Finder in Time Machine doesn't find anything?

Last night I moved my Time Machine backups to a new EHD using the "restore" feature in Disk Utility. Everything seemed to work fine. I'm able to enter Time Machine and reach my oldest backup. I was even able to do a new backup just fine. The problem is (and it's really just annoying, not fatal) that when I'm in Time Machine and search for something in Finder nothing comes up. I put in a word that would be extremely common in my files and there was nothing. Not on the first backup I did on the new drive, not on my most recent backup and definitely not anything further back. Any advice? I have no idea what could be going on.

I would guess that it is not indexed. You can get it to reindex by placing it in the privacy list, waiting a while, and then removing it.

I have been experiencing some networking problems
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have the latest Time Capsule ("TC"), an old Airport Extreme Base Station ("AEBS") bought in 2007 and 2 Airport Expresses, one bought in 3 months ago ("AE-Alpha") and the other bought back in 2007 ("AE-Beta"). All of them have been updated with the latest firmware.
Based on those dates, the AirPort Extreme is probably flat (as opposed to dome-shaped), making it 802.11n-capable. The Newer AirPort Express is probably an 802.11n-capable model A1264, while the older one is probably a model A1084 or A1088.
I use {the TC's} DHCP function ... to avoid unauthorized use.
This a discussion for another thread, but that's not what DHCP is for.
The wireless setting for it is to participate as WDS Main, but after reading various posts, it seems WDS is a bad idea
With that older AirPort Express you're stuck with WDS unless you decide to replace it with a newer model.
The AEBS is currently setup as being a WDS Relay at the moment
Why a relay? That's only needed if there's another base station "beyond" it that is configured to depend on it.
Since the AEBS is connected to the TC via Ethernet, you should probably configure it as a "roaming network":
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2273124
{The AE-Alpha} connects fine as WDS remote at the moment
I don't have any experience with mixed WDS and non-WDS networks, but since it's 802.11n-capable, you may be able to configure it to "extend" the network of the TC rather than as WDS. Look for a setting on the TC to "Allow this network to be extended".
    Physical location:
AEBS in one end, TC and AE-Alpha in the middle while AE-Beta on the other end.
A device such as "AE-Beta" that's supposed to extend a network shouldn't be "at the end" but should be half way between the central base station and the clients that need an extended network.

  • Time Machine doesn't see/find my last backup

I made a fresh, new backup on my Time Capsule 1 week ago, because I had to get my MacBook Pro repaired. I got a new logic board. Now Time Machine doesn't find or see my last backup. But it's definitely on my Time Capsule. I can see the sparsebundle file on the disk. And if I try to do a backup (I had to select my Time Capsule as volume in the settings first...?), it isn't possible because there is not enough space on the Time Capsule. Of course there is not, because my last backup is on it. Time Machine seems to ignore that there is already a backup of my system on the Time Capsule.
    What can I do?
    Thank you very much

DId you get an answer to this? I too have the same problem except that all I did was move, change dsl companies and rehook up the time capsule...and nothing. The sparse bundle is there but whenever I back up it wants to do a whole new backup
    Thank

  • Time Machine doesn't make backups

    Hi,
I have problems with Time Machine. I deleted by error the backup file in Time Capsule, but now Time Machine doesn't create a new one, simply it doesn't work. External disks are recognized (Time Capsule or USB disk) but it doesn't make backups, only appears the "preparing" for one or two seconds and then nothing. It's the same if I try to make backups on a external USB disk.
I can not enter to Time Machine to see the backups.
Looking at "Console" for the last logs there many crash reported, for example:
    18/02/09 11:59:26 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3053] Backup requested by user
    18/02/09 11:59:26 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3053] Starting standard backup

Any one with a similar problem???
Is it possible to reset Time Machine in order to restart the backups?
I bought Time Capsule and I can't use Time Machine!!!!
    Thanks.

