Finder icons re-arranging after pasting file?

I just transferred from snow leopard to mountain lion. I deleted my finder plist and sidebar plist. I have finder set to "arrange by none" and "sort by none". I like to manually place and order file icons.
When I copy and paste more than 2 files into a finder window it re-arranges all of my icons and orders them by name! I also noticed it did this a few times when saving files from photoshop with new file names.
Any ideas?

Specifically, the typical cause for unexpected rearrangement of desktop icons is an adjustment in resolution. For an unsupported video driver, there can be unexpected behavior where the display is not detected correctly and thus displayed at default resolution.
Usually this happens when changing power states, such as restoring from sleep. You may want to look into updated video drivers if they are available.

  • Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?

Message title says it: Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?
I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base that says these two options no longer work or still do.
I do not have a system capable of running Lion, but I need to know the answer nonetheless.

Gee, I don't know: "paste attachments mail Lion"? ;-)
One further question, if I may: in Panther (which is where I've aggregated nearly 7 years of mail), if you copy more than one file in the Finder, switch to Mail, and paste the files into a new message, only the file names paste in. If you copy one file and paste it into a Mail message, you get the file, not just the name. Is that still true, or has that (IMHO) bug been fixed since 10.3.9?

  • Copy/pasting files in finder?

After using OS 9 for a while, and growing accustomed to the quirks and how to move around in it, I've found that there is no way to copy and paste files for the purpose of...........well copying them and pasting them somewhere else. I've found that if I want to copy a duplicate of a file somewhere else, I must first duplicate the file in the location that it's at, and then, move the duplicate to the desired location. Then, once the duplicate is where I want it, I must deal with the fact that the file name is appended with "copy" on the end of it, and rename it if it bugs me.
Now, this is all fine and dandy, until last night, when I had a bunch of music files on a USB flash drive that I wanted to import onto iTunes (that's iTunes version 2.0.4
I found that when I plugged the flash drive in, it mounted on my desktop. I opened the flash drive contents, and saw my music in it's own folder. I thought I'd just drag and drop the folder of songs into iTunes. I did, and it seemed to work. But when I ejected my flash drive, iTunes didn't know where my songs were -- go figure they were nowhere to be found on my hard drive, but instead iTunes was just reading them off of the flash drive.
So, I deleted the broken song links from my iTunes library, and reconnected my flash drive. I then dragged-and-dropped the folder of songs onto my desktop, which took about 1 second.......strange I thought. I control-clicked on the folder on my desktop, and it indicated that it was still stored on my flash drive. I even tried moving this folder to my root Macintosh HD level, and it went in instantly, but it seemed as though it was just an alias of the folder. If I ejected the flash drive, the folder would disappear. If I put the flash drive back in, it reappeared.
Finally, I moved the alias-like folder to my desktop, control+clicked on the folder, and chose "duplicate." 10 minutes later the duplicate was on my desktop, and both folders were registering that they were stored on the flash drive. But, I moved the duplicate folder to /documents/itunes/itunes music, and then they seemed to actually go to my hard disk. I ejected the flash drive, and the first folder went away from my desktop, but the duplicate ones were still on my hard disk (whew!) and I was able to add the folder to library successfully.
Now, luckily I had enough extra space on my flash drive to do this operation, but if not, I'm not sure how I could have moved these files onto my hard disk without duplicating them, and moving the duplicates. Did I miss something? Or is this just the nature of the beast?

    Hi, sapranojam85 -
That is the nature of it.
The desktop is shared turf. Every mounted volume has a desktop - it's an invisible, transparent, always open folder. Imagine them stacked one on top of the other, like layers - the mouse has the ability to ignore the layers, but the files (the icons) do not.
When you drag an item out of a mounted volume's icon, it is dragged onto its own desktop - and is not actually copied anywhere, nor moved to a different volume. When the volume is dismounted, the files go with it, since the desktop later they are on is still part of that volume.
The solution - drag the files into a folder belonging to your hard drive (such a folder can be on the desktop, because it will be on the desktop layer belonging to your hard drive), or drag the folder of them onto the icon of your hard drive. Doing that will copy them to the hard drive - and they'll stay behind when you dismount the other volume.
Another way which should work better in this case...
When you hold down the Option key and drag an item (file or folder) to a new location, the item is copied to (duplicated at) the new location. If this new location is in a folder or place other than the original folder, the term "copy" will not be appended to the name of the item. And, if the destination is the desktop, the item should be placed on the dekstop layer belonging to the boot volume.
So, if you hold down the Option key and drag a folder from your flash drive to the desktop, the folder should be copied to the desktop layer belonging to your boot volume (your hard drive), and should not have the term "copy" appended to it.
A quick way to verify if such is successful without unmounting a volume to check, is to do a Get Info (Command-I) on the copied folder - the "Where" info line in the Get Info window will tell you which drive the item is on.

