Finder get info comments

OK, I am always confused by Applescript's /natural/ syntax -- as opposed to any other script.
All I would like to do -- at the shell, is to simply print the "get info" file comments and or have programmatic access from, say, Perl or Python. Can anybody guide or help solve this issue?
Thank you for your help.
David Green

Thanks for the reply / effort James...
After much research, I have finally found "mdls" -- a Apple shell program which outputs metadata.
I suspect the mdls routine is far simpler and (possibly) more robust.
I shall also follow a link which may show how to update comments from the shell -- if I wish too:

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

  • "Spotlight Comments" in Finder Get Info window doesn't accept Clipboard contents

I wanted to paste caption and credit info from a NASA video download into the file's Spotlight Comments in the Get Info window. Done it in the past no problemo. Today it doesn't work.
Tried pasting the copied web page content to TextEdit and converting to plain text, copy again, paste still a no-go. Tried typing in the Spotlight Comments window, that works ok. Looked at the contents of the Clipboard and the text appears there, labeled either as rtf or text depending on where the text was pasted from (web or TextEdit).
Tried copying a couple of letters from the converted text, and they pasted ok into Spotlight Comments.
Suggestions to make the Clipboard contents paste?
    Thanks.

On further inspection, it appears that the contents of the old Comments field are carried forward into the Spotlight Comments field.

  • Cover Flow, Finder, Get Info icon dilemma

I was using Cover Flow to look at some photos. I clicked Cmd-I to Get Info in order to use the drop down menu there to change the default application to open one of the images from Preview to Photoshop. Once I did this the photo no longer displayed in Cover Flow. What I saw instead was a default jpeg icon. The icon of the image also changed in the Finder from an icon of the actual image to a default jpeg icon.
Seems like there are some glitches here. Can anybody duplicate this problem. Is there a known fix? Thanks.

Well, that is certainly strange! I tried it and sure enough I got exactly the same results. Which is truly weird because I have many Photoshop jpegs that do not have custom icons, and they display an icon in Finder perfectly well. And, of course, so do generic jpegs. But if you change a generic jpeg to open in Photoshop Finder stops drawing the icon. Furthermore, when I changed it back to open in Preview it did not recover--it continued to display the generic Photoshop jpec icon. Nothing I did would make Finder display a custom icon for the file. I even quit and relaunched Finder to no avail. The only thing that worked was to use my Automator workflow to give it a custom icon. Looks like a bug to me. Send feedback to Apple:

  • What events change the Created field in, finder, get info

On my laptop, in finder, in the get info screen there are 2 fields the Created Date and Modified Date fields.
I was looking at these fields for an app that I use on my iPhone, it was listed in finder, so I clicked the get info option.
The created date and modified date were 10/16 both the same.
I have not used this app in a long time, my question is this.
What event changes the created field?  If the app was downloaded on the Iphone will the created field get updated in finder?
or if it was an update on itunes, would that change the created date in finder?
Does the created date mean that the app was downloaded and installed on that date?

Thank you so much.  That works just fine.  However, I also just discovered something.  Evidently, at least some of the fields in list view are editable.  By adding Grouping to the columns shown and clicking on the empty field, I was actually able to type whatever I needed into the field.
I have not yet tried it with other fields, but will do so to see if it works for all fields in the list view.

  • FINDER: "Get Info" - Window not opening / not working

    Hi All,
I am kinda lost. Since upgrading to 10.6.4, I no longer can open "Get Info" neither through the context menu not through key [cmd+I].
This is in Finder only. On Application Level (iTunes e.g.) it works. I have
checked permissions, they're good. I also have tried another user account,
same issue here. So it's system wide. Is there a known issue with this? I
cannot find it. It is not listed anywhere.
In the Console I can find the following:
    ===========================================================================
12/10/2010 14:15:15 Finder[293] unable to find nib named: InfoWindowMoreInfoView in bundle path: (null)
12/10/2010 14:15:15 Finder[293] HIToolbox: ignoring exception '-[NSViewController loadView] could not load the "InfoWindowMoreInfoView" nib.' that raised inside Carbon event dispatch

