Finder keeps "Not Responding" - am having to do hard shutdowns to reboot

I keep getting Apps and the Finder freezing and going into "Not Responding" mode.
I then have to reboot the machine by hold the power button down.
I've tried using the Disk Utilities app to repair the disks and fix  the permissions, but no luck.
What else might be causing this?

Does the machine make
Any type of hardware failure could be the issue, or it could be the system on the disk is damaged or corrupted in some way.
It sound like you need to isolate the fault by eliminating the variables.
Start by unplugging all non essential devices (like extra USB, Firewire disks, use a wired mouse, an Apple keyboard if possible etc) see if the freeze still happens.
Try booting to safe mode http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 (hold shift after the startup chime - the login window should say 'Safe Mode').
Do you have the grey software install disks that came with the Mac? They have 'Apple Hardware Test' that is designed to scan the system for memory faults & common hardware problems.
The grey disk will have the instructions printed on the disk I think it involves holding H at boot with the disk inserted. It takes a while to load from disk, then you run the test & see what the report says.
The best way to isolate the system (and it's disk) is to install a clean OS on another disk & see if it still happens when booted from that disk. If it still happens make sure the only connected disk is the 'new test' disk (to rule out hardware faults on the current disk). You can use an iPod or large USB stick for this but it will run really slowly due to the disk read/write speed (some older models don't support USB booting).
It could be file system corruption on the boot disk or on any other internal external disks, so make sure they check out with Disk Utilities verify/ repair disk feature.
/Applications/Utilities/Console will help you read log files, there may be a pattern that appears at the point of each lock up, make a note the time of freezes if you plan to look at logs - they are most confusing though

  • Finder will not respond

To cut a long story short, I got a video ipod and needed to upgrade my OSX to 10.3.4, I did so and all my applications work, I didn't lose anything and everything appears to be fine, however, my finder will not respond. If I right-click it in the dock it just displays "Finder not responding" and in the top tool bar nothing appears apart from the relevant menus to any application (but not the finder menus).
If I go into Word and try to save something, I can see my Hard disk and desktop folders, but they don't appear on the desktop itself.
I'm quite frustrated, please help if you have any ideas.
    Thank you.
    G3 Laptop   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

    Hello again Colin
Sounds like time for plan B.
    1. Put your OS 10.3.4 startup disk in the machine.
    2. Turn the machine off using the power button.
    3. Wait a few seconds.
    4. Turn the machine on whilst holding down the 'c' key. It will take longer than usual to start up but should start using the operating system on the disk.
    5. Once up and running take your finger off the 'c' key (you cn take it off earlier than this but as this is your first time keep it there).
    6. In the finder open applications/utilities/disk utility.
    7. Select the hard drive icon that appears in the top of the left hand directory window.
    8. Click on repair permissions.
    9. Go and make a cup of tea (if this is the first time you have done this it will take some time).
    10. If you get any red messages once permissions have been repaired, unlikely, run disk permissions again until all appears OK (no redness!)
    11. Restart your machine using the apple menue comand in the normal way (touch no keys).
This is the maintenance/repair permissions process we are talking about. It is best to do this (from your hard drive when not having problems) before and after any software installations, including software update, and on a monthly/6 wekly basis in any case.
If this does not work we will need to resort to you getting hold of a copy of disk warrior. But post back if the above process does not help. The recent Itunes update has presented a few challenges (whith an unlikely solution!) but we need your finder to be at least available to fix that problem if you have it.

  • How do you shut down a computer safely when Finder is not responding?

I've been having some problem with my Mac OS X lately where Aperture has been "not responding". Stupidly, I used forced shutdown of that program until I learned how bad this is.  So today I'm working on my mac (trying to learn what's wrong with Aperture) and the  beachball for Finder starts spinning and the program is not responding. How do I restart or shut down without damaging anything? I could "force quit" but don't know if this is bad for Finder, as it is bad for Aperture.  Help!

    Hi suzyfromks,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
If a single application is unresponsive, you don't have any other option but to Force Quit.
Then I would suggest quitting your other open applications normally, and starting the computer in Safe Mode as explained in this article.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1199
Regarding Aperture, I would suggest making sure you have a Time Machine backup of your computer, and follow these troubleshooting steps:

I hope this information helps ....

