Finder not browsing external drive

I'm having trouble with Finder.
When I connect my external drive, the icon shows up, and DiskUtility shows it mounted normally. However, when I try to open it through the Finder window, I get the error message:
"The alias “xyz” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."
with the buttons:
"Delete Alias" "Fix Alias..." "Okay"
--Clicking "Fix..." brings up a select file/folder window, presumably to repoint the alias -- except the drive is grayed out and not selectable, so I have to cancel.
--Clicking the other two has no relevant effect
The drive is fine.
--I've repaired the drive in DiskUtility and in DiskWarrior -- all is okay with the drive
--I can browse the contents just fine in the terminal
--iTunes can play files located on the drive, no problem
--I can connect to it via my other mac just fine; perfectly normal, no alias problem
But I cannot browse to it in the Finder on this MacBook Pro.
This happens both when I'm connected directly and when I connect via an Airport extreme.
What is wrong with Finder?

Update: Additional Information
--When connected directly via USB, I experience the behavior described above
--When connected via Airport Extreme, and I try to browse by double-clicking on the disc icon, the same as above
--But, when using as a shared disk on an Airport Extreme, if I open the drive by 1. clicking on the "airport extreme " icon in the left panel of Finder, under "SHARED", then 2. double click on the xyz share drive icon that appears in finder -- then I can browse the drive normally, and open files and the like.
This is weird.
Thanks for any help!

Hopefully you moved the entire iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder to a new path on your external drive. Copy your iTunes library folder out to the root of the external drive, e.g. X:\iTunes (where X: is your external drive), then move the media folder inside it. Hold down shift as you start iTUnes and keep holding untila asked to choose or create a library. Choose the library at X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. Should all be good.
Failing that, download and run my FindTracks script and point it at the new location of your media folder.

  • Finder not recognizing external disk drive

    Hi
I have just bought a Firestorm external drive to burn CDs. Attached it without any problems but as soon as I put in a blank CD it comes up with the message "You cannot burn this disc in the Finder because the disc drive is not supported".
There's no problem with viewing pre-burnt CDs in the drive, it just seems to be read-only at present.
Do I need something else - driver/other CD writing software?
    Thanks
    Berryman

    Thanks both for the advice.
I ordered Toast as I hadn't got Patchburn to work previously. I decided to give it another go tonight and typically it worked fine and the CD is now writing perfectly.

  • Finder is not recognizing external drive

Yesterday, (Mar 28,2012) Finder was listing my external drive but when I went to eject the drive, it no longer showed in Finder. I cannot eject the drive properly. It is showing on my Desktop. I've done a disk utility verfy disk and it is recognized and no problem was found. I tried a new USB cable and the old Fire Wire (which doesn't work??). I used a different USB port but nothing seems to work. I've also tried restarting. I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.6.8. Any ideas??
    Thanks for the help.

Just a thought, if your external hdd shows up on the desktop and disk utility I would start simple and check Finder preferences.  Once Finder preferences is open click on the tab sidebar and see if External Disks is checked under Devices.  Also, you can properly eject the external hdd icon that shows up on the desktop by dragging and dropping it to the trashcan.
If this didn't work, and what necronym didn't work, I would suggest deleting this file found at  /library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist , then restart the computer.  Then test the external hdd with Finder again.

  • I have an issue with time machine, it doesn't find the Lacie external driver it use to use. it is the same drive that I usaly use for time machine back ups. It is corectly plugged. What can I do ?

    Hi,
I'm trying to back up my macbook with time machine on the Lacie external driver I usualy use for this, but today my computer doesn't find the driver. I haven't done back up in 6 month.
Today, the Lacie driver is pluged and running, but the computer just does'nt find it.
    what shall I do ?

    Some things to consider:
Is the drive mounted, i.e., visible via Finder and/or on the Desktop?
Is the drive still selected in System Preferences, Time Machine? If not, use the "Select Disk" button.
Is Time Machine still turned on (System Preferences, Time Machine)?
Can you see the drive (and mount it) using Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder)?

  • Lightroom 5.6 does not recognize external drives when trying to locate a picture with a missing link on a Mac OS 10.8.5  and ideas?

A recent upgrade to LR5.6 no longer allows me to locate pictures on external drives with Mac OS10.8.5.    Does anyone know how to fix this?

