Finder icons change of their own volition

This is not a major problem, but is annoying, so I'm hoping someone can explain it.
I have made no changes to my system recently nor have I used Nisus Writer Pro in a while. Yet, this morning, all my Finder icons for doc files have switched from Word to NWP! Which means that NWP has become the default application for opening Word doc files *without my asking it*. (This is even more bizarre when you consider that I've generally been using Pages to open these files as it loads quicker...)
I have nothing against NWP (in fact, I quite like it), but I do object to system changes occurring for no apparent reason!
Do any of our experts have any ideas on what might be causing this? Is it potentially symptomatic of a deeper problem (hope not)?
Gavin

Hi Gavin,
I can't see how it would not be indicative of deeper problems!
What happens if you change them to open with Pages?

  • Preferences changing on their own

Preferences for applications and the sleep mode seem to be changing on their own. What am I looking for and how do I repair it?
It was first noticeable in QuickBooks Pro. The company file would stop reacting to entries and then when the application was restarted it could not find the file. All windows were reset to their default locations and sizes. Now the machine falls asleep during movies in FrontRow.

    Hi Donald,
It seems like 2 unrelated issues, if you did not attempt to rename your home folder?
For Sleep try trashing these prefs:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    The second sounds like LaunchServices:
Launch Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister \-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. After that, log out and back in or restart.

  • I'm having an error in Photoshop CS6 where the numbers in boxes (like image size width) are changing on their own. Can someone please help me figure this out?

This was happening all the time on my old 2006 iMac, and I thought that when I upgraded to a new computer it would go away. No such luck.
Sometimes the program works just fine, and other times I have this error. I haven't been able to pinpoint what is causing it.
Basically what happens is, I will try to type a number in the box to edit the size of the image (or sharpness, etc. something that requires you to enter a number), and as soon as my mouse hovers over the box, the numbers start changing on their own. As soon as I move the mouse away, the problem stops, but of course this means that I am unable to type in the number that I want.
I've tried unplugging my mouse and keyboard - that doesn't change anything.
Has anyone run into this issue before?
    Btw, I use a 2013 iMac, OS version 10.9.5
(I have a video clip of this problem, but I don't know how to share it here)

Your task is hardly a case for Photoshop: replacing text accurately in a scanned, not even
    straightened image.
    My recommendations:
    a) put a crossreference list on each page
       or
    b) straighten the scans and improve the contrast, both by Photoshop.
Then apply a program which converts images of text into machine coded text
by OCR - Optical Character Recognition , for instance Abbyy Finereader
       http://finereader.abbyy.de/professional/?adw=google_eu&gclid=CMirrcCMx7MCFZHRzAodlisAJg
(I'm not related to the manufacturer of this software, I'm just a user).
In coded text it's easy to replace isolated character groups as required.

  • Push notification settings changing on their own

I have an iPhone 4 and so does my wife.  We understand how to set push notifications on our phones for different apps.
On my wife's iPhone, the push notifications for whatsapp and viber keep switching on their own from Alerts to Banners.
We do not understand why this keeps on happening, time after time.  Basically every time the Phone is powered off and back on again.
    Any input greatly appreciated, thanks

I've been on Pay As You Go from the start so it's not a contract SIM but there was a little card in with SIM when I bought the phone that said to change the setting to idata as O2 had just changed it, so I did that, but since the data outages that O2 had a couple of months ago that setting didn't work so looking for a solution I found out about changing it to payandgo and that worked but keeps changing back.
Maybe it thinks that idata is what it should be, but I don't even have to sync the phone to iTunes for the setting to change back to idata, its like O2 are sending a signal to the phone to change it back or something or maybe the idata is set on the SIM and the Phone checks that from time to time and overwrites the way it is in the Cellular Data Network settings screen, very odd and infuriating either way.
There has to be a way to fix this, anyone have a clue?

  • Colors changed on their own!

Woah - I just opened my ical this morning and the color palette for my calendars changed, evidently on their own! Enyone else have this happen?

I've come over from the other thread mentioned above. I think someone at Apple must be colourblind; since this morning blue, red and purple seem to be interchangeable. But only on my 'work' and 'home' calendars, the other calendars keep their colours. Each time I refresh the 2 calendars change colour, the 3 attached photos are from 3 consecutive refreshes with no other change to the calendars.
Come on Apple! Sort it out!

  • 5 Months later, finder Icon changed

About 5 months ago, I changed my finder icon on my dock. I later changed it again and then back to normal. For some strange reason after I restarted after a adobe cs4 trial install error, it changed back to the icon I changed it to 5 months ago. When I checked the contents of /system/coreservices/dock.app/contents/resources, the finder icon was nowhere to be found. So, I found a backup icon, placed it in the folder, killall'ed my dock, then finder, and none of them worked. I then logged out, didn't work. After a restart, the icon was still the same. The finder.app icon is the correct one, but both when I alt-tab and on the dock, the icon is incorrect. Does anyone know how this is even possible, or have any suggestions. I am quite currious as to why this has happened, and I also want to fix it.

