Finder icon mysteriously becomes semi-transparent...

Hello...
This is my very first post in Apple official community
Today when I boot up my MBP, the Finder icon on the dock changes to a very strange look. The icon becomes semi-transparent with degraded quality. Below is link to my screenshot.
http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=268250&stc=1&d=129562169 4
I didn't do anything special last time I ran the machine. And I've tried to fix it by running all the normal disk permission repair routines and system maintenance scripts, but to no avail.
It is very clear that such icon is an indication that something has gone wrong, but unfortunately the system doesn't tell you what it is (maybe only a handful of OS X developers know what this icon means).
Does anyone have a clue?
Many thanks

I have the above problem. and Onyx clean user cache didn't work for me.
Thanks
The Onyx program worked...

  • A simple dialog with semi-transparent border (MFC)

    Hi,
    I have to make a image dialog with semi-transparency border in MFC.
    I had web surfing all the day and found this solution in the codeproject.
    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/42032/Perfect-Semi-transparent-Shaped-Dialogs-with-Stand
    But it creates two dialogs to make a semi-transparent dialog and the mechanism was so complex.
    And the release of the dialog object is difficult so that it may have memory leaks.
    I want a dialog (background is an image) with a semi-transparent border (corner - rounded).
    And I have to make it with only one dialog. If it's possible, how can I do it?
    Please help me, Thank you.

    The child control will become semi-transparency as your dialog.
    Do you want to show some child control on your dialog? If yes, you need the second dialog to host your child control.

  • Can anyone tell me why games are semi transparent in Pogo? I only have this problem with Firefox but not with IE9 or Chrome

    When I click on a game, the game window opens and is solid, but when it's fully loaded, it becomes semi transparent and washed out. I can post a screen shot of what I'm talking about if this forum supports it.

  • Little semi-transparent Finder window icons, tabs

    When I move a Finder window, I sometimes accidentally grab the tab (because there's very little visual distinction between the two, poor UI IMHO). When I release the mouse, it leaves a semi-transparent icon version of the Finder window. You can literally have your desktop littered with these and I'm wondering why Apple has let this bug go for so long?
    How do you get rid of them?

  • .m4v file icons have become solid white in Lion Finder under iTunes 10.6.3

    Hi there,
    I'm making this a dual category post, since I cannot determine whether this is an iTunes issue or a Lion issue.
    I discovered that after updating iTunes to 10.6.3, all Finder icons for file container type .m4v have changed from their standard iTunes "notes" icon (with "M4V") to a simple white icon, regardless of the Finder view set. (Icon, List, Cover Flow)
    All other iTunes-related icons are fine (.m4a, .m4r), as well as icons associated with other applications - it is limited to .m4v video files, as seen in the below Icon view screenshot:
    My thread in the Lion forums, including actions already taken to attempt to repair, is found here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4032208?tstart=0
    Has anyone else noticed this, or am I alone in experiencing this anomaly?
    Thanks!
    Steve

    Bumping an old thread. I have this issue also under OS X Yosemite (which has been present since Lion), where m4v generic icons are white. I tried deleting the finder plist and rebuilding launch services through Terminal and Cocktail, to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Can I get rid of the white frame on Finder icon preview?

    This is another one of those things that Leopard has done that makes me wonder what the heck they were thinking! (Don't even get me started on the Windoze95 sidebar!) Why the heck take a wonderful thing like the Finder icon previews in Tiger, and make them solid white squares, with a nasty white border? These are stupid, ugly, and a massive step backward in interface design. I am assuming this is all done for the sake of "cover flow?" With decent Finder Icon previews, who needs it?
    But please, please, if you MUST 'fix' things for me, give me the ability to opt out! SO until Apple remembers what GOOD GUI design is, does anyone know how to get rid of the border & white background?
    Thanks!

    To each his or her own, but I find the frames & white backgrounds, if not particularly attractive, fairly useful for a quick visual reference of the images' proportions (like tall & skinny vs. nearly square). This is pretty hard to see if transparency is enabled & large parts of the image are transparent.
    When I do want to see the transparency, I find Cover Flow (& Quickview) very useful, although Cover Flow doesn't always seem to show alpha channels while QuickView always does. Plus, both versions of the technology allow much larger previews than in conventional icon Finder windows & support scroll wheels, making it easy to review large numbers of image files quickly at high resolution literally at the flick of a finger.
    FWIW, at first I thought this was just a gimmick with little practical value. Now that I have started using it, particularly in conjunction with smart searches, I think it is a great addition to the OS, one that is so intuitive & efficient that it makes the old icon view look like an antiquated relic from a time when computers were not powerful enough to manage more than tiny thumbnails.
    I'm not trying to convince you about this as you seem adamant about not liking it, but I do think it is the logic progression for browsing through ever larger numbers of ever higher resolution images, & is only going to get better at this as it becomes more refined. Perhaps someday a future version will meet your needs.

