Finder makes fan run loudly and continuously.

I've had my MacBook for only a few months now and I am having a problem with the fan. It starts running loudly when I am doing simple tasks, such as viewing a webpage which contains no flash, video, or similar content. The fan does not stop running unless I put my computer to sleep or restart it. I have found that by relaunching the Finder, the fan almost instantly slows down back to its normal state. This concerns me as this has been occuring more frequently over the past two weeks. Is there some sort of fix to this instead of having to relaunch the Finder every time?

Yes you can continue to play games but heat is the bane of electronics and in time there will be a cost.  When is hard to say, but I can put it this way, a fan running constantly at high speed is more likely to fail sooner than one at a slower speed.
Ciao.

  • Fan runs loud and continuously

Hi- The fan on my Macbook 2.1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz runs continuously and loudly from about 3 minutes after booting up.  Activity monitor shows nothing unusual, only Firefox and Activity Monitor using any CPU (very small percentages).  It has been a noisy fan for awhile, but used to come on only after prolonged use.  Any suggestions will be welcomed.  Thanks -Howard

If you have not already done so....reset the SMC....

  • Will running games that make the fan run loudly and the computer heat up damage my machine?

On my Macbook Air running Yosemite 10.10.3, with 4 GB RAM, 251 GB storage (170 GB free), a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and Intel HD 6000 1536 MB graphics card, when I play games such as Batman Arkham City, I experience very smooth gameplay with high fps. The only thing that worries me is when I play, the laptop heats up very much and the fan runs pretty loudly. Even with old, less intensive games like GTA SA, the computer gets pretty hot and the fan runs loudly. Is this damaging the computer, or can I continue to play these games?
    Thanks.

  • NEW HARD DRIVE - FANS RUNNING LOUD AND RED LIGHT

I've just installed another hard drive in the lower bay of my G5 1.8. I took one drive out and inserted the new one, leaving the original hard disk with the operating system on where it was.
As soon as I pressed the "on" button the machine powered up but with the fans on very loud and a red light on inside the machine.
The G5 starts up fine. The new hard drive is recognised.
Any ideas what's gone wrong as it wasn't behaving like this before?
    Thanks in anticipation

Hi gravenors, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
You could try checking that the clear plastic air deflector has been replaced correctly.
If it seems to be in place, but the fan and red LED are still on, please post again - as there are further things to try.

  • Fan runs loudly and upgrades

So mac isn't really famous for having upgradeable products, but is there anyway or anywhere where I can change out hardware on my imac? I have a 20" G5 and I use it for Photoshop and Z brush and it works fine for that, but if I play a game the game play tends to jump. I'm not great with computers and I'm new to mac so I don't know if or where I can change the graphics or video card.
Also, the fan seems to run really loud at times? Does is seem this way with anyones else? It's done this before and I had to get the power supply changed... twice.

  • 15" MacBook Pro runs hot, fan is loud, and incredibly low battery life

My 15" MBP was bought in March or April (can't remember) from Singapore Apple Store. Here are the stats:
    MacBook Pro 15-Inch, Late 2011
    Memory 8 GB 12222 MHz DDR3
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Also I'm using about 1/2 of the available 750 GB of storage.
    Here's what's up:
    1. The fans boot immediately after the computer is turned on and never stop, making everything much too loud...like a plane is taking off or something.
    2. The computer is WAY too hot. Right now I'm running Astrill, Chrome, Activity Monitor, and System Utility, and when I put my hands on the thing it feels like my fingers are going to melt.
    3. The battery life, even at a full charge, is about an hour overall, which ***** for so, so many reasons.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. I took it to the Shanghai Genius Bar, but I think that the language barrier is impeding my ability to really say what's wrong. I backed up, and they wiped the hard drive, re-loaded the OS and put all my old stuff back on the computer. They also deleted SOMETHING from the Preferences part of the library, but I don't know what it was. Everything runs much faster now, but the fan, the heat, and the battery are still having their issues.
    2. I've checked the "all processes" CPU usage. There's nothing unusual (as far as I can tell), so I'm at a serious loss as to say why the computer is running so hard. Even with all the processing running as you see below, the fan's still blasting and I've lost 50% battery life in the past 40 minutes.
    3. I've tried the fix that requires deleting com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist.lockfile. It changed the way the desktop looked and absolutely nothing else.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me! I'm a graphic designer and often run the CS6 Suite. (Currently, however, I am NOT running any Adobe programs and I'm still experiencing the problems.) It's really important that I am able to run Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign at once, and it CAN, but with the heat problems I'm having without ANY of the graphics stuff running, it worries me.

Just took another look at iStat Menus (I've only had it for a couple of days - I used to use the old iStat Pro widget) and it seems as if you can make fan speed defaults and use them instead of relying on your MBPs sensors to take care of the fans... see...
Might want to use that 'medium' speed (there by default as I know I didn't add it) and keep an eye on your temps. If you start heating up to much, go back to the 'Default'.

