Finder freezes after preference change

I attempted to change the Finder preference for what is shown when a new Finder window is opened but it froze.
If it is relevant, this was on a MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
Here is a video of what I am talking about...

Go to Terminal and type:
     killall Finder

  • ITunes freezes after any change in Preferences

After any change in Preferences, I get a message saying "WindowsMobileDeviceApp has stopped working", and then iTunes freezes. I have tried reinstalling iTunes as a repair, but it didn't work. Any ideas?

I don't have an answer to this, but a couple of things you might try.
If you don't have an iPhone it is OK to uninstall the Mobile Divices Support program. I've uninstalled mine with out problems. You can put it back any time by doing a repair install of iTunes.
The other thing you might try is to delete your preference files in case they have got corrupted. This takes you back to how you were when you first installed iTunes. If you have any special prefernces they will be lost, so make note of them.
You may need to make hidden files visible
    My Documents>Tools>Folder Options>View
Check Show hidden files and folders
    -- Quit iTunes
    -- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref and/or iTunesPrefs.xml
    -- Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref and/or iTunesPrefs.xml
For Vista the files are in:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

  • Finder freezes after multiple file copy

Hi!  I recently bought an external hard disk drive (1TB) and had it formatted for use of the Mac.   I copied all the files in my All Images folder to the HDD by selecting all the files and dragging to the HDD.   However, it seems to have copied/duplicated the files in the same folder.   Now Finder freezes (the rainbow pinwheel keeps appearing).   I am still able to do some keyboard shortcut functions -- to shut down and restart only.   I tried to open in safe mode and go to Finder's Go tab but couldn't find the Libraries folder so that I could delete com.apple.finder.plist (I googled this solution).   Help please.

I figured it out, it's so bizzare. I realized that for all of the problems I was having, the hang up occured right before the computer was supposed to play a sound. Anyway, I looked through my sound preferences and discovered my alerts were set to go to my jawbone headset, which I only connected to my computer a couple of times, but that was months ago. Anyway, I changed that and all seems well now. All I can assume is that the OS sees the sound is supposed to go to the headset, sees the headset isn't active (or connected), so it tries to connect and activate (which it hangs the app for), and that times out, at which point it routes the sound through the system speakers. This issue is probably uncommon, but doesn't seem to be anything unfixable.

  • Can't Find iLife after Password Change

I bought a used MacBookPro with OS X 10.5.6 installed fresh. On initial startup I set up my Account. The computer wouldn't recognize any passwords initially. Had to change Administrator's Password. Prior to this iLife applications were on this computer. After changing the Administrator Password they don't show up. However, when I try to download updates of them it won't do anything because it says a newer version is already on the computer -- which makes me think that iLife is still on there, but I can't find it. I only have the OS X 10.5.6 single disk which does not contain iLife on it to try and re-install. Can anyone offer help?

Spotlighting iLife doesn't find anything on my computer -- which is so odd. Unfortunately this used computer only came with the MacOSX single disk (which BestBuy pennied out to me). The original owner did not return any disks with the machine (Original OS was Tiger?). I'm a little afraid of buying iLife that when I try to load it, it won't, because for some reason my computer thinks I already have it. Guess I'll have to risk the 79 bucks. Thanks.

  • Pages autocorrecting spelling even after preferences changed

    I'm using Pages 5.0 (1465) on Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.
I'm writing a document with a lot of technical jargon Pages does not recognize and keeps trying to auto-correct. I have disabled spelling auto-correction in the Text pane of the Keyboard panel of the System Preferences. Never the less, Pages continues to frustrate me with unwanted auto-corrections.
I have quit and relaunched Pages. I have rebooted my computer. The settings in the System Preferences panel are still there, reflecting my choices. Still, Pages continues to auto-correct my text.
I can find no setting within Pages to change this behaviour. Am I missing something?
Any insights would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Uncheck "Correct spelling automatically". You do thatin the "Show Spelling and Grammar window"

  • Finder freeze after tabbed browsing

    Hi there,
since Safari 3 my finder and computer freeze totally after browsing with a lot of open tabs in Safari.
The result, I can’t move the cursor anymore can't quit any program and I have to shut down my computer. Before restart, I’ve realized, that nearly 3GB virtual memory was used by WindowServer and new windows in finder aren’t rendered properly. It seems like WindowServer is responsible for the freeze. Hope somebody can help me.

