Finder in background in Dock

Hi..
I just upgraded to 10.5.8. I tried to move a Dock icon and lost it (no big problem), but now all the other icons have moved to the left, obscuring the Finder. It's there, but just behind (right now) Safari. Every time I try to access the Finder, the other icons move to the left to hide it.
How do I get the Finder back in the open?
Thanks!

reset your dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in. your dock will be reset to the defaults and should work normally.

  • Clumsy user new to Mac - how do I get Finder back into the Dock?

While messing around deleting playlists in iTunes it seems I managed to drag Finder off the Dock and onto the Desktop.
The Desktop version is now completely inactive and the only way to access Finder is to close down every other application first, leaving Finder as the default.
How can I restore Finder to the Dock? Is this even possible? Or am I better off setting up a separate shortcut somewhere else in the system?
    Thanks!

It might be a good idea to backup your photos/music to CD/DVD just in case.
If you navigate to your computer (double-click hard drive)/System folder (blue X)/Library/CoreServices (blue X)/Finder, you can try dragging the Finder app. to the dock to re-create a shortcut.
How does the Finder (desktop, menu bar, dock etc.) behave in your problem account ?

  • How Can I Remove the Finder Icon From the Dock?

Hi! Can someone tell me how to remove the Finder icon from the dock? I don't even care if Finder quits. I just want it removed from the dock. I really don't care if I can't get to my files. Please help.

Start by going to your core services, (/system/library/coreservices). You can do this by pressing Shift+Cmd+G and then paste (/system/library/coreservices), without parentheses.
After doing this, find Dock.app, right click, show package contents. This doesn't contain the icons on your dock, just finder and trash.
After that, move all finder services to the desktop, and then erase them from the core services folder. At this point it will prompt you to put in your password, do so.
Next you'll want to open terminal and type 'killall dock' or, you could restart your computer.
This should remove the finder icon from your dock, while still giving you access to it from your desktop.
    Hope this helps!

  • I'm using a fresh install on 10.10. why when i click the finder icon in the dock a finder window does not open?

i'm using a fresh install on 10.10. why when i click the finder icon in the dock a finder window does not open?

ok, i forced quit the finder, and now when i click on the finder it opens a visible window... where did this bug come from?

  • Finder not opening in dock

When i click the finder application in my dock, it wont open... What do i do?

Do you get a dot or some other indication it is open in the dock?
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for thecom.apple.finder.plist. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Relaunch Finder by loggin out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Strange finder icon in my dock!

I have a strange Finder icon in my dock that looks like it has a glass box over it. I know it definitely is not supposed to look like that. I have tried the following:
    - Restarting
    - Moving Dock from side to side to bottom
    - Changing wallpaper
    - Changing magnification settings

Someone posted this problem a couple of years ago. Doesn't seem like anyone had an answer then.

  • Finder Window Background Colours

I have recently upgraded my old PowerBook G4 to a MacBook 2Ghz - Black.
Setting all my preferences finder window background colours, icon sizes etc for all windows is fine.
I have copied all my image files from the PowerBook to the MacBook, but when I increase the icon sizes for a particular window (selecting this window only) to view image thumbnails better the background colour changes to a bright orange or purple at the same time.
Does anyone have any idea's, I have thought about re-installing OS X again and starting from scratch, but this can't be needed with a Mac can it????????
    Thanks
    Chris

    I can suggest two solutions:
    1) You delete all .DS_Store files from the offending folders. The files are invisible so it is a bit of a chore.
Paste this Applescript in Script Editor and run it, then select your folder to remove all the invisible files I mentioned.
set mountedDisk to POSIX path of (choose folder)
    tell application "Terminal"
if (count of windows) is 0 then do script ""
    delay 0.1
do script "find " & quoted form of mountedDisk & ¬
" -name .DS_Store -delete" in front window
    end tell
    2) Make a new folder and move all your files to that folder.

  • When clicking on the Finder icon in the dock the Main Menu grays out ... what's wrong ... how do I fix?

    Product: iMac, OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
Processor: 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 32 GB 160 MHz DDr3
    Storage: 3.12 TB Fusion Drive
    PROBLEMS:
    1. When clicking on the Finder icon in the dock, the main menu grays out and the window with documents, applications etc., does not pop up.
    2. iMac is not showing up in iCloud.com and, not syncing with my MacBook Pro, iPad Mini and iPhone.
This situation seemed to appear after doing updates on my iMac.
    TROUBLESHOOTING I'VE TRIED:
    1. rebooted,
    2. repaired permissions,
    3. booted in safe-mode and let the basic tests run then rebooted to normal mode. Afterwards, the problem seemed to be corrected, however, it re-appeared shortly thereafter and still exists.

Go to the Finder's General preference pane and reset the New Finder windows show: option.  Try changing it to some other folder, try it and then back again.
If that doesn't jump start it try moving the com.apple.finder.plist file from your Home/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop, reboot and then reset the Finder preferences.
For Mavericks and Yosemite go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

  • Can I move an external hard disk off the finder window, to the Dock or menu bar, for instance?

