Finder has trouble opening a certain folder

Finder has trouble opening one folder of Midi files. It clocks away, before anything in the folder appears... several seconds of nothing. Then if I switch between views, the computer slows to a halt again, until the contents appear. This only happens with this folder of Midi files. Any thoughts?
I trashed finder preferences, repaired disk permissions...
David

open terminal, input ls -a after the $ sign, then type a space, then drag the folder into the terminal window, the path of the folder will be after the ls -a /path/to/folder now, then press return, this will list all of the files in that folder including the hidden files. To delete the .DS_Store file in that folder, you can use the rm command.
As for what is a .DS_Store file, see here or just google it.

  • PC user has trouble opening my photo attachments

The person on the receiving end has trouble opening and saving my jpeg (72 dpi). They appear in the body of both e-mail, hers and mine. She told me to send it as an attach and I said that's what I did. She is a graphic web designer and I can't imagine why she can't save them easily by right clicking.
    What gives?

You didn't answer every question, namely this one.
+If you are using RTF for message composition, are you adding attachments below all message text including a signature if one is used?+
RTF with Tiger Mail is really HTML but certain things must occur for HTML to be implemented with the message body.
Selecting a font or different font size and/or color via the Font panel when composing a message, changing the some of the message format - adding bold. italics or underlining selected text, using a Signature that was composed with HTML or RTF or that includes a graphic insert.
Windows Outlook has always had various problems with Mail's RTF and the extent of the problem depends on the Windows version and/or Outlook version used by the recipient.
For some reason when using RTF for message composition, Outlook has problems when adding attachments anywhere in the message body besides below ALL message text including a signature if one is used.
If Plain Text was supported with the exchange of email only, most if not all problems experienced with the exchange of email and message attachments would be eliminated so using Plain Text instead of RTF should resolve it with this particular problem being with Outlook recipients only. For such an old and mature email client, Outlook still has its share of bugs.

Use Software Update to update your os and anything else that needs to be updated.   Repair permissions and restart your computer when done.
Not sure if your new Mac came with 10.7.2 pre-installed as you make no mention of your os system.

  • How do I keep my new finder window preference set to open a certain folder on the server?

Since switching to Lion, my new finder window preference keeps resetting itself to default. When I open a new finder window I want it to be a certain folder on our server. • Finder: Cannot open a certain folder in list or coverflow view (OS9 folder, maybe polluted legacy?)

    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
I observe a very strange Finder bug (already in 10.5, and still now in 10.6), which only occurs within one specific folder with certain Finder view modes (list, coverflow).
    ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS & SPECULATION:
I already tried everything to fix it, both by GUI and CLI means, such as recursively setting file/folder permissions to default values, erasing .DS_Store and Icon files, etc, but nothing helped so far. The troubling folder and its contents (files and subfolders) is quite old, created still while OS Classic days, maybe it contains some "bad legacy / leftovers", like deprecated filesystem flags or resource forks, which cause the trouble.
    PROBLEM DETAILS:
    This is the directory structure:
    ~/Documents/Songs:
       /Composing
       /Final
       /Patches
       /Web
All folders can be accessed in any view mode without any troubles, except "Composing".
If the parent folder "Songs" is set to icon or column view mode, then "Composing" can be opened.
But in list view (my default view), or coverflow, the opening action, regardless wether via mouse double click or keystroke CMD-ArrowDown, causes no update of the window content. The window content remains in a flawed look and responseless state, only closing or using the return-navigation on the toolbar UI area puts the window content into a correct and reactable state again, or opening a new window and navigating to "Songs" again.
The time-correlating message to this error in the Console.app log reads:
    Finder *** -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: index (9) beyond bounds (9)
Interestingly: If you are within "Songs" using the list view, collapsing the folder "Composing" via the triangle symbol successfully renders the folders content, and you can navigate further down in the hierarchy with the collapsing method, and even double-click subfolders, which then open normally in list view. Just "Composing" itself shows this mysterious bug.

