Finder is not correctly reporting available disk space

finder is not correctly reporting available disk space
my drive is 50% full but finder shows there is only @ 35% left
the difference is more than anything needed by the system
any ideas on what is causing the problem?

Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Available disk space keeps changing, sluggish operation

This is a continuation of my previous post. Upon restarting the computer and navigating in the finder, I noticed that the available disk space on my machine changes every few seconds, it seems to go up and down a range of about 500 mb every few seconds or so. Any idea at all what could be causing this and/or a potential solution?

These discrepancies in disk space may be due to Mac OS X using your hard drive as virtual memory. Sluggish operation is generally due to paging in and out of virtual memory. The solution to both problems would be to install more RAM.

  • Available disk space not correct

    I'm using a MacBook Pro (March 2011) running 10.6.8.
I just deleted (technically backed up to an external raid and then deleted from the system disk) about 8gb worth of files.
However, in Finder and in Disk Utility, it shows 1.96GB available.  That number is up a little and for awhile at least, was growing.
I'm also experiencing this same problem on an external USB drive.  I deleted about 3 gb worth of files, but the available disk
    space hasn't increased.
I'm coming from the PC world, where, if you delete a bunch of stuff, the free disk space magically increases to show the correct amount.
    What gives?
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Thanks.
I thought about that but a Genius at a local Apple store told me that whatever's in the Trash doesn't impact the total free disk space.
I suppose this means not all the Genuises (Geni?) are Geniuses?
    Thanks,

  • Unable to install SCCM roles - reporting not enough available disk space on to complete this operation

    Hi.
I am having a strange problem with my SCCM 2012 R2 installation running on Windows Server 2008 R2.
I am not able to add any new roles to the server.
Event log reports: "Product: Application Web Service -- There is not enough available disk space on  to complete this operation. Installation requires at least 10MB free disk space."
awebsvcMSI.log reports: "Product: Application Web Service -- Configuration failed."
    and

I have three disks in the server.
C: (OS) ~8.7 GB free space
D: (SCCM) ~7.69 GB free space
E: (data) ~52.4 GB free space
I have NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS files on C: and D:. I tried removing it from D: and restarting the server without any effect.
Does anyone have a solution to this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Available disk space is not right!

My 800MHz PowerPC G3 iBook running OS 10.3.9 reports 4.3GB available when I open up the harddisk drive icon. When I choose View/List from the drop down menu and give enough time to calculate all the folder sizes and add up the reported size for each folder the sum comes to only about 7GB or so. This can't be quite right. I have emptied the trash so there's nothing there. Software Profiler reports my Hard disk to have a capacity of 27.94GB. So where are the other 15-16GB? I'd really li to know.

really I'd rather spend the time doing something else!
I suggest you do just that, Sergio. The Finder will report the size of visible files and folders only. Quite a bit is occupied by invisible files (including virtual memory swap files).
The available disk space reported by the Finder is correct. It's amount will vary depending on numerous factors, including how long the computer has been up.
If you're that interested in looking at all the files on your hard disk, fire up Terminal and enter the following command:
    <code>defaults write com.apple.finder ShowAllFiles TRUE</code>
    and relaunch the Finder.
To revert back replace <code>TRUE</code> with <code>FALSE</code> in the above command.
WARNING! Do not delete or move any of the invisible files or folders. They are essential parts of the system software. Moving or deleting them may render your OS inoperable, if you don't know what you're doing.

  • Not enough available disk space...

I know this has been asked a bunch of times but the threads I've found never really seemed to come to a conclusion with a solution. My wife has a white, 2 GHz Intl Macbook that is about 4 1/2 years old. We upgraded the hard drive a little over a year ago to a 500 GB, Seagate I believe. At the end of May, my wife downloaded a software/security update of some sort and suddenly her computer was acting up. Long story short, we had to reformat the hard drive, start fresh, and use the latest back-up to restore her computer. Since then, her computer has not done a back-up and now when trying to get it to do a back-up we get the following in Time Machine Buddy:
    Starting standard backup

After everything I've read, I "think" it has something to do with the reformatting and restoring of the hard drive and the time machine "thinking" it's a different computer so it's trying to back all of it up. I could be way off on that though. I really want to get this working again so any help is appreciated.
An added note is that both of our MacBook's are backed up to this Time Capsule and I'm not having any trouble at all backing mine up. Thanks for any and all help.

