Finder Menu Incomplete

A number of items have gone missing from my Finder menu: Software Update, System Preference, Dock, Recent, Restart, and Shut Down
All that's left are About, Location, Force Quit, Sleep, and Log Out
Ideas for restoration?

Those items are located in the  menu, not the Finder's menu. Was that what you meant?

  • Finder menu stuffed up

I just noticed that my Finder menu had some of the words replaced with numbers - for example, N169.3, N148, N35. The numbers seem to have replaced options like 'clean up' etc.
These weren't there yesterday, so I figured it was a virus.
I downloaded ClamXav and it said there was one infection: 6572.emlx Heuristics.Phishing
It won't delete, and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do now.
It hasn't slowed my computer down any or caused any programs to malfunction, but I do a fair bit of internet banking from my computer so I'm worried.
Is there any danger of my information being sent anywhere? Is there anything I can do to get rid of this virus? Should I take my computer to be fixed? I'm not the most technically minded person obviously so any help you could give me would be awesome.
    Thanks in advance.

Not a virus, but you have been infected by the latest Flashback Trojan which ClamXav won't find yet.

That infection, if it even is one, has nothing to do with your problem. At worst it's junk mail trying to get you to give up privacy information by clicking on a link. To get rid of it, you should right-click / control-click on the infection or file name in ClamXav and select "Reveal in Finder". When the window opens, double click on the file "6572.emlx" which will open it in your e-mail client. If it is truly a phishing / junk / spam message, then use the delete button in the e-mail client to get rid of it. If this is from a gmail account let me know as there is one additional step to insure you permanently delete it from the server. I have sever e-mails from my credit union that are identified as heuristics.phishing.... because they contain a link to the IRS, so are deemed "suspicious". I just make note of the file number and ignore it on subsequent scans.

The Trojan infection has already sent information out about your computer, but chances are good that none of your banking information has been compromised. It just announced that your computer had been successfully infected for future use, whatever that may be.
Since you say your aren't technically skilled, then I won't bother having you attempt to clean it up. We are only starting to understand how to do that now. It's quite complicated and still incomplete. Your best bet at this point is to erase your hard drive and reinstall the system then restore all your data from backup.
The other mystery we are struggling with is how did this happen. Past versions of this Trojan were advertised as updates to the FlashPlayer and required you to download and install the update, but the folks that have been complaining about this for the past couple of days claim not to have done any of that. If you recall seeing anything like that or downloading anything in the past four to five days, let me know.

  • Macbook pro.minimize button is inactive. Finder menu bar and dock won't appear when firefox is open. not occuring with safari. have to click on desktop to get Finder menu bar and dock to reappear. think happens after update of something. How do I fix it?

When i open firefox it opens up full screen (as it always has) but now the minimize button is grey (not yellow) and inactive so i can only open (green button) or close (red button) my firefox window. I can still make it smaller by dragging the bottom right corner but i can't minimize it to my dock or anything. Also, I have my dock set to auto show/hide when i roll my pointer over it. Now, whenever Firefox is open (no matter what size the window is) the Finder menu bar (with the time, battery power, etc) does not show up (which it always has before) and my dock won't auto appear when i roll my pointer over it.

Can you check this issue on Firefox 9?

Everytime I open Safari on my MacBook Pro a pop-up window from my Finder menu, with the Applications highlighted on the left in the favorites column with the Resources folder highlighted comes up and locks my Safari page until I manually close the Resources window then I have to refresh the internet search address line at the top of Safari. Can someone tell me how to stop this. It started after a software upgrade. It didn’t do that before. Thank you.

A few thoughts for diagnosis/testing purposes:
Have you recently run the disk utility and repaired HD and permissions? If not do so.
Boot into the Safe mode - hold down shift key on boot - and see if the problems are still there. Some functions won't work but see if anything odd happens.
Check your startup items. Get rid of them temporarily.
Create a new user account and see if the problems occur with the new account.
Lastly, be sure your backup is up-to-date.

  • My Finder menu, HD, and dock all disappeared after I mistakenly downloaded a bogus version of Firefox. How do I get them back?