Well, it still would help if you stated "exactly what steps" you are trying, as I asked above. That would lend some clarity to the discussion, as I can think of a couple of reasons you might want to do this and a couple of places where you might (or might not) be looking. I think to move forward, we need these details.
However, have you tried this: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

  • Not Reading External Drive

I have been using this camera for years. When I plug it into the dock, then turn it on, it takes a few seconds to connect to the computer. The camera then says "Connected to Computer" and a few seconds later an external drive pops onto my machine. It shows up in the Devices section in Finder, and I just drag/drop the pictures as needed.
!!!!! Well, the camera says it's connected, but no drive shows up. !!!!!
I also tried using my card reader that has always worked, and suddenly is not working, either. I then thought, perhaps it was the USB hub that I'm using, so I plugged my iPod into it, and the iPod opened and ran iTunes perfectly.
    Help.

I did. I unplugged the hub, and plugged the camera and docking station (which has always worked before, even through the hub) to my computer directly.
The camera said "Establishing Connection to Computer..." then "Connected to Computer", yet I still didn't get a drive to pop up on my computer.
And yes, as mentioned before, I plugged my iPod into the hub, and it ran perfectly.

  • T440s - Win 8.1 - not recognizing external drive

    Hello!
    I have this odd problem...
I recently bought Samsung's M3 Portable External Drive (1TB) and it worked fine up until I formatted the drive and unplugged it from my laptop. Now when I plug it back, the drive will not show up anywhere - tried DISKPART, Disk Management and some Samsung's disk management software, but it's not there.
I tried plugging it to other computers (Win 7 and Win 8.1) and it's working fine. Tried formatting it to exFAT, created 30GB partition and formatted it to FAT32 and currently it's formatted to NTFS - still not showing up in my T440s.
I have the latest windows updates installed, I uninstalled USB controllers. Nothing seems to help.
    Hoping for your help,
    Janek

Update: I tried creating a new user to see if it's Windows profile related issue, but it's not - the drive did not show up there either. What I did find out is that when I booted the Windows to advanced startup mode and used the Command Prompt there, then the Drive is shown in Diskpart. I formatted it from there and assigned new letter for the volume as well, but once I boot the Windows, the drive is still not showing up. So it is definitely Windows related issues not something specific to T440s.
Perhaps there's someone who could help, or has some suggestions?

  • IMac not recognising external drives or memory cards

    Hi,
I've been using both a Lacie external drive and a standard SD card from transferring files and images on my computer for ages, with no problems. I have two issues, possibly related, possibly not.
    1) I accidentally removed my Lacie drive before it had properly ejected the other day. The message that I had done so popped up on the screen so I plugged it back in, (as the Mac will usually fix this when it happens) and it never opened up in my finder. Tried restarting machine, but it still cannot even see the drive. It's an old external drive, and was backed up, so I put the problem down to that and almost forgot about it.
    2) Today I plugged in the SD card from my camera to transfer some images. After the transfer, I ejected the card correctly, then reinserted it to do a last job. Again, nothing in the finder. It's like neither of the devices are even there.
I've checked finder preferences to make sure that I can see external hard drives - this is on.
I've done the old fashioned restart too. No luck either way.
An additional point is that my BACKUP drive IS visible in finder.
    Any ideas?
I'm worried now that I shouldn't plug in any external drives, especially my work ones, just in case there is something seriously wrong.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Finder crashes with External Drive on Sleep Mode

I purchased my new iMac 21,5" less than a week ago, and I haven't had a problem with it except for one that it's been bugging me a lot.
I have a LaCie 1TB Quadra d2 external drive that I use to store footage (since it's HD, the filesize won't fit in my 500TB internal hard drive), but I noticed that sometimes when LaCie external drive enters in Sleep Mode, the Finder freezes and the only two ways around this, is to force reboot, because the Finder won't answer and won't open again, or unplugging the external drive without ejecting him first, which it's not safe for me to do, because I'm afraid of hurting the device, and the files in it are pretty important.
This happens almost everytime, especially after a long time on sleep mode. I usually leave Final Cut Pro transferring files all night (since it takes a long time) so I kinda need the sleep mode, but when I wake up, Finder and Final Cut Pro won't answer.
I updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on day one. Is there a way to fix this? Is it normal? I read somewhere that some users were having trouble with external drives on Sleep Mode, but I can't seem to find any further information about this problem.
    Thanks!