  • I can't copy and paste files in finder arrrgghh

Ok im not the most tech savvy person around and this is my first imac, I dont operate windows on it and am stumped. I am trying to transfer my movies onto a media player and external hard drive but it just wont do it. when I just had my previous pc all I had to do was copy and paste and am ready to scream. Does anyone have any answers????

I don't think this is necessarily a disk format problem.  I've been noticing the same thing the past few weeks.  I used to copy and paste files frequently using the Finder but it no longer works.  I have the Copy option in the contextual menu when a file is selected but I no longer have a Paste option after doing the copy.
All mounted drives on my system are formatted Mac OS Extended and the operation fails even when attempting to copy files residing on the boot drive to another folder on the same boot drive.  Digging around for a cause/solution now.
    UPDATE:
The problem in my case was an application called Clipboard Cleaner that strips all formatting from text you copy to the clipboard so you can copy from something like a Word doc and paste into an email without all the Word formatting coming along as well.  It runs in the background and apparently disables the ability to copy/paste files.

  • Old icons remain after changing file type association

I have several video file types in my Movies folder: MPG, MP4, AVI, and MKV.  Many of the file types are automatically associated with Quicktime Player, (despite it being unable to process them, such as the AVIs).  Being unable to play my MKVs at all, I downloaded VLC player to supplement.  I have since grown to like the additional features of VLC, and would like to use it as my player of choice for all movie files.
Changing the file type associations was simple enough, (Get Info -> Open With, Set as default for each file type), however the pre-associated files still retain their original QT icon.
How do I go about batch changing the incorrect QT-associated finder icons for icons that correctly represent their new association with VLC?
    Thanks for reading

I was having that same trouble, but with ".rar" archives (in my case - OS X Yosemite), I tried all ways to solve it, following all kind of tips, like: choosing a new program as default to open the file, app cleaners, terminal commands, disk utility, etc.. but nothing worked. When finally I got problem solved, how I did it: 1) Download the program: Cocktail (http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/), after downloading, I got the message to register it, I simply clicked on "Remind me later". 2) Now, after installing it, configure Cocktail with this short tutorial, exactly as described (http://www.everythingmacintosh.com/tech-notes/maintain-your-mac-with-mac-os-x-co cktail/). After following 2 steps, Cocktail will be configured and will run, in the end your Mac will restart, you can now check that all your archives will be with correct icon (preview/thumbnail). Hope it helps!

  • Cut and paste files by dragging in finder is only possible by giving my password. in the menu bar cmd x is depicted in grey so not available. How to c

I can only cut and paste files in finder (with the mouse) when i give my password at every single action. This is too time consuming of course. The option in the menue bar cmd x is depicted in grey in stead of black, thus not possible. How to solve this? I use the lion version.

Wow, thanks for the tip!  Should've known Apple wouldn't have made it any easier for us to tap this hidden function.
In the meantime I've gone back to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 model, where I use PathFinder as a Finder alternative that allows cutting and pasting, among other features I like (such as enlarging the default sidebar icon sizes in 10.6.8).  My battery life was cut in half with Lion and most of the new features have been supplemented in Snow Leopard by third-party utilities.  The only missing feature is iCloud, but I'm convinced Apple will backhaul this functionality to Snow Leopard at some time.  Otherwise frustrated Snow Leopard users will move to Windows to move up to the cloud!

  • No thumbnails in finder/preview after exporting files as dng out of lightroom?

Does anyone have experience sorting out the issue of no thumbnails in finder/preview after exporting files as dng out of lightroom?
There are several conversations in the forum about this problem, but cant seem to find a solution.
Anyone know how to sort this out?