  • Healing brush is semi-transparent

    I have Windows XP, sp2, Photoshop CS3.
    When I drag the healing brush over a section I want to heal, the sampled color looks just fine, but when I release the mouse button, the area turns semi-transparent instead of keeping the full color. I thought there was a problem with my transparency setting, but I can't seem to find where to view that, and I don't think this is the issue. If I drag the brush over the same area a few times, the area does not become more opaque.
    Perhaps I should mention that I usually use the brush to repair the borders of lines that are too indented to fix with the smudge, and I need to fill out the line a bit; the designated healing area usually has a background that has been made transparent with the eraser tool.
    Thank you so much for any help anyone can give me, I really appreciate it!

    The healing brush samples pixels of the surrounding area to be fixed. In areas where adjacent areas are different from target zone you can run into problems. Like OldBob says the clone stamp may work better as one can pick the area you are cloning from easier.

  • Semi-transparent JToolBar = strange behaviour?

    I need to have semi-transparent toolbar in the application I am making. I am using toolbar.setBackground(new Color(0, 0, 0, 50)); to do so.
    At start the icon looks like this:
    [Screenshot1|http://i29.tinypic.com/j66cky.jpg]
    After a few mouse transition, the transparent part of png icon becomes totally black:
    [Screenshot2|http://i26.tinypic.com/dmwjo9.jpg]
    Ive tried using JButton (with ActionListener), instead of JLabel component, but the behaviour remains the same.
    Heres the test code:
    package toolbartest;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class MainFrame extends JFrame {

            toolbar.add(new ToolBarButton());              //     line then is OK
            add(toolbar, BorderLayout.NORTH);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            new MainFrame("ToolBar Test").setVisible(true);
    class ToolBarButton extends JLabel {

  • How to make a semi-transparent layer?

    Hello everyone,
    I am making my own website with Dreamwaver. I am a totally
    new user and have no IT background. So could anyone here kindly
    help me with my question:
    In the main page I would like to use two layers with images
    inserted. The second one will be a semi-transparent image which is
    made in Fireworks. I would like to let this layer cover the first
    one. Because it's semi-transparent, so i should still be able to
    see the underlying image... I did all this, but finally in the IE
    the second layer is NOT transparent at all.
    I don't know where the problem is. Please, if anyone knows
    the solutions or have any suggestion, let me know!
    Thanks!
    Inca

    I'll show it to you my way:
    1. Type the text and click the layer mask icon. The layer mask should be all white and have a small border. That indicates the mask ist active.
    The foreground color should be black and the background color white.
    2. Choose the gradient tool. Open the gradient window. Choose the first gradient, "foreground to background" = black to white.
    Change the white color to gray.
    3. Check the layer mask > is it active?
    Apply the gradient from right to left over your text.
    See the thin line in the screenshot.
    4. On your layer mask appears the gradient, left starting with gray and right ending with black.
    The advantage of this method is that you can change your text without  modifying the gradient.
    The black color on the layer mask hides the text, the gray color makes the text more or less visible and white color means full visible.
    Hope it helps.

  • How to apply a semi-transparent background to a text box

    Hi Framers,
    The cover of my doc has a full-page .png file on a master page. I want to add the title of the manual on the body page of the cover in a text box. No problem. However, I want to apply a semi-transparent effect to the background of the text box, so the graphic behind it shows in a muted way.
    I'm sure this has to do with some combination of the Tint, Fill, and Overprint settings but none of my experiments have produced anything close to the desired effect.
    I did RTFM and also searched the Help and the forum. I truly hope I didn't overlook the answer---but if I did, it wasn't for lack of trying!
    As always, your expertise is very much appreciated.
    TIA,
    Gay

    Wow, I wish I had Photoshop! I use a less sophisticated image editor, which has always served quite adequately and since it supports layers, I'll try to figure out how to do what you're suggesting.
    (I did try a "None" fill and the bottom image does show up, but I wanted it a bit muted, as would happen with perhaps a "half transparency" and that is apparently what I can't achieve in FM.)
    If I understand correctly, I need to edit the imported graphic to make a portion of it appear semi-transparent, and then when I bring it back into FM and put my text box on top of it, it will appear the same as if I had been able to put a partial transparency in the fill of the text box...
    I really, really, really hate it when I find myself thinking "Word could do this easily, why can't Frame?"
    Thanks for your helpful suggestions, guys, you're great. As always!