I think I may have gotten some sort of virus after downloading a "bogus"  Free version of Firefox. I uninstalled Firefox immediately, because I noticed my Macbook was acting strangely, but the next time I turned it on, my HD, Finder menu, and dock were all gone! Basically there is now an empty, blue screen. I have booted in safe mode and deleted preferences, but nothing is working.

This probably is the mistake you made.  Many sites that offer application downloads also include adware as an unrequested 'bonus'.  Try AdwareMedic and it should take care of the unwanted ad popups:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
If no success, the use the Apple support procedure, which is a lot more complicated:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987
The lesson is, always download from the developers web site or from the APP store.  That way no unwanted items will not be included.

  • Home folder do not appear in the finder menu - How can I get it back?

    Keywords:
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
    FileVault: On
    System: Restarted
Home folder: still somewhere in the hard drive but not yet in my account
Initial bad manipulation: home folder > get info > ownership & permissions > you can > No Access
    <and> Owner > No Acces
    Hello all,
    Here is my problem:
Basically, I do not have the home folder in my account when I log in.
Hopefully I remember well what have led to this consequence.
To begin, in the finder menu for the home folder I opened the get info pop-up. Then, under "Ownership & Permissions" I have replaced "Read & Write" by "No Access" both in "you can" and under "Details - Owner".
Per consequence, I couldn't read a document in this folder. Hence, I've tried to to go backward and change the "No Access" to "Read & Write" but it couldn't work.
Then, I restarted the session - but because I had filevault turned on - it screwed.
Then, when I logged in back I got this message:
"The home folder for user "XX" is not located in the usual place or cannot be accessed.
The home or users folder may have been moved or deleted. If the home folder is located or the network, he server may be unavailable temporarily. If you continue to have problems, see your administrator."
Do anyone have already encountered a similar problem?
    Thanks a lot,
    /

    HFG,
One more thing, from this other admin account (good one) I went in terminal and >I observed that the folder that I'm having trouble with does not have the "d" letter.
    Basically, it's written:
    "-rwxr-xr-x 1 bobip bouba 23701154564 Nov 12 15:31 lol.sparseimage"
What you think? Souldn't be coded as "d_rwx...
    Remember what I wrote earlier:
A FileVault account instead puts all of its data into an encrypted disk image - in fact an encrypted sparseimage. If FileVault is enabled, the home folder for that account no longer directly contains the Documents, Pictures, and other data subfolders - all that the home folder really contains is a single file named username.sparseimage. When you log in to the FileVault account and give your password, this disk image mounts and you can access your files.
That "lol.sparseimage" does contain all your data, but it is a file and not a folder, which is why its permissions start with a "-" and not a "d". It is a "disk image file," very similar to the .dmg files that you download from the internet. When a disk image file is opened it will mount a "virtual" disk volume, which behaves very much like a real external disk volume.
Let's call the shortname of your FileVault account "fv" as Robert did. So as I wrote earlier, when you are logged out, your file structure is going to look like:
    HD>Users>fv>fv.sparseimage
When you log in, the name of the lol folder is changed to .fv, with the lol.sparseimage file still inside. The leading period hides it from finder. But more importantly, a "virtual disk" named "fv" mounts and opens, which contains all your stuff. The "fv" disk icon is hidden from Finder and doesn't show on the desktop, but it is there.
The mounted disk volume "fv" has access permissions just as a file or folder does, and looking back at what you did, *I think you changed the permissions on that mounted volume*, and not on the sparseimage file that holds it - you would not have seen the sparseimage file from Finder. If you did this then the permissions for both the HD>Users>fv folder and also for the sparseimage file were probably OK all along. I'm not sure what you've now done to them, which is why I advised backing up before doing anything.
So to sum up - there are three different entities that need to have the proper permission structure for the FileVault account to work properly:
    1. The folder "fv" in /Users (assuming you are logged out. If logged in it would be .fv)
    2. The *sparseimage file* "fv.sparseimage", which is inside that fv folder.
    3. The *disk volume* 'fv" that mounts when the fv sparseimage file is opened and the correct FileVault password is given.
I tried creating a test filevault account to check these permissions, and you could try to reproduce what I found. My suggestion in trying to fix things is to do it from Finder, not from Terminal.
    I would
    1) Log out of the FileVault account,
    2) From the other admin account, [enable the root user (Tiger)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528?viewlocale=en_US], and then log in as root.
    Then from the root account:
    1) Do a Get Info on the folder /Users> fv. Set the owner to fv, with Read only access, set Group to fv with "No Acess" and set Others to "No Access.' Do not click Apply to enclosed items.
    2) Do a Get Info on the file fv.sparseimage. Set the owner to fv, with Read and Write access, set Group to fv with No Access, and set Others to "No Access.' Do not click Apply to enclosed items.
    3. Double-click the fv.sparseimage file (and cross your fingers!). When asked for a password, give the password from the FileVault account, not your current root password. Look on the Desktop for a new "fv" disk icon.
(Your stuff is in there - if you have ANY type of backup storage, even a thumb drive, you could double-click the fv disk icon and copy the most valuable files somewhere else)
Do a Get Info on the fv disk icon, and set the owner to "unknown" with Read and Write Access, the Group to "unknown" with No Access, and Others to No Access. Most importantly, *check the box for "Ignore ownership on this volume"*. Do not click Apply to enclosed items.
So again, the three Get Infos (as seen from the root account) on my fv folder, my fv.sparseimage file, and my fv mounted volumes look like this:
The important permissions are those under "Details". Ignore the part that says "*You have*: No Access." ( You are root, and you actually do have access)
If all seems well, then right-click >eject the mounted fv disk icon on the desktop, log out of root, and try logging back into your Filevault account.

