Finder is creating "conflicted copy"s of files. What is this all about?

My finder is creating "conflicted copy"s of files on our network. We have 9 mac's (a law firm) and it appears that when another person opens a file, Mac sometimes creates a "conflicted copy". does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to prevent this? I like nice neat folders and files and this is messin with my mojo!

The what is happening is that you are editing the files at two locations but Dropbox isn't syncronising them and ends up with two different copies.

Confirming, indexing, creating peak file. What's this all about?

Althought I'm new to PrPro (see my very first post, it was the that I just started using this app), premiere already ate me that anywhere I go, when it comes to video editing, I am in its belly. But still I want an explanation regarding (again) about this message that's appearing in the status bar: 'conforming ?????.mpg". I don't really understand what's this all about. A little explanation is a lot to me. But what I am concerning about this thing is, it seems to be endless. PrPro had done already on all of my assets, conforming, creating peak files, indexing, but it still keeps on doing it again and again. Is there a problem with my audio/video files?
During the first time of my use, I didn't mind. I didn't even notice it. But now I started to be concerned with it since I my pc really slows down when PrPro starts this seemingly perpetual activity. If there's a problem somewhere else please help me.

Did you notice that you make the same mistake as one of our regulars here, the_wine_snob, otherwise known as Bill Hunt, in leaving out one 'a' in my last name? I'm not offended but wonder if that is a human trait to not overdo it and two 'a'-s may be too much?
I resemble that comment! Harm, you have to realize that I am from Mississippi, and everyone is known as Billy Bob, Joe Bob, or Bubba. We had no Harm Millaards - too many double vowels and consonants for us. At least this helped, when I signed up for a bunch of X-rated sites, as Harm Millard...
OK, where were we? LameTiger (check that spelling, as I think I got it wrong again and apologize profusely), when one has non-standard footage, three thing need to happen: the files need to be indexed, the Audio must be Conformed (CFA files) and the Waveform Display (PEK) files must be created. Depending on the number of files, their Duration and one's computer's speed this can take from moments, to maybe 20 mins.
If you have not just loaded up this Project, then gone for a cup of coffee, or tea, I urge you to do so. There is a tiny progress bar in the very lower-right of the GUI, that traces this. Let it happen, and be patient. I know that this sounds like a scene from the Karate Kid, but it's important. Many systems will crash, if one tried to do anything, before this process completes. I can work (albeit slowly), during the process. Many cannot.
Now, if you HAVE patiently waited this process out, and it has completed, AND the next session yields the exact same thing, then something is not quite right. Could be files getting moved, deleted, or otherwise not available to PrPro, or some setting in one's Scratch Disks, or some other problem.
Hope that a bit of patience, and a cup of Darjelling helps. Please let us know.

"iTunes Library file cannot be saved". What is this all about?

At regular intervals, when using iTunes, I will click on something, for example the search box and a box will appear saying "the iTunes Library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough privileges for this operation". Can anyone tell me what this is all about? It doesn't seem to have any adverse effect, but it is very annoying.

Well, I"m on a Mac and have the same issue and have not updated to the latest iTunes. I'm still on 8.2.0. The "cannot save iTunes library file" message just started out of the blue more or less when I was trying to figure out why downloads to my iPhone took so long to finish all of a sudden. I moved the preferences file to the desktop so it would create a new one and it was after that that I started getting the message. Now it occurs every time I remove a podcast or make any changes to the library list. Between that annoyance and having to reboot my computer every time I want to update my iPhone because that's the only way to get it to make the sync without it crawling like a snail, I find I"m getting really fed up with the whole thing. There are so many of us with the same problem that you'd think Apple would address it and fix it.

The videos I attempt to download from a certain website come in a file named 'gallery.php' which I cannot convert; what's this all about?

I follow the usual procedure: right-click on the the video I want to download, and then hit 'Save Link As'. The download then proceeds; but I do not know how to convert the so-called 'gallery.php' file into anything viewable. The website has been of no help whatsoever!

Are you trying to print or to save the doc? Whether you have a working printer or not is really immaterial. If you're trying to print, then File > Print > PDF > Save as PDF…. How to create a copy of a file

Is there a method in Java API with which I can create a copy of a file (like running "copy" or "cp" at system command prompt), so that I don't have to use InputStream and OutputStream and create the new file byte by byte?

