Finder is Whack (Mac Expert Please)

I seem to be having issues with Finder. Is there an expert tech out there that can please advise? I am moving large amounts of data sometime from Hard Drive to Hard Drive, and sometimes within the same Hard Drive, and I would like to solve this issue in a way that makes sense. This has been a problem since I switched back to mac about half a year ago and it continues to present difficulties. It is NOT possible for me to inspect every haystack every time I am trying to move data in order to troubleshoot these error messages. *
I am currently trying to MOVE data from my iDisk to my desktop. I am doing this by selecting the Mac/Command Key /after/ I start to move the selected files. If I select the Command Key /before/ I start to move files, then Finder only decides to take one of the files that I am hovering over when I do the selection (...which is uber annoying).
I am getting the following errors. First I get:
"Copy: You can't copy some of these items because their names are the same as other items on the destination volume, and the volume does not distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames, do you want to skip these items and continue copying other items?" > Stop or Skip
I select skip, which I assume means that Finder will only move the files that it does not see a CAPS conflict with. 1. However, why is there no option to simply overwrite the existing file with the new file? 2. Why do I get this error when I see that there are files with CAPS but which are named and capitalized in /exactly/ the same way? 3. Why does it say it is a Copy error when I am moving data? Is Finder very specific about this error or is it a little loose as to when it uses Move or Copy (I had thought it was a move because there was no plus symbol shown during the operation...)?
After I hit Skip - at some point through the process I get an error message that says "Finder cannot complete this operation because fileone.pdf is in use."
Does anyone know what exactly has happened at this point?! I have just moved 1+GB of data and I can't figure out if just the files that did not have CAP conflict issues, and UP UNTIL THIS fileone.pdf ALL GOT MOVED - or if just /some/ of the files got moved.
Also, what is the proper way to get out of this cycle and recover from this partial move? I can't reasonably be expected to sit down and open two finder windows and methodically chunk through every single file in these two folder and their subfolders at this point to do this manually. Is there an expert out there that understands how to handle this?
Thanks in advance for any constructive help on this.
- Jonathan

Hi Cap.
Many thanks.
So yeah, my MacPro disk is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which I would have to assume the iDisk is formatted as. And since my MacPro must be formatted the same way (I didn't format it) this caps sensitive error seems curious (and/or troubling).
I mean it is not possible that the fact that I have another Hard Drive in my MacPro running BootCamp has caused an issue. Is it possible that running Parallels with XP on the MacPro and Win7 on the MacBookPro has someone gotten Finder confused? These errors complicate life greatly...
Also, do you ever use Target Disk Mode for moving large amounts of data?
I have to move 100 - 400 GB of data back and forth between these two machines and the fact that no Mac Tech can answer whether it is possible to force move data from one hard drive to another (or on the same hard drive) by using the Command Key seems funny. Also, it would be nice if someone could clarify what Finder has done after it says it "can't complete an operation". Does this mean it /partially/ completed it?
I suppose the correct way to get out of this in the future - now that I think about it - is to simply do an Undo to make sure you are back to the previous state and /then/ troubleshoot the listed file...
Again thanks a ton,
Jon

HELP!  I had iPhoto on my mac, for some reason it was not responding or damaged.   down loaded a new version but can't find my photos. any ideas please.  I thought once on the mac always on the mac.

Sorry but we need details to help
What version of the OS do you have? What has changed since iPhtoo worked?
What exactly is the problem - you say "it was not responding" - You downloaded a new version (what version)" -you can't find yoru photos" none of which is helpful
look in your applications folder - is there an Iphoto application there? If so get info and report the version
Look in the picures folder - is there an iPhoto library there? If so exactly (including exact error messages) happens if you double click on it?
what else can you tell us that might help us assist you?

Sorry if this seems negative but you really should post such a question in the iPhone section of Apple Communities.   You are much more likely to get expert help there immediately.
Just re-post with the same detail.

  • ISync for Mac - Help please!

I have a Nokia N70 and am trying to update my contacts from my Address Book. I have up-to-date OSX 10.4.10 and iSync 2.4 and the phone is being recognised, so a good start! My problem is that my updated Address Book entries are not being transferred, somehow an old version of my Address Book is being used by iSync.
I've tried restarting the Mac, clearing all contacts from my phone and sync-ing again (repeatedly), but I still get the contacts from the old version of Address Book loaded into the phone.
I'm not a Mac expert, can anyone smarter than me help please?
    Thanks for your time.
    MacAndy
PS Any tips on useful software for making the N70 otherwise more compatible with music and any other areas would be very welcome.

There's an actions folder. It's your hard drive>library>application support>adobe>photoshop elements>8.0>Locale>en_US (this one is different if you aren't in the US)>workflow panels>actions

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I am just learning Lightroom 5. Noticed very recently that 'Photo is Missing' has come up against virtually all my files over all my folders/subfolders. That said, using Finder on my MAC I can see thumnails of ALL my images which sit within my Pictures Folder. Equallly on my back-up on the Mac's Time Machine all versions of same images are present. Any solutions?

It means that the photos have been moved or renamed or deleted outside of Lightroom. (Hint: don't do that)

I'd like to know how to change my profile picture that appears on mail threads on my mac.  please help.

There may be other methods, but below is how I change my email photo.
Here is how to change your Mac Mail email photo in Mountain Lion:
Open the App called "Contacts". Type your name in the search field. Your contact info and photo should appear. Click on your photo. You now have some photo options. I use the "Recents" tab, and simply drag photo files from Finder into that window in Contacts. Drag and drop.
If you have trouble finding yourself in "Contacts" you can also get there by doing this:
Open one of your sent messages. Double click your photo in that message. This opens another window with your photo in it. Double-click that photo. This should open your contact information in the Contacts App.
    Hope this helps.

  • Looking for Toronto (GTS) based MAC expert... suggestions?

Looking for a MAC expert that can come into by business and assist with all our computers.
We have the need to configure all our computers, place a backup system in place. etc.

These forums are mainly for asking technical questions; Apple does not participate except to occasionally make sure that the ToU are being followed. I believe there is a business section if I'm not mistaken? Ahh, here is a link to the Apple Business Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us_smb_78313
You might want to start there; I am sure there'd be resources, but since I've never had the need, I don't know where to find them.

My MBP has Mountain Lion installed. The iPhoto version is 8.1.2. Cannot install iPhoto 9.4 without installing 9.0, but cannot find 9.0. Solution, please.

If you're running Mac OS X 10.8.x ou can purchase iPhoto version 9.x from the App Store. If you purchase iPhoto at the App Store you will automatically get the most up-to-date version and you won't need to install the 9.4 update.

  • My iPhoto won't open. It says "Your photo library is either in use by another application or no longer readable." Please tell me I haven't lost all my pics?! I do not have them backed up. I have tried restarting my mac. Please Help!

My iPhoto won't open. It says "Your photo library is either in use by another application or no longer readable." Please tell me I haven't lost all my pics?! I do not have them backed up. I have tried restarting my mac. Please Help!

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
What version of iPhoto do you have?
