Finder Issue

After iMac (10.6.8) has been running for a few hours, sometimes less than that Garageband and iTunes won't open.
I have been keeping track of different scenarios when this happens and every time it happens I have noticed that the Finder won't allow me to save any file to the HD or the external drive because the item could not be found.
It will allow me to save files to the Desktop however.
I have no idea if Garageband and iTunes and the Finder acting up are related but just putting it out there.
When I click on any  location via the side bar icons all I get is the respective icon appearing and .
However, when I click on the Devices icon in the sidebar I can path my way to my user and it allows me to save it anywhere I want.
Rebooting only fixes these issues temporarily. I have run Disk Utilty from the Start Up Disc as well and everything came back with no problems found.
Also I am having to Force Quit all Apple based programs such as iWork 08 during this period of the Finder Issue and I cannot access the About This Mac function.
I can however activate the Software Updater.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert!
It sounds like there may be some sort of an issue in your operating system causing this to happen. You will probably want to create a Time Machine backup of your computer and reinstall the operating system to see if that affects the issue. An article about Time Machine backups can be found right here:
Mac Basics: Time Machine
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
While an article about reinstalling Snow Leopard can be found here:

Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • Finder issues and Get Info refusing to show the number of files on items on the main hard drive.

I am having finder issues. Mostly on the main hard drive. It takes ages to find things and I get the spinning wheel every time I open a folder.
So I moved all of my files to a external drive.  When I had finished transfering I hit get info on the files on the external drive and on the same folder on the main drive.  To ensure that it has copied over all the files.  Because it was acting up and not copying all the files.
Get Info refuses to show the number of files within the folders on the main hard drive. It hasppily tells me everything on any of the external drives.
I have reset, the imac.  I have re indexed 3 times.  I have deleted the finder plist files.  I have reset finder using terminal commands. I have moved nearly everything off the main hard drive. But nothing is working.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what could be causing my finder and get info issues.
    Any help wpuld be appreciated.
Running Mountain Lion on a late 2009 Imac

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Finder issue with Spaces

I found a Finder issue when using spaces. I performed an upgrade installation on my Intel Core Duo iMac. Finder worked as expected. Then, I turned on Spaces. After a few minutes the finder hung. I tried using activity monitor several times to force quit it. Finder quit, then relaunched and hung. Then, I turned off Spaces and the Finder stopped hanging and functioned as expected. I turned Spaces back on, and the Finder is still working currently. I am not sure if this bug will reproduce itself at this point.

    Ok, got it!
Please refer to the original post and the third post in the following thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10122332
Turns out I was having the same two problems as the original poster. It also turns out the solution to his first problem, which he outlined in the third post, happened to solve both problems on my machine.
In your Spaces prefs (Expose & Spaces in the System Preferences), make sure "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" is checked!
Seems to have worked for me!
Here's hoping this solution helps others with the same problem. =)

  • Finder Issue with Alphabetizing

    Hi everybody,
I'm having an issue after installing Lion in that Cover Flow/List/Icon in Finder is not alphabetizing (yet every other option is).  Does any body know how to fix this?  I've made sure that English is the correct text/language, but nothing else has changed.
    Thanks

I've had similar issues recently. I saw them first on an SMB share. Here are slightly different steps for repro:
    All in the Finder:
    * On a network share, create a new folder, e.g., "test"
    * Within "test", create two new folders, "test1" and "test2", renaming them as you create them
    * Select the "test1" directory you just created
    Result:
    * After selecting "test1", it visually changes to "test2" such that there are two "test2"'s listed there
    * After a short delay, the display is rendered correctly, showing "test1" and "test2", but "test2" is now selected.
    * If you select "test1" again it then displays as "test2" (i.e. two "test2"'s) and "test1" from there on out is inaccessible
Note that "ls" from the terminal shows these correctly; this is a Finder issue.
Unmounting and remounting the share fixes the problem.
This also happens on a USB card reader. It does not happen on the internal drive, nor on a PPC Mac running 10.4.9.

