Finder no longer remembers prior spotlight searches (downward triangle)?

In Snow Lepoard prior Finder searches were remembered, just had to click on the little triangle in the spotlight box - in Mountain Lion the triangle is missing and I have to retype the search - I used that triangle every day.  Has it been removed?  I don't see any settings in Finder or Spotlight that controls this.  I don't want to use Smart Folders or save searches - I just want it to be auto like before.

I noticed the same thing. Please help! Searching by "title" is extremely useful. There should at least be a shortcut for searching by title (a la wildcard searches in Google using the asterisk).

  • 10.5.8 Finder no longer remembers open windows in FileVaulted home director

I am having a strange problem since upgrading to 10.5.8 - in my FileVault home directory, the Finder no longer remembers which windows are open. Each time I log in, I get just a clean desktop no matter how many windows were open before. This does not affect any non-FileVaulted users on my system.
Is this a permissions issue? And if yes, how do I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Michael

  • Can't see location of item with long name in Spotlight search?

I can find the location of an item in a Spotlight search by selecting it and holding down the Command key, whereupon its position is displayed at the bottom of the Spotlight window.
However, if the item has a long name, the location is "offscreen" as shown in the screenshot below.
Is there any way of displaying it?

Somebody in another forum told me it couldn't be done in Spotlight  but the word  "no"  must have kick-started my stubborn streak and I started hitting every other key I could find whilst holding down the command key to keep the incomplete location revealed.
Eventually I struck lucky when I pressed Return (or Enter)  .  .  .  the window below opened and I was able to do a "Get Info" on the item to find its exact location.

  • Spotlight searches missing some files

My searches in Spotlight are returning only some of the files that should be found. I finally narrowed this problem down to files that I had archived with BetterZip, but kept on my hard drive. The files are definitely still there on my hard drive, but they no longer appear in Spotlight searches. As soon as I open the files with an app, the files appear again in Spotlight searches. What has been done to the files that they don't appear in Spotlight searches? What is the fast method to change a setting/flag/unmark all the zipped files so they will all appear in Spotlight searches.
Reindexing Spotlight has not helped--I have reindexed Spotlight probably a dozen times with various methods over the past few days and nothing happened until I opened and closed the file. Once I open the file, it's a matter of moments before it appears in a Spotlight search.
    System: OSX 10.4.11
    Thanks!

I experimented some with rights and I can't see any consistent differences. All permissions seem to be 644 or 755. Neither the files that appear in Spotlight searches nor the files that do not appear in Spotlight are one or the other. Plus the permissions do not change after opening and closing the file.
I am the Owner of all the files. I noticed that some files appearing in Spotlight had a different Group assigned, so I changed the Group on a few files, but that made no difference in whether the file appeared in Spotlight.
Would upgrading to Leopard solve this problem?

  • Spotlight search no longer searches the web?

Spotlight search was the best in Mavericks - it searched the web. Yosemite no longer searches the web.
Settings has no spot to add the web search.
I have to open Safari to do a web search - good grief.
It was temporarily removed from iOS7 and restored after popular demand.
I hope this happens with Yosemite. Please.

After searching help on spotlight and clicking on show me Bing search in preferences, the addition preferences showed up and the web searches began happening. The preferences did not go all the way to 21 when I first looked at them and scrolled down. The web search was definitely not included because so few results were returned as opposed to the identical search now. I'm not sure why the preferences for Bing search were omitted when I first review preferences prior to doing the search of help.
It appears to now be searching the web and have the ability to include web searches optionally.

  • Spotlight search crashes finder

    Greetings,
I have searched the discussions for this, but found nothing:
Certainly the answer is probably simple, but it is escaping me...
When I do a Spotlight search of an AFP volume on a Window 2003 server,
and the search contains the exact word as the name of the volume,
it crashes the finder. If I do an abreviated search for the same file,
    no crash.
Replicated this crash on three otherwise healthy Macs running 10.4.7.
It is more of iritant than anything. We store client files on volumes
named with the company name, and occassionally we need to search
for files on those volumes obviously containing that same company name.
Below is the log if anyone wants to tell me what it means.
    Thanks!

Did you update your OS recently?
After each OS update I download, I always repair my
    Disk Permissions afterwards.
Try repairing your permissions using Disk Utility.
Remember to mark as helpful or solved.
    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, all 36 Macs I maintain are running 10.4.7 (except the QLA servers which run 10.3.9), and have regular maintanance including permissions repair.
I suspect that it has something to do with the AFP volume
name being created by Windows, and only the contents contained within that volume are searchable by a Mac
in Spotlight. But why the crash?
Shouldn't Spotlight just ignore the volume name,
or better, access it through NFS?