    Hello!
Thanks for your message. The Time Machine Buddy widget was helpful. Although I couldn't mark the text, copy and insert it here.
You should be able to highlight them by dragging your mouse over them, then cmd-C to copy to the clipboard, then cmd-V to copy it here.
Event store UUID don't match for Volume: Macintosh HD
This means TM isn't sure whether the last changes to your internal HD got logged to OSX's File System Event Store, a log of all changes that TM can normally use to see what needs to be backed-up. Most commonly caused by an abnormal shutdown.
    Node requires deep traversal:/
Reason: kFSEDBE even FlagMustScanSubDrs /kFSEDBE vent Flag Reason Deep Backup/
Since it can't trust the Event Store, this means it has to examine every file and folder on your HD. Quite a lengthy procedure, of course.
Then it said - I didn't copy that - something like "thinning out" isn't necessary because there was still 368 GB or so space left - 7 GB were backed up - but it did "thin out" some outdated file afterall, whatever that is - hope it didn't delete something I wanted to keep.
All normal. TM automatically deletes it's hourly backups after 24 hours, except the first of the day, which is called a Daily backup. That is kept for a month, when a similar process converts the first of a week into a Weekly backup, and deletes the others.
Only when the disk is near full (TM does need some workspace) will you see deletion of one or more of the oldest weeklies, instead of the first message.
Then the next problem started. It wasn't possible to eject the external drive. I waited for quite some time but each time tried to eject it, a window opened saying that it was still in use and could not be ejected. Although it had defenitely finished doing the backup and the next one was to be done about half an hour later.
Is there anything else on your external drive, besides TM backups? Could you have been looking at it via the Finder, when you tried to eject it?
Try this: de-select the drive (chose the "none" icon) in TM's preferences, then quit System Preferences. Then go back and re-select it. Sometimes this resets TM's lock on the drive.
If not, and it happens again, try turning TM off, then ejecting the TM drive. You shouldn't have to do this -- TM is supposed to let you eject it, then automatically do another backup whenever you re-connect it.
Now that you have a good full backup, just keep an eye on it. Your incremental backups should be very, very quick under normal circumstances.
There are a few things that may cause long backups, such as an abnormal shutdown, certain hardware repairs, not letting TM back up for several days (seems to be about 10, some say), and the use of certain apps. File Vault, Entourage, vmWare, running Windoze are a few. If you do see long backups, post the messages here in a new thread.

  • Time machine doesn't recognize external hard drive

Recently I went to the apple store to get help to switch from Mavericks to Mountain Lion (I had some problems with Mavericks). They used time machine to bring back my applications (from my external hard drive, LaCie) on the Mountain Liion software. They said my time machine/external hard drive should work the same when I got home. Now, when I go to back up my computer, time machine doesn't recognize that I've backed up my files before. In the past, when time machine was working, every time I plugged in my hard drive the icon for it would turn blue, time machine recognized it, and it would back up my files. Now, the icon for the hard drive shows up, but time machine doesn't recognize it.
    Some other things:
    - when I open my external hard drive on finder, it shows all of my previous back ups
    - I used disk utility to check my hard drive and macintosh HD - both are OK
How can I use time machine to continue backing up files? Or am I going to have to partition or erase the hard drive and start a new back up?
    Thank you in advance

nevermind! time machine suddenly recognized the disk after half an hour. sorry, I don't know how to delete this post!

  • Replaced internal hard drive, time machine doesn't recognize as same volume

    Howdy,
The hard drive (call it drive "X") on my iMac (one of the 2005 models) was dying so I had it replaced. I rebuilt the new drive (drive "Y") from my most recent time machine backup (from external drive "A"). I am now having problems with one of my backup devices, in that time machine doesn't recognize that the new disk is conceptually the same thing that had been backed up before (same volume name).
More details... I rotate my backups monthly through three external drives (I store the most recent offsite). After the disk replacement and restore process, I continued to use that backup drive (drive "A") without noticing any problem. Then it came time to rotate my external drives, and time machine doesn't find enough space on the next backup drive (drive "B"). Presumably this is because it doesn't realize that the drive I am backing up ("Y") is a copy of the drive that had previously been backed up on "B" ("X").
Is there any way to convince it they are the same? Or am I in the same boat as this poster:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2770362&tstart=0
Basically I just want to verify that I am in that same boat before I remove old backup files on "B". If I do decide I need to remove those, are the instructions linked in thread 2770362 correct, or are there better ones?
    Thanks for any help,
    Bob H

Actually, the backup I deleted above was the backup for the new internal drive. Apparently TM had created the (incomplete) backup during the failed attempt that ran out of space on the backup device. Since the new internal drive had the same name as the old internal drive, I didn't initially realize that's what I was deleting. Not that deleting it causes any harm, but it didn't address the original problem of freeing up space on the backup device.
Not to worry though. I've figured out how to get at the backups for the old internal drive, and am in the process of deleting those. I was about to follow the instructions in your troubleshooting items E3 and E2, but upon attempting to enter time machine I stumbled into the right place. Since I had previously told TM to do no backups (because there was still not enough disk space), and since I'd left the backup device connected, when I pulled up the TM menu from the menu bar, the usual "Enter Time Machine" menu was replaced by "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" (or perhaps "Disks" was "Backups"). This then gave me a list of the machines that I'd backed up on this backup device (in my case machine names and internal drive names are the same). Of course one of those was for the old internal drive, and after choosing it I roughly followed the same course of action as I did a few days ago, to initiate deletion.
I also saw how I could delete each of those old backups individually, but decided against that as I did not expect it would free up enough space. My expectation is that nearly all the space is shared among all the backups for the same source drive, since relatively very little changes between backups.

  • HT203177 Time machine doesn't recognize my hard drive archive

I have time machine archive on a hard drive (not time capsule). It recently stopped backing up. On checking, time machine recognizes the hard drive (in preferences it is listed as the back up drive.) The files appear to be present on looking into the drive, but Time Machine doesn't recognize that there are backup files there, it wants to complete another full backup. Meaning - it says for latest backup: "none".
I am afraid if I do another full backup, I will lose the ability to access the older backups.
When I try to access older files through time machine, it predictably cannot find them.
How do I tell Time Machine that the files on that hard drive are the backup files?