  • Two FINDER issues

taking a stab at trying to solve two finder issues.
    1. is it possible to keep finder from automatically sorting a re-named folder or file when i am in the middle of re-organizing things? say to wait until i have actively clicked a sort button or otherwise clicked out of the finder view? i am always running around trying to find a re-named file or folder in a list of one hundred files when all i really want to do is rename some things and then move them. having this newly named entity automatically do the skeedaddle out of my view in the finder window is a real pita.
    2. is there a realiable method that will let folders sort alphabetically with folders and files to sort alphabetically with files? i find it very annoying to have all this mixed up together when i will look for a file with files and for a folder with folders. i tried some terminal editing based upon a posted url that described a solution to this at one point but it does not appear to have taken.
    TIA!

    1) No.
    2) Why not sort by Kind?

  • Finder Issues - List View, etc

I have been having some increasing issue with Finder (Won't close, etc).
For instance, Finder will not LIST VIEW files that are in the Documents folder (on the computer) Only icon or column view. It will list view items on an external drive.
I tried to reinstall the operating system (SL) but no avail. Any ideas? Thanks!

The only other thing I can think of that could cause this behavior is the DS_Store.
Let's try removing it. Launch Terminal.
    Enter:
    cd /
    Press Return.
    Next enter:
    rm /.DS_Store
    Press return
This should set your Finder back to default.

  • Finder issues still exist in 10.9.2

Whenever I updated to 10.9.1, I had issues in Photoshop and other programs when I tried to open files from within them Finder would take about 30 secs to populate the list of files on my computer. 10.9.2 fixed that but now I'm having a different Finder problem. When I use Flash builder and import a project, it imports the first one fine but when i go to import a second project, I hit Browse to find the file I need and when it pops up it shows me an empty Documents folder which is not empty on my file system and I switch to Desktop, it populates my finder with the files on my desktop and when I go to select the project, the dialog box for Finder closes but my file doesn't load into Flash Builder so I can't import it. If I close Flash Builder and try again it will let me import one project and then will not let me load in a second one.
    I'm using a late 2011 MacBook Air
Here's a list of what I've done to try to fix it:
    - Uninstall Flash Builder, reinstall Flash Builder
    - Uninstall Creative Suite, reinstall Creative Suite
    - Delete Harddrive contents and reinstall OSX Mavericks
    - Delete Harddrive contents and install OSX Mountain Lion, this fixed it and I had no problems using Flash Builder which is why it's something specific to Mavericks
    - Updated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and tried again but the problem still persisted
    - I tried it on a MacBook Pro I have and it works fine

Sometimes this issue is caused by a misconfiguration or incompatibility of the Exchange server, or perhaps by a bug in Mail. If so, you won't be able to resolve it yourself. The fact that your iOS devices may be working well with the same account isn't relevant, because iOS uses a completely different protocol (ActiveSync) to communicate with Exchange servers. By default, OS X Mail uses the EWS protocol.
Each of the following steps has been reported to help, at least temporarily, in some cases (not all):
    1. Back up all data. Open the Internet Accounts pane in System Preferences and check to make sure you don't have duplicate Exchange accounts. If you do, delete all but one of the duplicates. If there are no duplicates, delete the account and recreate it with the same settings.
    2. Rebuild the affected mailbox.
    3. Reindex messages.
    4. Follow the instructions in this support article to disable autodiscovery. You may need to get configuration details from the server administrator.
    5. In the Keychain Access application, delete the password item for the account. The next time Mail tries to access the account, you'll be prompted for the password. Check the box to save it in the Keychain.
    6. If you've created subfolders of the Exchange inbox, log in to the server through its web interface, move the messages out, and remove the subfolders. The inbox should have no subfolders.
    7. Synchronize with the server using IMAP rather than EWS. This is only possible if IMAP is enabled on the server.
    8. Consider using Outlook instead of Mail to access your Exchange mail. It uses yet another proprietary protocol (MAPI) that isn't available to other mail clients.

