Finder icon is outside the dock

I don't know what I did, but my finder icon is outside the dock. It's just sitting by the dashboard but outside the dock shaded area.
The thing is, I can't click on, move or do anything with the finder icon. It's just sitting there. What can I do? How do I move the icon back to the dock so I can use Finder again?

Restarts apparently will come into vogue on Mac too more and more.
I lost my Network-Connection yesterday. "network cable has been removed" was the message.
A restart solved it.
Furthermore some drivers need a restart by installation.
It's like new Adobe Trial-Software needs to be uninstalled by uninstallers, if you want to reinstall the licensed version.
Otherwise it gives you loads of trouble.

Find the com.apple.dock.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, drag it to the Desktop, log out/in or restart and let us know what happens.

restart did the trick!
whilst im here, ive been trying to compile a script that i can use in salling clicker to switch the default screen to the HDTV so when i use front row it displays on the HDTV
now i thought this would have been quite simple but it turns out the display prefs pane is not scriptable??
with a bit more googling i found this app

now this does what i want it to do, but to launch app i still need to get up, go to imac and launch it manually (a great hardship i know ;-))
so now ive been trying to compile a script that launches this app from salling clicker but it has root privilages and for some reason i can launch say mail or safari from terminal but not this app(TV Row)

The Finder Icon "jumped" off my dock..how do i get it back?

Hi. I just got my new MacBook earlier today and I was moving some of the dock icons around and somehow the Finder icon "jumped" off the dock and is now no longer selectable. It just sits on the desktop and hovers above all other programs but behind the dock. I can't click on it or move it or even select it using the lassoo, so any ideas what I could try? Or anybody have a clue what happened/has this happened to anyone before?

It's not like it's something I could've manually removed. I've tried moving the finder before and you can't do it. (this isn't my first OS X mac)

Try trashing this preference file and reboot.
HD > User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.dock.plist

Hi Terence, I hope you can help me too. I have a problem with opening iPhoto. It has always worked fine but now as soon as I click on the icon in the Dock or connect my camera I get the enclosed screen (see below). I have tried to re-install from iLife 11 Install Disk with no joy. I have moved my plist file to Trash. Any further suggestions please will be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the DMG file and drag to Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

Refer ResourceBundle/external resources like icons from outside the Jar

Hi,
I have a swing application and I am using ResourceBundle to support internationalization. I also refer some icons.
Now I have packaged my class file in a jar and I want to refer ResourceBundle and icons from outside the jar. This is to support runtime changing of values and icons without needing to recompile.
When my code is in Eclipse and I try to refer the resource bundle, it is working fine. But as soon as I have a jar and try to refer the resource bundle from the class path, I am getting MissingResourceException.

As per my actual requirement, I wanted to have these properties files (resource bundles) and icons directly on the classpath, so that user has the convenience to modify them.
I am not able to do so. I included the directory containing icons and resource bundle on the classpath, but i am not able to refer these icons from the main jar.So it works when the resources are in a 2nd jar, but not when they are in a folder that is in the classpath?
Is the relative path of the resource files the same in both cases?
In the simplest case (no nested folder), the icons are in the root of the jar, and the folder-equivalent is that they should be straight in the folder which you added in the classpath.
Or are they (frequent case) in a nested folder, along your package structure, such as com/yourcompany/yourapp/gui/icon.jpg?
In this latter case, you must not put folder "gui" in your classpath, but merely the folder which contains "com".
I am just wild-guessing of course, for a more specific reply could you post a sketch of your jar/folder structure (in tags) and your command line, including
the classpath part, in both the case that works and the one that doesn't?

It may have lost its connection (it is only an alias).
Delete it and create another one by dragging Mail from the Applications folder to the Dock.

When updating my spreadsheets (iWork '08) the umbrella icon appears in the dock, and the software backs up what I've entered. I don't recall setting this up.

Thanks, but I do know what the software is for as I occasionally use it to back up stuff onto my iDisk, but I don't understand why I'm getting backups of stuff like spreadsheets when I haven't set the system up for it.
The only back up I do have set up is for my iPhoto album to back up to my Lacie external hard drive...that's all.

Help. All of a sudden my icon for widgets (speedometer) disappeared from the dock. I can still get to it by pressing F12 but I can't find a way to get it back on the dock. Does anyone have a solution?

What happens if you enter Dashboard in Spotlight?
If you do not find the Dashboard.app with Spotlight it is most likely gone, but you could get Pacifist and extract Dashboard from your Tiger Installation disk.

Had an Excel file in the dock. When I restarted computer a question mark appeared in the dock. I can't find the file. Where can I find what was in the dock on my Time Capsule

I had an Excel file icon in my Dock on the compter. When I restarted my computer a Question mark appeared where the file icon was located in the dock. I need to find that file. I can't locate it either on my computer or on the Time Capsule . Anyone have any thoughts where the actual file may be located?

Sorry, you lost me.
If the file is on your computer, then you will find it if you open Excel, click the File menu, and click Open Recent.
If you deleted the file before Time Machine saved it, it is gone.
If the file was on your computer long enough for Time Machine to save it, it will be in your Time Machine backups.
Open up Time Machine, wait a few minutes for it to load, and click on All Files on the left side of the window.
Then scan to select a purple bar over on the right hand side of the window to select a recent date when you know that the document was on your Mac.
If the document was saved, then you will see it in there somewhere. Click on the file to highlight, then click Restore to bring it back to the present time.

the finder icon is sitting permanently on the desktop display, and not in the dock. i cannot select the icon to move it back to the dock. what does this mean? can i move it back to the dock?

Log out and back in, and see if the Finder icon is back on the Dock; if not, restart the computer.

Application icon remain in the dock after apps are closed

Hi Mac OS Community!
I have Mac OS 10.8.4. I notice that after I quit apps, their icon seems to stay in the Dock afterwards.
How can I keep the Finder from leaving closed apps icons on the dock?

First of all, note that some applications are not close just by pressing the red button at the top left corner of the application window. If this is the case, press Command and Q keys to close the app, so the application icon should disappear from the Dock.
If this doesn't happen, the app is selected to appear in the Dock, so just drag the application icon off the Dock when it's closed, or right-click it and go to Options, and untick "Keep in Dock" or press "Remove from Dock"