That is exactly correct. Time Machine thinks it is a new computer (because it is), so it will make a complete backup of the Mac.
It sounds like your Time Capsule is getting tight on space. If you do not really need all of the old backups for the MacBook, you could delete them, start over with a new "master" backup and move forward.
Post back if you need more info on this.

  • Available disk space irregularity

Hi, I have 999,35 GB hard drive capacity in my iMac.
This is what Get info told me about Macintosh HD:
    Capacity: 999.35 GB
    Available: 58.13 GB
    Used: 941,219,274,752 bytes
I'm sure there is MUCH MORE available disk space than 58.13 GB! I've got used about 230-250 GB according to Forklift app, I was checking used data with Omni Disk Sweeper too - the same anwser. There are no hidden files, neighter visible files that I can find to delete:
My Activity Monitor shows me cca 200 GB Virtual Memory, that means up to 500 GB used in total! There must be another 500 GB used in my HDD somewhere.
My Time machine is OFF since I bought the Mac.
I just work about 3 months with very huge files in iBooks Author (3 GB one .iba file). This is my suspicion - this eating space issue has something to do with versioning and autosave in Lion and iBooks Author. Does anyone have similar problem? Any ideas to solve this? How can I check real used disk space?
    Message was edited by: Pantomas78

That number is in bytes, so yes, each of those is over 10 MB. If you have around 450 GB of unaccounted space, it would take 45,000 of those files to fill that space... it's possible you have that many, or its possible there are some much larger files mixed in there, or you may have other large files elsewhere.
The .DocumentRevisions-V100 folder is used by Versions in Lion and Mountain Lion. So, it stores different states of revisions of all your documents. With any app that supports auto-save and Versions, the document itself represents the current version, while previous versions of the document can be recovered using the information stored in that folder.
If this isn't something you need, you can turn this off using the information at the following sites:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/07/11/disable-auto-save-and-versions-in-mac-os-x/
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/27544/how-to-completely-disable-auto-sa ve-and-versions-in-mac-os-x-lion
I'm not sure that you can disable Versions and auto-save independently, unfortunately.

  • Available disk space seems incorrect

Hello again everyone. Thank you for solving my problem last time. This time I come with another problem I haven't seen anyone else answer.
I think the title says it all. My laptop is telling me I have about 1GB left on my HD, but I KNOW there MUST be more available or there are a lot of hidden files that I can't find that are taking up gigs of space.
I know that this is not right because I have had gigs of video files or the like on here before and still have 20GBs left just fine. (The total HD space I think is 55GB.) I have been deleting file after file after file and it keeps going down and down and down even when I have not downloaded or added anything to it.
I have almost nothing left to delete save picture files which I definitely do not have 20GBs of.
Also, when I open Photoshop, the available disk space goes down significantly (about 1GB). I close PS, disk space comes back. I restart my computer, some more disk space will come back. The most I've been up to recently is 2GB.
If anyone has any ideas or solutions they are very much so appreciated. Thank you.

Awesome program. And it seems to have confirmed my suspicions.
I scanned what I believed to be the biggest folders of stuff: Applications, Documents, Music, and Library. The total for the four was just under 14GBs. 55 - 14 = 41GBs. Is there something I could have missed? I don't have any movies and the pictures folder came up to about 60MBs.
Where have these 41GBs gone to~?