  • Mac mini Intel Core Duo fan very loud and runs at high speed all the time.

I purchased an "Open box" Mac mini Intel Core Duo, 1.66Ghz, 2G ram, 80G HD and SD a few days ago from Fry's.
It runs beautifully except the fan is very loud compared to any Mac my family has ever had. It is so loud that we were thinking of putting it under the desk.
The fan runs constantly, and I mean all the time, at a high speed. You can really feel the air coming out the exhaust vents. The case is always cool to the touch as is the exhaust air.
My aunt bought a similar Mac mini (But only 512Mb ram) the same day. Her's is very quiet. The case feels just slightly warm, not unlike other Mac mini's I've seen.
Should my Mac mini's fan be running this way?
    Thanks,
    llulua
BTW: The "open box" was sealed with a Fry's label and it said that this had a new warranty. Yet, checking the serial number, it said that it had about 260 days left. I guess Fry's is backing it?
Also, someone told me that perhaps the main wire from the fan to the logic board is disconnected.

eMac 1Ghz, iBook 500 dual usb, Mac mini 1.66Ghz Intel Core Duo 2g ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Since you have 2 gigs of memory, my thoughts are that when the party (Fry's or the origianl purchaser) upgraded the memory, they neglected to reattach the wire at the front of the Mini under the IR receptor at the right front corner that regulates the fan speed. This wire must be unattached in order to upgrade the memory, and is probably why the original person brought it back, because of the fan noise resulting from failing to reattach the wire. If that wire is left unattached, the fan runs continually at high speed to protect the CPU and system in general. If you do not want to use a putty knife to open the Mini, take it back to Fry's and ask someone who is Mac savvy to open it and reattach the small plastic receptacle at the end of the wire into its socket at the right front of the machine. When I go to Fry's, I am always concerned because the employees allow people to pry keys off of the Apple notebooks, so don't expect that their employees to know or care about anything Mac.

  • XServe fans running fast and loud

    Good morning
I have searched the information base and tried a few suggestions without success.  Hoping for another solution here.
I have an Intel based XServe (2008) (OS 10.6.8) whose fans are running faster (and therefore louder) than they have previously.  This follows on the heels of a power outage (two of them actually) here at school, though the server is behind a UPS.  The system identifier light is also blinking in a particular pattern - 4 flashes and a pause repeating.
The server is up and running, teachers are connecting to it just fine, the RAID is intact and online, the drives all look good according to Disk Utility.  So, functionally, everything looks OK - the fans are just running faster and louder than before - noticibly louder than the other Intel XServe in the rack.  The server is at the top of the enclosed rack with a space below it as it has been for the last 4 years.
This summer I took all the XServes out of the rack, opened them up, and blew the dust out of them (including a moth - truly a bug in the system), so the all the airways are clean and clear.
I have tried the suggestions I could find on this forum:
         restarted a bunch of times
shut down and disconnect everything (including power) for a period of time
reset the PMU/SMC or whatever it is called doing the front panel buttons with the blue lights on the lower row
reset the PMU/SMC or whatever it is called by holding down the power button while disconnected from power
I have installed iStat Pro and the temperatures are averaging around mid- to upper- 30°C and the fans are running around 3000 RPM .  The temperatures aren't signifcantly different that the other XServe, but the fans are running about twice the speed.
I had to reformat the RAID earlier this weekend and copy over the data files from backup and reassign permissions, but the server was running quietly after that was all finished.  It seems to be post-powerbump that the fans became noisy.
Sorry for the long post, but I tried to include all the pertinent information.  I would have tossed in photos and videos if I could have!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    TIA
    Greg

Did a little more searching about setting up LOM on the XServe and I think I have it figured out now.
I assigned a unique (different) IP address to Network 1 in the LOM dialogue box in Configure Server menu of Server Monitor since I only have Ethernet 1 enabled and linked to a switch using a unique (different) IP address for network traffic between the XServe and my clients.
I can now see (via Server Monitor remotely) that I have a dead blower in my fan array which, upon closer inspection, is also evident in the iStatPro display (one fan running at 18 RPM).  Hence the blinking system identifier light and the other fans running faster and harder (and noisier).
Oddly enough, I have a replacement fan array in a box of XServe spare parts.  I now have a weekend task.
Thanks for all the information to be found and the people participating in this forum.  Love it.

  • Often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive

I also have a MacPro3,1 (2009) I believe and just started experiencing similar issues as described here.
I have scheduled sleep and start cycles and often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive or I find the computer booted in to disk utility mode.
I also often loose ethernet connectivity and have to try renewing DHCP lease several times before it will finally work.
Has anyone found solutions for this. I have looked at the console errors right before shutdown and don't really see anything fishy. Here are the last couple of lines before it looks like it shutdown.