  • I have a MacBook purchased in 2009 with Snow Leopard. I tried to access "special characters" from the Finder menu and an intermittent blank pop ups and will not stop. It also happens when I run Word or Pages.

The blank pop up began as I tried to access "special characters" from the finder menu. I restarted, turned off and restarted and it did not work. It interferes with any application because I cannot work fast. Every new step takes a few seconds longer such as saving, finding text, check spelling and many more. I am desperate to solve this. Thanks in advance for any help given.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Wheres my Finder Menu bar gone??

This is a really odd one...
When my partner switches user to her account the a pop appears stating "Finder failed to open; restart"
Then when she tries to open something in Applications the computer freezes, the finder menu bar on the top of the screen vanishes and nothing can be opened from the dock. Tried the variety of CTR + all sorts and nothing happens!
Sometimes open applications (such as Word or Safari) have some limited function, sometimes not.
As the finders gone I can't switch users. On the few occations when I have been able to my user accounts finder menu bar has either been transparent or not there!
All I've been able to do is hold the on/off button down until the computer switches off!
Anyone having this issue? Able to help??
    Cheers
    Gethin

    Hi
What exactly did you try? CTR is not something I'm familiar with unless it's your shorthand for something else?
Have you tried booting in safe mode yet? Hold down the shift key. Be patient as it can take some time. At the log in try and log in with her account. If you can navigate to the /Users/Home/Library/Preferences folder. Find the com.apple.finder.plist. Take this to the trash. Next launch DU and repair permissions. When done quit and Restart the mac. Post back if you're still having problems. If you have a chance at this point back up all important and relevant information.

  • My Finder menu bar and screen is flashing.  Is this a virus?

The icons (file folders, Hard Drive icon, etc) on my desktop and the Finder menu bar started flashing off and on, last night. I can use Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, etc. from the Dock, but it is a challenge to click on Airport on the menu bar to get on line. I shut the computer down, removed-then reinstalled the battery and restarted the computer, but the flashing began right away, again. I had exported some photos to desktop which landed atop the Hard Drive icon. I move them as quickly as I can, but the screen flashes and puts them back, so I can't access the Hard Drive. I had viewed a QT movie someone sent me earlier in the evening and also clicked on several photos in MySpace. I wonder if one of those could have done it.