    Nope, none at all.
The only thing that comes to mind is that you still had the icon on the hard drive somewhere and somehow it linked to it again even though it was in the wrong place.
You might want to run repairs with the install disk or Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro. Usually weird behavior is a sign of something screwy in the directory.

  • ICal Calendar Colors Changing On Their Own; iCloud Connection

    AGGRAVATING PROBLEM:
Many in this forum have written recently about a problem ongoing for people with multiple iCal calendars where iCal calendar colors change "automatically" when you haven't selected those colors, or even "change back" before your eyes to some color your DIDN'T select after you select a new one.  If you log into iCloud on the Web and try to change the color of certain calendars, they refuse to change.  Try as you might, the color you want for your calendar won't "stick" and it is forced to be the wrong color on all your devices.  In some cases, even the names of some of the calendars cannot be changed.  On other calendars in your list, the colors and names will change fine.
Related symptoms:  Calendars you have deleted "come back."   Or, calendars you did not create yourself show up in your calendars list, such as "Calendar" or "Home" or even "Untitled."  Note that the problem seems to be most prevalent with calendars with names "Home," "Work," OR either of these words in the NAME of the calendar.  For instance, "Bob's Work" might get snagged (it can't be deleted without coming back or its color is stuck and "comes back").
I spent a long time on the phone with a helpful Apple senior advanced specialist on this problem today.  We conducted a very large number of "experiments". Our family has two iPads, 2 iPhones, and 2 iMacs, so it was easy to rule things in or out.  I will present some information that may help.
SOME OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE GOING ON:
First, Apple has not resolved this.  But the problem appears to be related to iCloud, and NOT to individual devices.  After de-linking all of my individual devices from iCloud, I could change any of the colors or names at will on any given device, create new calendars and then change their colors to whatever I wish, delete calendars, change names...no problem.  However, after re-linking calendars to iCloud, all the problems mentioned above returned.  The chances that my iMacs, iPhones, and iPads are all causing the problem independently is very low. They also have slightly different OS versions on them, so it is not likely an a particular device OS, though that could be indirectly related.  Also, the colors "change back" within about the same time (usually a few seconds to up to 30 seconds) that it takes to do a "refresh" (i.e. an update) to the iCloud servers.  This when iCloud is turned on, and the absence of it when iCloud is turned off (for calendars), strongly suggests that it is the iCloud server and its interaction with your devices that the fundamental cause of the problem.
Apple has said that they are aware of this problem and their engineers are working on a fix.  Historically, this can mean just a few days, or it could be a few months, years, or "whenever."  They don't give estimates of when it will be fixed.  Exactly WHY this is happening is unclear, but my guess is that it is a modification to the iCloud server code that Apple implemented without testing it thoroughly enough to discover this problem.  Apple does not admit to that, of course and I don't know if I am correct.
A WORKAROUND SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:
Please note this is a workaround and not a full fix.  Apple needs to run a patch on their iCloud server code.  Until then, I did the following which seems to have worked for me for now.  Read the whole list before deciding whether to proceed.  I don't guarantee it will work in all situations.
Note...I found I was stuck for now with the color of ONE of my calendars.  If you are like me, you want to keep that one and work around it....
Backup first... Make sure that your iCloud copy of your calendar data has the calendar event information you want to save - even if the color is wrong.  Log in at www.icloud.com and do a refresh to sync to the Cloud.  Check over your calendars online to make sure the event data appears to be there for all of your calendars (even if their color or name is not what you want).
    Steps:
    1.     Go to every device that you have linked to iCloud separately. Go into Settings, iCloud, and then uncheck the "Calendars" option.  This delinks your calendars for that device to iCloud.  As you do this on each device, when prompted, select "Keep On My" ..iPAD...iPhone...iMac... etc.  This will preserve the calendar information on the device so it won't be deleted.  I think this is safer, but you can click on "Delete" if you want, too.  Note - if one of your devices is an iMac, with OSX Lion and before, you may be forced (I was) to delete the iCloud calendars from the iMac.  So again, make sure they are backed up to the Cloud first (or somewhere else).
    3.     With the iCloud Calendars Option on all your devices still turned off, go to the WEB and log into iCloud.com.  You need to figure our which calendar iCloud won't let you change the color for.  You probably already know.  On iCloud.com, click on "Calendars," then click open your calendar list and select "EDIT" at the bottom of the dialog box.  One at a time, click on the color dots next to each calendar name and try to change the color (you can put any back after the test if you want). You will probably see a certain one that just goes right back to what you don't want.  This is the one for which the color is stuck, but you may be able to change the name of it now that your devices are unlinked from iCloud.
    4.     Still in iCloud.com, change the names and colors of any of the other calendars you wish to change.  Delete any empty calendars that mysteriously appeared without your wanting them.  Take note of all the calendars, names, and colors that are on the final list of calendars.
    5.     On EVERY device, BEFORE turning iCloud back on on ANY of them: Change the colors and/or names of calendars, delete calendars, etc. so that the calendar names and colors on the device are exactly the same as what you left in iCloud.com in the last step.
    6.   One at a time on each device, go back to Settings and then "iCloud" and check again the box for "Calendars."  You will be asked whether you want to "MERGE" your data with iCloud.  I selected MERGE to ensure I didn't lose anything.  Link each device again into iCloud one at a time.
    7.  When each device is back, go back to iCloud on the Web, or go into iCAL on one of your devices.  Set to view ALL calendars.  Look for duplicates of some of your events.  I found quite several as an artifact of "merging", but in my case it only took me about 5 minutes to go through quickly and delete the duplicates.  It deleted the duplicates on all of the devices at once, so I only needed to delete dups on one device.  I did not find that I lost any events as long as I kept one valid copy.
Again, no guarantees...hope this works for others.  Good luck.