I've got a MacBook Pro 13.3" that's a little over a month old, with a LaCie 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0, #301542U and I'm suffering the same problems and a few others with it. I've got a partition on it set up as my Time Machine backup drive. I've turned off the Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible in the Energy Saver preferences but I'm still having the sleep problem with it. According to the LaCie Manual:
By default, your drive will enter Eco Mode after 30 minutes of inactivity in order to conserve energy. To exit Eco Mode, simply access data on the drive and the disk will automatically restart. You can manage this feature using LaCie Desktop Manager. Click the Eco tab.
The LaCie Desktop Manager (in my case) only takes me to the Energy Saver Preferences in OS X to adjust the time there. Turning off Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible doesn't seem to make any difference, the drive still goes to sleep after 30 minutes. However, after 15 minutes the drive seems to wake back up, but then during the next 15 minutes goes comatose (no power light). Sometimes it will go through multiples of these sleep wake cycles without going into a coma, but eventually it does go into a coma. This happens in between hourly Time Machine backups.
After locking up Finder, Disk Utility and Time Machine multiple times trying to access the drive in this state I figured out that I could cycle the power switch to regain use of it (with a Finder warning of course) but this will only lead to file corruption eventually and I shouldn't have to resort to this. I've also dismounted it, expecting it to turn off and instead it goes into an extended spin down cycle (rapidly flashing light) and never turns off (or goes to sleep or what ever it's supposed to do) and once again requires turning the power switch off.
This is just too unpredictible and unrelable for me and as soon as I get the opportunity to do a 7 pass erase I'll be returning to the place of purchase. Based on the reviews of other external hard drives a drive from another company doesn't look to be much better of a prospect so I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

  • Update does NOT fix External drive slowness

I ran the update hoping it would solve the slowness issue when keeping your iPhoto Library on an external drive (mine being a Time Capsule).
Well, it did not - and I may resort back to 08, that worked perfectly.

I may have misstated this. The trial of Aperture was set, I believe, to use and save the photos in their original iPhoto locations (folders) on the same drive. I also was using 'show iPhoto browser' when trying this out.
So while not using the actual library file it was still a good test of using the same amount of photos on the same drive....

  • Ibook does not recognize external drive.

    Hi,
I have a G3 ibook running 10.2x and it won't recognize my maxor external drive which was formatted fat32. All other macs I'd tried can read it. I have installed the software (for backing up) and when its running it can detect the drive, but the finder will not show it. Is there a driver or an update I can use?
    Thanks
    IBOOK G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   600 mrtz

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
FAT32 formatting is not ideal for backing up. Unfortunately you will only be able to use it for data file backing up. Many applications rely on resource files and keeping the same filenaming conventions and permissions to run smoothly in Mac OS X. FAT32 does not observe Mac OS X's conventions for this. If that does not matter to you, and there is no data on the drive you want to preserve currently, use Apple's Disk Utility to reformat it. If there is data you want to preserve on it, find out if it is readable by a PC and offload that data to another drive, and then reformat it with that Mac. It may be the drive requires a specific firmware update to work in 10.2, and that you may only be able to get from the manufacturer. Though usually Disk Utility in any version of Mac OS X will give it its blessing when you erase the drive.
Edit, if you want it to be readable by a PC, and be a solid format for backing up both applications and data files, PCs can read HFS+ with MediaFour's MacDrive:

  • Restore from Time Machine not recognizing External Drive

    Hi all,
I woke up the other day to a black screen and a frozen macbook pro (4 months old). It wouldn't boot up past the gray screen, so I tried to repair the drive with the install disc. It said that there are no errors (liar!), so I wiped it and tried to restore from my latest Time Machine backup (should be the day prior).
However, when trying to restore through the install disks, I only see a backup from April (5 months ago). Even if I try to restore from that one, it says that I don't have enough disk space and won't do anything for me.
Migration assistant in OSX doesn't see my external drive, even though I can access it through finder.
I just want my system back to what it looked like prior to my crash. Shouldnt Time Machine have this capability?
    Thank you for any help.

You should take your question to the Time Machine forum. More experts there on TM than you can ever imagine.

  • ITunes Not Recognizing External Drive when Shuffle is Connected

I recently bought an external hard drive and transferred most of my ITunes library to the drive. I also directed ITunes to find all songs in the external drive. The external drive has generally worked well. However, whenever I connect my Shuffle to my computer's USB port, ITunes becomes unable to locate my song library. When I look in my external hard drive folder, my entire library's missing. But if i unplug the shuffle and restart my computer, all the files are visible again, and ITunes has no problem locating them. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

It sounds like maybe the shuffle and the external hard drive are trying to use the same drive letter. Try changing the drive letter of the shuffle. If you change the letter of the drive iTunes will have problems finding your songs.
