Finder insists on opening new windows behind current window

A new behavior of Finder (10.5.5) started this morning, and it's annoying as heck:
Every time I double-click a folder, the new window appears behind the source window. The new window has the same view characteristics as it did when it was closed (size, view, sort order, etc.), but it's "one behind" the window containing the folder I double-clicked.
Thing to note:
Sometimes, changing the view of the folder, closing it, and reopening it will cause it to open on top again. Sometimes not.
Deleting all of the .DS_Store files with "sudo find . -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;" from my home directory did not affect the behavior.
That I can tell, I have not changed anything on my machine in the last 24 hours.
This happens with folders which are on shared drives (even ones where I have no write permissions, so no .DS_Store possibility) and local drives.
As LOLcat would say, HALP!
Thanks,
Bill

Turns out, it was a new mouse on the USB. I had the double-click speed set to its fastest position (in the Mouse/Keyboard System prefs), and the net result was that double-clicking was, for some reason, acting like a triple-click, the third click bringing the first window to the fore.
Dell mouse problem? Mouse/Keyboard System prefs problem?
Dunno', but I'm glad that problem's gone.

  • Every finder folder clicked opens new window

I own a late 2011 13" Macbook Pro, which I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and also Bootcamped with a proffessional version of Windows 7.  When I first got it, I had downloaded a Preference Pane called "Secrets" which opened up some more technical and deep settings menu where you could choose more options.  Their website is here: http://secrets.blacktree.com.  Unfortunately, I clicked an option once that made every folder clicked a new window.  So when in icon view, or list view, every new item I click becomes a window.  I know this isn't standard because my friends early 2011 MBA running Lion does no such thing.  I uninstalled the pref pane long ago, and didn't notice it until recently.  It isn't a horrible issue, but simple tasks get really annoying.  After reinstalling the pref pane and searching for an option, there is no such thing.  Can somebody figure out a way out of it? My buddys laptop closes the previous window after an icon is clicked.  It's really annoying when getting to my homework folder leaves my screen looking like this.
    Any help is appreciated.

Click on the Desktop. Go to the menu at top. Click on "Finder" and go down to "Preferences."
In "Finder Preferences," click on "General."
In General, UNcheck "Always open folders in a new window."
    Hope that helps.

  • Tiger refuses to open new windows in columns view ?!?

What might be the problem when the finder refuses to open new windows in column view?
What ever I do with preferences, new folders are always opening in icon view.
It is very frustrating when dragging files to the folder inside other folder, where in column view they should be in alphabetical order, and destination folder should be easily found, but in icon view, they are in what-so-ever order, and the changes of placing files accidently to the wrong folder is multiplied.
The workflow is always more or less disturbed with this, so that creativity is not the the adjective that is mentioned to describe the working with these machines.
Is there anything that could be done?
This same problem occurs similarily in both of my Macs G4 PowerBook and G4 MDD PowerMac.

    Hello,
Trash the Finder preference file: com.apple.Finder.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
    See if that helps...
    If not, then perhaps it's a good time to check the boot disk for errors;
If not, shut down the Mac(s). Now, press the power button, hold down the C key, and insert the restore disk all at the same time. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo. An Installer window will open but DO NOT proceed with any installations, instead from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. In the DU window, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab and click: Verify If DU reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk and select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
If you don't have your restore disk you could try booting in Safe Mode. Go here for instructions:

  • Finder won't stay selected if other programs open and can't open new window

I have just noticed a new problem. If other programs are open, Finder won't stay selected program. If I alt tab to it or click on it in dock, it shows on menu bar for a half second and goes away. If I right click on icon in dock and select open new window, it will not do so. If I select a folder from the desktop, it opens in Finder with no problem and I can move within the Finder at will.
I have updated all software. I am running the current Macbook Pro 15in. No other problems noted so far.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Hi Sleddaddyfro, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Do you have another account you can log into?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Stuffit AVR has been a big one, if you have that use the Pref Pane to turn it off, but others have been implicated too. Check System Preferences for a Stuffit Pref Pane and disable AVR.

  • Finder always opens new windows

Finder always opens new windows for me. It didn't used to do this (its been doing it at least since I was using 10.5.6), and "Preferences > Always open folders in a new window" is not checked. Any ideas?

    JRokeach,
Sorry if this sounds to simple, I'm hoping that it is, but in a finder window do you have the toolbar showing? Because if you don't it will open all the folders in there own windows. To fix there is a little button in the top right that hides the toolbar, also if you goto view hide toolbar it will do the same.
If that isn't the case try removing the com.apple.finder.plist found in Macintosh HD -> Users -> YOUR USER -> Library -> Preferences, and trashing it.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • How to stop Finder from opening new windows to view contents of folders.