I'm getting the same thing and it's really bugging me! Keeps changing colour to one I do not want and I have tried everything to get it to stay the colour I have chosen!!

  • Mail settings changing on their own

I have noticed for several weeks that when I change my account mail preferences, they change back to 2 iCloud accounts and it says I have mail or junk in both of them but I am unable to find them.  I have deleted both of those ghost iCloud accounts and put in my primary account, but a few hours later, the primary account is gone and 2 ghost iCloud accounts show up along with my other 2 mail accounts.  Help!!!

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Data settings changing on their own and losing connection

Can someone tell me why when on PAYG with the payandgo.o2.co.uk setting does it change back on it's own to idata.o2.co.uk and then my internet connection is lost and when I try and change it back to payandgo.o2.co.uk half to time it doesn't stick, so I have to do it again and again till it does, and then it'll last a day or two and change back again losing my connection again, this is driving me nuts.

  • IOS5 Calendar Colors Change on Their Own

I have a number of .ics calendars I subscribe to & have the same calendars on my iPhone & iPad.  As most people, I assign each calendar a specific color to keep everything straight.
Since upgrading to IOS5, one of the calendars on my iPad keeps changing colors on it's own - I'm not adding any other calendars that might cause this, but it only seems to be happening with one specific ics calendar - others are fine.  No issues with the same calendar (or any oters) on my iPhone.
I've tried changing the color back manually, as well as deleting & re-adding the calendar - neither appears to have helped.  Only remaining option I can think of would be to wipe the iPad clean & start fresh with IOS 5 - I think I had to do this with my phone for other reasons & wonder if this may be the reason why it works there but not on iPad....?

I'm getting the same thing and it's really bugging me! Keeps changing colour to one I do not want and I have tried everything to get it to stay the colour I have chosen!!

  • Mail preferences not sticking and sometimes change on their own.

Maybe somebody else has seen this odd behavior. Here's the scoop:
I clean installed 10.5.1 yesterday on my Mac Mini(1.42GHz G4, 1GB RAM)and after setting up my admin account, I immediately grabbed the 10.5.2 through Software Update. This is my first taste of Leopard and so far so good.
Now that everything is updated, I started to configure Mail. I set up two IMAP accounts in Mail and specified certain preferences under Mailbox Behaviors. I unchecked all the boxes that had to do with storing things on the servers. Since my IMAP account quotas are fairly small, ~150MB, I don't want Mail storing anything on my company's servers. Saved the changes and started logging in to my accounts. Tested it out by sending a few messages and noticed my sent messages and deleted messages were being saved on the server. Back in to Mail preferences I go and I noticed that some of the check boxes under Mailbox Behaviors had checkmarks back in them. What gives? I didn't leave those boxes checked. Why had several of the checkmarks reappeared?
Anyways, I've toyed with this thing for hours. It's seems to be a random problem and I don't have any clue why it happens. I've even deleted my own com.apple.mail.plst file and Mail folder multiple times to start over from scratch. I always uncheck the "store xxx on the server" boxes, but occasionally Mail turns them back on. It's happened multiple times now, so I'm getting a little paranoid about it. The last time it happened, I found the "Store draft messages on the server" re-checked under one of the IMAP accounts.
Seems like Mail.app has a mind of its own. Any idea how to put a stop to it?

