Finder locks up when attempting to access files on external drive

HI all,
I am experiencing a sinking feeling at the moment - I have been editing large amounts of video in a particular project and on recent captures I found I only had about 5gb left on my external Maxtor 300gb hard drive, which aborted the last capture, reporting "dropped frames" in final cut pro.
History has shown this happens when the hard drive gets close to running out of space.
I went to finder to delete some unneccessary files but when I try to, finder locks up and does not allow me to access any of the files. I believe this is also to do with the fact that the space is getting low, but how do I get into the files to delete them when finder won't let me do so?
At the same time I am hoping this is not a hard drive failure in the making...

Ok - for a while there, the hard drive would not come up on the desktop - but now on a re-boot of the compter, or if I disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it, a message comes up with three buttons which say:
Initialize
Ignore
Eject
Sound like the hard drive has died?

How do I find out what that error code is tring to tell me?

Sadly, I have had this issue as well. Last eyar Iit got to the point I couldn't copy at all. From what I recall, Apple told me it could be one of many things. A bad internal drive, bad permissions, a bad external drive, a bad firewire port, a bad cable, bad memory, and on and on. I never did figure it out, but I do know my hard drive did crash a month later. However, having said that, I own a new computer, and last week, it started again. Still have not figured out what is going on. Good luck.

Frozen finder when attempting to transfer files to external USB 2.0 drive.

Here's my problem. I have an external Firewire 400/800/USB 2.0 drive that I've been using on my IBook G4 since my Powerbook G4 died. On the PB, I used it as FW 800 and I never had any problems at all transferring files to the drive.
Now that I'm on the IBook, almost every other file transfer that I attempt gets hung up. And I cannot stop the transfer and restarting the finder does nothing for me. Literally, the transfer begins and just freezes and then it's straight beach ball from there. I've tried getting answers to what could be causing this problem on various other forums, but the issue still exists. Hence, I am at the source now.
Funny thing about the whole issue is that it doesn't matter what size the file is. It could be 500mb or 10mb. When it feels like freezing, it just does. I have tried re-installing the USB drivers that were included in the 10.4.10 updated but that did nothing.
Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this? I'm at my rope's end right now. Thank you.

I also wanted to add that one of the suggested solutions I was given was to uninstall all application enhancers from my system, which did help an ancillary issue that I was having with my dock not appearing, but as far as the frozen finder situation, no dice.

Itunes accesses files on external drive but not showing in finder

I'm running OS 10.6.8. I have an external NTFS drive that I read and wirte to using NTFS mounter. I have files that iTunes show are in a folder on the external drive. iTunes will even play the songs. When I navigate to that folder in Finder there are no files displayed. I connected the drive to a PC and navigated to the folder. Windows says the file (folder) is corrupt. How is it possible that iTunes can read the files? How can I get read & write access to my files?

You'll have to try to repair the drive on a PC.

Some things will still be readable when corruption occurs, the big problem is when writing occurs when there's corruption.

I've read through a few similar posts, but the solutions don't seem to fit my problem. I was moving some files around on an external drive that I've been using for a year with no problems. While moving one file to another folder (within the drive, not between my computer and the drive), it froze up. After waiting for 20 minutes or so, I pulled the drive out and restarted the computer.
Now when I plug the drive back in, it shows up as usual, but when I click on it, Finder crashes immediately. I ran disk utility repair, and it says "The volume appears to be ok" in green, but it still crashes finder when I try to open it. Based on the advice of another post, I ran Console, and copied what I thought to be the relevant portion of the transcript, though I don't know what any of it means ("Uzak" is the name of the drive):

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Can't access files on external drive clone

I've cloned internal drives several times before with no problems but I'm having trouble this time.
When I attempt to boot from the external clone it reaches a point where it asks for my admin password (never seen that before) and then it refuses to recognize the correct password (the window shakes its head 'no') and I am unable to do anything but restart from the internal drive. I know my password is correct because I had to use it to enable cloning with Carbon Copy Cloner. I even tried a second time after switching to no password for the admin account. Same result.

As you will see from the thread, I couldn't resolve it and ended up wiping the partition and recloning as per the advice given me. If you find another way around it, post back here. It rather defeats the object of having a 'clone' if when you need it it's unusable.