Reminders is automatically installed with 10.8 or above. A new Mac should have 10.9; it's possible that, with a third-party vendor, you have an earlier OS. Check under the Apple menu in the top left and click About This Mac. That will tell you what version of OS X you have.

  • File not visible in Finder until spotlight search

    Wierd.
I have been working on a Photoshop project all week. The project uses several jpg files and I have saved the psd's in the same folder. Toady when starting up PS, none of the psd files were in the folder - everything else for the project was. Baffeled and panicked, I did a spotlight search and found them.
Here's the wierd part. The psd files are in the folder they belong in! But I can't see them in the folder. PS also cannot "see" them if I try to open from within PS.
I can open the psd files direct after finding them with Spotlight. ***.

Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.

  • HT201285 Why can you no longer search the web from the spotlight search bar?

Ask Apple.  Nobody here would know.

  • Missing Finder/Spotlight search attributes!

When searching in the finder, after pressing the icon from the search bar and then selecting "other" from the drop down menu, there is no search attributes to check mark. I am not on an root or guest account. I am the administrator. Is there a preference file anywhere I can delete? Thanks in advance.

I just finished an archive and install, and the spotlight search attribute list that comes up from selecting other is still blank. I checked right after the archive and install, and it was blank, and I checked after applying each update, and it remained blank after each update.
I have also applied the directly downloaded (rather than using software update) update to 10.5.1, and still no items appear on the list.
I have not tried a full slash and burn reformat and install yet, but that may be what it comes down to. I am weighing whether the annoyance of being unable to search my Library folder outweighs the annoyance of a reformat and install from scratch.

  • Why is spotlight search on my iPhone and iPad not find any apps?

Spotlight search has been unable to find applications on my iPhone and iPad (6 and Air, both running 8.1.2) since December. I try to search for a banking app, for example, and it suggests "It came upon a midnight clear" from my iTunes library. If I search for iPages, spotlight suggests a nice opera. or an email from a time-sharing promotional email. What is going on? I thought this might have been me, but it is clear now this is a bug and is extremely annoying. It would be really helpful if someone would fix this. I have tried all the obvious work-arounds, which might (or might not) make the problem disappear for a while, it always comes back.

Perhaps you are spelling the name of the apps wrong. Try pages or the name of your banking app.

  • My Itunes app went missing i reset home screen, checked restrictions and did spotlight search none worked, how can i find it?

Tried spotlight search, checked restrictions, and reset home screen layout and cannot find itunes. How do i get it back?

As I wrote, the camera icon on my brand new iphone 5 is gone. For this is a pre-installed app, wouldn't I usually not even be able to remove it from the screen? And I think there was a facetime app in the first place, when I got the phone on friday.
Restarting the phone didn't help and connecting it to iTunes only showed, that the camera app isn't anywhere else to be restored. Which I already guessed, because the search function on my phone didn't show it either.
On locked screen there is the camera symbol, but from day one (even when there actually was a camera app) it only jiggles, but does not start.
This is a private, not a corporate phone.
Settings/General/Restrictions - the camera has been disabled.
It's also possible that the camera has been moved to another page of the Home screen or a folder. Go to search (press HOME when on the first page of the Home screen, or swipe it left to right) and search for "Camera".

  • Spotlight searching no longer working - indexing and search disabled.

I've been searching the web and tried everything:
    Server 10.5.8
In Server Admin - the attached drive is a SharePoint with Spotlight search on.
I've used mdutil to enable Spotlight.
    I've checked permissions.
I can search the Boot Drive. I can't search the attached drive.
mdutil returns indexing and search disabled when used to turn it on.
    very frustrating.
Anyone out there have a clue?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    HI James,
Open System Preferences/Spotlight and click the Privacy tab. Where you see; Delete any locations listed, Quit System Preferences and restart your Mac and see if you can use Spotlight.

  • Spotlight search results for a contact no longer display details

    3GS software ver 3.1.3
    new problem with spotlight/search/contacts/results:
I use spotlight to search on a contact, select the result.
Normally it would display the details of the contact I have chosen. I like this.
Now it is going to the All Contacts function. This is a problem for me.
I have looked in this forum and the user guide for an answer.

Actually there have been complaints off and on for ages that keyword search doesn't work at all, though you say that it was working for you. Certainly it isn't producing a result now, though searching on your title does. I'm afraid that all this is internal to the Store - the ranking and search methods are opaque and despite various websites claiming to explain them, nobody really knows except Apple, and as usual they aren't talking. There isn't really anything you can do about this.