    Any Ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Since the issue is systemwide, then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Finder - Get Info - changing "Open With"

In the Finder, I accidentally changed the default application specified to open a .nib file. How do I change it back to <NONE>. It is a system file.
Powerbook G4 Titanium (DVI)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Since replacing the file had no effect, it would seem that you made the change apply to all ".nib" files, either by clicking the "Change all" button in "Get Info", or by agreeing to do this in a warning dialogue. One place these settings are stored is in the "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist" file in each user's "~/Library/Preferences" folder.
No guarantees, but try launching "/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app" and entering the three commands below. The method depends on a command that isn't installed by default but will likely be present if you have been keeping up with your Apple updates and have left the contents of '/Library/Receipts' alone. It also assumes that the nightly maintenance tasks have been allowed to run:<pre>a='-c "Delete LSPrefsBindings:E\:nib" ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist'
    sh -c "`locate PlistBuddy |xargs ls -lt |head -1 |sed 's/.* \([^ ]*PlistBuddy\)/\1/'` $a"
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'</pre>You could also use 'plutil' to convert the file to "xml" format and edit the file with a text editor. The GUI way would be to install the "X Code Tools" and use "Plist Editor.app" to edit your user's "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist" file. Or to simpy remove the plist file, although this will remove all custom "Change all" assignments of applications for file types (actually, for this reason, it might be a good idea to back up the file first before trying the commands above).

  • File size in finder ' get info' does not refresh

I'm moving files about and need to check how large the folders are (in preparation for burning a dvd). 'Get info' is not refreshing the file size (and it's not just enormous folders). I have installed 'Refresh Finder' but it doesn't make any difference. The only way I can see the true file size is by restarting (a pain). What else can I try?

Yes, Finder can be a bit slow to update. It shouldn't be necessary to restart, though; using the force quit dialogue to relaunch Finder should suffice.
Press cmd-opt-esc (⌘⌥ esc) to bring up the dialogue, select Finder and click relaunch.

  • Finder get info ignore ownership on volume vs wgm sharing perms

if I check "ignore ownership on volume" (finder > file > get info), how does this affect wgm sharing settings?
i.e. Is it ignored if WGM handles the share?
    does it override wgm's settings?
just wondering how they interact with each other, if at all....
    thanks in advance

The "ignore ownership" box in the Finder's Info window completely disables local POSIX and ACL permissions, making the affected volume act like a removable disk. (Any user assumes POSIX ownership of the volume with full control.)
If you want to use a volume to house a share point, do NOT check the ignore ownership box. Yes, you can share a volume with it checked, but with very unexpected results.
Often people have trouble sharing FireWire disks because they don't check to see if the "ignore ownership" box is unchecked before attempting to share them.

  • Finder Get Info on music file shows comma in Year Recorded

    Has anyone else seen this?
If you Get Info on a music file in the Finder I'll see the Year Recorded as "Year Recorded: 2,009" or whatever year. Does anyone have any idea why?

I see the same thing. seems to be a minor bug. you can submit a bug report if you wish but since this bug is not present in snow leopard it is extremely unlikely that anything will be done about it.

  • Finder - "Get Info" - "More Info" panel has NO information any more!

    Hello all,
Can you help a slider out? My new MacBook Pro has a problem with the Finder. When I use the Finder, File, Get Info (or Command I), to get info about a file, in particular, a graphic file, I used to see stuff in the "More Info" panel. I use the image size information (e.g., 512 x254 pixels and the actual memory size) to quickly keep track of graphics for my web pages.
Well, for ALL file types now, I get NO "More Info" information in the panel. All the other panels, "General", Name & Extension", "Open with", "Preview" and "Ownership & Permissions" work fine.
I fixed disk permissions via the Install DVD and deleted the com.apple.finder.plist and neither of these have helped resurrect my "More Info" information.
I am running 10.4.10 and this is only on my machine. On the other 2 in our household, the panel works as it always has.
HELP, I miss my "More Info" info!
    TIA,
    Dave

I am also encountering the same issue...in addition, I'm having trouble installing Google Sketchup Pro 6, I believe there may be some sort of correlation between the two?
    Any help?