Maybe some of the invisible .DS_Store files in your folders are corrupt.
Launch your Terminal and paste the blue code below into it.
Press Return and type in your password - press Return again and wait for the word 'done.' to appear.
    Then quit the Terminal.
sudo find / -name \.DS_Store -exec rm -fP {} \;;echo done.
Next, relaunch the Finder - press Command Option - click and hold down the Finder in your Dock and select Relaunch.
    Good luck,
    Tom

First page of what? I assume that you are talking about Safari and not a book in iBooks, the Kindle app or the Nook app.
Clear Safari in Settings>Safari>Clear History and website data. Then reset the iPad by holing down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Very odd. When I go to the main discussion page I get a message that the boards are down and will be back up soon. This happened all weekend. I can get thru with Shiira. All other sites seem to load up fine.
If I click the reload button, the page does come up. Later if I go back, I get the first message again.

    Hi Peter
Since Shiira will load try deleting all the cookies for the Apple site.,
In Safari/ Security tab. I do this at times and like magic it loads.
However it is up and down and server change message at times.
A lot of it last week. Slow today for me on my end.
I have had much of what you describe, making me think it's my system,
    or Safari rather its AD.

  • Finder window always opens when I enter TM with Safari as active app

I want to recover some bookmarks I think I must have accidentally deleted in Safari, so I plug in the firewire drive I'm using with TM into my laptop and wait until the drive mounts on the desktop. I launch Safari and make sure it's the active application (it says "Safari" next to the apple in the menu bar at the top of the screen and I have a Safari window open). I make sure there are no other applications running and the finder has no open windows. I launch TM. A Finder window opens, and the default directory it opens to is my Desktop, unless I already have a finder window open to some other directory. This happens every time I launch TM so I can never actually use TM to recover my deleted bookmarks. So in other words I never have the option to restore anything in Safari. Interestingly, this problem does not occur when I launch TM with the Mail application as the active application. I thought I'd read that you can restore deleted Safari bookmarks with TM, but is it actually not designed to restore anything in the Safari app or is my TM simply malfunctioning? I have tried to get this to work numerous times, including after reboots and after running new TM backups.

Actually, this is normal behavior since Safari is not yet one the 'Time Machine Aware' applications. You are not going to easily be able to restore individual bookmarks. But you restore ALL of your bookmarks from any given backup. do the following:
    First, quit Safari.
    Go the the folder here...
    /Users/<youruserfolder>/Library/Safari
    Highlight the file labled bookmarks.plist.
While holding the "Option" key down, drag this file to the desktop. This will create a copy there in case you wish to return to this set of bookmarks later.
Now launch the Time Machine "time Travel" interface from the Dock.
Using the time scale on the right, navigate back to a date that contained the missing bookmarks.
Click "Restore" in the lower right.
Choose to replace your current set of bookmarks with this one.
Once completed, launch Safari and the restored bookmarks are available.
Later, you can drag the bookmarks file on the desktop back to the Safari folder to return to your previous set. Otherwise you can delete it.
Let us know if this resolve your issue.
    Cheers!

  • My iBooks keeps crashing. When I select a certain folder I have made in the app it consistently crashes. What can I do?

    Dear all,
Whenever I open a certain folder in my iBooks app it crashes. It doesn't even give me time to move them into another folder. I had this briefly before and tried deleting and re-downloading the app (this didn't work),  as well as wiping the whole iPad and starting again (which did work untill recently). Any advice on why this is happening and how to fix it.

the behavior you are reporting can be many things...so lets start asking a few questions. Did you remove or add anything to your computer before all this started ?...can you temporarily disable your anti virus and try again? is IE ( internet explorer ) working fine?

  • Document Browser: Possible to start from a certain folder?

