Finder no longer detects a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive

I have a Lacie d2 quadra hard drive that is connected with firewire 400 to my Macbook Pro. It will not show in Finder or the desktop.
It constantly in running because I can hear the clicking sound coming from it and it runs all the time. I cannot see it on my Mac.

Yes, you have to format it with Disk utility - that is what it is for. So it seems you did that correctly - check back to make sure that it is the GUID partition scheme.
Do you have any LaCie software installed? Your drive needs nothing on it to work. First, try to just restart your computer - that may work (after ejecting and unplugging the drive). If it doesn't, plug it back in and you might want to try to run through it again (use partition this time > one or more partitions).

  • Added a Lacie D2 Quadra hard drive and now I can't drag and drop...

    Hey everyone,
I was hoping someone could help me.  I just bought a new 1 Terabyte D2 Quadra external hard drive for me computer.  It is a Mac Pro desktop running Lion OS X 10.7.5.  I just attached the hard drive to my computer and set it up. and now I can no longer drag and drop items with my mouse on the desktop, in finder, or at all so far.  I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do to fix it?
Note:  The setup assistant did not work with OS X 10.7.5 so I had to instead, use disk utility and erase, name, and format the disk (I chose the format as mac os x extended (journaled).  Could that have had something to do with it?

  • My LaCie Firewire 800 hard drive, connected to my Macbook Pro via Thunderbolt Cinema Display port, disconnects after sleep

I have a LaCie RAID Quadra hard drive (two disks in a case set to a redundant array) which for all intents and purporses appears as a normal hard drive to my mac.
When connected directly via FW800 to my Macbook Pro (2011, with thunderbolt port), it works perfectly.
For the sake of convenience, and since I am using it only at home as my Time Machine drive, I connected it to the FW800 port on my Thunderbolt Cinema Display.  The display works perfectly in every way up until now.
When connected, the drive works great.  However, when I put the machine to sleep, upon awakening it, I receive the "Disk improperly ejected" error immediately upon the screen coming up.
The drive is set to Auto mode which has always worked fine in the past; putting the drive to sleep when the computer is asleep, etc.
So, I only receive the disk ejected error when it's plugged into the Cinema Display; not when directly plugged into the MBP.
I have the 1.1 firmware update applied to the monitor.
    Any ideas?  I appreciate it.

My desktop has two FireWire ports. In the first one I had my webcam plugged in. In the second one, the External Hard Drive. I unplugged the camera and used the first port for my External HDrive and now it works! So it seems the problem is a hardware problem with the port.
I'd check to see if the problem returns when you plug the camera back into the second port, or if the drive works in the original port when the camera is not connected.
Edit: Maybe you unplugged the problem, when you unplugged the camera?

  • LaCie 120Gb external hard drive no longer recognized

I've had a LaCie 120Gb external hard drive working independently off a firewire cable for a couple of months now. This morning it stopped being picked up as an external drive. It connects because you can feel it whirring, and stops when the computer is turned off (so the cables are working), but it no longer shows up in the finder or disk utility. I tried resetting the PRAM to no effect. Any ideas anyone???
    Dave Nicholls, Auckland.

it spins because it has power. maybe your firewire port is damaged? does the drive have a usb port that you can try? if not, you can remove the hard drive from it's enclosure and install it in a tower mac or pc if you have one and see if it shows up then.

  • LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not Being Seen By Time Machine

    Hello all,
I have a LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not being seen by Time Machine hooked up to my iMac via firewire 800. My iMac is running latest updates etc. Have raised a support ticket and was given the following instructions by LaCie:
    Posted: 08 November 2007 @ 00:00
Thank you for contacting LaCie Technical Support. Make sure the drive is mounting and you can assess files on it on your 10.5 system. If you can then you will need to reformat the drive to make it compatible with time machine.
Warning! All data on the external drive will be destroyed in this process.
Step 1: Run Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Step 2: Click on the LaCie hard drive's 'physical' entry, usually the third entry in the list
Step 3: Click on the Partition tab
Step 4: Change 'Current Scheme' to '1 Partition'
Step 5: Change the name of the drive back to what you would like it to be
Step 6: The format needs to be Mac OS Extended, with or without journaling
Step 7: Click on the Options... button
Use "Apple Partition Map" partition scheme on a PowerPC-based Mac.
Use "GUID" partition scheme on an Intel-based Mac.
    Step 8: Click on OK
    Step 9: Click on Apply
Step 10: click on Erase at the bottom of the screen, then confirm the erase.
The drive should start to be reformatted which should take only a few seconds and show up on the desktop with a new icon. Once it has you can then use it with time machine.
I have done all of the above and it is still not being seen. Anyone had a similar issue or got the above to actually work?
    Thanks in advance!!!!

