Finder moving files not copying

I have been using a mac for over 15 years but this one has me stumped.
When coping files I have always held down 'option' to copy the file. A small green plus symbol appears and the files then copy into the target folder, or hard drive.
I have a Mac Pro, with the latest updates of Yosemite .... but now the files are moving and NOT copying.
So when I back something up, they are no longer in the original location, only where i have copyied them to. They disappear.
Should I be using cut and paste instead? Anyone else have this problem?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Download and re-install the 10.10.1 update.

  • Moving files without copying

I recently updated to Lion and have found the most overlooked issue in all OS updates I have ever witnessed. Now when moving folders between finder (or your desktop) to the Mac HD the files or folders no longer just move they copy!!! This is an extremely cumbersome process for any art department or any organization who stores or houses folders on the desktop of their machines to move to servers and or any other location for that matter. Instead of the simple move like in Snow Leopard the files now copy duplicating the folder and taking up twice the space on your hard drive!!!
The issues I have with this is that if a folder is larger than the amount of space you have on your systems hard drive you can not move it because of this silly copy feature within lion.
The only work around I and Apple have found is to move the folder to your trash first and then to your desktop and there is no copying. This is hardly a work around for any department being that someone could come in and empty your trash therefore losing vital information!!!
    PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS ASAP!!!
Any solutions to this are greatly appreciated. I have been using Apple for over 15 years and have never experience the down time I am experiencing now with having to go back and delete folders because they copy instead of the simple move I experienced before!!!

    Hi Thomas,
Thanks for your very swift response.
The 10.7.3 installation was done by the Apple Store four days ago, on Sunday 20 May 2012, so I doubt that the OS has become corrupt already.
I've verified all HDs, as well as repaired all Disk Permissions.
As for User Permissions, I'm the only user on the Mac, and it's a standard installation.
There are no additional Users, and I haven't modified the standard read-write permissions, or anything like that.
This is a very straight-forward, clean install, and I've been on Macs for 25 years.
However, in fairness, my original posting wasn't as clear as it should have been, for which I apologise.
The 200 GB folder is in the Trash, on an EXTERNAL hard drive.
In other words, when the external hard drive is not connected to my MBP, the Trash is empty.
However, when I plug the external HD into the MBP, the 200 GB folder shows up in the Trash.
Having seen a similar discussion in the Apple forums, I've attempted the suggested workaround of holding down the Command key, whilst dragging the folder out of the Trash, onto the EXTERNAL HD icon.
However, the entire folder immediately starts copying, instead of simply moving.
I've also tried holding down the Command key, whilst dragging the folder out of the Trash, onto the INTERNAL HD icon.
Again, the entire folder immediately starts copying, instead of simply moving.
As suggested, I've started a new topic.
However, I thought that I might as well go straight to the experts, such as yourself.
Therefore, any further advice would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Best,
    Michael

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro cannot find moved files or files with edited names

Adobe Acrobat X Pro 10.1 cannot find recent files or files with edited names.
For instance, if a PDF file is moved in the hard disk from one foder to another, Acrobat cannot find it when trying to open it via "File - Open Recent File".
Likewise, if the name of the file is changed in the Finder.
Similarly, if a PDF file is open, it is marked with the yellow fluorescent marker of Acrobat, its name is then changed in the Finder and later on you try to save it, Acrobat says that it cannot find such file.
Yet, applications like Microsoft Word do not have any of the above problems. It would be great if Adobe could fix these serious productivity issues, which have plagued Acrobat for many years now.
How to send such feedback to Adobe?

  • Move files, not copy files

Just got iMac with Lion.  Former MBP with Snow Leopard.  I like my downloaded files to go to my desktop for easy finding, but when I try to move them to the appropriate folder, they show up in both places, which means to me that it's just copying.  In Snow Leopard and all former iterations of X, dragging a file to the destination moved it and it was gone from the original location.  When I search help on the finder menu, the instructions look the same as for Snow Leopard - drag = move.  What am I doing wrong?