    Hi,
in some cases it would be rather helpful if the document browser tab would open a certain folder in the whole structure.
E.g. User is displaying a DIR in CV03N where he/she can see that this DIR is a folder. When the user now jumps to the doc browser tab he/she should directly see the sub folders and not the top folders (private and public root).
Any ideas how to influence the doc browser tab?
    Kind regards
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
please see if note 968312 is usefull here. This should keep the Browser expanded if you go back.

  • Trouble opening files on networked storage

In our small office we are using a Buffalo Linkstation networked hard drive to store and share files between Macs and PCs. One of our Macs in particular has trouble opening files. Either:
    1. The file is invisible
    2. The file doesn't open in the correct application by default (for instance, an InDesign file opening in textedit)
    3. Only files created on this mac, and not on another, will open, though the files created on other macs are visible and have the same extension (but grey and without the usual icon).
Oddly, when I copy the file onto a USB stick and 'manually' bring it over, it will open fine.
The Mac in question is a Mac Mini (Power PC) running OSX 10.4.8. Other Computers on the network, which don't have the same trouble opening files are:
Mac Mini (Intel) with OSX 10.4.8 and Windows XP via Bootcamp
Power Mac G5 with OSX 19.3.9
    iBook with OSX 10.4.
Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop with Windows XP
It seems like a software problem, but the Intel Mac is running the same version of OSX. The troubled Mac seems to drop its connection to the Linkstation much more often than the other computers as well, suggesting possibly a hardware problem?
iBook, PowerPC G5, Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Could this be an issue with file names?
I've used a linkstation with macs and had huge problems copying files TO the NAS because of bad file names or file names containing illegal characters for the linkstations formatting (Fat32 or whatever).
Make sure that you have files with names up to 32 chars and not more
    Make sure you exlcude characters like " [ ] / \ = + : ; " , * |" from your filename
Include a file extension (.indd for an indesign file for example) for all files.
By changing file names and adding extensions as required I have been able to store and recover files from the linkstation.
Try a test file or two. If they work, it could be that that is the problem.

  • Has anyone else been unable to click [open] a document folder while in the column view in finder?

Since I have downloaded Mavericks, I am unable to open any document folder in the column view in finder.  When i go to any other view such as cover flow or list, they open.  But when it is in the column view, I am unable to click any folder - or any document for that matter. Can anyone help or atleast tell me I'm not the only one?
    Mike

okay i figured it out. for some reason i had to go to the settings menu and click arrange by name and it automaticaly fixed it. it was weird all of the names were gray, and the color tags were to the left of the folder titles.  i hope this helps if any of you had that problem too.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

  • Finder crash when opening any Folder

I am a very experienced mac user and this one has me stumped. Im posting here to see if anyone else has this problem.
Finder crashes when opening a folder on the desktop
Finder crashes when using any option from the Go menu (or key combo) except Airdrop.
Once Finder window is open on Airdrop any navigation to home folder or any other folder using side bar causes Finder to crash.
Using Go To Folder causes crash, even on hidden folder like /var
Finder is OK when opening files on desktop
All other apps can browse file system and open/save OK
Google Drive is not present on system (this used to be an issue a long time a go that caused similar symptoms in other threads)
Drop Box is installed. But issue occurs even when dropbox is not running
Using spotlight to open applications still works normally.
Clicking the Finder icon in the Dock results in a non-functional blank window entitled "Window", all tool buttons are disabled.
Repeatedly opening the same folder over and over results in the message "The last time you open Finder, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself" Two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen". Both buttons have no effect except to dismiss the dialog.
    Steps Taken to fix:
Booted into recovery mode and performed repair disk and Permissions - Finder Still Crashes
Removed finder preference files using terminal
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Recent changes to system:
iTunes 11.4 Installed with normal Software Update.
    Possible Cause of Problem
Found app in iTunes that has File Sharing enabled and has a shared folder. Curious as to what was in the folder i dragged it to my desktop and double clicked. Im not sure if iTunes would have had enough time to copy the contents of the folder before i tried to open the folder. Finder crashed. This was the first time it happened.
iPhone app in iTunes that I picked in was "Ubersense".

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