  • Semi-transparent box that can execute php commands?

    I am trying to find out if it is possible to a) create a semi transparent box in flash, b) motion tween that box into place, c) subsequently use it to run forms and PHP scripts (connect to a MySQL instance, ect).
    I know that an exact answer to c) will be long and complex, so a simple (general) yes or no will suffice... but if someone could point me in more detailed direction with a) and b), I would greatly apreciate it!
    Any responses are very much apreciated!!! If you need to see the actual project I'm working on, or if I need to clarify my questions, please let me know.

    a) yes
    b) yes
    c) yes
    Instead of long and complex, how about we make it fun and easy.

  • Finder icons change of their own volition

    This is not a major problem, but is annoying, so I'm hoping someone can explain it.
    I have made no changes to my system recently nor have I used Nisus Writer Pro in a while. Yet, this morning, all my Finder icons for doc files have switched from Word to NWP! Which means that NWP has become the default application for opening Word doc files *without my asking it*. (This is even more bizarre when you consider that I've generally been using Pages to open these files as it loads quicker...)
    I have nothing against NWP (in fact, I quite like it), but I do object to system changes occurring for no apparent reason!
    Do any of our experts have any ideas on what might be causing this? Is it potentially symptomatic of a deeper problem (hope not)?
    Gavin

    Hi Gavin,
    I can't see how it would not be indicative of deeper problems!
    What happens if you change them to open with Pages?

  • Semi-transparent JFrame

    I'm creating an address book for my java class and was wondering if theres any way to make a JFrame semi-transparent like how winamp and trillian skins so you can see the desktop behind it. I've messed with a few different things I've found on the web but with no avail. Should I be using something besides a JFrame? There must be a way top do this but why haven't I been able to find anything if transparencies are so big these days? If anyone has any ideas please let me know. It's due by February 21st.
    Thanks in advance!

  • How to make a plane semi-transparent

    Hi everyone. I am new here, and would like to thank you in advance.
    I am trying to make a semi-transparent plane using 3D with QuadArray. Have set TransparencyAttributes accordingly; and have even tried TextureAttributes. It just doesn't cut it.
    Without setting transparency, the plane is visible both sides. But once transparency set, it becomes invisible.
    Can anyone give me some ideas? Thanks!
    Here's the code snippet dealing with this plane:
    Appearance ap = new Appearance();
    TransparencyAttributes transparency = new
    TransparencyAttributes(TransparencyAttributes.NICEST, 0.5f);
    ap.setTransparencyAttributes(transparency);
    PolygonAttributes cullAttribute = new PolygonAttributes();
    cullAttribute.setCullFace(PolygonAttributes.CULL_NONE);
    ap.setPolygonAttributes(cullAttribute);
    TextureAttributes texture = new TextureAttributes();
    texture.setTextureMode(TextureAttributes.BLEND);
    ap.setTextureAttributes(texture);
    Point3f points[] = new Point3f[4];
    points[0] = new Point3f(-0.2f, 0.2f, 1.0f);
    points[1] = new Point3f(0.2f, 0.2f, 1.0f);
    points[2] = new Point3f(0.2f, -0.2f, 1.0f);
    points[3] = new Point3f(-0.2f, -0.2f, 1.0f);
    QuadArray planeVertices = new QuadArray(4, QuadArray.COORDINATES|QuadArray.COLOR_3);
    planeVertices.setCoordinates(0, points);
    Color3f colors[ ] = new Color3f[4];
    for(int i = 0; i < colors.length; i++){
    colors[i] = new Color3f(1.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f);
    planeVertices.setColors(0, colors);
    Shape3D plane = new Shape3D( );
    plane.setGeometry(planeVertices);
    plane.setAppearance(ap);
    ********************

    I just found that if I leave the colors undefined for the plane (a Shape3D); that is, remove the QuadArray.COLOR_3 flag, then the transparency works. Unfortunately, in that case, I can only have a white plane, and there's still no way for me to add color to the plane with its transparency maintained.
    The right way seems to be using QuadArray.COLOR_4 flag instead. But somehow I can't get it to work. That is, no matter what value I am using for the Alpha value, the plane just remains opaque.
    Can anyone give me some suggestions? Thanks a lot!

  • Damaged multilayer files after reopening - strange semi transparent color fields in all layers.

    Big multilayer files show strange semi transparent square fields, without having worked on the the file. After closing instant and reopening it get's even worse. PS is CC 2014 2.2 on MBP 17, 2,8 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB,SSD. Right now I'm updating to OS X 10 10.3. Can I upload the files anywhere to check and probably repair them?
