Finder is dying on me consistantly, reboots won't help.

This problem began this morning when I was at the library reading some articles on Slashdot.
Basically, the macbook behaves like it has a crashed program. The finder locks up, so I appleoptionesc to force quit the apps, however, nothing shows up in this window. Right clicking on icons in the dock shows they aren't "not responding" but they wont close.
I try to reboot, but it wont finish closing down apps to allow me to restart.
So what I do is force power down the mac, and for a while it wouldn't make the startup sound, it is now making it (if that is relevant).
As it is now, every time i start the system up it will lock up right after everything launches. I can get programs to open until it locks, and, for instance, if firefox is running when it locks up, I can still use the application (like right now). But it will act like its frozen when i try to close it and will be unable to close/force quit it.
I am very frustrated and I would like to know if anyone knows what my problem is... I am very bummed by this.. I have exhausted my option and I have no idea.

Restart your Mac and while it is booting, Zap the Pram by holding down the Command + Option + P + R keys. Continue to hold them down until the Mac restarts 3 times and you get the boot chime, then release the keys.
When you are fully booted, go to Applications/Utilities and run Disk Utility. Click on your boot drive in the list on the left hand side, then click on the "Repair Permissions" button and sit back or go get a cup of coffee and let your OS check all of your files for proper permissions (takes 10 or 15 minutes).
Download and install the full 10.5.2 Combo update from Apple - even if you have already run the smaller version through Software Update (although your info says you are running 10.5.1) - and then Repair Permissions again.
If none of this works, and you have added ram to your machine since you bought it, remove any new ram module and see if it works better, even if it will be slower. If that fixes your problem, buy new ram.

    another stange thing is also happening, a folder labled adobe illustrator can not be deleated and there is a suspicious file inside it entitled legal and then tieng viet i don't know what nto do

    This file appears to contain the Vietnamese licence agreement for Adobe Illustrator; the special characters in its name prevent any standard method of deleting the file from being used. Run the Disk Utility from a Mac OS X 10.4 installation disk and use the Repair Disk option on your hard disk; when done, try deleting the file again.

    Hello, whenever I clicked on Machelp, one of the page I visited have an icon missing, and the page keep on flashing, I have to click go button and revisited the page, it will then stopped flashing the page, I tried to reinstall mac tiger also won't help, update the os will bring to a reboot.Any comments or any kinds of suggestions are very much appreciated.     Here is information on "partitioning" ...
    Use Disk Utility to partition a disk into sections, or "volumes," each of which works like a separate disk. You might want to partition a disk so that you can have different versions of the Mac OS, or organize your information in a logical manner.
    Partitioning a disk erases all the files on the disk. If you have any files on the disk you want to save, be sure to make a copy of them on another disk before you partition the disk.
    You cannot partition the disk that you started up from. If you want to partition the startup disk, you must restart your computer using your Mac OS X Install disc, as described below. Because partitioning will erase your hard drive, you should back up your hard disk before proceeding.
    To learn more about using Disk Utility, open Disk Utility, in the Applications/Utilities folder, and choose Help > Disk Utility Help.
    To partition your startup disk:
    Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.
    When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    When the Installer appears, choose Utilities > Disk Utility.
    Select your disk from the list, and click Partition.
    Select how you want to partition the disk and any options you want, then click the Partition button at the bottom of the window.
    Quit Disk Utility.
    When the Installer opens again, you can install Mac OS X on one of the partitions.

    Also, Disk Utility can tell you exactly how much available drive space you have. Launch DU, in the panel on the left select MacintoshHD. (Don't select the drive manufacture name above it).. now, look at the botom right side of that window where it says; Capacity - Available.
    Another quick way to check available hard drive space is to open any Finder window, look at the bottom of the window, it will have the information there.
    And, click a clean spot on your Desktop, you'll see Finder in the Menu. Then click View/Show View Options. When the pane opens, click "Show Item Info".
    Now look over at your Hard Drive icon, under it will be that information all the time. Easy way to keep an eye on it.

    Honestly i cannot remember sorry, i got it like 5 maybe 6 yrs ago and just started downloading things to it as the memory on the computer started filling up and when i wanted to see photos/videos on my TV.
    My wife did tell me after i had written this post that she did try and record TV to it as it was plugged in. I think by doing so somehow has deleted everything.   It reads on my TV yet has no files in it but won't show up on my computer. hope this helps.
    Starting to think it is going to cost more to retrieve files on it than it will be to buy a newer and larger one.

    Jonz,?I also am a newbie and I joined to look for people with your Zen Micro headset problem, so I could pass on the help I got. When you read below, you will know why Creative won't help you--Too much to admit!!!. The below web site provides guidance on how to probably fix the problem you have. I just fixed my daughters after finding this fix. When you open up your Zen, you won't believe how cheap the soldering is on both the Headset and the USB connection points. It appears to be generic the 6GB Micro. So, its not IF your Headset won't work, its just WHEN. These are not electrical connections, but rather connections that keep both Headset and USB pieces from moving on the circuit bd. There are 8 total. On my daughter's Zen, one of the four on the Headset module was just sort of laying on top of its mounting point, letting the Headset connector move a lot on the board, as if no solder was installed at all. The other 7 looked they were just glued down--waiting to come loose. Two things not mentioned in the fix.
    . When you take the metal casing out of the plastic cover, you may encounter two small cotter pins (not mentioned in the article). Instead of finding where they came from, I just reassembled the unit without them. No problem. 2. One of the Heaadset solder points (for me the one that was completely loose) is mid-on-the-board in between the?Headset and USB?connectors.
    The soldering iron adaptor I had would not?reach the point without melting all the Headset plastic and?possibly frying the Headset connection beyond repair. Had to buy a Radio Shack circuit board soldering iron?for about $8 with a narrow shaft and?long tapered point to reach the point. Fix went perfectly. Good luck.