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • Finder DOES NOT Respond after Restart, Or Shut Down

I am running an iMac G5 on OS X 10.5.4, After a shut down or restart, Finder does not respond, The only thing on my desktop is My HD and Chosen wallpaper. I can launch Apps from the Dock, but not folders from the dock, Not Downloads folder, Documents Folder, Just Applications, which is weird because they are in finder too! Mail starts up when I log in so I can access Mail, I use Firefox, When I click on it in the dock it starts up no problem, after a while Finder does respond, I get all my icons back on my desktop and can access folders. I have Cleared System Cache, Browsers Cache, I ran Disk Utility and REPAIRED Disk permissions. No help. Short of RE-Installing Mac OS X, What Should I do? Is this happening to anyone else??

I am having the same problem!
I have tried the following: deleting the com.apple.finder.plist, deleting the com.apple.sidebar.plist, I have reinstalled the 10.5.5combo update, I have deleted all of my photoshop preferences (possible solution from another thread), and it is still doing it!

  • Firefox keeps (not responding) how do I fix it?

Firefox keeps (not responding) was using 6.0 and saw online that someone switched back to 5.0 so I tried that, still not working. Also saw on your help page that other people are having this problem. Any solutions?

You're not the only one. Despite other comments, it's not a RAM issue. I have been having the problem for a week. I sent numerous complaints to Facebook, but their IT staff is either poorly trained or grossly understaffed, because nothing gets done, and you never get a response.
My home page loads, and that's it. I've tried it on three computers in my home, and in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and get the same result in all three, as well as on my other computers.
I hope they will eventually resolve the issue, but it's MADDENING. I got my Facebook access back on Thursday night, and it worked for the weekend, but I lost it this morning again.

  • Finder is not responding

I'm having trouble with my macbook. The computer will turn on, but the beach ball will spin continuously after I log in. None of my desktop folders load, and when I try command-alt-esc it says that Finder is not responding. I cannot open finder or dropbox but can open other applications. I can use a web browser, but it will crash if I try to attach a file in an email. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

I am having the same problem too!! Its recently just slowly gone down hill worked fine then over a period of like a week its gotten to were i can do anything. I need to make to burn things and before it worked fine then after like the past couple of weeks each time i have tried it will take forever to pull up the folder it will take forever to bring up the option to burn onto a CD. My iphoto will not burn CDs anymore (doesnt help me since im a photographer and need this) And I cant burn CDs from Itunes anymore either. Now today I cant pull up and folder on my desktop I click my apps to pull up in a folder it wont. I cant get onto dropbox. This is very stressful.

  • My Dock is frozen? Finder will not respond

My Dock is frozen;  I have Force Quit all apps, restarted and can open apps indirectly through links or some reopened by themselves after restarting, but Finder will not respond and neither will other apps in current Dock.  Any suggestions how to resolve this?
I've seen on another site to go through Terminal, write 'killall Dock' and this will resolve but sounded dicey???

Killall Dock is an incredibly safe thing to do. However after re-starting if the issue is still there then do both Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets do each 2-3 x, sometimes they don't work the first time. Then post back and see if your issue is still there.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • I have 30  folders opened on my screen that will not go away. Finder is not responding. Please help, I have 30  folders opened on my screen that will not go away. Finder is not responding. Please help

    Greetings
I am a new Mac user and I have a new Macbook Air.
Currently, I have about 30 folders opened up on my screen. Finder is not responding and there is a multi-color disc in place of my pointer. Even when I try and press the power button, the shut down screen comes on, I press shut down, but it does not power down. When I enter my password, the folders pop right back up. Can anyone help me?

Try holding the Option+Command+escape (esc) keys at the same time to bring up the Force Quit Applications window. Select Finder/Relaunch and see if that helps.

Spent about 4 hours yesterday trying to figure out why bookmarks is behaving so poorly with such a slow response. The response time is directly related to the number of bookmarks in each folder. It takes 8 seconds to process a bookmark. The 8 seconds occur between an sqlite shm unlock and the next sqlite lock.
At the start, the first and 3rd systems were behaving OK, the 2nd system was responding poorly. Did all the usual basic, restarted FF, rebooted system, etc.
THEEEENNNNN--the 3rd system started acting up. Tried tracing, etc. -- didn't see anything specific. Messed around with systems 2 and 3 and ,THEEENNNN, the both started working OK!
'''And about a minute later, the first system crapped out! '''
Screwed around another 1/2 hour and THEEEENNNN, all 3 systems started working OK. Cannot recreate the problem and I don't have a clue as to what I did to correct the problem!
All 3 systems are on the same internal network--192.168...... This leads me to believe that there is some kind of cross communications between systems. I do have Sync turned off, so I don't think that's the problem. But what.....????
