellow.

Remove maudio, specifically that com.maudio.usb.fasttrackpro.driver.  If you just move that out of /System/Library/Extensions (or if there is an installer) you need to reboot after adding/deleting kext's.
If no software was installed by you then somehow that external got that com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist installed in your /Library/LaunchAgents.  If the maudio removal doesn't change anything then this segat launchagent is the next to go.

  • Installation of Solaris 10 freezes at 100%

Hi, I am trying to install Solaris 10 on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 Server. However the installation will always freeze at 100% (I have repeated it a few times on RAID0 as well RAID1 configuration). It does not reboot and I am unable to do anything except to physically power down the system. When I power on the system again, it does not boot up because no OS is detected.
Does anyone know how I can resolve this? I had no problem doing the installation on my other servers. This server was running fine on Solaris 10 until one of the two harddisks crashed and had to be replaced. The problem occurs after I had changed the harddisk. Is there any particular disk configuration that I need to do before installing Solaris 10?

The Solaris IDE/ATAPI kernel module has problems accessing
    your ATAPI CD/DVD device.
Solaris 10 x86 currently has DMA disabled for ATAPI CD/DVD
devices. Maybe it works better if you enable DMA on the CD/DVD?
Try to change the "atapi-cd-dma-enabled" property to "1", on the
last DCA "select boot device" screen, in the edit properties submenu.
You probably have to press the "ESC" key to interrupt the cdrom
    autoboot, to enter the DCA.

    Hi there,
I don't have too much time to spend on this, but I want to make sure my comp is in good health (6 years and two HDD later). Whenever I turn off my computer, the desktop loads but no icons load and finder freezes (beach ball). I've read some stories but none seem to fit mine. I ran Console, and here is my report:

I'm thinking I need to delete a plist somewhere, but I'm not sure which one and don't want to take a big risk.
    Cany you help?

"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. It's worse than the imaginary "viruses" you were worried about when you installed it. Not only does it fail to protect you, it destabilizes and slows down your computer, and it sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.
Back up all data, then remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions:
    avast! Support Center
    Reboot.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and follow the instructions linked above.
If you still have problems after following those instructions, post again.

  • Finder freezes after multiple file copy

Hi!  I recently bought an external hard disk drive (1TB) and had it formatted for use of the Mac.   I copied all the files in my All Images folder to the HDD by selecting all the files and dragging to the HDD.   However, it seems to have copied/duplicated the files in the same folder.   Now Finder freezes (the rainbow pinwheel keeps appearing).   I am still able to do some keyboard shortcut functions -- to shut down and restart only.   I tried to open in safe mode and go to Finder's Go tab but couldn't find the Libraries folder so that I could delete com.apple.finder.plist (I googled this solution).   Help please.

I figured it out, it's so bizzare. I realized that for all of the problems I was having, the hang up occured right before the computer was supposed to play a sound. Anyway, I looked through my sound preferences and discovered my alerts were set to go to my jawbone headset, which I only connected to my computer a couple of times, but that was months ago. Anyway, I changed that and all seems well now. All I can assume is that the OS sees the sound is supposed to go to the headset, sees the headset isn't active (or connected), so it tries to connect and activate (which it hangs the app for), and that times out, at which point it routes the sound through the system speakers. This issue is probably uncommon, but doesn't seem to be anything unfixable.

  • Where can i find a DDTS-100

does anyone out there know where i can find a DDTS-100 decoder in the us i can't seem to find one anywhere on the internet every site says it is dicontinued does anyone have any INFO?

You're pretty much left with eBay. There's one on there now. It's at $62.50 with less than a day left. I searched everywhere on the internet for weeks to no avail. I even researched the international route, but it was way too expensi've. I finally got LUCKY on eBay and picked one up last week, brand new, with Buy it Now for $99!! It had been listed for only an hour when I got it. Chances are, you'll have to pay a premuim, since it has been discontinued. Good luck.

  • 10.8.4 Finder freezes since upgrading

Ever since upgrading to 10.8.4, my MacBookPro freezes. At first I thought it was the back up device, but even when that is not running, it still happens. I don't know if it is just the Finder freezing everything or an application like iMail. When it freezes, no application will work, I can not click to quit any open apps -- I have to use my mouse RIGHT click to quit those apps or to restart or quit. A few times I ahve had to quit/restart with theON/OFF button on the laptop since I can not navigate at all. Sometimes, when it freezes I am in a Finder window and the mouse will scroll up and down and highlight all documents in the Finder window.
So, the mouse moves, but only works on right click.
I can not close any open window.
I can not quit any app unless I right click on the app icon in the app bar.
Quitting every open app does not help.
I have to restart the computer.
This can happen mulitiple times in an hour or just once every few hours.
Version 10.8.4, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Any thoughts?

    Hey Chuck
There are a few things, one is to follow the steps in the article below to isolate if it is just your user or is it system wide. If it is user specific, the best advise is to back up the data and then copy it into the new user and remove the old one.
Isolating issues in Mac OS X

If it something that is system wide then you will need to backup and then reinstall the operating system. I have provided a link for that process.

  • Finder Freezing for many reasons

    Hello,
For 2 days now my finder has begun to freeze whenever i try to:
-Select a file from it, whether to open the file or attach it to an e-mail. (There may be more but these are the ones i know of for sure).
-Get info, whenever i press get info it freezes
These are what i have noticed to cause it to freeze so far, although there may be more. I have no idea why this began to happen and i can't link anything to it that i can think of. By freezing i mean that i get the never ending spinning rainbow/ loading icon.
Going down to the task bar at the bottom of the screen i can right click on finder and select "relaunch" and it will start working again, however it still won't have opened the get info window, attached the file to the e-mail or opened the file (although on occasion the file will open prior to the finder freezing).
Does anyone else have this problem or have had it happen and know how to fix it? It is basically stopping me from doing anything and i really need this computer for school.
Oh, and opening files from the desktop does not cause any problems or opening programs does not seem to cause it to freeze.

Still might pay to do this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • Finder freeze in Column View

Since recent updates, Finder freezes with the spinning beach ball when selecting items in column view. It can takes a few minutes each time before I can progress.
I checked for answer here, but found nothing.
I have repaired disc errors, restarted, relaunched Finder, repaired permissions etc - but the problem is still there.
    Any ideas or solutions?

If you haven't worked this out yet, sounds like you're having the same exact issue I was, solved here:
