Finder: no preview of Impress odp files (OpenOffice, LibreOffice)

When hitting SPACE to preview an Impress file with file ending .odp (OpenDocument Presentation) no preview is shown like for .doc oder .pdf
Impress is the presentation program of OpenOffice / LibreOffice.
Question: Is it possible to add preview functionality for odp manually or is it done by Apple only?
Used version:
LibreOffice 3.3.2

tag libreoffice-3.3.2.2

Thanks for pointing me to QuickLook. It looks like LibreOffice installs no QuickLook plugin so far.
But the NeoOffice Team which ported OpenOffice to Aqua environment first, indeed has a plugin called neopeek.
I downloaded the neopeek project from their cvs (http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/build.php) and compiled it for OSX 10.5.
Credentials: :pserver:[email protected]:/cvs
password: anoncvs
The resulting file neopeek.qlgenerator was put in folder/Library/QuickLook according to the Apple documentation over here:
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/ Quicklook_Programming_Guide/Articles/QLArchitecture.html
It immediately worked with an LibreOffice .odp file.
Best regards, obn

  • Mountain Lion doesn't display Finder preview icons for .ARW files? (RAW pictures taken with SONY cameras)

This is something that I find rather ridiculous, and have a hard time believing no-one at Apple has addressed yet.
Basically the problem is that neither Mountain Lion nor Lion show Finder thumbnail preview images for pictures that are taken with SONY digital cameras.
This is something that Snow Leopard, as well as multiple earlier iterations of OS X used to do without any problem. The professional photographer community who uses SONY professional DSLR cameras is up in arms about this. And we've all been crossing our fingers that perhaps the Mac OS X 10.7.1, 10.7.2, 10.7.3, 10.7.4, or possibly the 10.8 update would fix this issue for us.
Several of us have filed bug reports over the past year or two. See this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213982?tstart=0
This is a flaw in Apple's operating system. Especially considering that there are supposedly 200+ "new features" which were just released in Mountain Lion.
Those of us who work with SONY cameras every day would probably have paid the $19.99 upgrade price for just one "feature". And not even a new one. An old one. The ability to see our pictures in the Finder. Pretty basic stuff.
Hopefully someone fixes this for us with the release of Mac OS X 10.8.1
    Please. And thank you.

I can see image icons for all my pre-MtLion images.  These are the folder images (Icons), and all the photo images (icons) on all my hard drives.  IE If I have a folder of 300 wedding pictures, they all show the picture image above the file name in the icon view.  So if I want to open a picture of the "Flower Girl" I can see the image (icon) of the Flower Girl.  Without the image showing all I see is the filename...  Smith-212.tif.  Now with Mt. Lion I CAN'T see any IMAGES (ICONS) on any of the 300 photos.  Just the file names in all the different views.... Icon View, List VIew, etc.  If I have a Folder with 23 more folders inside, they don't even show up either.  I saw a step by step process of selecting the file and right clicking on it and opening it in Preview, then doing a copy and then pasting it on the original image in tghe get info window.  WHAT A PURE PAIN TO HAVE TO DO THIS TO 170,375 IMAGES.
The other issue I have is that 93.5 % of the remaining icons that do exist on my system is that those 93.5 % are so pixelated they appear as a hugh checkerboard viewed through two inch thick glasses..... not for drinking, but the kinda glasses used by a blind man.  IE the remaining icons are so PIXELATED it is almost impossible to tell what they  are.
BEN WELLAND...... What did you do to get this point?
Thank you, thank you, thank you, to whomever at Apple finally fixed this.
After updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, SONY .ARW files (and I'm assuming Pentax .PEF files too) now render proper thumbnail icons in the Finder in list view, icon view, coverflow view, and columns view.
Since this is now a recognized bug, I'm guessing that the free update to Lion (10.7.5) that Apple also just released yesterday (September 19th, 2012) will probably fix this issue too.
    Hooray!
I have OS 10.8.2  and nothing has changed as far as being able to see photos / folders as image icons...
    rendered  proper thumbnail icons.
I have thousands of photo files that show nothing other that the file names.
The only way I can even see the file is to open it in Photoshop, or open the folder in Bridge. Even then after I open it in PS CS6, and save it again. It still is a "Empty" file...... no render proper thumbnail.

  • "Preview for Files Not Available" & "Failed to Find a Place for the Imported File"??

When I export RAW images into LR, some say "Preview for Files Not Available".  Also, it says "Failed to Find a Place for the Imported File".  Why?  What can I do to resolve this

    Hi,
Tried with this but still the same issue..
Stop the application services, recompile the JSP files manually, and start the application services. Check the login page then.