I have a solid state drive (256G) and a spinning drive (1T).  I would assume they represent two different volumes?
I tried option-click&drag, but a copy remains on the desktop.
I called apple and the tech support guy told me this is normal behavior and I have to drag any files I've already copied onto another drive into the trash to get rid of them.  Anyway, on my MBP, I could option-click and drag files from my desktop to external drives without copies being left on my desktop, so this behavior seems to be really different from my previous experience with Snow Leopard.  Guess I just had it easy before...
I'm thinking I'm going to change my preferences in my browsers, Safari and Firefox, to download onto the 1T drive instead - maybe there won't be an extra step in moving files into folders on that drive.

    We migrated a Groupwise 7.02-postoffice from a Netware 6.5-Sp5-server to a

    Agents:
    Post Office Agent:
    Path to startup file: \\fileserver\SYS\SYSTEM\p006.poa
As you see, our startup-file was on another volume then the postoffice.
In the migration-log we only saw a mount of the postoffice-volume, so we
think there is a bug in the migration utility. It does not copy the
startup-file if it is on another volume (in this case on the SYS-volume).
    Or did we something wrong?
At last we solved our problem by copying (and editing) a startup-file
    to /opt/novell/groupwise/agenst/share/

  • How to open files (NOT copy) from external hard drive

    Hello there,
I have a Western Digital My Passport external harddrive. I bought the hard drive so I could take stuff like my music off my laptop harddrive, free up space and make it run smoother.
Problem is, every time I select a music file on the ex harddrive to play in itunes, the file is copied to the laptop harddrive! Completely defeats the purpose.
Does anyone know how to stop my laptop from copying music files and just get it to play files from the external hard drive? I have looked and looked but to no avail - this is my first Mac and it is the one issue that really bugs me.
Any help will be much appreciated!
N.B. it doesn't seem to do this with other file types (documents etc.) just music files/files supported by itunes.

How are you selecting the music files? I have my entire music library on an external drive. If you go to preferences in iTunes, their is an option to select where your music library resides. I think it is under advance but I'm not sure since I don't have access to my mac.

  • Where file is located in computer? search only finds a file not showing a location of the file, is it similar to windows 8 philosophy - simplify without any logic?

Lately can not find a file location directory, when searching for the file finder finds it right away but I can not see where the file is located in the computer directory. Lately I see simplification of Mac OSX which is not always a good thing where I have to find the answers on the internet when my intuitive way is out- like finding monitor resolution with a use of option key to display all the options. I looks like Windows 8 and Microsoft philosophy of simplification without any logic is adopted by Apple engineers.

Open Finder> go to View> choose "Show Path Bar."
Highlight any file and the complete path will show in the bottom finder window bar now.

  • Visual Studio 2012 Find in Files not Displaying Files

Maybe I am doing something wrong but all of a sudden the Find in Files in my VS2012 does not display the actual file results. It displays the count but the file list is empty.. Am I missing something?
    Thanks.

    Hi Shahrouz,
    I can't reproduce your issue.
There are some steps as following below you can try:
Check the setting Find and Replace(Tools->Environment->Find and Replace(
    Use “devenv.exe /resetsettings”
Use Visual Studio Setup Wizard (via Control Panel) to repair Visual Studio
You also can read the reference about Find in Files:

Hope you can find what cause your issue.

  • Finding a "file not found" error in a sub vi

I have a vi which includes about two layers of sub vi's.  Various sub vi's read data from files.  When I run the main vi, I get a file not found error, but the error message does not identify either the file nor the sub vi within which the error occurs.  Shor of manually going through each vi, how can I find the error source?
    Solved!

You don't need to - that's the whole point of searching for a VI. Are you getting an error dialog? If so, does it tell you the name of the VI as the source? If so, just use the Find tool to find all instances of that VI and use the probes as Darin mentioned to track down where the error is occurring.

