Finder making icons every time - jumpy

hi all, when i open the applications folder, and try scrolling, the action is very jumpy and icons appear with the 'A' applications icon before switching to their final form. This is in List view, in icon view they initially appear as blank.
subsequent finder openings are fine, but if i reboot, or relaunch finder then the same happens again. seems a bit clunky for a new computer and OS. any ideas?

I was having the same problem, and this thread led me to the solution. The Onyx feature was definitely the problem, however I do not use Onyx - I used a demo version of Cocktail (which is a similar product). In Cocktail I had added a dock item that shows Favorites in the dock as a stack. As a consequence of turning on this feature, apparently, the sidebar items become duplicated on restart. So it seems that it doesn't matter which program you use to access this "feature" - either way you end up with duplicated sidebar items. Assuming you have done the same thing - you don't have to run Onyx or Cocktail to alleviate the problem. Simply drag this item off of your dock, restart, and the problem is solved.

  • Finder Places - duplicate icons every time I restart

Every time I restart my iMac, I get duplicate icons in the sidebar under "Places."
I can fix the problem by deleting the sidebar preference, and replacing it with a backup that I keep stored on my iDisk.
But does anyone know of a way TO PREVENT THE FINDER PLACES ICONS FROM DUPLICATING EVERY TIME I RESTART?
I have used my Mac OS X disk to run disk utility.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS?
    Thank you!

  • Finder format changes every time - why?

Every time I open a Finder window, the format of the file structure changes.  Sometimes it's icons, sometimes it's a column view, etc.  Prior to Snow Leopard I never had this problem.  It's irritating as all get-out.  Anybody know if there's a fix for this??

  • Why does my finder display differently every time I open it

When I open Finder, it always opens it to a different size with different column widths that what I set. Can someone please help me understand how to save my settings so that I don't have to resize every time?
    Thanks!
I don't want it like this
I want it like this, and I always resize but it doesn't always reopen like that the next time I open Finder

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • DiskWarrior finds same error every time-

*Every time* I run DiskWarrior it says Critical Values in the Volume Information are incorrect/need to be repaired/etc.
I can literally reboot from the main system, immediately reboot from my external drive, run DW, and have the same result. Is there any way of figuring out what is going on, and fixing it? (I'm getting periodic spinning beachballs which I think are related.)
P.S. This only started after upgrading to SL.

It completes the repair and at first my Mac is a little zippier than when before…but after a while I started getting spinning beachballs again…(they always resolve after time, but obviously I'd rather not have any downtime at all).
I looked to see if there were details about which file was causing the problem but I didn't see anything…maybe this is something which Alsoft eliminated in the current version? (It used to have that IIRC.)

  • Need to find the network every time?

So I installed a new AE yesterday, for the sole purpose of establishing a home network for sharing internet access and a printer between an iMac and a Dell laptop. Simply connected the cable modem and printer USB to AE as instructed.
Haven't tested the printing functionality yet but the network is generally working as desired, but each time the iMac sleeps the network connection is lost. The only way to return online is to go through Network Diagnostics and find the network again and submit the required password... a bit more cumbersome than I'd hoped.
Is there a way around this procedure or some setting I've overlooked that would make it more efficient to get online?
    Thanks

If you migrated your account/apps over from an older Mac, you may have brought over some network settings that your newer Mac doesn't like. You may be able to resolve this by going to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and moving all those migrated settings to the Trash (don't empty yet), and rebooting. After you reboot, you'll have to reconfigure your network settings, but the old stuff won't be there to confuse anything.
I had to do this with my new MacBook Air, since it doesn't have a built-in Ethernet port (which my old PowerBook did have). The MBA names the ports differently, and since its default is wireless, the migrated settings kept attempting to connect wirelessly through a port whose name previously was for the PowerBook's wired Ethernet port. This forced me to manually connect to the network each time I started up my MBA, or whenever I awakened it from sleep.
Forcing the clean setup of the network resolved the issue. Once your network is working correctly, you can empty the Trash, otherwise move the newly created stuff out to the Desktop and move the previous settings in the Trash back to the SystemConfiguration folder, then delete the new settings from the Desktop. Follow this with a reboot to return to your initial network configuration.

  • Finder Wants Permission Every time File is moved on Server (issue with multiple users)

The Situation: I have a team of seven coworkers that uses a file structure on a server to move job folders from the 'active jobs' folder to "coworker x's" folder and then to a "waiting" folder once the job has been completed. Pretty much just moving folders into different folders. Seems pretty simple.
The Problem: At times, some folders will not move from one folder to another, and a message pops up asking "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this" and then it shows my computer's name and asks for a password. Now if typing in the password meant that the file would be moved, I would be fine with it, but when I type in my password in and accepts it, it does nothing! Like I said, there are seven of us that are using this system, and everyone has the same issue with the same folders, it is not like one person can move it and another cannot. To make it even harder to define where the issue is coming from: if you go back after a few minutes / hours, the folder will randomly be able to move with no issue. If you take the files out of the folder, you can move them, and when you move the now empty folder, it will gladly move into any folder, but when the files remain in the folder it asks for the password. And in some cases, folders that were just made and are empty have the same issue, which leads me to believe that this issue is not a result of the contents of the folder, but something else.
It is seemingly impossible to nail down the cause of our dilemma so I have come here in hopes of a great break through. The worst part is is that we are not doing anything that difficult, we are simply moving folders around. This is a windows based server, that might be important. Also, some of us are running Mavericks and others are still on Snow Leopard. Thank you for any information you might have! ( I have already tried the boot in recovery, resetpassword trick with no luck >_< )