  • Plug-ins for viewing files such as .swfs and .rtfs in Finder's Preview Pane

Are there plug-ins which would allow files such as .html and .rtf to display details of their content within the Finder's Preview pane, in a way similar to the way it is possible to preview .pdf, .txt, and .jpg files?
    thanks

No, but any text editor can display html and rtf files, for example, TextEdit in your Utilities folder.

  • Viewing animated GIFs in the Finder and Preview

I was wondering why my animated gif images do not play while I view them in the preview in the Finder or Preview. I know it plays when I view gifs in Explorer and was wondering why doesn't the Finder/Preview.
I would really like to be able to view the animated gifs without having to open either Safari or Fire Fox to view them.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Discussions.
Apparently Preview lost that functionality a few versions ago. And Quicklook also doesn't seem to do it. Someone said that Pathfinder plays them, http://www.cocoatech.com.
If you don't want to use a "big" program like Safari or Quicktime, then your best bet is to use a quick and easy image viewer like Xee http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee.html.
Set it as default application by selecting a gif file, press cmd-I. Choose Xee under Open with and click Change all.

  • How do i change the file preview image for mp4 files?  I replaced the image but it doesnt show in my dock, instead it shows the first still of a movie

    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/21/screenshot07m.jpg/
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/39/screenshot04s.jpg/
pls help. i change the file preview of a movie file, and it shows that i have changed the preview in finder but when i open the folder on my dock, it shows the still of the movie instead.
the image shows the film the hangover as an example. the movie poster is visible in finder, but reverts to a default movie still from the dock. this only seems to occur for mp4 files.

its nothing to do with itunes, its movies form the internet. i got the file preview by taking an image off the internet, pressing command c and pasting it on top of the small icon in the get info section

  • ITunes and Finder - how are info about audio files refreshed?

I am now in the process of embedding artwork in my mp3-files using CoverScout. I have also updated info about all my tracks in the iTunes after embedding the artowrk, by selecting all the files and clicking GeitInfo and clicking OK (without making any changes). All albums are displayed correctly with new artworks. This, however, is not the case with the Finder.
Generally, if a mp3-file has (embedded) artwork then the file would be displayed as a thumbnail of the artwork in question. The thing is that the icons for the mp3-files that were recently embedded with artworks are displayed as lacking artwork (they are displayed with the simple iTunes icon). Moreover, the Preview of GetInfo window does not show that the mp3-files contain the embedded artwork. The files are not refreshed. However, if I copy or duplicate those files then the copied files are displayed correctly, with the right getinfo. This, however, does not work if moving files. The files are not refreshed when moved, only when copying or duplicating.
I find it curious that Finder does not refresh the files, even after restarting the Mac, given the fact that iTunes have the information that there is artwork. Is there a way to refresh the files in the finder without copying or duplicating the files?
Another curious thing with albums containing tracks with embedded artwork is as follows: the Finder displays some of the tracks as thumbnails of the artwork in question, but not with all the files. The same goes for the Preview of the files in GetInfo. Some have the correct Preview displaying the artwork, but some lack the info about the artwork in the Preview. Why are not all files displayed as having embedded artwork, but only some, given the fact that they belong to the same album and the artwork was embedded in the same way?
The same goes when I embed the artwork without CoverScout, by updating multiple files through iTunes (dragging the artwork to the Artwork-field in Info). The Finder does not display that the files are embedded. I must copy or duplicate these files in order to refresh the info.
A more general question: how do I refresh files in the Finder? There is no refresh button, as in the Windows.
    I would appreciate your help.
    Kind regards
    Alex

I was wrong about one thing concerning refreshing the files. I said that restarting the Mac would not refresh the files. However, if the iTunes have info about album's/tracks artwork then the Finder will also have this info after rebooting the system. My question is whether the Finder can be refreshed, without rebooting (restarting)?

  • Preview not opening pdf files unless they have an pdf extension

Preview will not open pdf that does not have a pdf extension. If I give a valid pdf file a random extension like .xxx, preview opens without windows. If I give it .jpg it opens with a questionmark in a window. If I give it pdf it open without a glitch.
Why cannot Preview detect whether a file is open-able or not an not give a **** about extension. This is not windows but a unix system
The problem exist when a pdf file is downloaded by firefox and not given a .pdf extention in the downloads folder. In Safari the file is opened without problems inside Safari.

Yeah, but Preview wont open the file at all, even through the open dialog, all files not associated with preview are greyed out. Shouldn't a program open a file if told to?
Yes, I agree with you. I also could not open the files unless I changed their extensions.
Also the "file" command has no problem finding out it's a pdf. I believe its an obsolete thing specifying filetype on extension, and not on content. Is is possible to get preview to open the file depending on content and not on extention.
Like I said, I think this was a conscious choice that Apple made with OS X, but I'm not sure why the decided to go that way (maybe posting on one of the dev lists would give you the answer to that).
I haven't been able to get Preview to open files once I've changed the file extension...

  • HT2493 How to change preview image of a file and NOT the icon ?

    Hello dear Mac users
How to change preview image of a file and NOT the icon ?
I know how to change the icon of a file, but I wish to know how to change the preview of any file.
For example: my file is "mysong.aif", I changed the icon to be "mylogo.png" using cmd+i, cmd+v on the icon. But the preview of the file still remain the same.
I know it can be changed using iTunes, but I don't want to import all my files in iTune, and iTune cannot import all type of files.
I hope someone will understand my needs...
    Thanks!

    Thanks BeerbarX
You can't change the preview image for anything
    hoo
    QuickLook plugin
    what are the plugin ?
In the case of a music file, it will be that generic black box with a note on it
That is exactly what I'm asking about !
MP3 which has a special tagging standard that can include artwork
How can I "tag" my MP3 without going thru iTunes ? Is it possible to do it dirrectly in the Finder ? Is there other type of files that can include such tags ?
Thank you for answering my question , wich I have to admit may seem useless, but I wish I could put something like a signature logo on each of the different file I produce (as AIF for music and MP4 for video clip) instead of that generic black box with a note on it, and by the meantime keeping a different icon for all of them in order to illustrate theire content.

  • Preview doesn't display files.

    Hi all,
Preview is not displaying files when I open them.  What happens is, when I click on the file to open it, the animation for opening the window will appear and there will be an outline of a window onscreen (a literal window) that I can resize and manipulate like I can do for a working one.  Preview just won't allow me to view the content, which is really unusual.
I've rebooted it in Safe Mode and found that it works then, but when I restart it, it will revert back to being unusable.
Please help me, I'm a student and PDF files are vital to my studying!  Thank you

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Preview doesn't open files upon reboot

I have the autolaunch feature set in Lion, and when I reboot and Lion attempts to open all of the Preview files that were open before reboot, I keep getting error messages that I don't have permission to open these files. I have not changed any permissions on any of these files. Has anyone else run into this and is there a fix?

In the Finder, select one of the image files you want to open with Preview. Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu or the File menu. In the "Open with" section, choose Preview from the pulldown menu if it's not already selected. If it is selected, choose another application (any other), then re-select Preview. Click the "Change All" button and close the dialog.

  • Can I get rid of the white frame on Finder icon preview?

This is another one of those things that Leopard has done that makes me wonder what the heck they were thinking! (Don't even get me started on the Windoze95 sidebar!) Why the heck take a wonderful thing like the Finder icon previews in Tiger, and make them solid white squares, with a nasty white border? These are stupid, ugly, and a massive step backward in interface design. I am assuming this is all done for the sake of "cover flow?" With decent Finder Icon previews, who needs it?
But please, please, if you MUST 'fix' things for me, give me the ability to opt out! SO until Apple remembers what GOOD GUI design is, does anyone know how to get rid of the border & white background?
    Thanks!

To each his or her own, but I find the frames & white backgrounds, if not particularly attractive, fairly useful for a quick visual reference of the images' proportions (like tall & skinny vs. nearly square). This is pretty hard to see if transparency is enabled & large parts of the image are transparent.
When I do want to see the transparency, I find Cover Flow (& Quickview) very useful, although Cover Flow doesn't always seem to show alpha channels while QuickView always does. Plus, both versions of the technology allow much larger previews than in conventional icon Finder windows & support scroll wheels, making it easy to review large numbers of image files quickly at high resolution literally at the flick of a finger.
FWIW, at first I thought this was just a gimmick with little practical value. Now that I have started using it, particularly in conjunction with smart searches, I think it is a great addition to the OS, one that is so intuitive & efficient that it makes the old icon view look like an antiquated relic from a time when computers were not powerful enough to manage more than tiny thumbnails.
I'm not trying to convince you about this as you seem adamant about not liking it, but I do think it is the logic progression for browsing through ever larger numbers of ever higher resolution images, & is only going to get better at this as it becomes more refined. Perhaps someday a future version will meet your needs.

  • Preview Unavailable for this File?

Need some help on this one.  I want to upload a file to Lightroom 5 and it will not work.  The program opens the file but then says "Preview unavailable for this file".  Since I had no problem uploading other photos in this catalogue, I don't understand why Lightroom cannot find these particular photos.  I checked my backup hard drive and they are definitely there and I can open them in Canon preview program or even the Mac preview program with no problem.  Any help?

Sorry it took so long to respond Keith.  I used a Canon T3i at the time.  All other photo files easily uploaded to Lightroom from the same trip except for this one set of files.
