Finder lags on opening files

I've got a brand new Macbook Pro fully spec'ed to the bext specifications, the reason I have this is becasue I was experiencing lag on opening files on my old Macbook, and figured this was because it wasn't Solid State and a bit old, so imagine my suprise when I had the same problem on my brnad new Mac.
It's not all the time, some folders seem to take about 30 seconds to open, and I get a little spinning wheel bottoom left. Occassionaly if I clikc off the folder and back onto it, it shows the concents, but not always.
It's very frustrating, and really slows down my work flow, but the most annoying thing about this is I told the Apple salesman about the issue and he said the Solid State would fix this, now having done a little bit of research I can see it's a know issue.
Anyone got any fixes, or do Apple have any plans to correct this?

With Mavericks some users are experiencing slow Finder windows the first time it is accessed. Some see similar behavior with the file selector. It isn't everyone and interestingly two people with the same computer model might see different behaviors. It must be driving Apple programmers nuts trying to track down the cause.
For what it is worth, between home and work I use 6 different computers ranging from a 2007 iMac to a 2013 mini and of the 6 one of them exhibits this behavior consistently. Another (a notebook) intermittently. The others, not at all.

Terminal command to find most recently opened files

Hello,
I have a terminal command (bash) that will find the last opened file (singular) from a given directory. "$(ls -t | head -n1)"
I want to be able to search for multiple "last opened" files, say 20; I also want to be able to search either all user files, or at least direct the command to search within subfolders of a top level folder.
Can anyone help. I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

This will find all files last used today. Reference. File Meta Data attributes. Curious about a file … mdls filename.

Error message: "There is no default application specified to open this document." How do I find app. to open file??

I am trying to NETGEAR software for a Wireless USB adapter. When I put cd in and click autorun.exe file it says "There is no default application specified to open this document." How do I find app. to open file??

I'm sure that we can get it to work, but be prepared that it just MAY have to go back, if for example it requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later - I found a lot of networking USB dongles seem to require OS X 10.4.11 or later. But Netgear are one of the better device manufacturers, so I'm hopeful it'll work just fine.

Bridge CS4 Lags When opening File:

Hello folks,
I am a system administrator for the Savannah College of Art and Design. We are using Active Directory and have about 600 seats of CS4 installed on our PC's. The problem is, when a user (netuser or local admin) tries to open a file in Adobe Bridge, Bridge lags for a ridicoulously long time (1-2 minutes) before opeing the file. After the initial lag, all file browzing resumes as normal. However, this lag happens every time Bridge is reopened. I have tried clearing the Adobe cache and preferences and disabling all the startup services as instructed in the troubleshooting section, but the problem is still present. Oddly enough, I found that unplugging the network cable from the PC fixes the problem and Bridge is just as snappy as it should be.
My question is, why is our internet connection causing Bridge to lag so much and how can we resolve this issue?

Hello again Curt,
We currently do not have any network printers connected to our computers. Bridge is definitely searching for something on the network, but I have no idea what that is. I have tried looking for possible network queries that Bridge may be getting stuck on, but I have not been able to find anything conclusive. Pretty much everything I've found suggests clearing the cache, resetting the preferences or disabling startup services. I've tried all these things but Bridge is still running like molasses on our computers. As per your last suggestion, I've also tried making the cache larger, but the problem still occurs. Besides, that shouldn't be a problem in the first place because we don't have very many pictures on these computers. I think the problem is that it's looking in places it shouldn't be for photos that probably don't even exist.
If there is anyone out there who knows how to disable Bridge CS4 from searching certain network locations, or what it queries on the network I'd greatly appreciate any feedback.

Photoshop CS5 - win 7 - 8.1 64 bit - Lag to open files from lan

Hello,
we have got a problem with photoshop. If we open a file from lan, photoshop wait some seconds before open it, even with very little pics. It has a lag of some seconds before start to open it. With local files is the same.
If I erase the recent files list and then I try to open a local file, it opens immediately. If I open a lan file and then I open a local file, the problem returns.
It looks like a recent file list problem. I tried to set it to 0 but nothing changes, because it save the recent list anyway but simply it doesn't show it.
I tried to disable the suitcase extensis plug-in (the only plug-in we have added), I tried to disable kaspersky antivirus, but nothing.
We have this problem with all 3 workstations, 2 with win 7 64bit and one with win 8.1 64 bit. With the older station the lag is bigger (5-10 seconds for every image). With the newest station 1 sec.
Is there any solution?
Is there anything to do for stop the recent file list to work?

Are they on the same router are there different OS, adapter speeds file system involved. On my home network where my windows machine are connected to the same router with 1GHz ethernet a 20MB CR2 file takes only a second or two open in ACR.

Finder windows not opening, file transfer box not showing.

