Finder is treating all devices as hard drive?

I'm having a weird display bug and I can't figure out what is causing it. It doesn't appear to be a big problem but it is bugging the **** out of me. All my devices show up as the Hard Drive Icon regardless of what it is. USB, Firewire, disk image doesn't matter they all display the same. The only thing I can figure is it might have something to do with a newly added application. The one I'm most suspicious of is 1Password with it's Agile keychain technology. This is just a guess but have not way of knowing. The only other new app I have is Cover Stream and I doubt that would be causing any problems. Any ideas?

So I got this in terminal
MacBook-Pro-Micha:~ michalpasek$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0

MacBook-Pro-Micha:~ michalpasek$ diskutil mount /dev/disk2s1

If the volume is damaged, try the "readOnly" option
MacBook-Pro-Micha:~ michalpasek$ diskutil mount force /dev/disk2s1
Usage:   diskutil mount [readOnly] [-mountPoint Path] DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
Mount will mount the volume in the "standard" place (/Volumes), unless
an optional mount point is specified.

  • Why can't i find Time Machine Back Up Device in Hard Drive

Why can't i find Time Machine  Device in Hard Drive when i have plugged it already. White light just keeps on blinking.

Understanding and resolving a blinking status light
Here are the reasons that the status light may blink:
Your Time Capsule has detected that the internal hard drive has reported a SMART error
The base station has not yet been configured
The base station has been reset.
A new firmware update is available for the base station.
No IP address is available for the base station.
A Wi-Fi base station in Extended Mode is out-of-network Wi-Fi range of a primary Wi-Fi base station.
The WAN Ethernet cable is unplugged from the Wi-Fi base station.
The Wi-Fi base station lacks a path to the Internet (or local router).
Internet access may be temporarily unavailable from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
A persistent, blinking, amber status light indicates that your base station may require your attention.
How to resolve a blinking amber status light alert
Launch AirPort Utility to determine why your base station status light is blinking amber.
AirPort Utility opens automatically if your Wi-Fi base station requires your attention. You may also choose to launch AirPort Utility at any time.
In the AirPort Utility window, locate your Wi-Fi base station and double-click on it to open the Summary window. Note: If you have more than one Wi-Fi base station, double-click on the icon for the Wi-Fi base station that has the amber circle next to it.
When the Summary window appears, double-click the amber circle to the right of Wi-Fi base station Status to open the Status window.
The Status window lists any conditions that require your attention. Respond to each item until there are no more items listed.
Eliminating the blinking, amber status light may require making changes to a specific setting, or putting a checkmark in the "Ignore" checkbox beside any option you don't wish to change. A checkmark simply tells the AirPort that you are aware of the issue and you have chosen to ignore it. For example, you may wish to leave your AirPort open without a password so that anyone can join your wireless network.
Click Update to apply your changes (the base station will restart).
After the base station has restarted, the status light should be green and not blinking. If the status light stays amber in color and blinks after the Wi-Fi base station restarts, you may repeat the steps above.

How do I find my photos on my external hard drive backed up using Time Machine?
My hard drive died so this is my only storage. The hard drive was from an early 2008 Macbook Pro.
I had recently installed Snow Leopard.

If they’re in an iPhoto library, look in the Pictures folder of your home folder first. Otherwise, they’ll be in the location corresponding to the one you saved them to.

  • Downloads scattered ALL over the hard drive

Trying to gain a little control over the downloading process; I have always set Firefox to "Always ask me where to save files". For the first half of FF's life that worked perfectly fine; saving a file brought up the appropriate dialog box, showing the location I lasted saved to and asking if I wanted to use that one again.
I can see how that might be a privacy concern on a shared computer like the Recently Used Files list that comes with so many applications but it has never been a concern for me.
What does bug the absolute $%&%$&% Hell out of me is that FF now pops up the most goddawful random locations as suggestions. No matter hoe consistently I use the same folder, FF suggests places that are quite literally ALL over the hard drive with no detectable rhyme or reason. I have been waiting patiently for the development team to correct whatever they did to make FF unable to do this most basic task that it was quite capable of achieving with apparent ease at least as far back as its Phoenix days. But, alas, the "Let's Break Everything" release of the week schedule has never fixed the problem.
What gives? Does anyone have a fix for the problem? I know that it has affecting tons of people for just as long because I've heard the complaints.