  • Pictures in right order. Finder issue? iTunes issue?

I'm trying to sync exported pictures from Lightroom to my iPhone/iPad.
I have them in a folder in Finder (don't want to use iPhoto or Aperture) and syncing it that way.
I need them to be synced in Z-A order (as I have managed to get my finder in that order after a lot of trouble).
BUT even thou my finder shows all the folders in Z-A order it still comes up in A-Z order on the iPad.
Is that something that can be fixed?
I'm going nuts here trying to figure out a good way to get my picture over to my mobile devices. Since the only way I have found to get some kind of order in Finder is to name the picture with the year infront of it (2009 Fall) but then the old pictures come first when I transfer them over.. I don't want that.
I can't sort it with date or anything like that either cause the pictures has been changed and moved a lot so the dates the files have are off.
    Any help would be great!
    Thank you

    Paul
    Thanks for the offer.
Rather strangley, I made some obstensibly unrelated changes to these fragments and the issue seems to have gone away.
Never really got to the root of the problem, but am not going to worry about it unless it reappears.

  • IMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, Finder issues with flash drives - related?

My iMac falls asleep for no known reason, often in the middle of active use. (Similar problem recently described in thread with messageID=11829917.)
Sleep onset is frequent but seems to vary based on both currently-running software and attached devices (particularly USB flash drives). It will almost always wake up when I hit the space bar afterward, but might sleep again within a minute or two, then not for an hour or more. The sleep occurs with little notice (brief stall of display, sometimes enough time to click on another app window and bring that forward before the screen goes dark), and 95% of the time the computer wakes up after hitting the spacebar. The other 5 % of the time the display reappears but the entire OS is frozen and usually requires unplugging the power cable. There are other symptoms in the Finder - more below. Once in a while the fan revs up like a WWII fighter plane taking off from a carrier, but this is unusual and all the really irritating stuff also happens without this symptom, which usually stops on its own. Immediately after reawakening error messages are displayed to report that flash drives were improperly disconnected (Tell me about it! This has been the case for several months whether the computer goes to sleep by itself or if I put it there manually.)
The computer seems to go into sleep mode most frequently when not-particularly-demanding graphics (Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader) and video (QuickTime Pro 7.6.4) apps are running. Turning these off makes nod-offs less frequent but doesn't stop it entirely. When video thumbnails are displayed in Finder windows a lot of time may be required to load the data and this often paralyzes everything else AND this also seems to be a trigger for a nod-off (i.e. QuickTime not necessary to make the computer choke). This is highly variable and some video clips load quickly (< 20 sec), while others take several minutes, and this doesn't necessarily correlate with file size.
Another factor is whether flash drives are connected - these seem to make the nod-offs more frequent AND Finder regularly loses communication to these both while just sitting there and also in the middle of file transfers. A very early 250 MB drive (Lexar - vintage 2004) will always communicate, but different USB2-capable drives all are either unreliable (Lexar 8 GB and KData 4 GB both < 1 yr old) or apparently dead (Lexar 2 GB ~ 2 yr old). The failures may be damaging the drives - they are inconsistent-to-bad at communicating with my MacBook Pro. I know this sounds like the drives are at fault, but there are things which make me suspect the OS (both computers use the same version): 1) different flash drives display the same on-again-off-again behavior AND the 2) the 2 GB drive that hasn't communicated with my Macs in over a month has no trouble talking with my wife's WinXP computer. When communication isn't working with these drives, they do not show up in either Finder or Disk Utility. When the Mac-dead 2 GB Lexar is plugged into either computer and I launch Disk Utility, the initial scan for drives never finishes so I have to force quit. (When they are working, on the iMac the large drives only appear in Finder if I go to User and press Command-uparrow (to go up a directory layer) - in columns display mode nothing appears in the left-hand column.
(The following describes a set of problems I've had a little longer and which may or may not be related):
At times the Finder loses some but not all functions:
    1) Sometimes files in the Trash can't be ejected* even when all apps are turned off
    2) usually when problem 1) is observed, no keyboard commands work: nothing happens when pressing Command-W, Command-uparrow or Command-N to open a new window. Text typed will not be entered to change filenames (but this can still be done by typing the desired text in TextEdit, copying there and selecting and pasting with mouse commands.)
<* I have downloaded an app for forcing file deletion, but haven't really needed it - the delete option and keyboard commands all return after shutdown and reboot, and there's usually enough annoying stuff going on by this time that that seems the best thing to do.>
Things which I've tried to fix it with so far (not in this order):
    - blowing dust out of the back with canned air
    - checking temperatures - CPU/GPU showing 72/73, HD bay 51, etc.
    - fixing permissions from normal boot
    - boot from install disk and running extended hardware test (no problems found during scans repeated several times during the past month)
    - fixing permissions and running Disk First Aid from install disk boot
    - getting files off the hard drive (was as low as 3 GB free space, currently ~ 35 GB and climbing)
    - clearing PRAM
    - resetting system manager (name? - hold down power button when reconnecting power cable, etc.)
    - Power Saver display and computer auto sleep are shut off (both on "never" - I regularly put it to sleep manually)
    - virus scans (Clam XAV)
I realize that this is a kitchen sink collection of symptoms, but these things may be related and if so, OS developers may want to be sure these problems are avoided in current versions. (Yes I will upgrade my OS soon...)