I use a couple of external hard disks, one with Time Machine for every day back-ups and another for occasional back-ups of large work files and videos I have purchased. It bothers me to see them sitting up there in the top right hand corner of my screen. Can I move them permanently somewhere else, into the Dock or Menu Bar say, and still have them permanently available?

    Yes.
You can drag the drive icon from the desktop into the Dock.
Then you can go to Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop > uncheck External disks, and it should stay in the dock but not show on the desktop.
There are third party apps that will give you Finder-like access to things in your Menu Bar, like  Download XMenu for Mac - Menubar item lists/launches apps, and more. MacUpdate.com  , but I would avoid third party GUI-changing apps like this if I were you, as they tend to be problematic, and install background processes which slow down your mac.

  • Finder -600 error. Can only open Finder in background (open -g /path/) after force quit

    Hey there,
I had multiple instances of finder and it kept relaunching so I force killed it from activity monitor. Now Finder, disk image mounter, and trash are all non functional from the front end and the desktop shortcuts are gone. After that if you tried to open it with the icon on the dock (right click icon > open) or in terminal it gave error code -600, the application "Finder" can't be opened. This is not the same as -10814, which i get only if i try to open it as a bundle (open -b Finder).
I can run Finder in the background using open -g /path/ and the desktop restores and I can get to trash and finder with right clicks from dock icons. =/
And that's all I got. I don't know a whole lot else about the system and I am kind of afraid to restart.
If it matters, I recently had a weird hardware thing where my keyboard, trackpad, and all peripheral usb mice/keyboards would not work and I had to do recovery because recovery mode was the only way I could use my mouse/keyboard.
    Thanks for any insight!

    Do a backup.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • Macbook pro.minimize button is inactive. Finder menu bar and dock won't appear when firefox is open. not occuring with safari. have to click on desktop to get Finder menu bar and dock to reappear. think happens after update of something. How do I fix it?

When i open firefox it opens up full screen (as it always has) but now the minimize button is grey (not yellow) and inactive so i can only open (green button) or close (red button) my firefox window. I can still make it smaller by dragging the bottom right corner but i can't minimize it to my dock or anything. Also, I have my dock set to auto show/hide when i roll my pointer over it. Now, whenever Firefox is open (no matter what size the window is) the Finder menu bar (with the time, battery power, etc) does not show up (which it always has before) and my dock won't auto appear when i roll my pointer over it.

Can you check this issue on Firefox 9?

  • Two finder icons in my dock and other issues

For some reason, in my dock, two finder icons are appearing. The default finder icon, which is not running and has no white indicator under it, and a default application style icon that launches right after login with the label "Finder" which is basically the finder but launches like a third party application?! When I quit the running finder icon, the finder restarts, so this second icon really is running as the finder!
Also: When i click on the trash it no longer opens, when I try to empty the trash from the dock nothing happens, and (this is the best part) when I click and hold on a stack, and select "Show in finder", Entourage launches and tries to compress that folder in an email message. Super bizarre! Like really bizarre.
Please any help would be great before I do something drastic like archive and install.
I have a screenshot of this but can't seem to post it here.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, burbaget.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.5 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • My Finder menu, HD, and dock all disappeared after I mistakenly downloaded a bogus version of Firefox. How do I get them back?

I think I may have gotten some sort of virus after downloading a "bogus"  Free version of Firefox. I uninstalled Firefox immediately, because I noticed my Macbook was acting strangely, but the next time I turned it on, my HD, Finder menu, and dock were all gone! Basically there is now an empty, blue screen. I have booted in safe mode and deleted preferences, but nothing is working.

This probably is the mistake you made.  Many sites that offer application downloads also include adware as an unrequested 'bonus'.  Try AdwareMedic and it should take care of the unwanted ad popups:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
If no success, the use the Apple support procedure, which is a lot more complicated:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987
The lesson is, always download from the developers web site or from the APP store.  That way no unwanted items will not be included.
    Ciao.

  • How do I fix a corrupted Finder icon in the Dock

    Hello,
My Finder icon has spontaneously corrupted in the Dock. The icon of the Finder.app (in the CoreServices folder) is perfectly fine and its icon the Resources folder of the Dock.app is also perfectly fine.
Yet, the icon of Finder is corrupted in the dock as shown here: http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/2973/dockimage.png and in the picture below
    Any ideas, anyone?
    My specs are as follows:

Have you tried removing all files containing com.apple.dock from the Preferences folder in your HOME Library folder and in the ByHost subfolder of the Preferences folder, then restarting the Dock (or logout/login)?
(To get to the home Library folder, hold option key down while using the Finder Go menu, select Library. Or use the "Go to Folder...." option and paste in
    ~/Library/Preferences .)

  • Where can I find iWeb backgrounds?

I want to use the background from the Freestyle template on some print materials. Does anyone know where to find the image files for the backgrounds?
    Thanks!

Have a look at [this post|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6168508#6168508]
You can also save the background after publishing.
In Safari, open the Activity window (Cmd-Option-A), find it in the list of filenames and then Option-Double-click the line to download it.
Or you can open the pagenamefolder after publishing, and find it there.