  • Spotlight finds some files, not others

Hey Apple, Spotlight not only fails to work as advertised, it's essentially useless. A search tool that cannot be relied on is a search tool that is not worth using at all. Your failure to make this vaunted "feature" work by version 10.4.3 is really a black mark on the Apple brand.
    Here's my experience:
    1. Upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3. Process was long but went smoothly. New OS is snappier and has several welcome new features.
    2. Experimented with Spotlight. It quickly found text buried in Word and other documents. Stellar.
    3. Spotlight did not find text inside Wordperfect documents. This did not surprise me because I don't have Wordperfect on my system, so these files were unreadable.
    4. Converted the Wordperfect files to Word, saved them, opened them and closed them. Spotlight still did not find text in these files.
    5. Created a new Word file. Spotlight did not find EITHER the name of the file or the text inside it.
    6. Used Onyx to re-index Spotlight. No improvement. Turned computer off and back on a couple times. Still no improvement.
Note: I have not made any changed to the Privacy setting or anything else, other than to re-order the display of Spotlight's results. Do not have any third-party system software or utilities besides Onyx, and this problem occurred before I even installed Onyx. Also have never fiddled with the command line.

    Update:
I re-indexed Spotlight by marking then unmarking my Macintosh HD as Private in Spotlight Preferences. Spotlight then found the name and contents of the Word file I created after upgrading to Tiger. Who knows why it didn't find this file the first time I re-indexed.
Spotlight continued to ignore all content of the files that I converted from Wordperfect to Word -- until I opened each file and saved them using the "save as" command. Then Spotlight worked.

  • How to move files not copy

how to move files from mac to an external hard drive. Copy leaves the files on the mac hard dive. I am trying to free up space on the mac hard drive.

Whenever you migrate data to an external drive, the files will copy. Once the copy is done, simply delete the files from your internal drive.

  • I am organizing my external HD and want to move files NOT COPY them. How do I drag and drop folder contents without Mac automatically copying them to the "drop" location?

I am sorting out all the clutter and duplicate files on my external HD. In doing this I am moving the entire contents of folders to new locations. Some of these folders cointain gigs of info. I do not want to have to spend large amounts of time waiting for hundreds of gigs to copy somewhere then  moving the originals to the trash and wait even longer deleting all of them. All I want to do is move the files up a subfolder, but the way Finder goes aobut doing it can be a 400 GB swing taking hours. How do I just "move" them?

This solved my question by jsd2  on Oct 9, 2011 6:33 AM
I did a global change of permissions for the entire documents account in the currrent user account using the get info and apply to enclosed items.
I think what is happening is that the Documents folder normally carries an "everyone deny delete" ACL, meant to protect it from accidental deletion:
    $ ls -lde ~/Documents
    drwx------+ 6 t1  staff  204 Oct  9 08:51 /Users/t1/Documents
    0: group:everyone deny delete
ACLs are special types of permissions that do not show up in GetInfo, but can get propagated if you click "Apply to Enclosed Items" on a folder that carries them. Affected files that acquire  that ACL would require password authentication to move or delete them.
I think the following Terminal command (copy and paste it) should remove such ACLs from items within the Documents  folder:
    chmod -RN ~/Documents/*

  • Failing to import my own audio files (not copy protected files)

I'm having trouble getting external audio files to import properly into GarageBand, most specifically MP3 files. These aren't copy protected audio files, these are files I've created myself in other programs and unprotected MP3 sound effects clips downloaded from various web sites.
Here's what happens, I open GB and create a new project. I find the audio file that I want to start with, an MP3 file that plays just fine in QuickTime and iTunes. I drag the audio file into GB to create a new track. GB begins a conversion/import process or whatever it does to be able to edit an MP3 file. I see the progress bar filling up as it does this. When it is complete a new track is created with the MP3 file's name, however the track itself is empty. I don't see any content and there is no audio when I hit play. I don't get any sort of error message either.
I've tried playing with the MP3 file settings, changing them to mono, adjusting bit rates, compression, etc. but every time I try to import into GB this same process happens with no results. These audio files I'm creating play in all my other audio playing apps, so I'm confused as to what could be wrong.
Can someone tell me how I can get GB to import these files properly? Thanks in advance!