Just starting up with the install disk won't erase anything.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart the computer and at the same time insert disk1 into the slot while holding down the option key.
This should bring up a screen showing two different startup options.
Pick your disk that you inserted.
You will eventually get a screen with a window opened showing the Mac install file. Don't use this.
Up top on the menu bar should be a pull down menu that will give you an option of disk utilities.
Use the repair permissions function and disk repair function. These will not erase anything.
The reason I'm not clear on the position of the menus is that I'm at work on a peecee.
Try this and let us know..

  • How to use 'Find' menu in Screens

    Hi all,
I wanted to know how to use 'Find' menu in screens.
Actually I have created a screen through SE51 and used the pushbutton to assign the function 'Find' ( one with binoculars ). The screen uses a table control to bring all the data from the DB table in the PBO module. When the user uses FIND button the system should prompt a search pop up screen onto which he will enter the search parameter and when he enter that the corresponding line item should be displayed on the tablecontrol. I wanted to know what logic should be incorporated in the program if that pushbutton is used. Please reply immediately. Its urgent.

    Hello,
In the PAI under a module (user_command for example) when the user click the button you should use the command READ TABLE (if you look at the help, there's some options to do the READ dynamically - [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d3/2e974d35c511d1829f0000e829fbfe/frameset.htm]) to get the line index and with it you set the TOP_LINE of the table control ( tc_table-top_line = sy-index for example).
Doing this the selected line will be the first in the table control on the next step (PAI/PBO).

  • Spotlight does not open a finder window when i choose Show all in finder menu?

I have a significant number of files in my Macbook Air. A lot of them are research papers and medical literature.
About a month ago I updated the operating system from snow Leopard to mountain Lion and I had no reasons to complain except a smaller battery time.
Since then I installed every OS update.
After the last update, a few days ago, Spotlight does not open a finder window when i choose Show all in finder menu.
Spotlight continues to work properly if I write a name or expression in spotlight in a finder window but not in the upper left corner at the menu bar
    As this been described yet?
    Thank you in advance

I had the same problem yesterday after performing a clean install of Mountain Lion (10.8.2) on my MacBook Pro.
I resolved the problem by booting from the Mountain Lion Recovery Partition and then running Disk Utilty (Repair) for the primary disk on which Mountain Lion is installed.  It identified (and repaired) many permissions issues...
When I rebooted following the repair, Spotlight worked again properly -- including the "Show All in Finder" function.

  • HOW TO MAKE FONTS BIGGER IN FINDER MENU

How can i make fonts bigger in finder menu and safari menus . everything is very small

    Zoom works well or:
Sidebar Text & Icons can be set to small, medium or large. > System prefs > General > Sidebar Icon size..  Sorry Lion..
Finder text can be made larger > View > Show view options.
Safari & Mail  command + works reasonably well.
Changing the Display resolution > System Prefs > Display may work OK for you.
Third party freeware option > Tinker Tool.
Must admit I wonder if my eyes would cope OK with the HighDef screen on an Air..

  • Removing Item from Finder Menu

How do I remove an item from the Finder Menu? I have the clock, airport-thingy, and power info. There is also a character palette item. displayed as an american flag. How do I remove the character palette item from the menu?

    Hi
Hold down the cmd key and drag it off. This should
    work for most menubar icons.
    Matt
Thank you very much! That did the trick. There is a lot I don't know. I'm glad there are people like you out there.

  • What is this Icon?  (Upper Right Finder Menu Bar)

There is an icon on the upper right of the Finder menu that is all gray and is a thin vertical line with two equal sized triangles lined up on it on the right side, and a squiggly line going across the center of the line horizontally.
I clicked on it and it caused my cursor to become a multicolored wheel while in the Finder toolbar, and I'm going to have to log out to get it to stop. It doesn't appear in the Force Quit list (unless it's Finder, System Profiler, which I don't think it is).
    Sorry for the dumb question.
Wish we could paste pics in here; I made a Grab shot of it....
    -Linda

I really have no idea which icon you're describing but...
SystemUIServer is background process but one of the apps it specifically controls the right hand side of the Menu bar, where the Menu Extras are and should return your icons to default.
    Go toUsers/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.0017f2c28128.plist and delete these files, Then, log out and back in.