Thanks for checking in, Miriam - sorry to get testy about it.
The iMac's RAM is maxed out (2.5 GB)
Yes, the system log does report overtemp message to Power management prior to shutdown (today's log at end of post)
Where do I find normal temperatures for the system? What are the important parameters to watch and what sort of fixes are possible?
    iStat currently shows:
    HD 54° CPU 67° GPU 72° Incoming air 38° (???)
HD bay 54° GPU ambient 71° opt drive 49°
    ==========================================
Console.log was largely full of stuff about a bad flash drive I stuck in as a Hail Mary and failure of communication with a scanner (old HP, driver package installs a program which starts at launch which doesn't show up under Startup Items. Apparently the permission got mislaid, so I fixed permissions and this seems OK now. (Only included that because some of it shows up in System.log and it's not worth focusing on.)
[That all said, there is a software/OS component to the problem and it is graphics-related. The other night I was looking at some flash videos in a series and one in particular repeatedly caused shutdown, while others played normally: domain = jebhost.com /youtube/list.php?q=Henry+8.o&Submit=GO "The Tricycle Thief" only played through once out of about six tries.]

  • Desktop/Finder Issue

    Mac Pro (6-Core / 3.33MHz / 12GB RAM / 4x2TB West Dig Blk Cavs in Bays 1-4).
I have had one problem and one problem only with this computer from day 1 of opening the box up until now, 6 months later. When I power on the computer and sign in to my user account (the only account on this system), when I get to the desktop - one of two things always happens...
    1) Desktop fully loads, all my icons are in the upper right toolbar and everything is ready to go - but - when I open a Finder window, and click on anything listed on the left hand side (devices, places, search for) - there is anywhere from a 5-10 second to 1+ minute lag in time just to show me the contents with the dreaded beachball showing up.
    2) Desktop is really, really slow, doesn`t load 100% and feels like it can`t quite get there and then the beachball shows and everything freezes, so I have to cycle the power.
Also of note is that the black screen of death has been showing up every now and then, which seems strange to me.
This problem has occurred when I first got my Mac Pro and was using the Apple provided base memory and included Toshiba HD. And It`s happening with my OWC memory and WD HD`s.
I am based in Japan and feel AppleCare here is rather terrible compared to USA. Apple has replaced the original HD 2x. They`ve had me reinstall the OS. Reformat the drives. Repair disk permissions. Essentially do everything that multiple techs from USA and Japan could think of over the phone.
I sent the system into Apple a week ago and they sent it back to me yesterday complaining about my RAM being from third party and my HD`s not being the original they sent me. So this issue is now being forced down the path of blaming myself for wanting to upgrade my system with products that Apple do not manufacture themselves anyway - and/or - wanting to blame the manufacturers of those products.
I went to Apple Store in Ginza, which is way far from my house, and they want to have the computer sent back in for testing/repairs of the exact same things that were supposedly done the last time.
Is the Mac Pro, for all it`s glory, not able to handle 4 bays worth of drives? Is it taxing the system? I keep hearing that this could be RAM or Logic Board or other more ''important'' parts of the computer. But all my time lately is being spent with phone calls and emails and sending the computer in for repairs, etc.
I don`t see this issue with any other Mac I have touched. The same start up procedure and Finder window slowness does not seem to exist.