Since my last update 10 days ago , I'm experiening same thing, browsing the net with Safari ( but also with FF)
sometimes ( no particular reason) couses finder to "think" too long, all my moves are minutes long, If I wait sometimes I manage to quit the browser. then everything is back nice again.
it seems like rendering normal websites (one page , yes!) fills the memory, and this little color circle is spinning and spinning. no force quits possible.it drives me crazy. never had this before this update.
    some rendering problem

  • Finder freezing after software updates and uninstalling

    Help!!!
I updated iTunes,Safri and an secriuty enhancement as the automatic reminder, it hang up at disk optimizing(77% competed) after installation, I had to forcely shut down, then I uninstalled several unnecessary softwares.
Then the finder froze, I failed to open any software, the coloured cursor keeps rolling and rolling.
But the folder operation is functioning.
    What should I do?
    Help!!
    Junxing

I don't have an answer to fix your problem unless you have your hard drive backed up onto another hard drive, but the answer would of course be obvious if this were the case.
I would like to point out that everybody that has a computer, laptop or desktop, should have their entire hard drive backed up onto another hard drive. It should be considered as a requirement, not a luxury.
Next, before ever installing a software update, you should run the "Repair Disk" function and also the Repair Permissions function of the Disk Utility app, from the install DVD. If there is corruption in your disk directory and you go ahead and install a software update, all manner of problems may arise.
I never let the software update Install automatically. I always download the update software, then do the preventive disk repair, permissions repair, then do a fresh backup of my entire hard drive, then run the update software's installer. Now if anything goes amiss, I am not out a thing, and I am in a good position to troubleshoot. So far I have never had any problems with any updates but this method will pretty much make sure that if you do ever have a problem you are not in any trouble. Just restore from your current, fresh backup.

  • Finder freezing after update

My new macbook has started having problems ever since I installed the latest recomended update for Macbook Pro's with retina!
I cannot open any folders or files in the finder... trying to find files or open a new window just causes finder to go off and not come back (stop responding).
I'm having to "ctrl + alt + esc" to get out of the loop, but it is seriously limiting my ability to use the machine!
    HELP!

I thought this was stored in the library under preferences
It is (in the home folder in both OS X 10.7 and OS X 10.8).  ~library>preferences.
    Barry
P.S.  That is not a cure all, but it cannot hurt.
P.S. #2  I strongly recommend that people NOT use terminal commands unless they are completely comfortable with the arcane UNIX commands.

  • Finder freezes after dragging a file to the desktop

I am finding the if I try to drag a file to the desktop, it seems to move the icon there, but then freezes up... you can't do anything with finder at all..? I go up to "Force Quit" and select to "Relaunch" Finder, and it resumes normal operation... My work around is to copy and paste things onto the desktop, them trash the original file... a poor solution, but I'm getting by.. any ideas??  Dave

    I appreciate the update DJ.
Next I would verify and repair the startup disk using the Disk Utility. This resource should help you do that, named:
Repair a disk - Disk Utility Help
Print this help page so you can refer to it later. (You don’t have access to Disk Utility Help when you restart your computer in the next step.)
In the Disk Utility Help window, click the Share button , then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts and you hear the startup chime, hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
When the Apple logo appears, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, then click Continue.
In the sidebar, select the disk or partition you want to repair.
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back up your data and replace the disk. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following.
If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. You need to check each file in the list of affected files. Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.
If you can replace a file or re-create it, delete it.
If it contains information you need, open it and examine its data to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, then restore your backed-up data.
If the issue is not resolved, I would next re-install Yosemite. This will not compromise your data:
Reinstall OS X - Mac Help

  • Premiere Freeze after videoCard Change

In my PC, i change the video Card , from MSI GTS250 to nVidia  Quadro K4000

Did you remove your old driver and install a new driver?
•For Windows, do NOT rely on Windows Update to have current driver information

  • Cursor freezes after site change Mavericks

My cursor freezes for various amounts of time since downloading Mavericks. Any body else as I'm going to talk to Apple support under Apple care and they tell me no one else has this problem.

I had the same problem. I have found a work around - sort of. I have unchecked the option to "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" (System Preferences / Bluetooth / Advanced). I no longer have the problem. Having to wake the computer another way (I have a USB wireless mouse so no problem for me) and waiting a second or two for the bluetooth devices to connect is less annoying than continually losing trackpad connection. I hope that helps you too.

  • After preferences change, TM never ends

Just added some directories to my "not backup list" such as /System (told to include system files and applications too), /Applications, /Library, /Developer, /usr etc. just after i finished adding everything by /Users, time machine started backing up 7MB. after some hours it already backed up 7MB of 7MB but the external disk never stops reading. my fans are running with full power and activity monitor shows a constant read of 4MB/s. i have no clue what it is reading but it never finishes the backup !
i am considering erasing this disk and start all over again. any other clue ?

They said they would add the tv to existing service put on one bill with Reward cards at $400.00 plus two at 50.  They switched the cell account without knowledge of the customer and when I went to pay the bill they kept switchiing things back and forth between two different bills. Only ended up applying to one after all the fun and shell games with the accounts. I now had two instead of one. After 538.00  for May and June Service Still wanted another $400.00. They will keep charging and wait you out. Then they applied as a money order/ other. • Magic Trackpad freezes after batteries changed

The past few times my Magic Trackpad batteries have needed replacing, it loses its bluetooth connection and cannot be found.  The only way I can get things going again is to shut down my iMac with the power button and restart.  I believe this has only been an issue since I installed Lion.  Any ideas on how to fix this annoying behavior?  I'm using Apple's rechargeable batteries.

Yes!  I did that and then removed and replaced my Trackpad batteries and here I am again, with everything working.  I may even notice a few other positive changes.