I would never create an array with the size of the input file. What do you do, if the file is 2GB?
I'd rather use buffered streams: BufferedInputStream in = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream("inputfile.dat"));

out.close();I'm not sure if using an array to read from a BufferedInputStream really improves performance, but you can play around with it. If you know you have big files, you might want to play with the size of the buffer for the streams as well and see how it affects read/write performance. Setting a larger buffer then the default 64K for the output stream might speed up things.

No. This is NOT true. I've been battling with this for a couple hours.
I choose Export>Versions
choose
Subfolder Format: Project Name
no custom subfolder
Name Format: Current Version Name.
Aperture creates project folders for each image and names them Projects1, Projects2, Projects3 etc.
To be sure, I have no project named Projects

This particular Aperture library has 16 projects. you can see in the screen grab it's created more than 30 folders
If I uncheck the Subfolder, that is say NONE, I just get images and images and images, not in their project folders (of course, because I've said NONE, so why would it put them in project folders?)
I just want to export the entire library and have the versions placed in folders named by the projects from which they came.... ez enough, no?

If you do not have a local copy of a song which you have purchased (i.e. it is available via iTunes in the Cloud), you may need to redownload it before you can transfer it to your device. You may find the following article helpful:

You'll have to do it by process of elimination. Sign into the iTunes Store through the App Store app, go to the Purchased section, and look at the list of apps purchased through your own Apple ID. Anything on your iPhone not in that list isn't yours and should be deleted. The same process would apply to content from the iTunes Store.
Or you can just restore the iPhone from your most recent backup and then redownload everything from the iTunes Store. But if you have a lot of apps or content, that obviously wlll be slow.
I updated my iphone by his ID , is it still problem?
That's probably how you got your friend's purchases. It won't be an issue for iOS, but it is an issue for those apps and content.

A few other questions:
What is the file size? (there is a 100 MB limit)
What is the original doc type of the pdf?
What are you converting it to? excel? word?

I Downloaded a file(QT) The other day... it plays for a short time and then stops. it does not get to the end of the file... and then other time when i download it i get the following message.. " the buffer had been detected(then it names the QT program and where it is on my HD) then it goes on to tell me that it has corrupted the internal state of the program and then it tells me that it cannot continue and must be shut down"
i have uninstalled and re installed same thing... other files work but this one does not.... i have also gone to major sites(yahoo) and there it is.. the big question mark(when they have a movile trailer or something to look at....
does anyone have any ideas?

I only use my PC for a few tasks each week and both Flash and QuickTime seem to not cause any troubles when I browse using IE 7 on it.
QuickTime 7.1 may have been the first release that acknowledged the Flash security issues and Apple "turned off" Flash media in any default install (local files or web based files).
The "browser" options for Flash Media have always been set to "off" in any QuickTime install so end users must have "enabled" it via the QT Control Panel. It's found in MIME Settings (version 6) or File Types in version 7.
An "additional" layer of security is that, in version 7.1.3, Flash media is also disabled by default install of QuickTime (both browser and local files) and PC and Mac users must "enable" Flash media (Control Panel or System Preferences) before Flash formats can be viewed in any QuickTime Player window or in any browser.
QuickTime 4 introduced Flash media to QuickTime (back when it was owned by Macromedia). Now that Adobe has purchased out Macromedia Flash support in QuickTime may move from its current limits of "version 5, or lower" to more recent releases of Flash.
Since I regularly use Flash media in many of my QuickTime files I welcome Adobe's purchase and look forward to a better partnership and more features for QuickTime Pro users.

Opening .psd file automatically creates a copy of that file on the desktop.

The file doesn't open in Photoshop by default. Instead, it copies the file. The only way I can open the file in Photoshop is if I right-click the file and choose "Open With" – Photoshop for it to actually open in the program.
This is a very weird occurrence. Has this happened to anyone before? Any ideas of how to solve this?

I tried the "copy bookmarks" Firefox file open selectied Menu all bookmarks clicked 'file open' and got notheing

Although I use Firefox as my principle browser I sometimes want to use Safari on my traveling Macbook. Is ther any way I can copy my FF bookmarks either to the Safari (can understand if not) or to a text file to use as reference??

Why can't you simply print a photo in iPhoto? It wants me to create a "theme" first? What's that all about?

When I try to print in iPhoto it won't let me print without creating a "theme" first. Is there any way you can just print? I don't want a theme, I just want to print!

"themes" are simply print protocols. Yes you can have some layout, but plain is also theme. At a wild guess you're getting a "no theme installed message"?
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.