If I go to open Finder from the dock, or using Command + N a new window doesn't open, I have to open it using harddrive icon off my desktop. Also, when transferring files from drive to drive (either on my computer or across the network) the box showing how far the transfer has progressed doesn't turn up. These are causing me significant problems, so if anyone can help that would be hugely appreciated!
Oh, as I've been writing this about 30 finder windows opened at once, so it appears soemthing is delaying the response, although not regurlary, as they all opened at once. They do now open but the file transfer isn't showing still. My computer has been on an hour and a half for finder to sort itself out, it's ridiculous!

Hi MLansdell, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your Finder works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

I have a couple of Numbers files open. How do I find their location on disk?

While you are viewing the file path at the top of the screen, following Wayne's directions, you can click on the second line to open a Finder window that shows the file you are working on in its folder.

Finder behaviour in 'Open file' dialogs

I use various computers, all with 10.4.3, but they do not all behave the same when using Open and Save dialogs within applications. On some machines when I perform Open or Save, I can click on the required folder if it is visible on the desktop and this becomes the destination in the dialog box. On others this feature does not work. Is there a way to switch it on or off? I can find nothing in Help or Finder preferences.

In forms 6i i used the below code to open any application.
I have a table with application path and ext of the file. This is for each user. Because the installation of application in users desktop in different path.

Wouldn't it make sense to place it in the server manager / shares section?
I mean, second to creating or finding a share, isn't this what most users would be after?
For like 20 years we've been trained to right click to find stuff Microsoft is hiding, and right click don't do nothin' here. You gotta go hunting under tools. Or, forget the new half-baked interface with half of what you need and go old school,
direct to Start - Computer..Right Click.. whoops... that doesn't exist anymore.....

Bookmark Open File Action not working on MAC OSX

We are getting the following error when trying to open different files that start find in Finder:
could not find an application to open the file 'xxxxx'
We tried a simple MAC OS Application.app file, a terminal app script and in both cases we get the above error. These same files start up without issue on a click in Finder.
The Open File action "DOES" work on an Microsoft Office File... but does not work for a Mac Application.App file or a AppleScript script file.
Can anyone share how to get Open File to work with some type of script file or application file on the MAC OS with Adobe Reader 11 ?

We ended up having to create an App on the MAC OS with an "associated" file type and then use the Bookmark Open File Action on files of that type. This followed what worked for opening Office files on the MAC from the Bookmark Open File Action.
My question was ... on Windows we could use the Bookmark Open File Action to open up "applications" or "bat scripts" directly... but this does not appear to be supported on the MAC. We could not "start" an app or a script directly from the Bookmark Open File Action. We had to set the action to open a file and then handle that file in the associated application we created for that filetype on the MAC.

Corporate Win7/Office 2010 | Severe Lag when opening Office 2010 files over the network

Good Evening Everyone,
I work in a corporate environment for one of the top banks in the country (USA). We recently upgraded our computers to Windows 7. (The image has office 2010 included in the build)
I've been experiencing some severe lag when opening Office files over the network. Let me start by saying I've researched a lot and have yet to find a solution that works or even makes much of an improvement.
Notes: My laptop is new (64-bit Win 7 Enterprise). The remote desktop where the files lie is new as well. (64-bit Win 7 Enterprise) Both computers have good hardware and more than enough juice to handle applications.
There are certain files I work on along with other co-workers that we store on a computer within the office. We simply create shortcuts to the files on our local machines and make changes, etc. from there. However, after this upgrade, every time I try to
open a file on the remote computer, it takes over a 1 minute to load. I've spoken to our support team who sent someone out and confirmed it's not the network.
Both computers are on the same subnet as well. I've changed the trust center settings on both the client computers and "server" to trust any computer on the network. I have also changed the network card's speed from "Auto Negotiate" to
full duplex 100mbps with no luck.
I am out of options here and in desperate need for a fix. Even saving changes to a file we work on takes forever. 50% of the time when I close a spreadsheet, the title bar has a not responding message and takes a minute to eventually close.
PS: Extra Info : All computers run McAfee AV and use McAfee for disk encryption. I've confirmed all computers are up-to-date in every respect with the AV software.

Open the Tools menu and choose Folder Options...
Select the File Types tab.
Select the extension (for example DOC, or XLS) of the file that is slow to open.
In the Details section, click [Advanced], and another dialog box will open.
In the Actions section, click Open then click [Edit...], and another dialog box will open.

My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.

I have files that may have been created in various versions of Illustrator. We need to be able to open them, but all we have is CS6 suite. I have called and been told that "technicians at adobe" could perform a paid service to find out what the files were created in and get them to be useable in InDesign 6, but I'd need an email address that was registered to our software to give the help desk person. After finding the correct email address, different adobe help number people told me to come here to ask as there is no phone support. Can anyone get me to an adobe technician that can provide a price quote for finding out what created these files and for getting them converted? Thanks.

Sorry, I understood you to say you had the whole CS6 suite, which includes Illustrator.
As far as finding out what the files are, sometimes you can look at them in a text editor to figure this out. See below; the, Creator Tool line. Not every software package makes it this easy, though.