    Thanks for your reply.
Mac does support previewing dngs in finder and preview. This has not been a problem before (besides when using my fujufilm compact camera, which mac now has updated the Apple camera for).
To answer your Q about dng files. Thats exactly what i do. I have work which involves communicating/transfering multiple lr -edited files to someone else whom further edits in ps. Not only that, I personally use dng as a way of storing my files. I suppose like to keep my files tidy and uniform.
Any mac users out there who has a a solution to my issue with previewing dngs?

Thats a SQLite-DB? Is it possible to access and export them? I´d like to use that Db to assign thumbs to files on my NAS.

Are the thumbnails & icons stored in the .DS_Store-File?
When visible, how can I access the content stored in that file?

    Hello,
Ideally you need to boot from the disk as you have no other media advisable. (e.g your hard drive)
Without some form of system disk or restore you wont be able to diagnose the problem with your hard drive.
By using a Mac OS X system disk you can load up the Disk Utilities and repair the hard drive if shown it's available. If it's not available you would need to replace the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS. Without any disk to support you, you are going to struggle.
You can obtain replacement disk, both retail copies or system disk on the Internet.
If you know what version of Mac OS X you had install (I'm guessing that it would have been 10.3, but would recommend 10.4) A retail disk is normally black with a colored 'X' on it, while system disk are always.
Always try and obtain a copy of the system restore disks (Gray) for your iBook
Ebay is another outlet that has genuine system disk for sell, but like any auction site, it's as and when someone is selling them.
The only other thing you could do is take it to a Apple repair agent who could check the hard drive on your behalf. That way you can get confirmation if the problem is the drive or some other fault. They may even help restore the OS for you.
I can't think of anything else to try without some form of disk to help you.
There maybe just one other small thing you could try.
When booting up, firmly rest your palm of your hand on the iBook next to the tracker pad on the left side.
If it works then it's another fault that I'm aware of.

  • Where can I find Icon files (*.ico) for using in forms

    Q) Where can I find Icon files (*.ico) for using in forms?
Explaination: I am looking for icons for showing them in my application. Like I have an iconic button for 'Data Entry' option on Vertical Toolbar. Then one icon for Reports and Queries and so on. I need some icons which reflect the heading like for 'Data Entry', I would like a person working on a keyboard. For reports I would like to have a person reading a report or something like that.
Can I find such icons on internet or any specific site?
    Pl. guide.
    TIA
    Tariq

There are thousands and thousands of places on the internet to find .ICO files. Just find one with image and size you want, and use it.
Note that if you are using web-deployed Forms, you will need to convert the .ICO file to .GIF or .JPG for runtime. The Forms Builder still uses .ICO files, though.

  • How to fix the " flashing question mark after the finder icon when starting up" withou an apple keyboard?

    Hi
I am wondering How to fix the " flashing question mark after the finder icon when starting up" without an apple keyboard. I have 2 of those .7Ghz emacs so just wanna fix them
    Thx

    Hi,
    >I am using a wireless standard keyboard so maybe the emac doesn't regognise it
Installation of driver software may be required. Do not expect any wireless device to automatically work with a Mac unless guaranteed to do so. In a case like this, use a wired USB keyboard (a PC keyboard should be OK) and a wired mouse to begin with.

With respect, you actually cannot store folders on the left side of the Dock - only on the right side. I wonder if you're talking about Launchpad, which looks like a silver rocket and shows you your installed applications? It's not actually a shortcut to the Applications folder, though. You can certainly drag Launchpad into the left side of the Dock from the Applications folder.

  • Finder Icon Issues With Word '08 docx Files

    Hi all,
I just picked up and installed a copy of Office 2008 on my brand new MacBook, and I'm already seeing an odd, annoying issue. When I save a docx file in Word '08 that's more than one page long, the preview icon for it comes up weird in Finder: it looks sideways, squat and long like a landscape view, whereas every other kind of file I save (including docx files less than a page long) have normal portrait view preview icons. If I save a file at one page long (which looks normal in Finder) then it goes longer than a page, it immediately converts the Finder icon to landscape view when I save. Even when I go into Word's save preferences and turn off the option to save a picture of the document, it STILL does it.
Any ideas for fixing this, my intrepid friends?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I've also been having this problem. I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's got something to do with the page setup/printing defaults. I've spent hours and hours messing and fiddling with settings (I was bored) but I can't figure out a way to fix/get round this.
I know it seems trivial, but it's SOOOOO irritating! Somebody please help!