I have 2 folders on my desktop, called "Home" and "Work." Both are aliases to files stored in user/documents on my HD. Both contain many folders within folders within folders and, ultimately, documents. When I double click on the "Home" desktop alias, a finder window opens showing contents. When I click on any folder within that window, it does what I want it to...switches to the contents of that folder (within same window, without opening a new one.) This works for everything in that folder.
When I double click on a folder within the "Work" folder, however, it opens a new window at every level. By the time I get to the document I want, I may have 5 or 6 windows open, which I then have to manually close.
I have gone into Finder/Preferences/General and the "Always open new window" box is NOT checked. Any one know why it would still be doing this? (No new applications are opening when I click on the folders, just a new finder window.) And why would it do it for one desktop folder and not the other?
I looked through discussions till my head spun and only saw the Finder/Preferences fix, so I'm hoping there's another fix, like a preference file somewhere that I just need to trash. Any help would be appreciated.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I don't know if this is the problem, but for windows in "Icon" or "List" view that are set so that the "Toolbar" is not showing, a folder opened within that window will tend to open a new window. This is just a difference in behaviour between the two modes. To show / hide the toolbar, try clicking the elongated button in the upper right corner, in the "titlebar" of the window, or choose "Show Toolbar" / "Hide Toolbar" from the "View" menu.
Additionally, a workaround might be to switch to "Column" view ("View" > "as Columns" ⌘3), since opening a folder within a window in "Column" view does not appear to spawn a new window, even with the "Toolbar" hidden. Another option might be to hold down the "option" key while opening the folder - this causes the previous window to close as the new window is opened.

  • Why does Firefox keep opening new Windows rather than a new Tab in the current window?

I have " Open a new Tab in the current Window" select in Preferences.
Why then does this version (Version 4) keep opening new Windows, rather than new Tabs in the current Window.
This feature worked fine in 3.6.1.3, but in Version 4, it is a frigging pain in the rigging!
C'mon, Mozilla - time for an URGENT update ...

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.

  • Cmd-click in finder on title bar opens new window - why?

This is a feature I used all the time previously, but since I've updated to 10.5.2 it always open a new window when I select a dir further back. Does anybody know how I can make it not open a new window, just navigate in the existing window?

..."cmd-click in finder on title bar opens new window"...
Holding down the cmd key while opening a folder in the "Finder" has caused the folder to open in a new window for quite some time. I can't recall what the behaviour was with respect to the Titlebar in earlier OS X versions, but if it has really changed in 10.5, perhaps it was to make it more consistent with the behaviour of folders in general.
Are you sure you weren't using ctrl-click in the past?

  • Finder Windows always open new windows when clicking subfolders

since i upgraded to 10.5.6, my finder windows only open new windows when I click on a subfolder. this is no matter what I do with the setting in preferences.
Also, my finder windows no longer display the side bars with folder icons.
I searched my library (and whole computer) for the finder preferences .plist file and can't find it. (was going to delete it and re-create it).
    Any ideas here?

    Thanks for the star.
The default of Finder’s Find will not search that folder, but you can change the pulldown menu just beneath where it says Search, from Kind to System files by selecting Other from that menu and then scroll down the next window and check the box next to System files. You’ll then need to change the pulldown menu next to that to “include” instead of “don’t include.”
The next time you do a search using Find, that pulldown menu will have System files as an option, if you think you might want to search for something in your home folder.

  • Links opening new Windows

Is there a global setting that controls whether links in Portal
open new IE Windows. I know how to edit this attibute for URL
items in content areas, but our portal pages and portlet links
have recently began to open new windows without any explanation.

    iBod:
Thanks! That did indeed solve the problem. I knew the solution was simple, I just couldn't find the right "Preference" to adjust. It is certainly non-intuitive to have it under the "Tabs" preference panel -- I must have looked right at it and dismissed it as not relevant to my problem. I have now marked this question as "Solved."
    Mulder:
I have given tabs a try -- many times. It just isn't my style. Now with this preference properly adjusted, I vastly prefer using windows-style browsing. Also, I can scroll through all the open windows in a breeze using "Command-tilde (~)", which is like riffling the pages of a magazine. Very convenient. Another problem with tabs is that all open pages have a tab visible in the top window, which means that anyone seeing the screen can see the names of all currently open Web pages. In my work environment, that is not acceptable -- I only want the top window to be visible at any given time, as it would be a security issue if random passersby walking behind my work area could see exactly which windows I have open at a particular time. In any case, I marked your answer as "Helpful" as well, since the question was already "Solved" by iBod's answer, which was posted first here chronologically.

  • Some programs open new window instead of new tab in open window

Firefox 17.0.1. I have the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" set, I use the Tree Style Tab 0.14.2012111201 addon (and others unrelated to tabs or windows), and I have multiple profiles. It seems that since I started using multiple profiles some programs (MediaMonkey's help, for example) insist on opening a new Firefox window. If I select any of the one or more currently open profiles it says "Profile in use". Some programs that want to open an internet site to show their help files do open a tab in the current browser window, as expected and desired. But more programs cause the Choose a profile box to display.

Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).
If you need to have more than one profile open at the same time then start subsequent instances with the -no-remote command line switch.<br />
You can not send links from other programs to a Firefox instance that is started with the -no-remote switch.
In such a case you need to drag links in a Firefox window or paste the link in the location bar.

Please give me the solution so that I can stay on the screen and can continue with that screen after opening new browser window.
Currently after opening new window as mentioned above, I can't do anything. If I press ok button then it will give me login page and if I press cancel button then my screen component's state become invalid.

After changing it as some max seconds, it is working fine.