    Ryan,
Check drive volume name and also the Computer name. Apple released a tech note recommending that both be limited to only the characters A-Za-z0-9 (no dashes, hyphens, or other special characters.
If you can, send the Apple System Profiler report to me at the addres in my profile. Imay be able to see something there. I have helped another user with similar problems, but with a LaCie USB drive. He got things working by repeating the recommended steps, and double checking everything.
As others have rported, this should work, so there may be something else preventing proper operation.
If the drive is usable from Finder, but Time Machine cannot use it, there is something related in how Time Machine is viewing the drive.
    Mike

  • Feedback on LaCie 750 GB d2 Quadra Hard drive please

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who is using the Lacie 750 GB d2 Quadra Hard drive with their G5, either via Firewire 800 or an eSATA card. Is the fan/drive quiet? Which interface do you use? Any problems? Thanks!

This was the dialogue with LaCie support. The names have been changed to protect the innocent (and me).

maclover Hi. The Scenario: Power switched-on to the Quadra - disc not spinning; tried and tested 'bootable' OS X 10.4.10 installed on a volume of the Quadra and selected in System Preferences > Startup Disc. Quadra connected to G5 by included FW800 cable.
Startup the G5 - Quadra does nothing - G5 defaults to internal boot drive and boots; finally, at about the grey Apple, the Quadra spins up - somewhat too late, unfortunately.
Auto/On/Off switch has no effect in either On or Auto (probably not intended for Macs).
A Restart with the Quadra disc already spinning works ok.
The other, triple-interface d2 here manages to spin up on what I assume is the first poll of the interfaces by the firmware, just after the Startup bong, and the G5 boots fine from a system selected in System Preferences > Startup Disc.
So, has something been changed? Is there a simple fix? Is there a fault with this Quadra?
I guess this would have been much quicker and easier to explain, and sort out, on the phone - but there you go.
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards,

LaCie +Thank you for contacting LaCie Technical Support. I think the issue has to do with the chipset we are using in our drive. The triple interface uses a different chipset then the new quadra, and the drive inside is different. The triple has an IDE drive and the quadra as a SATA drive. I'm waiting right now to get my hands on a quadra drive to see if I can duplicate the issue you have, when I get one and test this I will let you know. One question I have for you about the quadra, are you sure that it doesn't spin up when you have it in the on position when its hooked up to your mac during boot up, till the gray screen? It seems odd that it is not spinning up from the power switch on the drive.+
    Posted: 06 November 2007 @ 00:00
maclover Hi. Thank you for your reply. To clarify -
When the Quadra is first turned on at the mains in the morning, before the G5, it spins up and the G5 will then boot from a volume on the Quadra, if that is what is selected in 'Startup Disc'. Fine.
The problem arises when a ReStart is needed - because I never do a 'ReStart' as such - I Shutdown, let the dust settle, and then Startup. That's when the Quadra doesn't spin up in time, and the G5 defaults to the internal boot drive.
It's not that important - it's just that the other d2 here is fine with this - but I will just have to remember to switch off the mains to the Quadra in between a Shutdown and Startup.
Unless, of course, there is some setting I have missed - or that it should, in fact, be able to handle a Shutdown-Startup sequence, and this Quadra is faulty.
    Thank you for your time.

LaCie +No, setting your missing just a chipset change, that caused this.+

maclover Thank you for your reply. I will just have to remember which drive I'm booting from - and adjust the switch-on sequence accordingly!
    Many thanks,
Trust this explains the changes. G5 System Sleep (which I don't use) seems to work ok.
The 500GB also has the "smart fan".
Please post again if you have any questions. Good Luck.

  • LaCie Quadra Hard Drive

I just bought a LaCie Quadra Hard Drive which is supposed to be 500 GB but when I put in the user manual disk it says 319.9 GB under the LaCie logo on my desktop. I haven't connected the unit to my computer because I intend to take it back to the store. Am I misinterpreting something?I also don't know which connection to make: Firewire 800, Firewire 400 and USB 2.0. I'm only storing Garageband song files and nothing else. What is difference between these connections? Is thee a "right" one for my purposes?

    Forget the utilities CD.
Attach the drive, start *Disk Utility*
Make sure there is only 1 partition on the drive (if more, repartition the drive to 1 partition).
Then reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended.
Remember - partitioning & formatting both erase everything that is on the drive, so if you have already saved anything to the drive, back it up first.
You should end up with a drive that has about 450GB usable space. Formatting always takes up some disk space regardless of operating system, and the manufacturers claim the raw size of the disk, not the formatted size.
For what it's worth, you can better check the available space if you highlight the drive icon and hit Option-I - you will get the Info window and it will tell you what OSX believes the drive size & available space to be.

  • LaCie 1TB external hard drive can not connect to E4200

I have my LaCie 1TB external hard drive plugged into the USB-port of the Linksys E4200 so I can access that drive wireless.
However, in my disk management (via Cisco Connect), it does not show under Storage > Disk.
How can I solve this so I can access this hard drive from any computer in the network?
The drive is formatted in NTFS.
    Thanks

Connect the hard drive directly to the computer and make sure that your computer can detect the hard drive.
If it is detected and working properly on your computer then connect the hard drive the USB port on the router.
Follow this link to setup storage device connected to E3000 router.