I've give that a try. I'm not sure it will help because it does this even when every download is coming from the same site. But anything is worth trying. Thanks

  • All my external Hard Drives stopped showing up in both Finder and Disk Utility

    Hello there.
i have this strange issue that occured just out of nowhere without me (knowingly) having contributed anything to it.
yesterday i launched my iMac and my external firewire drive wasn't showing up in neither the finder nor on the desktop. i instantly thought about a hard drive crash, but soon tried other things to evaluate (or not) my guess.
for instance, i unplugged the drive waited a few minutes before i plugged it in again. since this iomega drive is also equipped with a regular usb port i also switched cables and tried connecting it via the iMac usb sockets as well as via an usb hub without any luck. the drive still won't show up. so i launched the Disk Utility, to see if the drive needs some checking/repairing, but to my surprise it wasn't showing in Disk Utility either.
thus far i only considered this to be an issue with only this particular external drive, but when i eventually switched on a 2nd external drive (this time an usb drive i use for Time Machine) that drive also refused to show up in either the Finder or the Disk Utility app.
curious as i was, i then fired up a 3rd and 4th external drive and now had all 4 drives running at the same time. none of which were showing up, just as if they weren't even connected with the iMac.
this strikes me as more than odd. i've heard about hard drive failures and crashes. they just occur over time. maybe and under some very strange coincidences it is possible that two external hard drives quit their jobs at the very same time, but seriously .... 4 of them?? i hardly think so.
well, maybe it's the iMac's usb/firewire controller that's causing the trouble, i thought. but then again, my other connected devices (iPhone, iPad, Printer, Scanner, eyeTV) are functioning and get detected just fine as far as i can tell.
i have no idea what's going on. i dismiss the idea of 4 external drives having crashed all at the same time just as much as i don't think that the iMac's usb/firewire controller has got any issues. re-formatting any of the 4 drives is out of the question and even if i'd consider such desperate measures, the Disk Utility wouldn't let me re-format anything anyhow, because the drives aren't listed there. i wish i could just use my Time Machine to resolve the issue but, as i mentioned earlier, i can't access the Time Machine because it also won't show up.
please, i need an expert's help here. please, somebody bring back my 4 external drives so i can access them in finder again.
any help will be much appreciated.
    thank you in advance..
    ..Otis

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    diskutil list
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • How to Find all folders on hard drive by size

I'm trying to clean up my internal hard drive (232gb). I've been opening up misc folders and getting size info. Still missing about 60 Gig. I seem to remember, back in the day, there was a way to get a list of all folders on a drive listed in order of file size. Is this a possibility?
Also speaking of back in the day, why don't I need to optimize my Hard Drive and is fixing permissions the same thing.
    Sorry for the two topics
    Thanks

I recommend [WhatSize|http://www.whatsizemac.com/index.php] ($12.99 US) for the following features:
It's the only one I know of with an option to show everything at once; the others only show things the logged-on user is permitted to see (click the +As User+ padlock icon in the toolbar).
You can use any of 4 different display formats (3 text and a pie chart).
    There's a "Find Duplicates" feature.
It has very good and complete Help.

  • HT204370 I have changed my internal hard drive on my macbook pro. I have put old hard drive into a capsule and have this plugged into my laptop. I can't find the movies on my old hard drive now? Any idea how I can move them to iTunes again? cloud taking H

I have just changed my internal Hard drive on my MacBook pro. I had recently downloaded some movies on iTunes which I want to put into my iTunes library on my new internal hard drive. I have put my old internal hard drive into an external capsule but when I open the icon of the hard drive from the desktop I can't find my movies.
At the moment I have the new movies downloading again from the cloud but it is literally taking hours for even one movie to load.
When I changed the internal hard drive I restored my info from my old external hard drive which hadn't been backed up in a month and hence does not have my latest movies...
I am concerned that I might go over my internet usage limit (flatmate is refusing to change to unlimited package!!!!) by downloading all the movies again from the cloud never mind how long it is taking...
Is there any way to restore all my info and media from the old internal Hard drive in the capsule as well as from the external hard drive?