    Update:
    1) Right click on TM icon - Menu choice "Browse other TM disks" allows me to see the data - i.e. it is a valid TM archive, not corrupted.
    2) Looking at TM preferences immediately after showed the proper disk was targeted, but still Latest backup: None.
    3) Shut down, anomalous shut down -required power button hit. (AHH - the problem??)
    4) restart using command  - R  works - i.e recognizes the disk and emergency recovery system software
    5) Restart - Still shows latest backup: None
    6) trying to access data through standard TM startup shows data now.
    7) go back to preferences - still no backup shown.
Aside - I can't recall what the purple vs white dates on right side of the screen signify, and can't find it in the documentation right now. Anybody know?

  • Time Machine doesn't see MyBook Live NAS.

I just got a new SMC-D3GNV gateway from Comcast and now Time Machine doesn't see my NAS MyBook Live. I can access all my files on the MyBook Live via finder. Also, all software/firmware is current. Any idea's?

    mwithers wrote:
I know variations on this question have been asked many times before, but I've just read many of those threads, and I don't see an answer.
Time Machine does not see my La Cie Network Space NAS and neither does Disk Utility (the La Cie support pages imply that it should, believe it or not).
If your Mac can contact the NAS, it should appear in a Finder sidebar (if your Finder preferences are set for that). If you can set Time Machine up to back up to it, it will create a +sparse bundle+ on it. That sparse bundle, when mounted, will appear in Disk Utility's sidebar, and you can do a +*Repair Disk+* on it. Otherwise, no, Disk Utility won't see network drives.
Does not matter if it is connected via WiFi or directly through ethernet. I suspect this means that it is not Mac OS extended formatted, and not formattable (by Disk Utility) either.
Correct; Disk Utility can't format a network drive.
Review the LaCie specs and setup instructions carefully. My quick read on their site does not turn up any claim that it's Time Machine compatible, though.
    Can you return it?

  • Time machine doesn't backup regularly

Since upgrading to Lion from OS X 10.6.8, I find that Time Machine doesn't backup regularly. If I'm away from home (where the Time Capsule resides) for a day and return home, TM used to start backing up as soon as I connected my MBP to my home network, but it doesn't do this anymore. Furthermore, even though TM indicates that a backup will occur at a certain time, this doesn't happen, and the backup time gets postponed another hour.
    What could be wrong?

I'm making an assumption here... but your post doesn't have a ton of detail about your setup so...
It probably has more to do with the fact that you actually shouldn't be backing up a mysql database with time machine if the database is running/live (Of which Time machine has no idea about any of this).
You can't backup open database just like that and it doesn't only apply to time machine. You need to first be doing a dump of the database either manually or with an automated script and then you could allow time machine to backup the dump. You're asking for trouble and behavior similar to what you noticed here if you backup a mysql (or any other open database) in this manner. This includes the LDAP database if this machine is an OD master and cyrus database if you run the OS X mail server (pre 10.6).
Just an FYI that it is quite likely that time machine backed up the files in question but that the database was probably damaged or missing data for the reasons I mentioned above.
There are tools out there that can automate this process (mysql website itself has a Mac GUI client that can do automated backups).

  • Time Machine doesn't see my NAS?

Well after talking on the phone will Apple about the AirPort Extreme's USB port "connection failed." every day. I was told that Time Machine is NOT supported with the AirPort Extreme and that I should get a NAS.

That is correct.  See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

Just because it says it's compatible doesn't mean it is, unfortunately.   And, some NASs that were compatible with Time Machine on Snow Leopard didn't get updated for Lion's tighter security requirements.
So, first, check with the maker to be sure it's compatible with TM on Lion (they may have an update).
Then, be sure you're following their setup instructions exactly.  Each NAS has it's own mini-operating system, that interacts with OSX, and they all do it differently (even some made by the same company don't do it the same way!).

  • HT3275 Time Machine doesn't see the back-up disk

Time Machine doesn't see the back-up disk after I've logged off and then back on, even though the disk is available to the iMac 24/7. Turning the disk off and then on in the current session works, but this seems to defeat the purpose of an unattended back-up disk. I can't find a setting that ensures the back-up disk is recognized after log-in or restart. Is there a solution?

    Is this Mountain Lion??
It seems to have made some changes that make the disk drop out.. it does this even if you are continually connected to the TC and we don't have a solution yet.
For your login issue, is the TC using a disk password.. or are you setting it to default? Could you try just turning on the guest account in the TC to read and write access and see if this helps. Tell us how it goes.
There is another fix.. but it involves using disconnect all users from v5 airport utility.. Apple removed the function in v6.
If you are on Lion or Mountain Lion even you can install the v5 utility.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

    Annoying!

Regarding time machine, it probably took a full backup after you put mavericks on. To investigate, open Console, select "All Messages" and type "backup" (without the quotes). It will then only show you backup-related messages. If you're not sure how to read those, copy them and paste them into a reply here; we can investigate the situation.

If you want files to use later.. do not use TM.