  • My Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive does not show connection speed

    *My Concern*
Hi I have a Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive, which although works fine is not showing its connection, shows up in the system profiler as 'Connection Speed Unknown'. -Should I be worried? I have other drives connected to my G5 Dual 2 gig machine and no problem their they all show their connection speeds.
*Other Firewire 'Unknown Speed connection' related Problem*
I had a DVD LaCie Dual layer portable Firewire drive which recently suffered from the same problem and I had to send it back. This was due to it slowly developing a fault of not being able to burn dual layer disks properly.
*What I have done to try and remedy the situation.*
I have been able to do the following but I am afraid with no change in the system Profiler;-
1 Trashed the whole system and rebuild
    2 repair my permissions
3 empty out all my caches with OnyX (third party app) version 1.8.5
4 Disconnected all drives and reconnected them one by one to see if there are any anomalies within the system
5 switched my G5 off removed the plug from the wall waited 30 sec for it to reset itself this was the 1st attempt. On my 2nd attempt I then cold booted the machine and reset Pram settings
6 used Tech Tools Pro 4 version 4.1.2
    7. Replaced Power supply of the offending unit (didn't have to but I wanted to be safe and eliminate this fronm the equation.
9.tried changing around the order in the chain to which the drives were connected to the G5but alas no joy!
    Summery
So my concern is if a device which is Firewire shows up in the system profiler as connection speed unknown should I begin to worry even though it appears to be functioning.
Thank you ahead of time for any help on this matter
    *Supporting evidence*
Please see below a shot of my System profiler so you can see what I mean:-
    *(Important Note)*
The Lacie Big disk has 800/400 Firewire connection speeds I have connected it straight to my G5s firewire 800 port then daisy chained the LaCie's via its other 800 port to the two other 800 Firewire Hard drives.
When the LaCie DVD DL drive was connected, I connected it straight to the 400 firewire port. As it needed direct access to the G5 for it to function optimally.

Hi BDAqua - thanks a lot for replying - really appreciate your help. I was using Time machine to back up on the old lacie drives that I have - I just backed up on both lacies and they backed up faster for some reason but that might have been because they were very small back ups as I did full back ups on Tuesday night - this is the info under the USB section > hardware > about my mac - it didn't show the speed like the example you gave me though but it still backed none the less  :

    Dear Jayas
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is James.
If the drive is working fine on one system but failing on another especially with the "clicking" sound this is an issue with the system not being able to supply enough power to power the device.
These devices require power from the machine to make them operate if there isn't enough power supplied the drive will fail to work. This is why you are having no issues with one system but are on another.

Hello, I changed my Imac hard drive which no longer worked. I installed a hard drive

install OS X 10.4.2 on the hard drive, I do not see the disk. What is the problem?

    Thanks for the help
I started on the installation CD OS X 10.4.2, I used Disk Utility
to partition the disk according to the document that you have proposed. unfortunately
I have not succeeded. When I partition the disk, even if I called it Macintosh HD, it
does not keep the name and it shows disk0s3 instead. I did an erase on disk.
When I mount the disk it tells me that I must repair. When I tried to repair, I got
    the following message:
    Volume check failed
The underflying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
    I also had a message:
    Invalid b-tree node size.
Note: The disc is new, but it has already been formatted on a computer Imac 27 inch 2011 OS X Lion.
I used a USB 2.0 to SATA cable to adjust the formatting.
What to do to fix it?

  • I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Air and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive

I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Air and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive, how to solve this problem?

Try some of the troubleshooting steps outlined below:
    Troubleshooting an external hard drive
    > Unplug the hard drive, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in
    > Restart the computer
    > Unplug any other peripherals from the computer
    > Plug it into a different USB port
If none of those steps work, see if it is recognized in Disk Utility.
Checking a disk with Disk Utility
To check a disk using Disk Utility, launch the Disk Utility application in any of the following ways:
    > Type the first few letters of its name into Spotlight. Select it from the results.
    > Go Launchpad > Utilities > Disk Utility
    > Go Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Once Disk Utility is opened, check to see if your external HD appears on the sidebar. If it doesn't appear at first, try the troubleshooting steps above again while leaving Disk Utility open, each time checking to see if the external HD appears.

  • Question about LaCie 500GB external hard drives

Are the LaCie external 500GB hard drives actually 2 hard drives inside the case or just 1? Are they good?
I read a review that the larger LaCie external hard drives often fail and are not as reliable as the samller ones (like 300GB). Is this true?
    G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Tim,
I have an external LaCie Porsche Design 500Gb drive, and it is definately only one drive. LaCie's spin down when not in use, which some external drives don't. Spinning down extended the lifespan, so I doubt there will be problems because of it.

  • Lacie d2 external hard drive

connected lacie d2 external hard drive triple extreme to mini. Does not show on desktop. Does not show name in system profiler but recognizes a firewire attachment. Do not know what to do next.

Disconnect the drive, then reset the mini's PMU. Once done, reconnect the drive and switch it on.
If that doesn't work, check the connecting cable to make sure it's not damaged, and replace it if there is any doubt.
    To reset the PMU:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