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • How can I transfer my old iTunes (playlists and all) from the hard drive of my old dead computer to the iTunes of my new one?

So my old PC died before I managed to back up my iTunes library onto DVDs. I do however have the hard drive from the old PC with all the program files, files and folders on. I also have the iPhone 4, which has my top rated playlist on but that only holds about 20% of my entire music collection on.
Is it possible to somehow find all my old iTunes music, videos, playlists, podcasts etc and transfer it into the iTunes on the new PC without losing anything?
    Thanks for reading :-)

im trying to do the same. how do you
Copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the old machine into <User's Music> on the new one?
im sorry i am totally inept when it comes to this stuff. can you walk me thru the steps to copy? please

  • How can I find the largest files on my hard drive (sorted in descending order of size)?

To make most efficient use of Time Machine backup, I would like to have the option to exclude certain larger files that I don't need to save in case of a disk crash (e.g. a Windows partition under Parallels Desktop, which is backed up at the office anyway) etc.
I can't figure out how I can scan my entire hard drive and obtain a list of all files in descending order of size, irrespective of within which subdirectories such files are hidden. Anyone having an idea on how this simple task can be accomplished?
    Thanks,
    AnLe41

While Finder is active, press Command-F (Find in the File menu).
In that window you can set search criteria. In the second sub-toolbar should be a couple of buttons representing pulldown menus; by default, the first usually shows "kind". Click that one.
In the menu that opens, if "Size" or "File Size" is not available, select "Other". Then in the new window select "Size" or "File Size" and okay the window. From then on that choice will be available in the first pulldown menu.
You can use that to search your drive.
Note - by clicking the "+" button at the far right of the strip containing the pulldown menus, you can add additional search criteria, thus restricting a search to exactly what you want.

  • My itunes can't find the music on my external hard drive.

My itunes was working fine using my external hard drive. Then I played a song that was not part of that music folder. Now itunes says it can't find any of the songs that are listed. The little evil exclamation point pops up. How can I reconnect to the hard drive without having to start all over?

Thanks for the clarification of check vs click. I guess once I saw the word "double" I stopped reading. I ended up "reloading" the drive to itunes. The interesting thing is that itunes isn't setting the location for the external drive. It is set for a folder under "my music" The actual songs aren't there, but the folders are there. When i put my external drive music to a new itunes library, i did so without copying the songs. So about 100 gig of music is in a folder that is really only about 300mb. I noticed before i restarted that the location was this folder. When i opened it, it was empty. After redoing everthing all of the songs are on the folder. I probably should have just changed it to go to the external drive like you suggested. Just for fun i changed the location to the external and bypassed that small folder. It worked great. It only took about 2 minutes to update, and it works great. I thought i had to use that stupid little folder. Thanks for all of your help!!

  • Can't find my music in iTunes - new hard drive

I just had my computer repaired and they replaced the hard drive. Before I took it in for repair, I backed up all my data including music. But to do this I just copied all my files onto an external hard drive (I did not use any specific back up program). Now that my computer is repaired, they replaced the hard drive. I redownloaded iTunes but it is now the latest version but I think it might be an even more recent version than I had previously (and I don't know if this matters). So I put all my music into the iTunes folder (copied it back from my external hard drive) but when I open iTunes, it doesn't "find" it. I have tried every suggested "help" method I could find in the online FAQ support, but nothing works.
Separately, for my daughter, I somehow screwed up the backup of her profile and lost ALL of her purchased music. What are the chances that Apple will let me redownload all of her purchases? If they don't, I have a 15 year old girl who will most likely murder her mother when she gets home from camp!
And last question, I know that they only let you copy your music onto "5" computers. I already used up 2 uses due to replacement of my computer. Now with the new hard drive, will this make it number 3? I want to get a new laptop in the next year but don't want to get up to #4 of my allowance. Do they seriously expect us to repurchase all our music?
    My computer is running Vista.

So I put all my music into the iTunes folder (copied it back from my external hard drive) but when I open iTunes, it doesn't "find" it.
If you didn't back up or restore the iTunes database files, you also need to drag the music into the open iTunes application window.
What are the chances that Apple will let me redownload all of her purchases?
And last question, I know that they only let you copy your music onto "5" computers.
For most purposes, that doesn't apply to recent song purchases.