Spinning beachballs can be caused by many things, but one of the common reasons often overlooked is a corrupt dynamic link editor cache.
You can find instructions for this simple fix here:

  • Finder issue: Compress option missing from right-click menu and greyed out in File menu

How can this be, and - more importantly - what can I do to resolve this issue? Thanks.

You mean this ThisService?  Never heard of it before.
Why don't you create services using Automator (in /Applications)?  That's one of the things it is designed to do.  It has no problem with making sure they are properly created and installed in ~/Library/Services so that the finder can see them there under the conditions desgnated when you create them.  You don't even have to log out and back in.
Note, if you like using applescript you can use applescript in automator too.

  • Cannot bring up Finder preferences and general Finder issues in Yosemite

Since installing Yosemite, I've been having multiple issues with the Finder:
Finder seems to hang occasionally when trying to delete a file
Finder seems to hang occasionally when trying to empty the trash
When trying to open the Finder preferences, it either doesn't open or opens a blank panel (with nothing in it)
Looking at the Console when trying to opening the Finder prefs, I can see this Exception being logged:

    Can anyone help?

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Mountain lion finder issues?

Just bought 27" iMac a few weeks back.  How disappointed I was the it was a Mid-2011 build.  I've already bee told about hardware changes made since to resolve whatever issues.
Finder is beginning to crash often.  At first I thought it my be my TotalFinder.app causing issues but even when the app is not loaded, I'm finding the same glitches.  A window will freeze and I'm unable to select anything within it but I can close it, 98% of the time.
Hyperlinks that trigger "show in finder" scripts, or whatever they are, don't seem to do anything but at times, it the show the location provided the Finder window is already open and in most cases, in the right folder.
this is becoming very frustrating.  Especially so because it is NOT triggerring an error report.
Adding insult to injury, I was assured that this new quad-core CPU would blow the pants off my old 17" 2006 2 core.  Though some apps seem to run a little better, overall, very little gain.
How can I KNOW what may be running silent on my iMac ?   What could interfere with my Finder ? I do a lot of transfers between my new Mac, my old Mac, a couple of Win 7 PCs and both an Android phone and a tablet ( and sometime a Blackberry phone and tablet).  These data transfer take an over-excessive amount of time, Is there something wrong with my CPUs?  Even Flashdrive transfers ACTUALLY take 10x longer than the nearly 3 year old Win 7 Laptop.
I also can't pick up scanner nor fax from all-in-one  HP Laserjet pro.. Can that be connected to finder somehow?
Can anyone offer some advice?  Could all the above be realated to one thing?
    Please help.
    Thank you
    ML

    Hey GarlandM
thanks for the link.  When I set up (mid Sept.) that page was evidently not up.
    This helped.
I'll need to review the install settings but I think I may still have issues with permissions because it was originally set up with the office computer via ethernet.  When I tried to set things up for me, it would not allow it citing that I did not have permission.
I'll play with it in a bit and see what happens.
    Thanks a bunch!!