  • You do not have enough free disk space to create the database

    Hello,
When I try to create a database, I have this error message:
You do not have enough free disk space to create the database. You need at least 1428480 kB on /opt/oracle, you have only 1179648 kB available, please alocate more free disk space.*

1179648 kB available space is comparable with 1.2GB. Both are the available space.
Thank you for your help. From the error you reported in your original post
You do not have enough free disk space to create the database. You need at least <font color="red" size="4">1428480 kB</font> on <font color="red" size="4">/opt/oracle</font>, you have only <font color="red" size="4">1179648 kB</font> available, please alocate more free disk space.
    SQL> select 1179648 i_have, 1428480 oracle_needs,
      2         1179648 - 1428480 i_am_short
      3  from dual;
        I_HAVE ORACLE_NEEDS I_AM_SHORT
1179648      1428480    -248832So, yes, both numbers report the available space in slightly different terms, but what you need to be concerned about is how much Oracle thinks you neeed to have, which is <font color="red" size="4">more</font> than you actually have on /opt/oracle.

  • How to monitor available disk space in archive directory

I need to monitor the available disk space of the archive directory during a long running PL/SQL program which does a lot of inserts and updates. This program is running in a background session and should regularly check for the available space. If there is less then a customizable number of MBs free the program must terminate itself. How can I access this information from the file system? (I'm using 8.1.6 and the application will run on both AIX and NT)

The directory itself is not taking space (It actually does but in most cases you can neglect its size). It is files that it has that take space. Also, the more files you create the more space gets allocates from the media that holds them. And the last, the media (Hard Drive, Floppy, or other) has free space, not directory. That is how all OS's that I know about work.

    Important
This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the
registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry,
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-the-registry
To open the Registry Editor, please press Win + R, type regedit in the blank box, press

Now the Registry Editor is open.
Then we see the pane on left, expand the following path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Then we can see a list on right, find Cache, right click on it, click

Then the Component Services window will pop up, on the left pane, expand
    Component services -> Computes ->
My Computer -> Dcom config -> and select
Microsoft Excel Application, right click on it -> Properties ->
Identity tab -> Select The interactive user ->
    OK.
I hope I've explained the steps clearly.

  • Available disk space.

    Hello Guys,
I would like to ask that do any of you know a way to find the available disk space left to be used by the data files in the database. Scenario is that what would happen if the available disk space on the server is very less or let's say its 1% free and this time the datafile needs some space to expand (automatically). It will give an error and the process is screwed up. Solution 1. Monitoring on the OS level, but what if the OS level solution fails to warn the administrator? Can we detect this via the database?
We are using Oracle 9i RAC on HP-UX, i can do this on HP-UX but i would like to know if there is a way to find this in Oracle Database?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cheers!!

OEM can be one option which can generate alerts if the disk is about to full other than that I there is no database view which can tell you the details of disk space, from database you can query OS like using host in sqlplus and then parse the result but I dont know why any1 want to do that because you can do this better with some shell or perl script.
    Thanks

  • "There is not enough memory or disk space..."

I am trying to open a .docx file with Word 2004 version 11.6.6 (purchased). However, I always get a message saying, "there is not enough memory or disk space to convert this document" when there is plenty of memory. I have a MacBook Pro version 10.6.8. I downloaded the .XML conversion app. from the Microsoft website to no avail.  However, I can open the same file on my PowerMac G5 also with Word 2004 and the same .XML conversion app. I downloaded for my MacBook Pro from the Microsoft website.  I checked the conversion log of the .XML converter and it says:
    Start time: 2012-02-05 00:12:59 -0500
Converting file: /Users/xxxxxxxxxxx/Downloads/Formulario-Guía Observación de la Escuela-4.docx

One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
    Conversion failed
    End time: 2012-02-05 00:13:01 -0500
What gives?  Is the file I'm trying to open corrupt or is there some kind of update I need for my Office Word program?  How can the file be opening fine on one of my computers, but not the other newer one?

I also run Word 2004 and OS X 10.6.8 and have a .docx file that the Microsoft Open XML Converter 1.2.1 will not convertet, yet the same problem .docx file will convert fine on a 10.4.11 OS X Mac.