Finder freezes when attempting to access a "shared" external hard drive (wireless via Airport Extreme)

Finder freezes. As soon as I click onto my "shared" external hard drive (3TB WD - wireless via Airport Extreme), finder immediately freezes / eternally spinning beach ball (until I restart finder). Can still access wirelessly on another Mac (not on Yosemite).
Please help!

Finder and iTunes stall when attempting to access ext. firewire HD

Since I upgraded to 10.4.10, the Finder, iTunes, and other apps that are attempting to access files on the external hard drive completely beachball/stall when waking the hard drive from sleep. Additionally, the dock and menu bar bork.
The only fix is to unplug the hard drive (without properly ejecting it!), and instantly, all the apps become responsive.
Anyone have information on this. My external hard drive, which contains my iTunes music and other files, has become virtually useless.

Same thing is happening to me.. Both at home on my Powerbook G4 and work on my G5.
Was working perfectly. Both systems running 10.4.10.
Lacie 80gig FW400 drive.
Thinking it was the drive failing I promptly cloned it.
DiskWarrior and Disk Utility show no signs of error. I've reformatted, Zeroed all data many times. The drive 'appears' to be fine. I have copied my music back on to the drive; but it Hangs finder.
I've tried to re-import the music through iTunes to the drive. Again, gets about halfway and hangs finder.
Occasionally Disk Utility will return : "error could not unmount disk" when checking it out with Repair/Verify Sometimes it's fine.

The next day, when I went to print, after selecting the number of copies etc, I clicked on "print". The next screen is the progress report "Printing xxx.file.", and nothing happens. The computer is completely lock and I have to reboot. I can print excel and word files, but no pdf files, either from the internet or one of my documents. I have tried saving the internet pages and then printing later, but that doesn't work either. One suggestion was to go to edit, preferences, security enhanced and turn off enable. Finder locking up when browsing Time capsule hard drive
I am able to browse the hard drive preview some videos or open files for around 5-10 mins then Finder locks up. Internet still works and I can relaunch Finder and then works for a while again. It sounds like the hard drive is just going to sleep. I watch some films directly off of the hard drive through VLC and these just stop wilst viewing them.
I am on 10.6.2 working on the 5GHZ channel on dual band time capsule.
It is really annoying I have tried a few things like resetting the DCHP Lease. But it seems to be specific to the hard drive as the internet still works fine. It is really annoying as it jams up the finder really awkwardly.

Are you browsing/viewing files in Time Machine backups on your Time Capsule, or files you've put there yourself?
If the files are Time Machine backups, use the Time Machine interface (the "Star Wars" display), via the Time Machine icon in your dock (or in your Applications/Utilities folder) to see what's there. Backups are not meant to be used; they're duplicates that can be restored in case of a problem with the originals on your system.

Thanks so much for addressing my question. Note that the site (www.xula.edu) was working with Safari this morning, but not this afternoon. I also have now been able to access it with Chrome (remember I could not access the site with Chrome initially). Essentially one time while the site was loading on Chrome I clicked another link on the site and opened a new tab for the link- the original page then loaded and now continues to load. I've been trying to do the same with Safari but the page loads and "goes to white" to quickly.
Other notes: I've powered off my iPad (did not help) and restarted my iPad (also did not help). I can also access all other links (to other www.xula.edu related pages on the site using Safari - I find them via a google search)- it's just the home page that loads then goes to "white screen" very quickly. We develop a server-side application which receives incoming https connections using self-signed certificate. It was all ok while we were using Windows 7 or Windows 2008 as OS, but when our clients started installing Windows 8 as server OS they encountered
big problem: application got unavailable in few hours after start.
In event logs we have following:
A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key. The error code returned from the cryptographic module is 0x8009030d. The internal error state is 10001.
After restart, application recreates certificate and all works normal few hours till next fatal error.
This
article did not help us. And I repeat that this error appears only on Windows 8 (we tested on Windows 8.1). Windows 2012 Server we did not test yet.
How we can solve this problem?

Since this article released in 2008,I suspect the code mentioned in this article doesn't supprot Windows 8.

Hi All,
I am getting the error 'An error occurred in lock management when attempting to set a lock on table SWWWIHEAD.'
Sometimes the workitem is not created by the Workflow due to above error & this happens rarely but keeps coming.
cany anyone guide or help me how to correct this problem.Is it happening due to my custom code making locks on the above table?

I think you should not use any code to lock the table SWWWIHEAD. Please let us know why you are writing code to put lock on this table.