I've done some more testing and found out several things.
    1. It doesn't matter which of my IMAP accounts I configure Mail to access. I can reset Mail (by deleting my ~/Library/Mail folder and com.apple.mail.plist file) and then reconfigure my preferences for each IMAP sever. The problem still persists.
    2. It definitely is a 10.5.2 problem. I erased the HD and reinstalled 10.5.1 from DVD onto my PowerBook G4 and then ran Mail. Configured it to access my IMAP accounts and had not problems with it. It didn't reset my "Mailbox Behaviors" preferences at all. In fact, it worked the way it's supposed to. On to step 3.
    3. I then installed the 10.5.2 combo updater(dl'ed from Apple's support website) and ran Mail. With the previous accounts still configured, it didn't mess with my "Mailbox Behaviors" at all, but when I reset Mail (by dumping my Mail folder and prefs into the trash) and reconfigured it for my IMAP accounts, the problem came back.
    4. With a fresh reset of my Mail preferences in 10.5.2, the very first email I send cannot be found in any folder until I quit out of Mail and then come back in. Checking my "Mailbox Behavior" prefs, I see that Mail has decided to put the check mark back in the "Store Sent Messages on the Server". That's not the way I set it up in the begining. This weird behviors repeats itself on the first draft message I save and the first email message I delete out of my Inbox. Mail always causes the first draft and deleted message to disappear until I quit and come back in. The "Mailbox Bevaior" prefs also get reset for storing drafts and deleted messages on the server.
So there we have it. Many hours spent on this thing. If others want to try it out in 10.5.2, just move your Mail folder and plst file out of your home folder temporarily and re-run Mail. Put your settings in, uncheck a few boxes under "Mailbox Behaviors" and see if Mail starts messing up.
I guess I'll be waiting for this problem to be resolved in 10.5.3. Until then, its back to 10.5.1 for me.

  • ITunes tab settings changed on their own

I have an iPad Air running iOS 7.1.1. In prep for 7.1.2 I was about to backup first and noticed something odd. The Sync Music, Sync Movies and Sync Books checkboxes at the top of each tabbed page, weren't checked like I always have them and then I have "Selected items…" however each page words it, so I can just sync what I want versus my entire Library wouldn't begin to fit.
When these boxes are unchecked, your Library items either don't show at all on the page (Music) or are grayed out (Movies and Books).
And when you check them, as in my case to restore my preference setting, I get this rather scary warning
I definitely don't want to upset, change any content on my iPad. I do want to add a new album I added to my Library, but if I'm reading this correctly, it seems I have to remove everything and then re-sync?
On my Summary page, I have:
Which I've never understood the correlation between selecting #3, #6 and then clicking to sync manually or only checked items, whatever the wording is, on the individual tabbed pages like: Music, Movies, Books.
You can see that I used to have the tabbed Music page's "Selected…" radio button checked so I could only sync over the music I wanted. Why i have to click this pref on the tabbed page and also on the Summary page globally for all content, is the most confusing UI I can think of.
And I've asked AppleCare to explain this over the years and no one has ever made sense of it.
If anyone can help me out of this so I can restore my Sync Prefs without having to delete my iPad content and reSync it that would be great.
And then I someone could explain the correlation between the global sync checkboxes on the Summary page which sound redundant to each other, and then to the manual sync check box on the individual pages, that would be great to finally understand what Apple means?
    Thanks,
    Steven

This was likely pushed to you from the BIS system.  The icons were supposed to be like that but they have not been working with the latest OS's.  They must have finally fixed the problem.  You can't change them.

  • Timings changing on their own

I'm working on a project in iMovie 08. At the start of my movie I have a series of still photos with each photo separated by a transition. I'd like the photos to show for 6 seconds with 2 second transition. After I set the duration for each transition and photo the timings automatically change back to much shorter values than I've set. This seems to happen after I've set up a few transitions and photos with the timings I want. Can someone explain why this is happening and how to keep the values I set.

    AppleMan-
You helped me on a similar issue, and I'm having a different "timings changing" problem.
Whenever I change the duration of a transition, the times of one or both of the clips on either side change. This happens even with "Display Timecodes" checked, and when the transition is 1/2 or less the length of the clips.
    Examples:
    *clip 3:00 > trans 1:00 > clip 3:00*
change the transition to 1:15, and I end up with
    *2:20 > 1:15 > 2:20*
(*note that violates the transition-1/2-of-clips rule; if anything the clips should have gotten longer.)
    OR:
    *3:00 > 1:15 > 3:00*
changing the transition down to 0:05 ends up with
    *4:07 > 0:08 > 4:07*
(*Note that it did not even accept the change I wanted.)
Those are just two examples. This happens whenever I change either a photo or a transition. I have to keep making each "change" four or five times and eventually I get the durations I want.
It seems as if iMovie is trying to keep the length of the Project the same, or fitting it to some other criteria I can't determine. I have examined preferences, and searched the Help using various words, and cannot find an explanation. I understand 30 fps, and that part of each photo's duration will be used for the transition.
Changing transitions and durations is essential to pacing with various music clips. Is there any way to edit normally, without having to un-do all these automatic changes?
Please help if you can. Thanks.