Mac Pro early 2009 is Mac Pro4,1, anyway, I think you need to boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, then select startup volume and run repair disk.
Xcode is the latest one, by the way?

  • Apple macbook won't boot up and only fans running loud

    Hi,
I am having a big problem in my laptop, it's not display anything, and when i press on power button only fans running aloud, and the charger, battery working!
    please help me!

    I live in Palestine
Unfortunately, we do not have an agent or a local Apple store.
do you help me identify the problem exactly?
    thanks

  • Macbook Pro fan running constantly and CPU running slow

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2010 2.3 i7 that has started running really slow and the fan is running constantly.
In activity monitor it shows a kernel_task running constantly at around or above 200%.
I have tried all the regular tasks.  PRam reset, SMC reset and nothing seems to fix it.
I have also tried a system reinstall to no avail.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but from what I have read, the kernel_task might be trying to slow my CPU down because it thinks it is being overworked?
Maybe the fans are also being activated because it thinks the computer is too hot?
Anyway, if anyone has any idea as to what I can do to figure out what is going on, let me know.  Thanks

  • Mac Mini fan running loudly after Safari upgrade

Mac Mini 2GHz is around 2 months old. All been fine until yesterday. When running Safari (it seems) and not necessarily heavy usage fan starts runningvery loudly. In the previous 2 months NEVER heard the fan or at least it's been very quiet, so am quite concerned. It appears that this has coincided with updating to the very latest Safari release 3.1.1.
Anyone else having similar problem and/or advice?
    thanks
    D

The new Safari release supposedly has some issues with Flash media files and with Windows Media files -- and will require updates of the helper programs that display those formats.
Does the fan run loudly when you visit sites with such files? Or does it also run loudly if all you visit is sites with no video files on them?

  • Is it bad to have the fan running loud all the time

the fan on my macbook runs loud and long at times. is this bad for the machine?

Is it possible to have 2 threads running at the same
time at different times eg 1 repeats every 20
miliseconds and the other 40 for example. Yes.

  • Latest Leopard upgrade makes fan run continuously

After doing the latest Leopard upgrade, the fan on my G5 now runs continuously. It always would come on for a bit, then stop for a much longer period. Anyone know of a way to stop this, short of reinstalling the old original Leopard, and never again doing upgrades? Thanks for any help

Well, I do recall that activity monitor trick working well for fixing a laptop that ran all the time. It was looking for a printer that wasn't there. But the SMU trick is new for me. I didn't know the exact age, but pull the fan etc out and found the button. Actually the button said PMU (not SMU) reset, and I pressed it and restarted the computer. The fan was off for a while, but then it came back. I may try it again, since it seemed to have some effect.
    Thanks for the suggestions

  • Sleeping G5 often makes fans run full blast and machine unresponsive

the only thing new lately is that I installed Leopard 10.5.3 on my dual 2.0 GHz G5 tower.
I usually sleep my machine all the time
now it's a crapshoot whenever I sleep it whether or not it will go to sleep normally, or freeze in a state of screenless unresponsiveness with the fans running on full blast with no way to stop except a hard shut down or power kill
other than this the machine is literally working just fine. Never interferes with my work.
I don't know if this is 10.5.3 related or not, but I do wonder.
I started up from an applecare disc and did a full diagnostic and everything checked out
I guess I'll have to test Tiger sometime again but that'll be a pain because I'm already addicted to Leopard
I just hope this old faithful tower isn't going dead on me. and I wish there was some official word if this was just a 10.5 thingy

I believe I have solved this problem for now.
I opened up my G5 and used compressed air to blow out all the months of dust buildup in the machine.
I re-seated every single removable component inside (RAM, PCI cards, graphics card, etc)
I also pushed the PMU reset button once and then put the machine back together.
I proceeded to sleep it and wake it up about 5 times in a row, and it didn't exhibit the blowing fans problem and the light was "snoring" as it normally should in sleep mode.
A few days later, the machine hung up after being put to sleep AGAIN with the fans kicking up and the light on my cinema display staying one dim level without the "snoring."
This time I disconnected my Belkin USB hub and I have not seen the problem resurface since.
The interesting thing is that cleaning out the machine and resetting the PMU sure seemed to help.
So maybe it was a combination of things that were the culprits.
I also wonder if I can ever use this perfectly good and only 1 year old Belkin USB 2.0 hub ever again.
My father uses the same model on 10.5.4 as well on his MacPro without any problems. I am on a G5.
I wonder if there's a firmware on the Belkin USB hub that could be in need of upgrading or if I simply cannot use this hub w/ this computer anymore.
(luckily I don't need it urgently right now)
I will report back if the problem happens again, but for now, since the computer has been sleeping totally fine for days now since removing the USB hub, I am marking this question as answered and hope that this info can help other people.
If anyone has anything to add to this thread or knows about the specifics I've discussed above, please feel free to respond more.
    Thank you