If we're going to fix this, we will have to concentrate on one person to start with. Can that be you?
Some more information is required, only from you, your Mac and your windows user account on the server:
On the Windows server, are the 3 folders in question within the one shared folder?
What is the name of the Volume (share) that appears in Finder?
Are any of the folders being copied or moved to the local drive of the Mac?
On the windows server, what are the permissions that you have to:
      The top-level shared folder
The 3 folders underneath the top-level shared folder
Do a Get Info of the Volume (share) in Finder and do a screen shot of both the area above Preview and the area below Preview (Preview itself is not required. Make sure all right-pointing arrows are expanded to down-pointing arrows so all info in each section can be seen.
(Did this discussion get re-assigned to the OS X Server Community? I've never been there, and I thought I found it in the OS X Mavericks community.) Are you actually running OS X Server on the Macs?

  • I am often away from my computer for weeks at a time, digging at archaeology sites, before I return to clean, sort, and catalog my finds. And every time I launch my browser of choice, I have to sit through yet another Firefox update.

Sometime's it's a major update, like Firefox 3.6 for instance, but more often than not—too often—it's some stupid little tertiary update that requires Firefox to download, quit, root around on the hard drive, and restart with a whole damn brand-new binary. Why?!
Just once I'd like to sit down, boot up, and get to work instead of wading through this slow, irritating process that the Mozilla developers subject me to.
I've become envious of my friends who run Safari, Apple's home-grown browser, which is updated less frequently. If they want more frequent updates, they download and install WebKit, but can otherwise continue on day after day without interruption in Safari.
I like this model, as it lets busy people like me get more work done, so I am thinking of purchasing a Mac. Really, anything to get me away from the time-wasting wreck of a browser that Firefox has become is a good idea.
The Firefox model crashes and burns its users. Literally, too, when you think about all of its other addling bugs and design flaws that crash the browser and burn countless CPU cycles.
So until I can see the web in a whole new way with Safari on a new Mac, it'll be another day, another Firefox update.
Thanks a lot for nothing, Mozilla.

    Hello Matt, fellow archaeologist :)
Security updates are essential on any and all software, specially your browser. Mozilla is working to streamline the updating process as much as possible, but you shouldn't neglect your own security for a few seconds of "wasted" time.
I hope you do the best for yourself.

  • I get 2 Icons every time I down load

IfI save anything to my desktop I have 2 icons. 1) is firefox document & 2) is files. It doesn't make any difference where I down load to, I end up with 2 icons. I have another PC and it does the same thing.
    Thank You

That is how Firefox saves websites when you use web page, complete to save all data.
You get the main html file and a folder with all additional files.
You can look at this extension.

Connect the iPod to your computer and restore via iTunes. that is what the screen is telling you to do.

Post the full text of the message, including the error code, if any.
Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Enter the application name in the “Filter” text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any -- the text, please, not a screenshot
Then, still in the Console window, look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to the application. Select the most recent one and post the contents -- again, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

  • Does your finder relaunch every time ?

Since i installed Mavericks the Finder relaunches itself every time (three or more times by minute).
And i also notice that when i open an application in full screen, i can't stay on this wondow's application.
Is it the same for you ?

There have been hints to GoogleDrive being the culprit. See if quitting it remedies the situation.
If you want to further use it: unchecking the "Show file syn status icons" in GoogleDrive's references helped with my installation.

  • I get an email every time I sign on Find My iPhone saying a new phone signed on with my ID.

Why do I get an email saying a new phone signed onto Find My iPhone every time I sign on now?  This began happening with iOS 8, and I suspect it has to do with the MAC address spoofing supposedly done for security, which causes some problems, especially for people who control their wireless access via MAC addresses.  Any way to turn that OFF????

Doesn't relate to ios8 - because it started for me a few days ago also and i was still on ios7. in fact i upgraded to ios8 hoping that might stop it. The icloud settings page now says devices only will show up as managed devices if they are running ios8 or OS X Yosemite. so i upgraded hoping that would mean they would stop sending the messages. it didn't.
This is ridiculous - it says and thinks it is a new device every time i sign in.
They need to do something about this - currently i am applying an email filter for that subject to delete them automatically.

  • HT1435 every time i try to start up my ipod it only shows the sad ipod icon

every time i try to start up my older ipod 5th gen it makes a sound then shows the sad ipod icon so what could i try before i take it to the store.

If it's making a clicking sound, then the hard drive is probably bad.  The apple store probably wont do anything more than give you 10% discount on a new one.
You should be able to do a google search for ipod repairs and find someone who can replace the hard drive.