  • Snow Leopard Finder's Get Info fails to show Owner and Group for some files or folders which reside on a Shared Volume, hosted by G5 Server w/ OS 10.4 - why?

Frustrations with file permissions abound, as certain co workers are unable to manually determine their level of permission or who to ask to make changes to files and folders belonging to others. Users of Snow Leopard desktop OS get unhelpful feedback via Finder's Get Info, seeing only the permissions listed for "Everyone" and a statement that "You have custom access".  The custom message exists, presumably, because ACL's are employed on the shared volume in an attempt to give managerial control over these volumes to specific users, even if all users can create files and folders on those volumes.
Shared volumes are partitions of an external RAID which are set up as sharepoints on a G5 tower running Server 10.4.  Other persons in the office, using machines that are running desktop OS 10.5, can correctly see the assigned Owner and Group permissions (although the "custom access" still shows).  This at least lets the 10.5 user know who created a given file or folder, so that they can resolve permissions-restricted issues if they come up (i.e. User A wants to delete file X, but as it was created by User B, A must contact B and have them delete it.  In 10.6 it appears that A cannot determine who B is).
I know that ACL's are functioning (enabled on the drive) since we have been making use of ACL-granted write privileges for quite a while (and the custom access seems to be evidence too).
An error I encountered, pertaining to this, is that I used a 10.6 machine to create a working folder, then generated and saved several files in this location.  Expected permissions thus would be Owner = me (i.e. the user I was logged in as), R/W, Group = staff, R only, Everyone = R only.  However, immediately the permissions shown in Finder / Get Info consisted only of Everyone = R only, with no entry for Owner or Group.  Moreover, clicking + to add either an Owner or a Group resulted in error message that I had entered an invalid user or group, even though I typed in correct info (such as trying to add "staff" as a group).

  • Disappearing info in the "Get Info" panel

When I select "get info" on a jpeg file using Mountain Lion, I am able to see all the "More Info" data, but if I come back to that same file after navigating away from it, all the data disappears? I was able to flawlessly recreate this scenerio with multiple jpeg files.
Here's where it gets even wierder. If I open that same file in Photoshop and select "File Info," the information is still there; however, after If I close the file and go back in the Finder the info comes back, but goes away as soon as I navigate away from it and come back to it.

Here are the details on what I submitted. If you're seeing the same thing, please reference the Bug ID# 12156897.
Title: Finder Get Info... "More info" (spotlight info) disappears when reopened
    Summary:
The "More info" data is replaced with "--" after the first time it is viewed.
    Steps to Reproduce:
Make sure the boot volume has Spotlight enabled.
    Download some files using Safari.
In the Finder, navigate to the Download folder.
Command-I to get info on the downloaded files.
"More info" shows where the file was downloaded from.
    Close the Info dialog.
Use Command-I to reopen the Info window.
    Expected Results:
"More info" has the same data as before.
    Actual Results:
"More info" is replaced with "--" where it previously showed the download URL.
    Regression:
If you open the same containing folder (Downloads in this example) in a new Finder window, the first time Get Info is used, "More Info:" is correct. The second time or later, it is replaced with "--".

  • Get Info says C-Drive (256SSD) space is 80GB content/33.5 GB available - where is the missing 100+GB?

Question is how do I determine where the invisible content is - and how can I clean/remove /move the content to clear space on the C-Drive?
My MacPro C-drive is a 256 GB SSD and it has 80GB of program/system/library/User data burned into the four folders that appear in Get Infor. When the MAcHD Get Info comes up it reads the capacity of the drive is 240GB and the available is 33.5 GB - so with 80GB of content on a 240GB drive (one Partition)simple math says there should be over 100GB available - Finder Get Info says there is 33.5 available - assumption is there must be hidden files -

Use a program such as GrandPerspective to locate it.
